Ron Chernow - Titan Random House USA Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

John D. Rockefeller, Sr. - history's first billionaire and the patriarch of America's most famous dynasty - is an icon whose true nature has eluded three generations of historians. Now Ron Chernow, the National Book Award-winning biographer of the Morgan and Warburg banking families, gives us a history of the mogul "etched with uncommon objectivity and literary grace . . . as detailed, balanced, and psychologically insightful a portrait of the tycoon as we may ever have" (Kirkus Reviews).Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller's exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book will indelibly alter our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world's richest man by creating America's most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America. Rockefeller was likely the most controversial businessman in our nation's history. Critics charged that his empire was built on unscrupulous tactics: grand-scale collusion with the railroads, predatory pricing, industrial espionage, and wholesale bribery of political officials. The titan spent more than thirty years dodging investigations until Teddy Roosevelt and his trustbusters embarked on a marathon crusade to bring Standard Oil to bay. While providing abundant new evidence of Rockefeller's misdeeds, Chernow discards the stereotype of the cold-blooded monster to sketch an unforgettablyhuman portrait of a quirky, eccentric original. A devout Baptist and temperance advocate, Rockefeller gave money more generously - his chosen philanthropies included the Rockefeller Foundation, the University of Chicago, and what is today Rockefeller University - than anyone.

A person with synesthesia might feel the flavor of food on her fingertips, sense the letter "J" as shimmering magenta or the number "5" as emerald green, hear and taste her husband's voice as buttery golden brown. Synesthetes rarely talk about their peculiar sensory gift--believing either that everyone else senses the world exactly as they do, or that no one else does. Yet synesthesia occurs in one in twenty people, and is even more common among artists. One famous synesthete was novelist Vladimir Nabokov, who insisted as a toddler that the colors on his wooden alphabet blocks were "all wrong." His mother understood exactly what he meant because she, too, had synesthesia. Nabokov's son Dmitri, who recounts this tale in the afterword to this book, is also a synesthete--further illustrating how synesthesia runs in families. In Wednesday Is Indigo Blue, pioneering researcher Richard Cytowic and distinguished neuroscientist David Eagleman explain the neuroscience and genetics behind synesthesia's multisensory experiences.Because synesthesia contradicted existing theory, Cytowic spent twenty years persuading colleagues that it was a real--and important--brain phenomenon rather than a mere curiosity. Today scientists in fifteen countries are exploring synesthesia and how it is changing the traditional view of how the brain works. Cytowic and Eagleman argue that perception is already multisensory, though for most of us its multiple dimensions exist beyond the reach of consciousness. Reality, they point out, is more subjective than most people realize. No mere curiosity, synesthesia is a window on the mind and brain, highlighting the amazing differences in the way people see the world.

One can't help but see this as a response to Suzannah Lessard's The Architect of Desire. Lessard wrote of her great-grandfather's presence as being 'something dark right there in the light.' But after reading this collection of letters, it is easy to understand the affection he inspired in his only surviving son, the editor's father-in-law. Lawrence Grant White had mounted each letter in leather books and at their close wrote of the tawdry murder that has sadly overshadowed his father's accomplishment: 'On the night of June 25th, 1906... Stanford White was shot from behind by a crazed profligate [Henry Thaw] whose great wealth was used to besmirch his victim's memory.' These letters, written primarily to his mother, father, bride-to-be and great friend the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, say much more about Stanford White as a man than as an architect-although there are some rather tedious details about White's collaboration with Saint-Gaudens and the odd aside, as when America's premier neoclassicist exclaims to his father, 'Shades of Phidias protect us, there is a steam tramway running around the base of the Akropolis.' What emerges is a rather funny, boisterous, charming man, deeply concerned with the people he loved. For example, in one letter to his mother shortly after his marriage, he writes, 'I do not wish you to think that you are in the least bit less to me now than before I was married. If you have any troubles, you must always tell them to me....' Nearly every letter included architectural sketches or delightful, hirsute caricatures that are both sweet and self-deprecating, a far cry from Lessard's dark spirit.

The Empress is a dazzling reimagining of the courtship between one of history's most iconic and beloved couples: Sisi and Franz of Austria. The year is 1853, and sixteen-year-old Elisabeth "Sisi" of Bavaria has been very clear: she will wait for the sweeping, head-over-heels kind of love the poets speak of, or she will have no love at all. It is not her fault Mother refuses to listen. After all, just because her older sister Helene has chosen the line of duty, and is preparing to marry Emperor Franz of Austria, does not mean Sisi also needs to subject herself to such a passionless, regimented existence. Sisi knows there is more to life than corsets, luncheons, and woefully unfashionable dukes . . . if only someone would give her the chance to experience it firsthand.Meanwhile, in Austria, the Emperor is recovering from an assassination attempt that left him wounded and scared. In a bid to keep the peace, Franz has recommitted himself to his imperial duties-and promised to romance the pliant Bavarian princess, Helene, at his upcoming birthday celebration. How better to unite the country than with the announcement of a new Empress? But when Sisi and Franz meet unexpectedly in the palace gardens, away from the prying eyes and relentless critique of their families, their connection cannot be denied. And as their illicit conversations turn into something more, they must soon choose between the expectations of the court, and the burning desires of their hearts . . .Epic, captivating, and deliciously steamy, The Empress is a remarkably contemporary tale of falling in love and finding one's voice. To the fans of Bridgerton, The Crown, Sarah MacClean, and Lisa Kleypas: this one is for you.

"For me there could have been no better subject, no better poetic model, than Snegurochka, the shepherd Lel and Lovely Spring: for me there could be nothing more beautiful than the realm of the strange Tsar Berendey, and no lovelier religion than that of sun worship. Motifs, themes, chord sequences occurred to me even while reading, and soon, at first vaguely and then more clearly, the moods and colours of the individual elements of the action came to mind. I sat down in front of a pile of music paper and began to write everything down in the form of sketches." Rimsky-KorsakovRimsky-Korsakov's opera from 1880--1, The Snow Maiden (or Snegurochka), was the composer's favourite work, detailing the story of the conflicted young maiden who has inherited from her mother a longing for love, and, from her father, an incapacity for it. The opera demonstrates use of leit-motif, capturing the magic of King Frost and the Spring Fairy and the folk-infused style of the people of Tsar Benderey's realm.Other information:- The success of the Rimsky-Korsakov Edition on Brilliant Classics (BC 94369, 25-CD set) was largely due to the inclusion of several of Rimsky-Korsakov's operas, neglected master works in grand romantic style.- As in many of his other operas Rimsky based Snow Maiden on a Russian legend, this time that of Snegourotchka, in which the forces of nature are characterized as persons, interacting with real people and mythological beings, each having their own 'Leitmotiv'.- Beautiful, powerful and idiomatic performance from Sofia, Bulgaria, a gem from the former Balkanton catalogue.- Booklet contains notes on the work and a synopsis...
