Platti: Cello concertos Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
Giovanni Benedetto Platti is no household name, but in his day he was lauded as an exceptionally fine singer, oboist and composer, leaving his native country Italy in 1722 to take up a position at the court of Würzburg, Germany, where he served Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn until the nobleman's sudden death from a heart attack in 1724.The concertos featured in this compendium can be traced as far back as this latter year, for from 1724 onwards Platti had both the time and the inclination to devote himself to the Bishop's music-loving brother, Count Rudolf Franz Erwein. A passionate cellist, Erwein is surely the dedicatee behind the three Concerti con Violoncello obligato, works whose fast movements exhibit a characteristically nimble style and whose slow movements abound with expressive harmony. We also know that Platti prepared musical material on a regular basis for the Count, and his handwriting can indeed be found in the adaptation of Corelli's Op.5 Violin Sonatas, which had no doubt caught Erwein's attention when they were first published in Rome in 1700. Here Corelli's violin part is shared between two Concertino instruments, and the alternation of larger and smaller forces -- a characteristic trait of the Concerto grosso -- helps accentuate the various reprises of the musical theme.Dedicated to all matters Baroque and Classical, Ensemble Cordia -- which uses period instruments to combine 'authentic sound' with youthful, fresh performances -- is at the helm to perform these little-known but highly elegant works. The group has recorded widely for Brilliant Classics -- its 2011 recording of Platti's Oboe Concertos (94007) earned the following review from Fanfare: "seldom have I heard Baroque instrumental playing so heartfelt and impassioned". The soloist for the cello concertos is Stefano Veggetti, whose assured playing can only serve to deepen our appreciation for a composer whose music is at last being fitfully rediscovered.Other information:- Booklet contains notes on the music and composer as well as artist and ensemble biographies. Excellent liner notes written by a musicologist.- Recorded 5--7 August 2011, Kiens, South Tyrol, Italy.- Platti's music, firmly rooted in the Italian Baroque style of Corelli and Vivaldi, shows an exceptional depth of feeling and a "personal touch", quite unlike some of the thirteen-to-the-dozen works of some of his contemporaries.- This recording contains the world premieres of 3 of Platti's cello concertos, delightful works full of zest and colours. Platti, a master instrumentalist, arranged Corelli's violin sonatas Op. 2 for a concertante setting with two soloists, characteristic of the well-known form of the Concerto Grosso.- Ensemble Cordia is one of the most highly esteemed Baroque ensembles from Italy nowadays.

Tale of Two Murders Duke University Press
Prawo, akty prawne
As scandalous as any modern-day celebrity murder trial, the ÂGiroux affair was a maelstrom of intrigue, encompassing daggers, poison, adultery, arch-enemies, servants and royalty, and legal proceedings that reached to the pinnacle of seventeenth-century French society. In 1638, Philippe Giroux, a judge in the highest royal court of Burgundy, allegedly murdered his equally powerful cousin, Pierre Balliet, and Balliet's valet, Philibert Neugot. The murders were all the more shocking because they were surrounded by accusations (particularly that Giroux had been carrying on a passionate affair with Balliet's wife), conspiracy theories (including allegations that Giroux tried to poison his mother-in-law), and unexplained deaths (Giroux's wife and her physician died under suspicious circumstances). The trial lasted from 1639 until 1643 and came to involve many of the most distinguished and influential men in France: among them, Henri II Bourbon, the Prince of CondĂŠ; the Prime Minister, Cardinal Richelieu; and King Louis XIII.James R. Farr reveals the Giroux affair as not only a riveting murder mystery but also an illuminating point of entry into the dynamics of power, justice, and law in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on the voluminous trial records, Farr uses Giroux's experience in the court system to trace the mechanisms of power--both the formal power vested by law in judicial officials and the informal power exerted by the nobility through patron-client relationships. He does not take a position on Giroux's guilt or innocence. Instead, he allows readers to draw their own conclusions about who did what to whom on that ill-fated evening in 1638.James R. Farr is Professor of History at Purdue University. He is the author of Artisans in Europe, 1300Â1914; Authority and Sexuality in Early Modern Burgundy, 1550Â1730 and Hands of Honor: Artisans and Their World in Dijon, 1550Â1650.

First Book of Songs, Dances and Fantasies Guillaume Morlaye (1552) Between Lines Books & Arts, LLC
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This book is a full and complete transcription of the first of four volumes of guitar music published by Guillaume Morlaye in 1552, "Le Premier Livre de Chansons, Gaillardes, Pavannes, Bransles, Almandes, Fantaisies". These pieces reflected the style, esthetic, and complexity of contemporary French court music, including songs and choral works.Guillaume de Morlaye (c. 1510-c. 1558) was a true Renaissance man. We know him primarily as a lutenist, composer, music teacher and music publisher. He also was very active as a merchant, he also was involved in art engraving and even invested in shipping. It was because of this last that a number of biographers mention his "involvement with the slave trade", as one of the ships was carrying slaves. He lived in Paris, and studied with the very highly regarded Italian lutenist, Albert de Rippe (Alberto da Rippa), who also lived and worked in Paris. In 1552 Morlaye received a ten year license to publish music from Henri II, and between 1553 and 1558 published four lute collections in cooperation with Michel Fezandat and six lute collections compiled by de Rippe. He also published four books of what appear to be his own four-course Renaissance guitar compositions from 1552-53; the last has a number of pieces for the cistre, another plucked instrument about which little is known. (Some of the works may have been copied from other sources; however, at this time it is not altogether clear who copied from whom.)The pieces in this volume fall into three categories: fantasies, somewhat simplified instances of the most advanced lute music; dances, including pavanes, gaillardes, bransles, and other dance forms; and arrangements of polyphonic compositions by some of the great vocal composers of the day, including Pierre Certon, Pierre Sandrin, Josquin des Prés, Clément Janequin and Claudin de Sermisy. Along with his own works, he included works by other guitarists and lutenists, including de Rippe and Simon Gorlier. So Morlaye acted as composer, arranger, editor and publisher for the volumes of music he put out. Each book in this series presents complete volumes of music that appeared in Renaissance times. They will include pieces from the many French publications, but also some from the Spanish and Italian literature. The series goal is to give contemporary readers a chance to enjoy these works complete, in their original setting, and at the same time provide you with the most readable edition.

