Sketch of the Internal Improvements Already Made by Pennsylvania Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Sketch of the Internal Improvements Already Made by Pennsylvania: With Observations Upon Her Physical and Fiscal Means for Their Extension; Particularly as They Have Reference to the Future Growth and Prosperity of Philadelphia First. - To endeavour to vindicate the aspersed reputation of Pennsylvania from the general accusation of indifference with regard to her internal improvements; and, Secondly. - To show the superior situation of Philadelphia geographically considered for the attraction of the great and increasing trade of the countries bordering on the Susquehanna, the Lakes, and the Western rivers. On the first of these points, there has prevailed a very general silence. Thousands could have said, much better than myself, what I am desirous to communicate; but no one having stept forth to rectify the erroneous opinions which exist both abroad and at home in relation to the efforts made by the legislature and the people, for the advancement of the interior of this commonwealth, I have ventured, with great diffidence, to lay before the public, such proofs as I possess, in order to contradict these disadvantageous reports. We listen with patience to the New-England, New-York, and Maryland writers, whose praises on their own doings, rise, not unfrequently, to the most exalted panegyric. We republish these praises, in perfect good nature, notwithstanding they are commonly accompanied by side-blows at poor Pennsylvania, which those writers affect to pity, because it is possessed, as they say, by a government and people supine and sluggish. If silence gives consent, we must indeed be the contemptible race hinted at; for in relation to these accusations, our editors and writers seem tongue-tied. To disprove such discreditable allusions, as far as my humble efforts could reach, I obtained a place for a few numbers upon this subject, in a respectable newspaper of this city; but finding it susceptible of considerable development, and supposing that it might be made somewhat interesting by condensing it into an unbroken form, I have incorporated the substance of these numbers into the matter which compose the following sheets. The England and Holland of the Pilgrims (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The England and Holland of the Pilgrims Most of. The contents of this work were collected by my father, the late Dr. Henry M. Dexter. To this task he devoted much of his time for many years. Of Pilgrim descent and born almost within sight of Plymouth Rock, he desired to give to the world a more complete record than any which had been written of the religious and ecclesiastical movement in England that made the Pilgrims what they were, and of their emigration to Holland and their life there before they came to America. But he died in 1890, leaving his chosen task unaccomplished. In his first rough draft he had written five long chapters which appear in these pages as the first five books and a part Iof the sixth. But they were hardly more than rudely shaped masses of crude material, as he had not reached that work of revision which no one else was more competent than he to per form. By his will the manuscript passed at his death into the hands of Prof. Franklin B. Dexter, Litt. D., of Yale University, and myself. Professor Dexter completed the author's last chap ter, or book, and I have rewritten and edited the whole, adding considerable material obtained by my own researches. The Life of Cornelia Connelly, 1809 1879 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Life of Cornelia Connelly, 1809 1879: Foundress of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus I have been asked to write a brief preface to this Life of Mother Cornelia Connelly, the venerated Foundress of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. I very gladly accept this task, if only to be able to express my own deep appreciation of the high personal qualities, the manifest holiness and the indefatigable labours for God of this courageous woman. The Life must be read to understand fully how the expressions I have used are not in any way exaggerated, and I feel sure that all who peruse these pages will acknowledge that there are few existing biographies of any servant of God which are so full of incident, instruction and religious edification as may be found in them. There is much, too, that is quite out of the ordinary. There is romance and almost tragedy. The whole is a record of intense personal suffering borne with the fortitude of a valiant woman, because it was God's holy Will. There is success also, but success only valued by Cornelia Connelly because it too was according to His Almighty Will, and for the furtherance of His glory. It was ever His work, and His work only, that she desired, and for this she was ready to sacrifice with cheerful heart even her dearest wishes. As I read these pages I feel sure that few women could ever have worked under more complete submission to God's Providence than Mother Connelly displayed during the whole course of her life. Acting on this principle she was always able to show to the outside world, and even to those most intimate with her, that complete self-possession, cheerfulness and calmness for which she was remarkable. It is quite impossible to condense this life into a few pages without doing it an injustice, and hence I will merely indicate here a few facts regarding it. Psychological Methods of Testing Intelligence (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Psychological Methods of Testing Intelligence I undertook for the last German congress of psychology, held at Berlin, April, 1912, a general review of the psychological methods of testing