The legends of King Arthur - the most revered hero of British Mythology - have been retold many times, but Roger Lancelyn Green's version has become a classic since its first publication in 1953. Using as his sources not only Malory's MORTE D'ARTHUR but other chronicles, poems and romances, he has made each adventure of Arthur's knights part of an overall pattern - the struggle of Arthur's kingdom, the realm of Logress, the model of chivalry and right, against the barbarism and evil that surrounded and at length engulfed it. So here are the stories of the sword in the stone, of the Green Knight, of the fatal love between Launcelot and Guinevere, of the quest for the Holy Grail, and of the final departing of Arthur to the Vale of Avalon. The illustrations are taken from an edition of MORTE D'ARTHUR published in 1893 with which Aubrey Beardsley first made a name for himself at the age of twenty.

Texts for Nothing and Other Shorter Prose, 1950-1976 Faber & Faber

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This is the last of three volumes of collected shorter prose to be published in the Faber edition of the works of Samuel Beckett - which already includes a volume of early stories ("The Expelled"/"The Calmative"/"The End"/"First Love") and of late stories ("Company"/"Ill Seen Ill Said"/"Worstward Ho"/"Stirrings Still"). The present volume contains all of the short fictions - some of them no longer than a page - written and published by Beckett between 1950 and the early 1970s. Most were written in French, and they mostly belong within three loose sequences: "Texts for Nothing", "Fizzles" and "Residua". The edition also includes two remarkable independent narratives: "From an Abandoned Work" and "As The Story Was Told". All of these texts, whose unsleeping subject is themselves, demonstrate that the short story is one of the recurrent modes of Beckett's imagination, and occasions some of his greatest works...he would like it to be my fault that words fail him, of course words fail him. He tells his story every five minuts, saying it is not his, there's cleverness for you. He would like ti to be my fault that he has no story, of course he has no story, that's no reason for trying to foist one on me...

Faulkner was a master of the short story. Most of the pieces in this collection are drawn from the greatest period in his writing life, the fifteen or so years beginning in 1929, when he published "The Sound and the Fury." They explore many of the themes found in the novels and feature characters of small-town Mississippi life that are uniquely Faulkner's. In "A Rose for Emily," the first of his stories to appear in a national magazine, a straightforward, neighborly narrator relates a tale of love, betrayal, and murder. The vicious family of the Snopes trilogy turns up in "Barn Burning," about a son's response to the activities of his arsonist father. And Jason and Caddy Compson, two other inhabitants of Faulkner's mythical Yoknapatawpha County, are witnesses to the terror of the pregnant black laundress in "That Evening Sun." These and the other stories gathered here attest to the fact that Faulkner is, as Ralph Emerson so aptly notes, "the greatest artist the South has produced."

Guy de Maupassant's Tales of Marriage - A Collection of Short Stories Baker Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

These early works by Guy de Maupassant were originally published in the 1880's. As a collection of short stories, this represents Maupassant's tales of marriage, and includes 'Useless Beauty', 'Monsieur Parent', 'A Wedding Gift', 'The Door', 'A Meeting', and many other titles. Guy de Maupassant was born in 1850 at the Château de Miromesnil, near Dieppe, France. He came from a prosperous family, but when Maupassant was eleven, his mother risked social disgrace by trying to secure a legal separation from her husband. After the split, Maupassant lived with his mother till he was thirteen, and inherited her love of classical literature. In 1880, Maupassant published his first - and, according to many, his best - short story, entitled 'Boule de Suif' ('Ball of Fat'). It was an instant success. He went on to be extremely prolific during the 1880s, working methodically to produce up to four volumes of short fiction every year. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

A teenager deals with his sister's death by escaping from their tiny Scottish island -- but will she let him leave? In 1920s New Orleans, a young girl comes of age in her mother's brothel. Just So Stories Penguin Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A relentlessly inventive collection of myths that betray a deep love and respect for the natural world, the "Penguin Classics" edition of Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories" is edited with an introduction by Judith Plotz and a general preface by series editor Jan Montefiore. In these bewitching stories we learn "How the Camel got his Hump", "How the Leopard got his Spots" and "How the Whale got his Throat", as Rudyard Kipling conjures up distant lands, beautiful gardens of splendid palaces, the sea, the deserts, the jungle and all its creatures. Inspired by Kipling's delight in human eccentricities and the animal world, and based on bedtime stories he told to his daughter, these strikingly imaginative fables explore the myths of creation, the nature of beasts and the origins of language and writing. They are linked by poems and scattered with Kipling's illustrations, which contain hidden jokes, symbols and puzzles. Among Kipling's most loved works, the "Just So Stories" have been continually in print since 1902.Part of a series of new editions of Kipling's works in "Penguin Classics", this volume contains a General Preface by Jan Montefiore and an introduction by Judith Plotz exploring the origins of the stories in Kipling's own life and in folklore, their place in classic children's literature and their extraordinary language. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay. In 1882 he started work as a journalist in India, and while there produced a body of work, stories, sketches and poems - notably "Plain Tales from the Hills" (1888) - which made him an instant literary celebrity when he returned to England in 1889. His most famous works include "The Jungle Book" (1894), "Kim" (1901) and the "Just So Stories" (1902). Kipling refused to accept the role of Poet Laureate and other civil honours, but he was the first English writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize, in 1907. If you enjoyed "Just So Stories", you might like "Selected Tales by the Brothers Grimm", also available in "Penguin Classics".
