Whistler Journal (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Whistler Journal This book needs no preface or apology or explanation. Each will be found in it. It is the story of the life Whistler lived with us during the three years after he asked us to write it, and the story he told us of the sixty-six previous years of his troubled, triumphal career - the foundation upon which the biography was built up. But in a biography the intimate tone of a journal is not appropriate and only certain portions could be used. We have had both pleasure and pain in recording what he gave us and also what we learned of him from others. For, when we were writing the Authorized Life, we received aid and assistance from every one except his wife's family who had nothing they could have given us save the documents and letters they may possess, if they preserved them. Mr. Freer was the other exception. Now, however, Mr. Lodge, Curator of the Freer Collection, has granted us the permissions we have asked and, with - we hope - the early opening of that Gallery, a large amount of information about Whistler, as well as many of his important works, will be available. Whistler's fame has vastly increased, the commercial value of his work - now the artistic standard - has also vastly increased, and we have done what we could to increase the world's knowledge of Whistler as we knew him. Miss Philip has given her interpretation of him and his wishes. When his Society proposed to honour his memory by a Memorial Exhibition, she was at first willing to help. Then she became sure he did not wish his work in an English Gallery, but not till she had shown it in the International. Later on, there seemed no question that his wishes could not be opposed to her contributing to a small Whistler exhibition at the Tate Gallery, or to her making a special exhibition from her own collection of his paintings and pastels at Obach's. She, and Arthur Studd, who supported her, and who afterwards bequeathed his Whistlers to the British nation, leave us in doubt therefore as to "the master's wishes." Nor is the information, attributed to Miss Philip this year, concerning the printing of the lithographs exhibited at Obach's in London and Keppel's in New York exactly what one would have expected from Whistler. Many besides Freer are dead - saddest to us, William Heinemann, Whistler's true friend and our true friend, killed like so many good men by the war. Richard Canfield is gone and his collection scattered, all save the lithographs which are preserved in the Brooklyn Museum. And Arthur Jerome Eddy who, like Canfield, will live by his portrait. Mom!" The urgency in the young man's voice awakened Bette from a deep sleep. The dream was so vivid that it prompted Bette to pray, "Lord, help my son, please help my son," not knowing which of her sons was in need of prayer. This cry for help ushered in the most dramatic season of Bette's life, as the Lord orchestrated a reunion with the son she had placed for adoption at birth. Forty years earlier, Bette was a single graduate student with a crisis pregnancy. Her desperation led her to two abortion attempts and an emergency delivery at six months. With no way to care for a baby, Bette placed him for adoption. She returned to her studies and went on with her life, eventually marrying and having two sons. Yet, she always wondered what had happened to that tiny baby. Four days after her dream and call to prayer, Bette received a life-changing phone call. "Hello, my name is Michael Moore. I have a personal matter I would like to discuss with you dating all the way back to 1970. I've been trying to find my birth mother, and your name turned up in my search." With her world up-ended, Bette consulted with her husband and a friend who had recently experienced a similar reunion with the granddaughter she had never met. Through their advice and much prayer, Bette summoned the courage to talk with Michael about his birth and discovered that indeed, this was her son. Michael had been born three months premature and was adopted at three months of age. Amazingly, he had survived his mother's early first abortion attempt in which a possible twin was lost, the less than adequate nutrition his young mother had provided, along with her drastic weight loss. The second abortion attempt had prompted his early delivery. Bette's past experience in development disabilities testing had led her to fear severe mental and physical problems for the child. It was a miracle he had simply survived--much more amazing with his health, mental, and physical abilities all intact. When Bette and her husband agreed to meet with Michael and his family, she discovered that she had not only a son, but a daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. The children were eight-year-old twins - a boy and a girl - and a younger four-year-old son. With her family now reunited, Bette and her husband have been able to experience birthday parties for the children as well as attend school, church, and sporting events and other performances. Most remarkable of all have been the acceptance and developing relationship of Bette's two sons with their unexpected older half-brother. They see Michael as someone they can trust with questions about relationships and spiritual matters as well as enjoy his companionship. This close relationship led her older son to invite Michael to be a groomsman in his wedding and for the children to be a part of the ceremony. Unexpected Family is the story of a life saved and a life redeemed. You will be amazed by the many miracles that God performed during this remarkable journey of reconciliation and redemption, as He has indeed made beauty out of the ashes of the past.

