Roger Ebert is the best-known film critic of our time. He has been reviewing films for the Chicago Sun-Times since 1967, and was the first film critic ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. He has appeared on television for four decades, including twenty-three years as cohost of Siskel & Ebert at the Movies. In 2006, complications from thyroid cancer treatment resulted in the loss of his ability to eat, drink, or speak. But with the loss of his voice, Ebert has only become a more prolific and influential writer. And now, for the first time, he tells the full, dramatic story of his life and career. Roger Ebert's journalism carried him on a path far from his nearly idyllic childhood in Urbana, Illinois. It is a journey that began as a reporter for his local daily, and took him to Chicago, where he was unexpectedly given the job of film critic for the Sun-Times, launching a lifetime's adventures. In this candid, personal history, Ebert chronicles it all: his loves, losses, and obsessions; his struggle and recovery from alcoholism; his marriage; his politics; and his spiritual beliefs. He writes about his years at the Sun-Times, his colorful newspaper friends, and his life-changing collaboration with Gene Siskel. He remembers his friendships with Studs Terkel, Mike Royko, Oprah Winfrey, and Russ Meyer (for whom he wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and an ill-fated Sex Pistols movie). He shares his insights into movie stars and directors like John Wayne, Werner Herzog, and Martin Scorsese. This is a story that only Roger Ebert could tell. Filled with the same deep insight, dry wit, and sharp observations that his readers have long cherished, this is more than a memoir-it is a singular, warm-hearted, inspiring look at life itself.

ART, LIFE and UFOs Anomalist Books LLC

An intimate account, in three interlocked themes, of one man's remarkably complex life. ART: Budd Hopkins is a nationally known Abstract Expressonist painter, with works in the collections of the Guggenheim, Whitney, and Metropolitan Museums, as well as Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and New York's Museum of Modern Art. In this revealing memoir, Hopkins explains the development of his work and describes with keen insight his friendships with senior artists such as Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, and Robert Motherwell, and the importance he finds in their work. LIFE: Beginning with his childhood and youth in West Virginia, a period that remains a central theme in this memoir, Hopkins goes on to discuss his life as a victim of polio during the pandemic of the 1930s, his complex relationship with his father, his participation in the famous "Cedar Bar years" of Abstract Expressionism, his adventures evading the attentions of several prominent members in New York's once closeted gay scene, and his summer life in Cape Cod. UFOs: Hopkins has also spent more than 30 years investigating UFO reports and is considered the world expert on UFO abductions. He has authored four seminal books on the subject, including "Missing Time" and the New York Times bestseller "Intruders," which was the subject of a CBS miniseries. Among the personal or professional relationships he writes about during his research are those with the astronomers Carl Sagan and J. Allen Hynek, the philanthropist Laurence Rockefeller, and the Harvard psychiatrist John Mack.

Extra Ordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81 Pan Macmillan

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Frank Derrick is eighty-one. And he's just been run over by a milk float. It was tough enough to fill the hours of the day when he was active. But now he's broken his arm and fractured his foot, it looks set to be a very long few weeks ahead. Frank lives with his cat Bill (which made more sense before Ben died) in the typically British town of Fullwind-on-Sea. He watches DVDs, spends his money frivolously at the local charity shop and desperately tries to avoid cold callers continually knocking on his door. Then a breath of fresh air comes into his life in the form of Kelly Christmas, home help. With her little blue car and appalling parking, her cheerful resilience and ability to laugh at his jokes, Kelly changes Frank's extra ordinary life. She reminds him that there is a world beyond the four walls of his flat and that adventures, however small, come to people of all ages. Frank and Kelly's story is sad and funny, moving, familiar, uplifting. It is a small and perfect look at a life neither remarkable nor disastrous, but completely extraordinary nonetheless. For fans of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry this is a quirky, life-affirming story that has enormous appeal. And it's guaranteed to make you laugh.

