Drawing on his extensive research and teaching experience in modeling and simulation of a wide range of systems - from engineering to social systems and ecosystems - the author presents the fundamental concepts and approaches for understanding and modeling the complex systems shaping the dynamics of our world. The book is complemented by a survey of system topics and of models from many fields, and by an extensive bibliography on the many systems-related subjects covered. Hartmut Bossel is Professor Emeritus of environmental systems analysis. He taught for many years at the University of California in Santa Barbara and the University of Kassel, Germany, where he was director of the Center for Environmental Systems Research until his retirement. He holds an engineering degree from the Technical University of Darmstadt, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. With a background in engineering, systems science, and mathematical modeling, he has led many research projects and future studies in different countries, developing computer simulation models and decision support systems in the areas of energy supply policy, global dynamics, orientation of behavior, agricultural policy, and forest dynamics and management. He has written numerous books on modeling and simulation of dynamic systems, social change and future paths, and has published widely in the scientific literature in several fields. Bossel is author of a System Zoo containing over one hundred simulation models of diverse systems.

The book is intended for intermediate and upper-intermediate students of architecture and construction technology in technical colleges and universities who want to improve their knowledge of English. The textbook consists of 15 units (units 1 - 7 have been written by Renata Jennołowicz, units 8 - 15 by Monika Śleszyńska) which contain the same sections: Reading, Vocabulary, Speaking, Focus on Grammar, Narnes to Remember and Facts to Consider. We have also included the index of names and the glossary of architectonic terms. Each unit has at least one reading passage that has been adapted or rewritten mainly from Jurgen Tietz's The Story ofArchitecture of the 20'" Century or selected from magazines, brochures and the Internet. The passages are followed by comprehension exercises such as answering questions, deciding whether statements are true or false, fitting sentences into gapped texts or matching information or headings to a text. Typically, each Reading section begins with a vocabulary matching exercise that enriches the knowledge of technical terms. Activities in Vocabulary sections range from multiple-choice vocabuilary exercises, gap filung or word formation to quizzes and puzzles. They are airned at building up technical but also general English vocabulary. Those who want to learn some collocations, prepositions or negative prefixes will be satisfied as the book caters for the needs of different learners. Speaking sections provide opportunities for the development of speaking skills in the architectural context. Pair or group work is suggested as the medium of this section but students can get extra practice from whole class discussions and debates. In our tendency to the compactness and brevity of the exposition, we attempted, however, to produce a guide-book which would be easy to understand, convenient to use and as accurate as possible (as much as it is required in engineering). It should be pointed out that this book is neither a handbook nor a compendium, but a guide-book. Therefore it is not written as systematically as a handbook should be written. Hence the reader should not be surprised to find, for example, I'HOpital's rule in the section devoted to computation of limits which is a part of the chapter "Introduction to the analysis" placed before the concept of the derivative, or information about the Gamma function in the chapter "Algebra"-just after the concept of the factorial. There are many such "imperfections" in the book. Thus a reader who wants to acquire certain information is advised to use not only the table of contents but also the alpha betical index inserted at the end of the book. If a problem mentioned in the text is explained in detail in another place of the book, then the corresponding page is indicated in a footnote.
