85-year-old Hendrik Groen is fed up to his false teeth with coffee mornings and bingo. He dreams of escaping the confines of his care home and practicing hairpin turns on his mobility scooter. Inspired by his fellow members of the recently formed Old-But-Not-Dead Club, he vows to put down his Custard Cream and commit to a spot of octogenarian anarchy. But the care home's Director will not stand for drunken bar crawls, illicit fireworks and geriatric romance on her watch. The Old-But-Not-Dead Club must stick together if they're not to go gently into that good night. Things turn more serious, however, when rumours surface that the home is set for demolition. It's up to Hendrik and the gang to stop it - or drop dead trying . . .He may be the wrong side of 85, but Hendrik Groen has no intention of slowing up - or going down without a fight. Praise for Hendrik Groen'A story with a great deal of heart, it pulled me in with its self-deprecating humour, finely drawn characters and important themes. Anyone who hopes to grow old with dignity will have much to reflect on' Graeme Simsion'There are many laughs in this book but it's so much more than just a comedy. It's a story about how friendship, selflessness and dignity lie at the heart of the human experience. When I'm an old man, I want to be Hendrik Groen' John Boyne'A funny but also touching diary praised for its wit and realism' BBC Radio 4 Front Row'I laughed until I cried and then laughed and cried some more' David Suchet'Thoughtful, anxious and gruff... Laced with humour' The Best New Fiction Mail on Sunday'Amusing [and] wickedly accurate ... I was constantly put in mind of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, another comi-tragedy concerning the tyranny of institutions of the unwanted. Enjoy Groen's light touch but do not be fooled by it. We live in an ageing society. The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen is a handbook of resistance for our time' ***** FIVE STARS Sunday Express'Highly entertaining ... a delightful and touching saga of one man's way of coping with old age ... we may assume that Hendrik Groen is a character of fiction. But it is a fiction so closely based on the observation of real life that it is utterly convincing' Daily Express'A joy to read, as much concerned with friendship and dignity as it is with the debilitating effects of aging ... An entertaining and uplifting story of a man in the winter of his days, stoic in the face of bureaucratic nonsense and an unabashed need to wear a nappy. Imagined or not, this is the diary of someone who wants nothing more than to be allowed see out his days with dignity and respect. It's not too much to ask, really, is it?' John Boyne Irish Times'Full of off-beat charm and quirky characters' Cathy Rentzenbrink, Stylist'Hendrik pens an expose of his care home, sets up the Old-But-Not-Dead club and relishes the arrival of a new female resident. This geriatric Adrian Mole made me laugh and think. Terrific' Fanny Blake, Woman and Home

Father Tabb Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Father Tabb: His Life and Work; A Memorial That Father Tabb has made a permanent contribution to poetic thought hardly admits of question. A few months ago the Oxford University Press added to its well known Oxford Garland Series a volume called Epigrams. Only two Americans were admitted, Emerson and Father Tabb. More than these two might well, I think have been included; but the omission of the others may serve to remind us that just as American novelists have created few characters that may be called world citizens, so American poets have contributed but sparingly to the treasure-house of English epigram. The reason is in both cases the same: it is not so much a lack of leisure as inability to use leisure. Father Tabb had the leisure and the ability to use it constructively. He had also a concentric lyric genius without parallel in American literature. His thought does not move forward in leaps; it turns in on itself and seeks truth at the centre rather than on the circumference. It is circular rather than linear. Scientists have found a new sphere of activity in the attempt to "isolate the germ" of threatening diseases. To isolate is to conquer. Father Tabb's laboratory was poetical, not scientific. To it came moods and fancies, hints and shadows, joys and pains, hopes and high resolves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Conduction of Electricity Through Gases (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Conduction of Electricity Through Gases I have endeavoured in this work to develop the view that the conduction of electricity through gases is due to the presence in the gas of small particles charged with electricity, called ions, which under the influence of electric forces move from one part of the gas to another. My object has been to show how the various phenomena exhibited when electricity passes through gases can be coordinated by this conception rather than to attempt to give a complete account of the very numerous investigations which have been made on the electrical properties of gases; I have therefore confined myself for the most part to those phenomena which furnish results sufficiently precise to serve as a test of the truth of this theory. The book contains the subject-matter of lectures given at the Cavendish Laboratory where a good deal of attention has been paid to the subject and where a considerable number of physicists are working