intelligence. As I had only an hour at my disposal in my address, I could at that time do little more than outline certain of the main features of this very broad field. It seemed to me, however, hardly desirable to publish the address in the form in which it was given. I felt, on the contrary, that in view of the now ever-increasing interest displayed in the theme both in Germany and elsewhere and in view of the extraordinarily scattered nature of the literature - much of which, by the way, is difficult of access - that an exposition of the topic on a wider scale was demanded. So I have tried to elaborate my original review to this larger scale. I have treated in it three main topics: single tests, the serial method (after Binet-Simon) and the methods of correlation and estimation. In the form of my treatment, also, I have overstepped the bounds of the mere "general review." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Outlines of Physiology Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Outlines of Physiology: In Its Relations to Man As a Teacher of Physiology, I have felt the practical difficulty of placing before the student a systematic account of the science, as it relates to man, in the course of one hundred lectures. Without the exercise of restraint, there is the risk of being discursive in certain parts of the course, and superficial and meagre in other parts, so that the student obtains what may be regarded as a distorted view of the subject. This danger may be obviated by the use of a textbook which will, by logical arrangement and concise statement of the facts, aid both the Teacher and the Student. When I consider the limited time at a student's command for the study of each subject in the medical curriculum, I sympathize much with the opinion of the late Mr. Syme that short and concise text-books of the various subjects are of great practical use. The student cannot be expected to be acquainted with the historical development of the subject, nor should his time be occupied with prolonged discussion of theoretical questions, illustrated by conflicting opinions. What he needs is a statement of authenticated facts and generally received principles as these appear to the mind of his teacher. In writing the following work, I have constantly kept this in view. Excerpt from Discourse, in Which Is Shown That the State of Man Was Originally Necessarily Mutable, and Therefore Imperfect, Vol. 1 of 2: That This Imperfection Nevertheless Leads to a State Which Will Be Perfect and Immutable It is not, however, upon this ground so much as on that of the friendship which Your Grace formerly had, and, as I have reason to believe, continues to have towards me, that I presume to dedicate this work to you. It is a singular circumstance, that the writer, who in the preface is mentioned as having suggested the plan of this work to me, was patronized by a predecessor of Your Grace's in the honours which you are now in the possession of; his being so at least may be supposed, from his dedicating another work of his to the aforesaid predecessor of Your Grace's; and as I doubt not that this work of his was favourably received by the then Duke of Roxbrughe, I flatter myself that this of mine will meet with a like favourable reception from Your Grace, notwithstanding the greater excellency of this writer's work, as compared to this of mine. Historical Portraits of the Tudor Dynasty and the Reformation, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Historical Portraits of the Tudor Dynasty and the Reformation, Vol. 3 It was originally intended that this work should be brought to a close in three volumes; but such a concourse of characters, and so many important events occurred in England and other countries, during the Tudor dynasty, that it appeared to me impossible to bring the events of many years - or a portion of them - into the space intended for the results of my inquiries. I have been compelled, therefore, to extend the work to four volumes, and even then to use more brevity than the importance of the various incidents might seem to permit. It has been contended by some Reviewers, that "I have concerned myself too much with the statements of modern writers." But, I beg respectfully to reply, that the great object of my work is to remove the false impressions made upon the English reader by sectarian and party writers, remote and more recent. The second volume of this work has been condemned by some journals, for no other reason than that of placing before the world an honest record of the deeds of the public men of the reigns of Henry VIII., Edward VI., Queen Mary, and Elizabeth. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Shakespere's Macbeth Macbeth has been edited so often and so well that a school edition can contain little that is new. The present edition is, therefore, a compilation, and that to a much, greater extent than the acknowledgments in the notes would imply. The notes of previous editors have been freely used without indication of the sources from which they were drawn; when authority is given for a note, it is usually due to some special reason. Furthermore, in quoting other editors I have almost invariably quoted not from the original, but from Dr. Furness's variorum edition; in cases in which reference to that storehouse of learning will not disclose the source of my information, I have mentioned the scholar to whom I am indebted. It remains to say that of the few notes which I suppose myself to have contributed, such as are good probably belong in reality to the two men who taught me to read Shakspere, President Charles Manly of Furman University, and Professor G. L. Kittredge of Harvard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In 1932 there appeared the work of