"I sometimes think that if, as the result of an accident, I were to lose my knowledge of Japanese, there would not be much left for me. Japanese, which at first had no connection with my ancestors, my literary tastes, or my awareness of myself as a person, has become the central element of my life." In this eloquent and wholly absorbing memoir, the renowned scholar Donald Keene shares more than half a century of his extraordinary adventures as a student of Japan. Keene begins with an account of his bittersweet childhood in New York; then he describes his initial encounters with Asia and Europe and the way in which World War II complicated that experience. He captures the sights, scents, and sounds of Japan as they first enveloped him, and talks of the unique travels and well-known intellectuals who later shaped the contours of his academic career. Keene traces the movement of his passions with delicacy and subtlety, deftly weaving his love for Japan into a larger narrative about identity and home and the circumstances that led a Westerner to find solace in a country on the opposite side of the world.Chronicles of My Life is not only a fascinating tale of two cultures colliding, but also a thrilling account of the emotions and experiences that connect us all, regardless of our individual origins.

Errol Flynn - an Epic Life PalmArtPress

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The basic drama with Errol Flynn was that he had everything - looks, charm, talent, intelligence, and a huge following of devoted fans and willing women. He was the classic image of a swashbuckling hero and romantic lover. That which other men merely fantasized about, Flynn did with style and dash, living in a way which surpassed any film he ever made. But somewhere on the road to movie immortality he embarked on a destructive lifestyle that wrecked his career and ultimately killed him. Why did it happen? What were the forces at work in this complex individual whose own father regarded him as an "enigma"? Kevin McAleer is not the first author to wend his way through the maze of myth and falsehood that comprises Flynn's legend, but no one has yet attempted an epic narrative of his life in verse. Flynn's ghostwriter for his memoir My Wicked, Wicked Ways called him "one of the most poetic men I have ever met," and McAleer holds the view that biographies and other accounts of Flynn have failed to capture his verve and essential spirit, which had greater affi nity to an age of high-flown lyricism than to our own prosaic times. Flynn himself was fond of claiming that he'd been born into the wrong century, so McAleer is taking him at his word and recounting his saga in the same way as did English balladeers the tale of Robin Hood - Flynn's most memorable screen incarnation. In detailing Flynn's life, McAleer draws inspiration from Lord Byron's playful and jocose Don Juan, whose stanza form he employs. Flynn was not only the embodiment of Byronic romanticism but one of the twentieth century's great libertines, having also assumed the title role in the 1948 Hollywood film Adventures of Don Juan, so it is only fitting that the roguish "ottava rima" stanza be used in recounting his life. This is poetry for people who think they don't like poetry and for all those who enjoy dishy movie-star bios and a gusto-filled romp.

Ever since being brought up by The Beatles, Frankie Boyle has been a tremendous liar. Join him on his adventures with his chum Clangy The Brass Boy and laugh as he doesn't accidentally kill a student nurse when a party gets out of hand. I don't think anyone can have written an autobiography without at some point thinking "Why would anyone want to know this shit?" I've always read them thinking "I don't want to know where Steve Tyler grew up, just tell me how many groupies he f**ked!"' So begins Frankie's outrageous, laugh-out loud, cynical rant on life as he knows it. From growing up in Pollockshaws, Glasgow ('it was an aching cement void, a slap in the face to Childhood, and for the family it was a step up'), to his rampant teenage sex drive ('in those days if you glimpsed a nipple on T.V. it was like porn Christmas'), and first job working in a mental hospital ('where most evenings were spent persuading an old man in his pants not to eat a family sized block of cheese'), nothing is out of bounds. Outspoken, outrageous and brilliantly inappropriate, Frankie Boyle, the dark heart of Mock the Week, says the unsayable as only he can. From the TV programmes he would like to see made ('Celebrities On Acid On Ice: just like Celebrity Dancing On Ice, but with an opening sequence where Graham Norton hoses the celebrities down with liquid LSD'), to his native Scotland and the Mayor of London ('voting for Boris Johnson wasn't that different to voting for a Labrador wearing a Wonder Woman costume'), nothing and no one is safe from Frankie's fearless, sharp-tongued assault. Sharply observed and full of taboo-busting, we-really-shouldn't-be-laughing-at-this humour, My Shit Life So Far shows why Frankie Boyle really is the blackest man in show business.