at it. The study of the electrical properties of gases seems to offer the most promising field for investigating the Nature of Electricity and the Constitution of Matter, for thanks to the Kinetic Theory of Gases our conceptions of the processes other than electrical which occur in gases are much more vivid and definite than they are for liquids or solids; in consequence of this the subject has advanced very rapidly and I think it may now fairly be claimed that our knowledge of and insight into the processes going on when electricity passes through a gas is greater than it is in the case either of solids or liquids. Excerpt from The Lettsomian Lectures on the Treatment of Some of the Forms of Valvular Disease of the Heart: Delivered Before the Medical Society of London TI Medical Society of London has honoured me by ex pressing the wish that these Lectures should be published. I comply with the request, regretfully conscious that much of imperfection attaches to them. It was my intention to have included a brief sketch of the treatment of diseases of the aortic valves; I soon found, however, that this, to be consistent with my plan of exposition, was impossible. This plan is mentioned at the commencement of my first lecture; but I may add that I could not approach questions of treatment of any disease without formulating the bases on which I conceive such treatment should rest. To do otherwise would be, in my Opinion, to promulgate an unscientific empiricism. In order, therefore, to define the bases for treatment, I have been obliged to touch upon questions of pathology and diagnosis where I have considered that these have not been made sufficiently manifest by extant evidence. As far as possible I have avoided controversy, and have dealt with facts rather than with Opinions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Untold Valor Potomac Books Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

For the men of the Army Air Corps in early World War II, the chance of surviving the obligatory twenty-five missions without death, injury, or imprisonment was one in three. In this groundbreaking book, Rob Morris has sought out remarkable but little-known stories of the air war from the men who lived and fought it. Based on hundreds of interviews with American veterans and their families, "Untold Valor" illuminates the courage of airmen whose exploits have until now remained untold. Read about Jewish aviators' experiences as POWs in German camps. Learn about American airmen who were imprisoned, even killed, by the neutral Swiss and about two Air Corps enlisted men who changed U.S. policy toward liberated concentration camp survivors. Also discover the unusual story of Luftwaffe commander Herman Goering's nephew, who flew B-17 missions against Germany. While some of the stories cover major events, most are about incidents and individuals misrepresented or overlooked by history books. Yet their efforts were vital, their lives forever changed. Detailed and moving, "Untold Valor" is certain to interest the serious air historian and the casual reader alike. It contains a foreword by the editor of B - 17s Over Europe. The men of the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater suffered more casualties than the Navy and Marine Corps combined in World War II. Early on, the chance of surviving the obligatory twenty-five missions with death, injury, or imprisonment was one in three. The success of daylight bombing was very much in doubt. Yet it was these young men - boys really - who proved that mere human beings could push themselves to do super-human feats of strength and courage. Many never came home. Those who did were forever changed by the experience. They knew they had done something special, and they forged bonds with their comrades that have lasted to this day. Now, the passage of years is taking the last of these men from us. I guess that's what prompted me to write this book. I've been interested in World War II aerial combat sine age nine or ten, and one day I realized that there were a lot of stories that were going to disappear like the morning fog unless somebody wrote them down. I couldn't write them all, but I could go out and find a few. That would be my way of thanking those who risked everything for their country more than sixty years ago. But what to write? I read numerous accounts of the air war over the years, and it seemed like there was no shortage of excellent eyewitness accounts of aerial combat. I didn't want to cover what had already been done, and done so well, by those who had actually been there. I decided to branch out and find stories that had not been told, or had been told but were not part of the mainstream historical record on the air war. I began to look for stories that touched on universal themes of human existence, things like faith, courage, love, devotion, and perseverance. Guided by men who shared my interest, I found individuals all over the United States who had stories about aspects of the air war that I had never heard about before. I talked to Jewish aviators who ended up as POWs in German camps. I found out what happened to the many individuals who ended up interned in Switzerland or Sweden. I researched the stories of the men who died training to defend their country but never made it to combat. I searched the back corners of the historical closet for stories that added to the historiography of the air war, rather than repeated what already existed.