Creation a Song of the Ages; Songs of the Christ and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Creation a Song of the Ages; Songs of the Christ and Other Poems Starting to study anew the Biblical account of Creation, for exegetical and pulpit purposes alone, a poem sprang up at once into mind. Seeking a sermon, there was found a song. The opening stanzas were written immediately; the remainder was completed after an interval, made necessary by the varied duties of a pastor's life, and the need of more extended research in special directions. An inspiration at first, the conception has been wrought out with painstaking care and thorough re-examination of authorities bearing upon scientific questions involved. Geologists are substantially agreed in finding evidence of distinct geologic ages, forming an ascending scale from the lowest and first formative conditions up to the highest and most complete. And it is found, upon comparison, that these progressive steps in creative work correspond in a surprising way with the Six Days of the Mosaic account. It is observed, too, that the order in which these ages have progressed is precisely that which is pictured in the Days of Moses. For example, Geology points to a period of time wherein the earth was subject to the action of original, formative, and contending elements, before the beginning of vegetable or animal life. So does the Bible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Valley Thunder Savas Beatie

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Charles R. Knight's 'Valley Thunder' is the first full-length account in more than three decades to examine the combat at New Market on May 15, 1864-the battle that opened the pivotal 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign.Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who set in motion the wide-ranging operation to subjugate the South in 1864, intended to attack the Confederacy on multiple fronts so it could no longer "take advantage of interior lines." One of the keys to success in the Eastern Theater was control of the Shenandoah Valley, a strategically important and agriculturally abundant region that helped feed Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Grant tasked Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel, a German immigrant with a mixed fighting record, and a motley collection of units numbering some 10,000 men to clear the Valley and threaten Lee's left flank. Opposing Sigel was John C. Breckinridge, a former vice president and now Confederate major general who assembled a scratch command to repulse the invading Federals. Included within the ranks of his 4,500-man army were cadets from the Virginia Military Institute under the direction of VMI Commandant of Cadets Lt. Col. Scott Ship, who had marched eighty miles in just four days to fight Sigel. When the two armies faced off at New Market, Breckinridge boldly announced, "I shall advance on him. We can attack and whip them here and we will do it!" As the general rode by the cadets he shouted, "Gentlemen, I trust I will not need your services today; but if I do, I know you will do your duty." The sharp fighting seesawed back and forth during a drenching rainstorm, and was not concluded until the cadets were dramatically inserted into the battle line to repulse a Federal attack and launch one of their own.The Confederate victory drove Union forces from the Valley, but they would return, reinforced and under new leadership, within a month. Before being repulsed, these Federals would march over the field at New Market and capture Staunton, burn VMI in Lexington (partly in retaliation for the cadets' participation at New Market), and very nearly capture Lynchburg. Operations in the Valley on a much larger scale that summer would permanently sweep the Confederates from the "Bread Basket of the Confederacy."'Valley Thunder: The Battle of New Market' is based upon years of primary research and a firsthand appreciation of the battlefield terrain. Knight's balanced and objective approach includes a detailed examination of the complex prelude leading up to the day of battle. His entertaining prose introduces a new generation of readers to a wide array of soldiers, civilians, and politicians who found themselves swept up in one of the war's most gripping engagements.About the Author: Charles R. Knight is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He is a former Historical Interpreter at New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, and currently serves as the curator of the Douglas MacArthur Memorial. Charlie has written articles for various Civil War and railroad publications, including Blue and Gray, Classic Trains, and NRHS Bulletin. He lives in Norfolk, Virginia, with his wife and son.returncharacterreturncharacter returncharacterreturncharacter REVIEWS returncharacterreturncharacter"Valley Thunder surely takes its place now among the dozen finest and most complete accounts of any Civil War action, and it would be hard to name any account of a secondary fight of this size that has been better treated. Knight's study is a contribution not just to Virginia or Confederate literature, but a book that will serve the entire Civil War community for generations to come, and probably much longer than my thirty-six years. The only way we will get a better account is if Breckinridge and the others come to life and give it to us from their own lips." -- William C. Davis, former editor of Civil War Times, Illustrated, author of The Battle of New Market (1975), and the award-winning author of Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour"Charles Knight has provided an insightful and well-researched addition to the catalogue of works on the Battle of New Market. The Battlefield Park staff applaud this effort by one of our former co-workers!" -- Scott H. Harris, Director, New Market Battlefield State Historical Park"Mr. Knight has mined fresh material in an attempt to raise the fog of the battlefield. His use of firsthand accounts provide a fresh look at troop positions and movements. Valley Thunder is the first major study in forty years of one of the most important secondary actions of the war. It is an important addition to the library of the war in the Shenandoah Valley." -- Col. Keith E. Gibson, Director, VMI Museum Operations..".balanced and objective approach...exciting and informative." Lone Star Book Review, 08/2010

Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination Regnery Publishing Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

April 14, 1865. A famous actor pulls a trigger in the presidential balcony, leaps to the stage and escapes, as the president lies fatally wounded. In the panic that follows, forty-six terrified people scatter in and around Ford's Theater as soldiers take up stations by the doors and the audience surges into the streets chanting, "Burn the place down!" This is the untold story of Lincoln's assassination: the forty-six stage hands, actors, and theater workers on hand for the bewildering events in the theater that night, and what each of them witnessed in the chaos-streaked hours before John Wilkes Booth was discovered to be the culprit. In Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination, historian Thomas A. Bogar delves into previously unpublished sources to tell the story of Lincoln's assassination from behind the curtain, and the tale is shocking. Police rounded up and arrested dozens of innocent people, wasting time that allowed the real culprit to get further away. Some closely connected to John Wilkes Booth were not even questioned, while innocent witnesses were relentlessly pursued. Booth was more connected with the production than you might have known--learn how he knew each member of the cast and crew, which was a hotbed of secessionist resentment. Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination also tells the story of what happened to each of these witnesses to history, after the investigation was over--how each one lived their lives after seeing one of America's greatest presidents shot dead without warning. Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination is an exquisitely detailed look at this famous event from an entirely new angle. It is must reading for anyone fascinated with the saga of Lincoln's life and the Civil War era.

It has new material on Marlowe in relation to Canterbury, also on his home life, schooling, and six and a half years at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and includes fresh data on his reading, teachers, and early achievements, including a new letter with a new date for the famous 'putative portrait' of Marlowe at Cambridge. The biography uses for the first time the Latin writings of his friend Thomas Watson to illuminate Marlowe's life in London and his career as a spy (that is, as a courier and agent for the Elizabethan Privy Council). There are new accounts of him on the continent, particularly at Flushing or Vlissingen, where he was arrested. The book also more fully explains Marlowe's relations with his chief patron, Thomas Walsingham, than ever before. This is also the first biography to explore in detail Marlowe's relations with fellow playwrights such as Kyd and Shakespeare, and to show how Marlowe's relations with Shakespeare evolved from 1590 to 1593. With closer views of him in relation to the Elizabethan stage than have appeared in any biography, the book examines in detail his aims, mind, and techniques as exhibited in all of his plays, from Dido, the Tamburlaine dramas, and Doctor Faustus through to The Jew of Malta and Edward II. It offers new treatments of his evolving versions of 'The Passionate Shepherd', and displays circumstances, influences, and the bearings of Shakespeare's 'Venus and Adonis' in relation to Marlowe's 'Hero and Leander'. Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on Marlowe's friendships and so-called 'homosexuality'. Fresh information is brought to bear on his seductive use of blasphemy, his street fights, his methods of preparing himself for writing, and his atheism and religious interests. The book also explores his attraction to scientists and mathematicians such as Thomas Harriot and others in the Ralegh-Northumberland set of thinkers and experimenters. Finally, there is new data on spies and business agents such as Robert Poley, Nicholas Skeres, and Ingram Frizer, and a more exact account of the circumstances that led up to Marlowe's murder.

Abandoned as a baby, Andy McNab's start in life was tough. Growing up in South London with foster parents, and surrounded by poverty, he attended seven schools in as many years, disillusioned and in remedial classes. It wasn't long before his life descended into petty crime. By the age of sixteen, he was in juvenile detention. Recruited into the Army from there, it soon became apparent that he had the reading age of an eleven year old. The next six months in the Army education system changed his course of his life forever. "Today Everything Changes" is the inspiring story of when life changed for Andy McNab.