Roman secondary education aimed principally at training future lawyers and politicians. Under the late Republic and the Empire, the main instrument was an import from Greece: declamation, the making of practice speeches on imaginary subjects. There were two types of such speeches: "controversiae" on law-court themes, "suasoriae" on deliberative topics. On both types a prime source of our knowledge is the work of Lucius Annaeus Seneca, a Spaniard from Cordoba, father of the distinguished philosopher. Towards the end of his long life (?55 BCE?40 CE) he collected together ten books devoted to "controversiae" (some only preserved in excerpt) and at least one (surviving) of "suasoriae." These books contained his memories of the famous rhetorical teachers and practitioners of his day: their lines of argument, their methods of approach, their idiosyncrasies, and above all their epigrams. The extracts from the declaimers, though scrappy, throw invaluable light on the influences that coloured the styles of most pagan (and many Christian) writers of the Empire. Unity is provided by Seneca's own contribution, the lively prefaces, engaging anecdote about speakers, writers and politicians, and brisk criticism of declamatory excess.

Beethoven: Complete Cello Sonatas & Variations Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
Beethoven's oeuvre only comprises a small collection of works for cello and piano, but that the composer was an accomplished writer for this combination of instruments is evident from the fact that Jean-Louis Duport, one of Frederick II's court cellists and one of the most revered musicians of his day, incorporated many of the techniques found in the Op.5 sonatas into his instruction manual for cello. The two works each contain only two movements, and the absence of a slow movement was probably to avoid the problem of dynamic imbalance between the instruments (which would have been accentuated in adagio passages) -- something that is also the case with the Op.68 sonatas, composed in 1807. Only with the second Op.102 sonata does the composer finally replace the slow introduction, as found in No.1 and all of the above works, with a full-scale slow movement, one that precedes the massive fugal finale that was to form such an intrinsic part of Beethoven's late-period works. Also featured are the three delightful sets of variations for cello and piano, each modelled on a different aria from Handel's opera Judas Maccabeus and Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, and each (just like the sonatas) placing the piano on an equal footing with the cello throughout. The works are an engaging addition to a collection that marks the return of Israeli/Dutch cellist Timora Rosler and Hungarian pianist Klára Würtz, whose previous Brilliant Classics release 'Cello Rhapsody' (9157) was released to critical acclaim, and which provides a snapshot of the composer's stylistic development over a period of nearly 20 years.Other information:- Filling "only" two CD's, the complete works for cello and piano are quintessential and vintage Beethoven. The two youthful Opus 5 sonatas are written in virtuoso concerto style, with an especially glittering role for the piano (Beethoven was a tremendous pianist in his early years), the sonata Op. 69 is in the expansive, sonorous and deep-feeling tonal language of Beethoven's Middle-Period, whereas the two Late sonatas Op. 102 are marvels of originality, experiment, "quirkiness" and humanity.- The two musicians Timora Rosler and Klára Würtz have been playing together for more than 15 years, having won several chamber music prizes. They performed the Beethoven cycle several times in concert over the years, and their interpretation has ripened to such an extent that the time came to record it. And here it is: every note alive and vibrant, played with gusto and feeling, alternating melancholy and joy, sadness and sheer fun.- Contains notes on the music and detailed artist biographies.- Recorded 19--23 January 2013, Sala congressi del Parco naturalistico di Onara, Padua, Italy.

It follows my life through growing up with a learning disorder and on to the French Riviera then on to a short unsuccessful career as a stock day trader. Judge in a Democracy Princeton University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Whether examining election outcomes, the legal status of terrorism suspects, or if (or how) people can be sentenced to death, a judge in a modern democracy assumes a role that raises some of the most contentious political issues of our day. But do judges even have a role beyond deciding the disputes before them under law? What are the criteria for judging the justices who write opinions for the United States Supreme Court or constitutional courts in other democracies? These are the questions that one of the world's foremost judges and legal theorists, Aharon Barak, poses in this book.In fluent prose, Barak sets forth a powerful vision of the role of the judge. He argues that this role comprises two central elements beyond dispute resolution: bridging the gap between the law and society, and protecting the constitution and democracy. The former involves balancing the need to adapt the law to social change against the need for stability; the latter, judges' ultimate accountability, not to public opinion or to politicians, but to the "internal morality" of democracy.Barak's vigorous support of "purposive interpretation" (interpreting legal texts - for example, statutes and constitutions - in light of their purpose) contrasts sharply with the influential "originalism" advocated by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. As he explores these questions, Barak also traces how supreme courts in major democracies have evolved since World War II, and he guides us through many of his own decisions to show how he has tried to put these principles into action, even under the burden of judging on terrorism.