SCHMORL and JUNGHANNS, Die gesunde und kranke Wirbelsiiule im Rontgenbild, which laid the foundations of diagnostic radiology of the spine. Since that time the discipline has been extended and refined in a systematic manner and our knowledge has been greatly enriched by the large number of monographs in which leading experts have assembled additional data. An encyclopedic treatment of all that is currently known requires not only that reference be made to all work published since 1932 in order to reveal the problems that remain but also that a serious attempt be made to contribute to the solution of such problems. For this reason, Professor TONDURY and Professor THEILER of Zurich, who know more than anyone else about the ontogeny of the spine, have been invited to display their erudition in this field. Should contra dictions or divergent opinions on certain points be revealed through this confrontation with radiologically obtained findings, so much the better; the effect of this could only be to spur workers in both disciplines on to more advanced research. We have only to recall how in Goethe's time the premaxilla was still the subject of controversy, yet this great man pursuing his studies in comparative anatomy and anthropology was able to prove its existence beyond all doubt. Living Cycads (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Living Cycads The living cycads are fernlike or palmlike plants and are the surviving remnants of a line reaching back through the Mesozoic into the Paleozoic. The title The Living Cycads was chosen to contrast with The Fossil Cycads, a work in two large volumes by Professor G. R. Wieland, of Yale University, dealing with the extinct cycads of the Mesozoic. A study extending over more than fifteen years has necessitated trips to Mexico, Cuba, Australia, and Africa. All the genera and many of the species have been studied in the field, and material has been preserved for later study in the laboratory. In addition to investigations by the author, studies upon this material have been published by Dr. R. Thiessen, Dr. Sister Helen Angela, and Dr. F. Grace Smith, and studies by Mr. Ward L. Miller and Miss LaDema Langdon are in progress. Part I is an account of the distribution, general appearance, and field conditions of the cycads, together with some of the experiences which come to one who attempts an investigation involving so much travel in distant and varied tropical countries. Technical terms are avoided except in the names of plants. Part II presents the life-history of the group and is based largely upon my own observations in the field and in the laboratory. Wherever statements are made which have not been confirmed by my own observation the authority is quoted. Excerpt from Prose and Poetry (1856-1870) I Was the master-mason of a church that was built more than six hundred years ago; it is now two hundred years since that church vanished from the face of the earth; it was destroyed utterly, - no fragment of it was left; not even the great pillars that bore up the tower at the cross, where the choir used to join the nave. No one knows now even where it stood, only in this very autumn-tide, if you knew the place, you would see the heaps made by the earth-covered ruins heaving the yellow corn into glorious waves, so that the place where my church used to be is as beautiful now as when it stood in all its splendour. I do not remember very much about the land where my church was; I have quite forgotten the name of it, but I know it was very beautiful, and even now, while I am thinking of it, comes a flood of old memories, and I almost seem to see it again, - that old beautiful land! only dimly do I see it in spring and summer and winter, but I see it in autumn-tide clearly now; yes, clearer, clearer, oh! so bright and glorious! yet it was beautiful too in spring, when the brown earth began to grow green: beautiful in summer, when the blue sky looked so much bluer, if you could hem a piece of it in between the new white carving; beautiful in the solemn starry nights, so solemn that it almost reached agony - the awe and joy one had in their great beauty. But of all these beautiful times, I remember the whole only of autumn-tide; the others come in bits to me; I can think only of parts of them, but all of autumn; and of all days and nights in autumn, I remember one more particularly. To the People of Suffolk, of All Parties (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from To the People of Suffolk, of All Parties To you I present a fair account of the expenses of our government at different periods. The first year that Mr. Monroe was President, 1821, there was spent ten millions, seven hundred and twenty-three thousand, four hundred and seventy-nine dollars. The first year that Mr. Adams was President, 1825, was spent eleven millions, four hundred and ninety thousand, four hundred and fifty-nine dollars. The first year General Jackson was President, 1829, was spent twelve millions, six hundred and eighty-seven thousand, two hundred and sixteen dollars. From this you may notice there has been a gradual increase of the expenses as our population and business increased for eight years. Please notice, and for ever remember, what it cost to do our public business, eight years from that time, when.all their machinery was in full operation, and under the control of the constructor, Mr. Van Buren, with Mr. Silas Wright, Mr. Buchanan, and Col. Benton, senators, and Mr. Cambrelling, and a kw more, to assist in working these shaving machines; they worked off our money last year; by the report of the Secretary of the Treasury, thirty-five millions, two hundred and eighty-one thousand, three hundred and sixty-one dollars. This is a fine sum for them to spend for us in one year; it