Selected Papers in Logic and Foundations, Didactics, Economics Springer

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This volume brings together those papers of mine which may be of interest not only to various specialists but also to philosophers. Many of my writings in mathematics were motivated by epistemological considerations; some papers originated in the critique of certain views that at one time dominated the discussions of the Vienna Cirele; others grew out of problems in teaching fundamental ideas of mathematics; sti II others were occasioned by personal relations with economists. Hence a wide range of subjects will be discussed: epistemology, logic, basic concepts of pure and applied mathematics, philosophical ideas resulting from geometric studies, mathematical didactics and, finally, economics. The papers also span a period of more than fifty years. What unifies the various parts of the book is the spirit of searching for the elarification of basic concepts and methods and of articulating hidden ideas and tacit procedures. Part 1 ineludes papers published about 1930 which expound an idea that Carnap, after a short period of opposition in the Cirele, fully adopted ; and, under the name "Princip/e of To/erance", he eloquently formulated it in great generality in his book, Logica/ Syntax of Language (1934), through which it was widely disseminated. "The New Logic" in Chapter 1 furthermore ineludes the first report (I932) to a larger public of Godel's epochal discovery presented among the great logic results of ali time. Chapter 2 is a translation of an often quoted 1930 paper presenting a detailed exposition and critique of intuitionism.

Statistical Foundations of Actuarial Learning and its Applications Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This open access book discusses the statistical modeling of insurance problems, a process which comprises data collection, data analysis and statistical model building to forecast insured events that may happen in the future. It presents the mathematical foundations behind these fundamental statistical concepts and how they can be applied in daily actuarial practice. Statistical modeling has a wide range of applications, and, depending on the application, the theoretical aspects may be weighted differently: here the main focus is on prediction rather than explanation. Starting with a presentation of state-of-the-art actuarial models, such as generalized linear models, the book then dives into modern machine learning tools such as neural networks and text recognition to improve predictive modeling with complex features.  Providing practitioners with detailed guidance on how to apply machine learning methods to real-world data sets, and how to interpret the results without losing sight of the mathematical assumptions on which these methods are based, the book can serve as a modern basis for an actuarial education syllabus.

Fractional Calculus Models and Numerical Methods - 2867112059

Fractional Calculus Models and Numerical Methods World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The subject of fractional calculus and its applications (that is, convolution-type pseudo-differential operators including integrals and derivatives of any arbitrary real or complex order) has gained considerable popularity and importance during the past three decades or so, mainly due to its applications in diverse fields of science and engineering. These operators have been used to model problems with anomalous dynamics, however, they also are an effective tool as filters and controllers, and they can be applied to write complicated functions in terms of fractional integrals or derivatives of elementary functions, and so on. This book will give readers the possibility of finding very important mathematical tools for working with fractional models and solving fractional differential equations, such as a generalization of Stirling numbers in the framework of fractional calculus and a set of efficient numerical methods. Moreover, we will introduce some applied topics, in particular fractional variational methods which are used in physics, engineering or economics. We will also discuss the relationship between semi-Markov continuous-time random walks and the space-time fractional diffusion equation, which generalizes the usual theory relating random walks to the diffusion equation. These methods can be applied in finance, to model tick-by-tick (log)-price fluctuations, in insurance theory, to study ruin, as well as in macroeconomics as prototypical growth models. All these topics are complementary to what is dealt with in existing books on fractional calculus and its applications currently existing in the market. This book will be written with a trade-off in mind between full mathematical rigor and the needs of readers coming from different applied areas of science and engineering. In particular, the numerical methods listed in the book are presented in a readily accessible way that immediately allows the readers to implement them on a computer in a programming language of their choice.

Prime Numbers and Computer Methods for Factorization Birkhauser Boston Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Published in the mid 1980s, the highly successful first edition of this title investigated the mathematical underpinnings of computer encryption, a discipline drawing heavily on the factorization of large numbers into primes. The book served a broad audience of researchers, students, practitioners of cryptography, and non-scientific readers with a mathematical inclination, treating four fundamental problems: the number of primes below a given limit, the approximate number of primes, the recognition of primes, and the factorization of large numbers. §The second edition of the work, released in the mid 1990s, expanded significantly upon the original book, including important advances in computational prime number theory and factorization, as well as revised and updated tables. With explicit algorithms and computer programs, the author illustrated applications while attempting to discuss many classically important results along with more modern discoveries.§Although it has been over a decade since the publication of this second edition, the theory it contained remains still highly relevant, and the particular cryptosystem it addressed (RSA public-key) is ubiquitous. Therefore, in addition to providing a historical perspective on many of the issues in modern prime number theory and data encryption, this soft cover version which reproduces the second edition exactly as it originally appeared offers affordable access to a great deal of valuable information. Highly readable for a wide variety of mathematicians, students of applied number theory, and others, this modern classic will be of interest to anyone involved in the study of number theory and cryptography.§Reviews:§Here is an outstanding technical monograph on recursive number theory and its numerous automated techniques. It successfully passes a critical milestone not allowed to many books, viz., a second edition... All in all, this handy volume continues to be an attractive combination of number-theoretic precision, practicality, and theory with a rich blend of computer science. Zentralblatt MATH§The book...is an enthusiastic introduction to some of the ideas concerned with primes and factorization. It should be of interest to anyone who would like to learn about the use of computers in number theory. Mathematical Reviews

