More Than Two Thorntree Press, LLC

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Can you love more than one person? Have multiple romantic partners, without jealousy or cheating? Absolutely! Polyamorous people have been paving the way, through trial and painful error. Now the new book More Than Two can help you find your own way. With completely new material and a fresh approach, Franklin Veaux and Eve Rickert wrote More Than Two to expand on and update the themes and ideas in the wildly popular polyamory website morethantwo.com.From Ancient Greece through the many dynasties of China to current practices of non-monogamy, people have openly engaged in multiple intimate relationships. Not until the late 20th century, however, was a word coined that encapsulated the practice, as well as its philosophies, edicts and ethics: polyamory (poly = many + amore = love). For Franklin Veaux, who has been polyamorous for his entire adult life, the emerging framework and subsequent vocabulary for his lifestyle was a light in the dark. Candidly sharing his experiences and thoughts online catapulted his website morethantwo.com, among the first dedicated to the poly lifestyle, to one of the top-ranking on the subject. In recent years, as more people have discovered polyamory as a legitimate and desirable option for how they conduct their relationships, Franklin and one of his partners, Eve Rickert, saw that there was a growing need for a comprehensive guide to the lifestyle. More Than Two is that guide. This wide-ranging resource explores the often-complex world of living polyamorously: the nuances (no, this isn't swinging), the relationship options (do you suit a V, an N, an open network?), the myths (don't count on wild orgies and endless sex but don't rule them out either!) and the expectations (communication, transparency and trust are paramount). More Than Two is entirely without judgment and peppered with a good dose of humor. In it the authors share not only their hard-won philosophies about polyamory, but also their hurts and embarrassments. Living poly is not always an easy road, and they hope that by reading this book, you'll avoid some of the mistakes they've made along the way.Challenging the notion of what society considers a healthy and successful relationship, they offer up personal stories from their own lives as well as of those in the wider poly world, emphasizing that this lifestyle choice isn't for the noncommittal. Polyamory is all about the relationships and the individuals participating. Charting a Relationship Bill of Rights, the authors underscore the importance of engaging in ethical polyamory and guide readers through the thorny issues of jealousy and insecurity with the aim of encouraging readers to work consistently and conscientiously on both their relationships and themselves. And no, they're not trying to convert you: they know that polyamory isn't for everyone. Veaux and Rickert simply provide those who might be embarking on this lifestyle or those who have always known they are poly with a set of tools and many questions to help them make informed decisions and set them on a path to enjoying multiple happy, strong, enriching relationships.More Than Two is the book the polyamory community has been waiting for. And who knows? It may just be the book you didn't even know you were waiting for.

The autobiography - the dangerous life and wild times - of Sonny Barger, the legendary leader of the Hell's Angels. Sonny Barger is the Hell's Angel of all Hell's Angels, the motorcycle club that has been the scourge of America for over forty years. Sonny was their de facto leader for much of that time, the man who Hunter S. Thompson immortalised in his 1965 classic Hells Angels, noting 'Barger is nothing short of Winston Churchill when it comes to leading people'. He's been called an American legend and he's feared and revered by people on both sides of the law. From the club's formation in the 1940s to the height of their notoriety twenty years later, from Sonny's first-hand account of what really happened with the Rolling Stones at Altamont to his periods of imprisonment, from his fights with rival gangs and the police to his own battle with cancer, 'Hell's Angel' sets the record straight. Sonny Barger has ridden with the Angels for forty years, obeying no law but that of the HAMC. For the first time, this is his own - and their own - story.

Bill Clinton - Giving Arrow Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Here, from Bill Clinton, is a call to action. "Giving" is an inspiring look at how each of us can change the world. First, it reveals the extraordinary and innovative efforts now being made by companies and organizations - and by individuals - to solve problems and save lives both "down the street and around the world." Then it urges us to seek out what each of us, "regardless of income, available time, age, and skills," can do to help, to give people a chance to live out their dreams.Bill Clinton shares his own experiences and those of other givers, representing a global flood tide of nongovernmental, nonprofit activity. These remarkable stories demonstrate that gifts of time, skills, things, and ideas are as important and effective as contributions of money. From Bill and Melinda Gates to a six-year-old California girl named McKenzie Steiner, who organized and supervised drives to clean up the beach in her community, Clinton introduces us to both well-known and unknown heroes of giving.Among them: Dr.Paul Farmer, who grew up living in the family bus in a trailer park, vowed to devote his life to giving high-quality medical care to the poor and has built innovative public health-care clinics first in Haiti and then in Rwanda; a New York couple, in Africa for a wedding, who visited several schools in Zimbabwe and were appalled by the absence of textbooks and school supplies. They founded their own organization to gather and ship materials to thirty-five schools. After three years, the percentage of seventh-graders who pass reading tests increased from 5 percent to 60 percent. They also include: Oseola McCarty, who after seventy-five years of eking out a living by washing and ironing, gave $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi to endow a scholarship fund for African-American students; Andre Agassi, who has created a college preparatory academy in the Las Vegas neighborhood with the city's highest percentage of at-risk kids - "Tennis was a stepping-stone for me," says Agassi. "Changing a child's life is what I always wanted to do"; Heifer International, which gave twelve goats to a Ugandan village.Within a year, Beatrice Biira's mother had earned enough money selling goat's milk to pay Beatrice's school fees and eventually to send all her children to school-and, as required, to pass on a baby goat to another family, thus multiplying the impact of the gift.Clinton writes about men and women who traded in their corporate careers, and the fulfillment they now experience through giving. He writes about energy-efficient practices, about progressive companies going green, about promoting fair wages and decent working conditions around the world. He shows us how one of the most important ways of giving can be an effort to change, improve, or protect a government policy. He outlines what we as individuals can do, the steps we can take, how much we should consider giving, and why our giving is so important.Bill Clinton's own actions in his post-presidential years have had an enormous impact on the lives of millions. Through his foundation and his work in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, he has become an international spokesperson and model for the power of giving."We all have the capacity to do great things," President Clinton says."My hope is that the people and stories in this book will lift spirits, touch hearts, and demonstrate that citizen activism and service can be a powerful agent of change in the world."

