CHAPTER ONE: THE QUESTION of a suitable wall for the fresco-mural, or how to make any available area a permanent foundation for the plaster coats making up the fresco ground, has vexed the fresco painter from ancient times to our days. BRICK WALLS Generally it can be said that the old-fashioned brick wall made from handmade bricks is still the ideal wall for the fresco mural. Bricks baked to a fresh looking red and laid in lime-sand mortar constitute that kind of a wall. Old plastered walls must first have the plaster removed. Old as well as new walls are cleaned with a weak solution of HYDROCHLORIC ACID, washed with hot water and then sprayed and rinsed with cold. During the spraying the wall is examined for non-absorbent bricks of a muddy violet or clincer grey color. All such bricks baked and burnt beyond the temperature of the fresh red color must either be insulated by waterproofing or, better still, replaced with good bricks to remove the ever present possibility of EFFLORESCENCE. Waterproofing is done by painting over with an ASPHALT type of WATERPROOFING which will still allow the mortar to cling to the safeguarded brick. Deep hollows and faulty bricks are filled out and repaired with lime-sand mortar, 1-2 mixture with brick chips mixed in

On 30 March 1972 the South Vietnamese positions along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separated the North from South Vietnam were suddenly shelled by hundreds of heavy guns and multiple rocket launchers. Caught in a series of outposts of what was the former 'McNamara Line', the shocked defenders had just enough time to emerge from their bunkers at the end of the barrage before they were attacked by regular North Vietnamese Army divisions, supported by hundreds of armoured vehicles that crashed though their defensive lines along the border. Thus began one of the fiercest campaigns of the Vietnam War but also one of the less well documented because by then most of the American ground forces had been withdrawn. Following on from the details of the downsizing of American forces and the setting up of the 'Vietnamization' policy, the build up of both the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) in the South and the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) in the North is discussed at length. A special emphasis is devoted to the study of the development the North Vietnamese armoured corps that would spearhead the coming offensive.Consequently, the nature of the war changed dramatically, evolving from a guerrilla one into a conventional conflict. The South Vietnamese resistance shuddered, and then crumbled under the communist onslaught, putting Hue the ancient imperial capital at risk. In its way the work is as representative of the age of avant-garde freedom as similarly open scores by Stockhausen, except that Riley works exclusively within the white notes of the piano that make up the C major scale. C major is often perceived as the most pure tonality of the diatonic system, and In C certainly passes across the listener"s consciousness like white clouds in a brilliant blue summer sky. Jeroen van Veen has won acclaim for his many Brilliant Classics recordings of minimalism, including his own music, but also the piano oeuvres of Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt and Ludovico Einaudi: a testament both to the variety of styles to be found under the minimalist umbrella but also to van Veen"s ready mastery of those styles. During the second half of 1943, after the failure at Kursk, Germany's Army Group South fell back from Russia under repeated hammer blows from the Red Army. Under Erich von Manstein, however, the Germans were able to avoid serious defeats, while at the same time fending off Hitler's insane orders to hold on to useless territory.Then, in January 1944, a disaster happened. Six divisions of Army Group South became surrounded after sudden attacks by the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts under command of generals Nikolai Vatutin and Ivan Konev around the village of Korsun (near the larger town of Cherkassy on the Dnieper).