Address Delivered Before the Archaean Society of Beloit College, at Its Anniversary Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the Archćan Society of Beloit College, at Its Anniversary: July 13, 1858 If for the purpose of selecting a subject for this Address I had descended into the pyramids of Egypt, or the classical ruins of Athens, or the catacombs of Rome, I would perhaps have better conformed to established customs; and I would, certainly, have imposed a much easier task upon my very limited abilities. For I consider it less difficult to treat of a matter of mere historical knowledge, or of mere literary interest, than to speak, with the impartial calmness of a scientific disquisition, of living things - of ideas which daily move our hearts and inspire our thoughts. But I have chosen this task, not as though the treasures of antiquity had no charms for me, but because, when studying the past, I cannot abstain from drawing conclusions on the present; and when thinking of by-gone generations, I instinctively calculate their value for that world of ours, in whose veins the warm blood of life is still flowing. Our age is the Era of Results. It harvests the crops sown in by-gone centuries: it investigates the principles which have ruled the world from the beginning, applies them to given matter and creates new things by combination. It discovers, anew, theories which have long lain idle, and introduces them into practical existence. It holds abstractions in its powerful grasp, and transforms them into living realities. The time is past, when a man would consider it his calling to retire into the dead tranquillity of monasterial seclusion in order to brood over musty manuscripts, merely for the sake of amusing his mind by a contact with things that have ceased to be. We, in whatever we do, want to feel the touch of the warm hand of actual life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Greatest Park, in the World Palisades Interstate Park Its Purpose, History and Achievements (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from The Greatest Park, in the World Palisades Interstate Park Its Purpose, History and Achievements A casual trip to Bear Mountain first brought to me the realization that the Atlantic seaboard had at last secured a great park. And two vacation seasons spent among its natural beauties and in enjoyment of its offerings to the public have made me, as it has a host of others, most enthusiastic and optimistic as to its present and future. And that others may enjoy what I have enjoyed so much, and he benefited as I have been, has been the inspiration of this little book. My relation with the Park Commission has been no closer than that of hundreds of others who have become interested in this great project. For this reason this book can be considered in no way as being official or, so far as I am aware, reflecting the sentiments or plans of the Commission. Consequently, it is in no way an advertisement of the park or of any individual connected with it in an official capacity. I wish, however, to express my appreciation of the courtesies extended to me by the Commission and for assistance rendered by it in securing data. There is a great deal of interesting information which space has not permitted me to use, as it has been my thought to present only such a summary as would direct attention to and arouse interest in what I firmly believe to be one of the greatest opportunities ever placed before a State or municipality for securing healthful vacation pleasures at small cost. What Palisades Interstate Park has done for me it offers you, and if this little book enables you to secure a more bountiful share in its offerings or enlists you in the rapidly growing army of its enthusiastic friends, I shall feel I have added my mite to the world's work. Western World, Vol. 1 of 2 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Western World, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Travels in the United States in 1846-47; Exhibiting Them in Their Latest Development, Social, Political, and Industrial; Including a Chapter on California It is now some time since a work has appeared professing to give to the English public, a general account of the social, political and material condition of the United States. At the satne time, so rapid is their development, and so great are the changes which, in every national point of view, they are constantly exhibiting, that the progress made by them each year would almost furnish sufficient material for a new work respecting them. That which I now venture to offer to the reader is not, as too many such works have been, the result of a hurried visit to the American republic. Most of those who have written upon America, have done so after a few months' sojourn in the country; but there is no country in the world less likely to be properly understood on so brief an acquaintance with it. Where populations are dense, and confined within limited areas, national life may be soon studied and appreciated. But when a country is almost continental in its dimensions, and its inhabitants are yet comparatively few, and in most cases separated widely from each other, it takes a much longer time, if not to understand national polity, at least to gain a thorough insight into national habits, pursuits, and peculiarities; in short, into every thing which enters into the social life of a people. By travelling a man may thoroughly acquaint himself with the physical aspect of a country; but he must do more than travel over its surface to understand it aright, in that which constitutes its most interesting, its moral, aspect. A people, before they can be fairly portrayed, must be studied, not simply looked at. It is impossible thoroughly to study the Americans during a six months' tour in America. A man who professes to have traversed the Union in that time, must have been almost constantly on the high-way, the railway, or the steamer. He has thus been brought in contact with American life but in one of its phases, and for reasons mentioned in the body of the work, is incompetent to form a correct judgment of society in America, in its proper acceptation. Mind and