Mencken - 2212836329

Mencken Oxford University Press

Inne 1

People whose opinions I respect have told me, usually with a certain amount of resignation, that culture war is the default state of American politics. The decades of New Deal liberalism, they explain, were not the epochal realignment they appeared to be at the time but merely a temporary armistice in the apparently endless and virtually pointless struggle over manners and morals. What's more, the resumption of cultural hostilities in recent years is just the country's inevitable return to doing what comes naturally. We have simply picked up where we left off in 1929, the theory goes, when other matters distracted us from our habitual preoccupation with the theory of evolution and the scandalous habits of the young. Perhaps this is what explains the publication of the third comprehensive biography of H.L. Mencken in 11 years. If we are truly doomed to fight and refight the culture wars on into the future, then Mencken -- that scoffing, pugnacious enemy of the sacred -- is exactly the critic whose life and views we ought to be remembering. An unbelievably prolific journalist and magazine editor who lived in Baltimore his entire life, Mencken so mocked and punctured the genteel mentality of the Victorians during his heyday (roughly, 1919-30) that it might be said he single-handedly ushered American letters into the 20th century. In the American Mercury, the magazine he co-founded in 1924, Mencken blasted the hyper-patriots, he laughed at the evangelicals, he shamed the racists, he baited the Babbittry, and he did all of it in a swaggering, sarcastic and yet elegant prose style that remains -- or ought to remain, anyway -- the model for every columnist, critic and blog-militant in this famously polarized age. The great man's contemporary relevance, however, is not a point raised by Marion Elizabeth Rodgers, the author of this new Mencken biography (she also edited a 1991 collection of his newspaper stories). In fact, the only one of the recent biographers really to press the notion that Mencken is a figure whose time has come (or, more accurately, returned) is Terry Teachout, author of The Skeptic (2002), which asserted that Mencken was politically conservative and that conservatives are in the ascendancy today. The particular species of conservatism that now holds the nation in its grasp, however, owes few debts to Mencken. The man was no fan of what we now call the "red states." On the contrary: He savagely derided the same backwoods civilization that so many conservative writers now embrace in order to establish their regular-guy bona fides. Mencken revered science and lambasted religion; his favorite put-downs, usually applied to the inhabitants of deepest Arkansas or Tennessee, were words like "moron," "idiot" and "yokel." His conservatism was that of Nietzsche, not George Wallace, and one can only speculate wistfully about the kind of destruction he would have visited on such excreta as the Left Behind novels or "The O'Reilly Factor." The immediate problem facing the biographer of Mencken is, ironically, the same quality that makes Mencken such a worthwhile subject: his peerless prose. Any study of the author is bound to disappoint when his own words are cited and the reader suddenly feels the galvanic force of the great man's writing -- and, by comparison, the weakness of the biographer's own abilities. Biographies that focus on the development of Mencken's ideas suffer from this problem even when they are well-written. (They suffer also from the inevitable realization that Mencken's ideas, as opposed to his verbal style, simply do not stand up after 70 years.) Rodgers circumvents this difficulty altogether by giving us Mencken the man, in impressive and often fantastic detail, while keeping the author's writing and ideas largely in the background. Every lead is chased down: The reader learns about what Mencken drank while in Germany during World War I, the testimony he gave in a censorship case in the 1940s, how much affection this person or that felt for him, and, over and over again, the intimate details of his love life. It is a solid and well-researched work, built on dozens of interviews in addition to heroic feats of archival digging. Mencken emerges here as a very different figure from the one we thought we knew from his cranky "Prejudices" books or the sarcastic items he wrote for the American Mercury in its golden age. Rodgers's Mencken is a decent fellow: lovable and almost always in the right. The author's thoroughgoing identification with her subject allows her to create a vivid portrait, but it also makes it difficult for her to show us how shattering Mencken's commentary could be in the early 1920s -- how alien and perverse it seemed to the "100 percent Americans" of those days -- and how monotonous, unfunny and irrelevant it became in the '30s. Any biography of Mencken, though, is ultimately no more than a supplement to the man's own works. Let us hope that this comprehensive study of Mencken's life introduces a new generation of readers to this enemy of falsehood and destroyer of pretense, this man whose response to the absurdity of the culture wars was laughter.