Automata Theory & its Applications - 2212826389

Automata Theory & its Applications Birkhauser

Inne 1

Automata and Their Applications is a uniform treatment of the theory of finite state machines on finite and infinite strings and trees. Many books deal with automata on finite strings, but there are very few expositions that prove the fundamental results of automata on infinite strings and trees. These results have important applications to modeling parallel computation and concurrency, the specification and verification of sequential and concurrent programs, databases, operating systems, computational complexity, and decision methods in logic and algebra. Thus, this textbook fills an important gap in the literature. Beginning with coverage of all standard fundamental results regarding finite automata, the book deals Buchi and Rabin automata and their applications to operating systems, temporal logic and communication systems, as well as to various logical theories. The book is self-contained with numerous examples, illustrations, exercises, and is suitable for a two-semester undergraduate course or a one-semester graduate course/seminar. Since no advanced mathematical background is required, the text is also useful for self-study by computer science professionals who wish to understand the foundations of modern formal approaches to software development, validation, and verification.

Theory and Applications of Fractional Differential Equations - 2878322703

Theory and Applications of Fractional Differential Equations Elsevier Science & Technology

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This monograph provides the most recent and up-to-date developments on fractional differential and fractional integro-differential equations involving many different potentially useful operators of fractional calculus. The subject of fractional calculus and its applications (that is, calculus of integrals and derivatives of any arbitrary real or complex order) has gained considerable popularity and importance during the past three decades or so, due mainly to its demonstrated applications in numerous seemingly diverse and widespread fields of science and engineering. Some of the areas of present-day applications of fractional models include Fluid Flow, Solute Transport or Dynamical Processes in Self-Similar and Porous Structures, Diffusive Transport akin to Diffusion, Material Viscoelastic Theory, Electromagnetic Theory, Dynamics of Earthquakes, Control Theory of Dynamical Systems, Optics and Signal Processing, Bio-Sciences, Economics, Geology, Astrophysics, Probability and Statistics, Chemical Physics, and so on.In the above-mentioned areas, there are phenomena with estrange kinetics which have a microscopic complex behaviour, and their macroscopic dynamics can not be characterized by classical derivative models. The fractional modelling is an emergent tool which use fractional differential equations including derivatives of fractional order, that is, we can speak about a derivative of order 1/3, or square root of 2, and so on. Some of such fractional models can have solutions which are non-differentiable but continuous functions, such as Weierstrass type functions. Such kinds of properties are, obviously, impossible for the ordinary models. What are the useful properties of these fractional operators which help in the modelling of so many anomalous processes? From the point of view of the authors and from known experimental results, most of the processes associated with complex systems have non-local dynamics involving long-memory in time, and the fractional integral and fractional derivative operators do have some of those characteristics. This book is written primarily for the graduate students and researchers in many different disciplines in the mathematical, physical, engineering and so many others sciences, who are interested not only in learning about the various mathematical tools and techniques used in the theory and widespread applications of fractional differential equations, but also in further investigations which emerge naturally from (or which are motivated substantially by) the physical situations modelled mathematically in the book. This monograph consists of a total of eight chapters and a very extensive bibliography. The main objective of it is to complement the contents of the other books dedicated to the study and the applications of fractional differential equations. The aim of the book is to present, in a systematic manner, results including the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the Cauchy type problems involving nonlinear ordinary fractional differential equations, explicit solutions of linear differential equations and of the corresponding initial-value problems through different methods, closed-form solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations, and a theory of the so-called sequential linear fractional differential equations including a generalization of the classical Frobenius method, and also to include an interesting set of applications of the developed theory. It is mainly application oriented and it contains a complete theory of Fractional Differential Equations. It can be used as a postgraduate-level textbook in many different disciplines within science and engineering and it contains an up-to-date bibliography. It provides problems and directions for further investigations. Fractional Modelling is an emergent tool with demonstrated applications in numerous seemingly diverse and widespread fields of science and engineering. It contains many examples.

Nonlinear Optimization Princeton University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Optimization is one of the most important areas of modern applied mathematics, with applications in fields from engineering and economics to finance, statistics, management science, and medicine. While many books have addressed its various aspects, "Nonlinear Optimization" is the first comprehensive treatment that will allow graduate students and researchers to understand its modern ideas, principles, and methods within a reasonable time, but without sacrificing mathematical precision. Andrzej Ruszczynski, a leading expert in the optimization of nonlinear stochastic systems, integrates the theory and the methods of nonlinear optimization in a unified, clear, and mathematically rigorous fashion, with detailed and easy-to-follow proofs illustrated by numerous examples and figures. The book covers convex analysis, the theory of optimality conditions, duality theory, and numerical methods for solving unconstrained and constrained optimization problems. It addresses not only classical material but also modern topics such as optimality conditions and numerical methods for problems involving non differentiable functions, semi-definite programming, metric regularity and stability theory of set-constrained systems, and sensitivity analysis of optimization problems. Based on a decade's worth of notes the author compiled in successfully teaching the subject, this book will help readers to understand the mathematical foundations of the modern theory and methods of nonlinear optimization and to analyze new problems, develop optimality theory for them, and choose or construct numerical solution methods. It is a must for anyone seriously interested in optimization.