Motion Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Mind and Motion: And Monism Attention may be drawn, for example, to the sentence on p. 139, italicized by the author himself, in which it is contended that the will as agent must be identified with the principle of Causality. I have reason to believe that the chapter on The World as an Eject would, in a final revision of the Essay as a whole, have been modified so as to lay stress on this identification of the human will with the principle of Causality in the world at large - a doctrine the relation of which to the teachings of Schopenhauer will be evident to students of philosophy. But the hand of death closed on the thinker ere his thought had received its full and ultimate expression. When in July, 1893, I received from Mr. Romanes instructions with regard to the publication of that which now goes forth to the world in his name, his end seemed very near; and he said with faltering voice, in tones the pathos of which lingers with me still, that this and much besides must, he feared, be left unfinished. Maxine Peake - Beryl METHUEN DRAMA

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

I had a constant battle to get where I am today. Scrimping and scraping, people telling me not to do it, I couldn't do it. That my life wouldn't amount to very much. Now I might have had a bit of natural talent but I got here because of pure determination and persistence. Stubbornness you might say. I always went that extra mile, pushed myself that bit harder than anyone else and never took anything for granted. It was 1954 when Beryl Charnock met keen cyclist Charlie Burton. In those days they cycled in clubs and once Beryl started she was smitten, not only with Charlie, but by the thrill and freedom found on two wheels. Beryl was better than good, she was the best, and she was determined to stay that way. Beryl Burton was five times world-pursuit champion, thirteen times national champion, twice road-racing world champion and twelve times national champion. Her accolades include time trials, former world-record holder, former British record-holder, numerous sports awards an MBE and an OBE. Burton was one of the most astonishing sports people ever to have lived, but she remains something of a mystery. History and Traditions of Ravenstonedale, Westmorland (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The History and Traditions of Ravenstonedale, Westmorland I had intended to publish my researches into the various features of the tradition and history of Ravenstonedale, rearranged, and composed in a written rather than a spoken style; but, after mature consideration, I have determined, for several reasons, to present my lectures to the public in the style in which they were delivered, except that they have undergone careful revision, and several additions have been made to them which could not be introduced when they were delivered for want of time. I gladly avail myself of this opportunity of expressing my obligations to the Rev. R. Robinson, of Mallerstang; Mr. John Robinson, of Ash Fell, who is in possession of some of the most important MSS.; but most of all to Mr. A. Metcalfe, of Park House, who was my chairman each evening, and through whose invariable kindness; and courtesy I have been able to obtain much of the information contained in the following lectures. To my critics I may say that I am responsible for the blunders, and that my rushing into print has not arisen from the cacoethes scribendi of which one has so often heard, and the disease from which one would wish to be free, but from the desire to comply with the unanimous request of a crowded audience to which the last lecture was delivered, and to preserve, if possible, in a permanent form, facts and traditions which might otherwise be lost to the finest drag-net of any chronicler who might come at all remotely after me. The following record is a contribution to English history, although an atom, still an atom, and so a part of the mass, and thus furnishing the reader with an insight into the self-contained and independent rule in some of the more highly favoured dales, such as Ravenstonedale was. In the Appendix the reader will find some notes containing valuable information. My aim has been to notice the facts connected with the parish which have been hitherto unrecorded. Experts on Guns and Shooting (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Experts on Guns and Shooting ON such a Well-understood subject as the use Of the shot gun the Opinion Of any one man is generally of little use to his fellows, and I venture to say that the more dogmatic a man may be, and the more experienced and successful, the less helpful his decided Opinions usually are to his fellow sportsmen. They will unquestionably be correct and appli cable to his own case, but his sight, his nerves, his muscular development, and his breathing apparatus, and his stamina may all, or any one Of them, make his advice, based upon his own experience, not only useless, but expensivelv mis leading to any other user Of the gun. For this reason, although a shooter Of many years' experience, I have not, in the following pages, put forward my own Opinions, except where I could not bring out the points I had in view with out their assistance. In shooting, as in gunmaking, I have gone to many experts for Opinions, and my care has been to present these opinions in a way that they shall not mislead by universal application, or by being misapplied to cases that they do not fit. My owii hardest tasks in life have been set when I had to start by unlearning all the teaching I had had upon certain subjects, and in my capacity as Editor ofla/ulnml and reviewer of sporting books, I came across from time to time so much accepted Opinion that did not stand analysis, and had certainly misled many sportsmen, that I determined to write the series of articles for Land and Water which is now collected in this form. That is the reason for the editorial we adopted in the following pages: that also is the excuse for criticism when those who know they have made mistakes, rather than admit a journalistic misfire, stick to their guns, careless of the harm they do to their friends.