is three hundred and eighty-one thousand, three hundred and sixty-one dollars, more than was spent in the three years above mentioned, by the three first named Presidents. Shame to those who did complain so bitterly against Mr. Adams for spending, as they said, too much, and wrongfully, too, while at this time, when more than three times as much is spent, not one word of complaint from them do I hear. If they were honest at that time, they have lost it, or that honest principle would not sleep at this time. Excerpt from Lyra Venatica: A Collection of Hunting Songs This small collection lays claim to no further merit than that, with three or four exceptions, it contains nothing which has been published in such a collection before. I have taken all trouble possible to find out about each song - some of which, however, are very old. Should the above claim prove to be mistaken, or should anything be published herein unadvisedly or incorrectly, I sincerely apologise to those concerned. At least half were collected by my father, just as they happened to take his fancy, and I thought it was a pity these should remain in oblivion. Should they give as much pleasure to those few whom I think they may interest, as they have to myself, my trouble will be amply repaid. In conclusion, I must thank those who have so willingly assisted me with information, many of whom were kind enough to send me fresh songs, and thus increase this small volume and its interest. More especially am I indebted to Mi's. Chaworth Musters, Isabella Marchioness of Exeter, Colonel Greenhill Gardyne (late Coldstream Guards), Major Longstaffe, Mrs. Cracroft-Amcotts, R. E. K. Excerpt from The Preparation for Old Age: A Sermon on the Death of Deacon Nathaniel Livermore, Preached in the Church of the Cambridgeport Parish, August 17, 1862 Those thus longing to reach it, a thing we are specially drawn to. It does not have largely our respect, our reverence, our sympathy. I believe the feeling We have about age, about the old, is rather a sentiment than a principle; a feeling we allow the abstract quality rather than bestow upon the individual. There is a something about age which appeals even to the thoughtless, and calls out a momentary respect, possibly enthusiasm. I shall always remember with what enthusiasm two frivolous young men near me, at a place of amusement, broke away from their foolish talk, as a noble looking specimen of the old man took his place near them; but I doubt if that mere impulse would not sum up all their feeling about it. I doubt if they would have lived with that old age in that same spirit, yielding it day by day, year by year, the tribute of reverent respect. The. Fact is, that the picture we conjure to ourselves of old age, is one in which fancy has large share. There are many and much repeated phrases descriptive of it, and each of these has. Better Angels of Our Nature Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This title is shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize 2012. This acclaimed book by Steven Pinker, author of "The Language Instinct" and "The Blank Slate", argues that, contrary to popular belief, humankind has become progressively less violent, over millenia and decades. Can violence really have declined? The images of conflict we see daily on our screens from around the world suggest this is an almost obscene claim to be making. Extraordinarily, however, Steven Pinker shows violence within and between societies - both murder and warfare - really has declined from prehistory to today. We are much less likely to die at someone else's hands than ever before. Even the horrific carnage of the last century, when compared to the dangers of pre-state societies, is part of this trend. Debunking both the idea of the 'noble savage' and an over-simplistic Hobbesian notion of a 'nasty, brutish and short' life, Steven Pinker argues that modernity and its cultural institutions are actually making us better people. "One of the most important books I've read - not just this year, but ever...For me, what's most important about "The Better Angels of Our Nature" are its insights into how to help achieve positive outcomes. How can we encourage a less violent, more just society, particularly for the poor? Steven Pinker shows us ways we can make those positive trajectories a little more likely. That's a contribution, not just to historical scholarship, but to the world". (Bill Gates). "Brilliant, mind-altering...Everyone should read this astonishing book". (David Runciman, "Guardian"). "A supremely important book. To have command of so much research, spread across so many different fields, is a masterly achievement. Pinker convincingly demonstrates that there has been a dramatic decline in violence, and he is persuasive about the causes of that decline". (Peter Singer, "New York Times"). "[A] sweeping new review of the history of human violence...[Pinker has] the kind of academic superbrain that can translate otherwise impenetrable statistics into a meaningful narrative of human behaviour ...impeccable scholarship". (Tony Allen-Mills, "Sunday Times"). "Written in Pinker's distinctively entertaining and clear personal style...a marvellous synthesis of science, history and storytelling". (Clive Cookson, "Financial Times"). "Pinker's scholarhsip is astounding ...flawless ...masterful". (Joanna Bourke, "The Times"). Steven Pinker is the Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. Until 2003, he taught in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT. He conducts research on language and cognition, writes for publications such as "The New York Times", "Time" and "Slate", and is the author of six books, including "The Language Instinct", "How the Mind Works", "The Blank Slate" and "The Stuff of Thought".