Saladin remains one of the most iconic figures of his age. As the man who united the Arabs and saved Islam from Christian crusaders in the 12th century, he is the Islamic world?s preeminent hero. Ruthless in defence of his faith, brilliant in leadership, he also possessed qualities that won admiration from his Christian foes. He knew the limits of violence, showing such tolerance and generosity that many Europeans, appalled at the brutality of their own people, saw him as the exemplar of their own knightly ideals. But Saladin is far more than a historical hero. Builder, literary patron and theologian, he is a man for all times, and a symbol of hope for an Arab world once again divided. Centuries after his death, in cities from Damascus to Cairo and beyond, to the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf, Saladin continues to be an immensely potent symbol of religious and military resistance to the West. He is central to Arab memories, sensibilities and the ideal of a unified Islamic state. In this authoritative biography, historian John Man brings Saladin and his world to life in vivid detail. Charting his rise to power, his struggle to unify the warring factions of his faith, and his battles to retake Jerusalem and expel Christian influence from Arab lands, Saladin explores the life and the enduring legacy of this champion of Islam, and examines his significance for the world today.

Kathryn Tempest - Cicero Bloomsbury Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

As the greatest Roman orator of his time, Cicero delivered over one hundred speeches in the law courts, in the senate and before the people of Rome. He was also a philosopher, a patriot and a private man. While his published speeches preserve scandalous accounts of the murder, corruption and violence that plagued Rome in the first century BC, his surviving letters give an exceptional glimpse into Cicero's own personality and his reactions to events as they unravelled around him - events, he thought, which threatened to destabilize the system of government he loved and establish a tyranny over Rome. From his rise to power as a self-made man, Cicero's career took him through the years of Sulla, and the civil war between Pompey and Caesar, to his own last fight against Mark Antony. Drawing chiefly on Cicero's speeches and letters, as well as the most recent scholarship, Kathryn Tempest presents a new, highly readable narrative of Cicero's life and times from his rise to prominence until his brutal death.Including helpful features such as detailed chronological tables, a glossary, a guide to Greek and Roman authors and maps, the volume balances background and contextual information with analysis and explanation of Cicero's works. Organized chronologically and according to some of his most famous speeches, Cicero will appeal to anyone with an interest in Roman history, oratory and politics in the ancient world. This accessible yet comprehensive guide provides a thorough introduction to this key ancient figure, his works and influence, and the troubled political times in which he operated.

Killing Us Softly Progressive Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Our progressive philosophy calls for more freedom and more prosperity for more people. Yet author Kevin Galalae says you can't always have more. Overpopulation is making us victims of our own triumphs over nature. Lacking a popular consensus to control population, the ruling elite have resorted to covert means. Their depopulation project has had considerable success, but at a terrible cost. "Strict secrecy and deception have been necessary to prevent the masses from discovering the bitter truth that for the past 68 years they have been the object of a silent and global offensive, a campaign of attrition that has turned the basic elements of life into weapons of mass infertility and selective death.""The birth of nearly two billion people has been prevented and the death of half a billion hurried. While these goals have been intentional, the architects of the Global Depopulation Policy have unintentionally undermined the genetic and intellectual endowment of the human species and have set back eons of natural selection." We are adding a billion people every 10 - 15 years, while consumption per person has skyrocketed - placing unsustainable demands on resources like water and fuel. The only decent alternative is voluntary population control to reduce world population. Here are the methods actually being used. - Contraception and abortion. Chemical sterilization: Flouridation, BPA-contaminated plastic and metal food packaging. Drawbacks: increase in chronic illnesses and lowering of IQ will lead to massive degeneracy in a couple generations. - The coercive one child policy -- overall a success story for China; surgical sterilization in India.- Biological: synthetic HIV virus in Africa, flu viruses, GMO crops. Lowering human fertility, while weakening the immune system to increase mortality.- Psychosocial: weakening the family, forcing women to work, high divorce rates, youth unemployment, countercultures, drug, tobacco and alcohol abuse, incarceration, accelerated urbanization. Successful in Europe where population has started to shrink. Political drawbacks: a secret state conducting genocide against its own people; sham democracy; a culture of deception. Endangering the gene pool and the ecosystem. Even so, it is more humane than the alternative of another world war to reduce numbers.Social costs: economic decline, collapse of social safety nets. Sustainable development policies don't mention the risks of covert sterilization that underpin them. "Population control as a substitute to war is the progeny of the bipolar world order that followed World War II ... they agreed to wage a demographic war on their own people, and on those within their spheres of influence, rather than risk their mutually assured destruction in a nuclear confrontation."The way forward: broad popular understanding of the issues. Yet politicians don't want to open up to a policy based on popular consensus, because that would undermine their power, which is based on manipulation.Aside from his writings, the author's efforts to awaken the world have included hunger strikes, imprisonment and legal battles.