In this collection of shorter pieces, Victor J. Banis demonstrates once again the astonishing breadth of his talent, covering virtually every facet of the human experience with astonishing brevity and clarity. Here are pathos and heartache, love and horror, irony -- and humor, especially humor, dry and wry and roll-on-the-floor-clutching-your-sides funny. It would be a hard man indeed who could read the adventures of his Underground Diner -- which take up much of the last half of the book and aptly skewer the ubiquitous and often pretentious food writing column -- without guffawing aloud."The really top-notch writers are rare birds indeed, but their works merit rereading again and again. Victor Banis is definitely a member of this exclusive club. You need go no further than the first paragraph in this new collection of tales and reminiscences to relish the magic of his pen. He sets the tone, grabs the eye, and rivets the reader right to the page. And he's funny -- ha, ha, I mean, not peculiar -- I swear that I've eaten at some of the places reviewed by The Underground Diner, including a houseboat restaurant run by a distant cousin of mine in Tennessee."-- from the Introduction by Robert Reginald.

The Life & Times of Ngamiland The story of Maun Botswana - 2857734041

The Life & Times of Ngamiland The story of Maun Botswana Adam Marszałek

Książki

Maun is an African village popular among hunters, photographers, nature lovers, adventurers, travelers, ecologists, geologists, and zoologists. It is also a popular place for safaris and it has a renowned reputation in the world of writers and film makers. Situated in the Okavango, it was discovered for the outside world by David Livingstone and ever since has been known as "the last Eden on Earth." Although the village is popular among visitors, only a person living in Maun can fully appreciate its beauty and value. The uniqueness of Maun lies in its remoteness from the modern world, in it being situated in the heart of the wilderness. Because of this, the villagers live in a highly diverse cultural environment, which combines elements of all historical periods, with the prehistoric and the modern existing side by side. The book features a number of historic photographs, documents, maps, and reports of the adventures of early travelers such as Livingstone and Selous. It also includes the history of the Ghanzi settlement, and even the story of the Batawana's first settlement in Kwebe, from which the recorded history of Ngamiland begins, as reported by Major Lugard to the British West Charterland Co. His wife, Nell, documented 374 plants, 92 of which were growing in the Kwebe Hills and were previously unknown to the botanic world, including Stapeli kwebensis. Her collection of plants together with her album of drawings and watercolors are displayed in Kew Gardens, London. The book is illustrated with numerous anecdotes, stories memories and opinions gathered from people who lived in Ngamiland. The list of interviewees includes: Eustace Wright, who in 1938 in Naraga became the first recorded victim of the sleeping sickness transmitted by tsetse flies, Motsamai Mpho, who described how the Bayei gained freedom from slavery in 1948, Lionel Palmer and Harry Selby, who presented the history of the first safari companies in Maun, and the Greek Cypriot traders, who recounted setting up their businesses in Ngamiland in the 1960's. According to the author, isolation proved to be beneficial for the transformation of Maun, as it provided time for the new to blend into the traditional. It also helped to preserve the great traditions of the ethnically, nationally and culturally diverse, tolerant, nature-loving and friendly society of Maun.

Snakes Curiosities & Wonders of Serpent Life Cosimo Classics

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Originally published in 1882, Snakes: Curiosities & Wonders of Serpent Life, by naturalist and artist Catherine Hopley, is a fascinating examination of the snake, from anatomy and biology, to common myths, to individual species and habits, and even speculation on "the great sea serpents." In the late 19th century, snakes were considered mysterious, evil creatures, stained from the sin in the Garden of Eden. Hopley's careful study shed new light on creatures long-thought to be vicious and deadly. In a new introduction, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman comments, "The mystery of snakes and the passion many of us experience among the serpents may seem commonplace enough today, but when this masterpiece appeared over a hundred years ago, in 1882, it was a remarkable event. The result was an interesting and scientifically insightful book on the curiosities of serpent life. It mixed Hopley's keen sense for observations and facts with her wonderful illustrations."This new edition, a replica of the original 1882 edition and complete with original illustrations, is part of Cosimo Classic's Loren Coleman Presents series. LOREN COLEMAN is the author of numerous books on cryptozoology, including Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters.CATHERINE COOPER HOPLEY was an artist, author, and naturalist from the late 19th century. She has written such titles as British Reptiles and Batrachians (1888),Life in the South from the Commencement of the War(1863), Stonewall Jackson (1863), and Rambles and Adventures in the Wilds of the West (1872). She wrote several natural history books and became known for her realistic watercolor paintings, and her 1856 painting of the old stone church in the Cleveland Public Square is in the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio.LOREN COLEMAN is one of the world's lead crypozoologist.
