The world first publication of a previously unknown work of fantasy by J.R.R. Tolkien, which tells the powerful story of a doomed young man who is sold into slavery and who swears revenge on the magician who killed his father.Kullervo son of Kalervo is perhaps the darkest and most tragic of all J.R.R. Tolkien?s characters. ?Hapless Kullervo?, as Tolkien called him, is a luckless orphan boy with supernatural powers and a tragic destiny.Brought up in the homestead of the dark magician Untamo, who killed his father, kidnapped his mother, and who tries three times to kill him when still a boy, Kullervo is alone save for the love of his twin sister, Wanona, and guarded by the magical powers of the black dog, Musti. When Kullervo is sold into slavery he swears revenge on the magician, but he will learn that even at the point of vengeance there is no escape from the cruellest of fates.Tolkien wrote that The Story of Kullervo was ?the germ of my attempt to write legends of my own?, and was ?a major matter in the legends of the First Age?; his Kullervo was the ancestor of Túrin Turambar, tragic incestuous hero of The Silmarillion. In addition to being a powerful story in its own right, The Story of Kullervo ? published here for the first time with the author?s drafts, notes and lecture-essays on its source-work, The Kalevala, is a foundation stone in the structure of Tolkien?s invented world.

Telemann: Ino Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

Of all the composers who witnessed the widespread blossoming of the arts in the middle of the 18th century, it was Georg Philipp Telemann who responded the most enthusiastically to each new phase of musical development. In his last works in particular he expressed the deeper sentiment of his musicalpersonality and encapsulated the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment. His large-scale cantata Ino (c.1765)was probably composed for performance in a new heated concert hall in Hamburg. Telemann greatlyadmired the achievements of a new generation of talented German writers and poets, and the author ofthe cantata text, Carl Wilhelm Ramler (1725--1798) had attracted his attention several years earlier. Ramlerwas a poet and professor of philosophy at the Berlin Military Academy, and his writing reflected the spiritualideals and literary aesthetics of the Enlightenment. Ramler's Ino tells the story of Ino's desperate attemptto save her son from her husband Athamas, who has been driven insane and is intent on killing him. Withits perfect blend of drama and poetry, narration and reflection, and emotion and structural control, it was the finest secular text that Telemann set to music. The Ino cantata is a virtually unbroken progression ofaccompanied recitative, arioso, aria and instrumental commentary and, with its two large-scale da capoarias, it has the proportions of a grand, throughcomposed operatic scena. The accompanied recitatives are the most striking example of Telemann's extraordinarily expressive word-painting. The harmonic and melodic language of Ino are typical of its time, characterised by pedal points and smoothly flowing movement in thirds and sixths in much of the instrumental writing, and harmonic structures which point clearly to a new age with a broader sense of harmonic planning. This recording also includes Telemann's sevenmovement Orchestral Suite in D. Composed in the same year as he completed Ino, it was his lastpreserved instrumental work. The exceptionally charming and witty music is a permanent testament to the way in which Telemann transformed conventional Baroque structures through rococo style and sentiment.Further information- Recorded in 1989- Booklet notes and sung textsConductor: Reinhard GoebelSoprano: Barbara SchlickOrchestra: Musica Antiqua Köln

Borodin Prince Igor brilliant classics

Książki naukowe>Sztuka>Muzyka, śpiew i taniec>Muzyka poważna

The composition of Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor -- based on the Song of Igor, a 12th-century Russian epic -- got off to a slow start, with the composer's career as an organic chemist preventing him from making much progress . Eventually his friends tricked him into composing certain parts of the work by inserting these numbers into a concert programme; later still, another friend, the celebrated Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, suggested making the opera a joint venture, putting himself at Borodin's disposal as a musical secretary as well as orchestrating and composing several extracts. Yet the opera remained incomplete at Borodin's death in 1887, and it was left to Rimsky-Korsakov and the young Alexander Glazunov to construct and finalise the work, premiering it in St Petersburg in 1890 to rave reviews.Central to the opera is the way in which the Russians are distinguished from the Polovtsians through melodic characterisation: while Borodin uses features of Russian folk music to represent his compatriots, chromaticism, melismas and appoggiaturas -- among other techniques -- represent their 'heathen' opponents. These methods were already established ways of portraying Orientalism in Russian music, with the opera intended, in part, to be an homage to Mikhail Glinka, 'the father of Russian music'.The Sofia National Opera Chorus has garnered acclaim the world over, and here it is accompanied by the Sofia Festival Orchestra, which has performed throughout Europe as well as further afield with distinguished soloists such as Nicolai Gedda and Mirella Freni, to name but a few. The recording also boasts a wealth of celebrated vocalists, including Boris Martinovich and Stefka Evstatieva.Other information:Recorded 14--20 July 1987, Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture, Sofia.Contains extensive liner notes on the work and plot synopsis.Reissue of one of the best loved and most "Russian" romantic operas: Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, a Sony Classical recording long time not available.Excellent performance by Bulgarian forces, starring Nikolai Ghiaurov and Nicola Ghiuselev, the magnificent choir of the Sofia National Opera (one of the best choirs of Europe) conducted by the lamented Emil Tchakarov, a great talent and favourite of Herbert von Karajan....

'I daresay I shall get through my trouble somehow.' Esther Waters is a young, working-class woman with strong religious beliefs who takes a position as a kitchen-maid at a horse-racing estate. She is seduced and abandoned, and forced to support herself and her illegitimate child in any way that she can. The novel depicts with extraordinary candour Esther's struggles against prejudice and injustice, and the growth of her character as she determines to protect her son. Her moving story is set against the backdrop of a world of horse racing, betting, and public houses, whose vivid depiction led James Joyce to call Esther Waters 'the best novel of modern English life'. Controversial and influential on its first appearance in 1894, the book opened up a new direction for the English realist tradition. Unflinching in its depiction of the dark and sordid side of Victorian culture, it remains one of the great novels of London life and labour in the 1890s. MARAIS: PIECES DE VIOLE, BOOK V Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

It is surprising that so little is known about Marin Marais today, as he could be considered one of the most important French composers of the Baroque period. Born in 1656, the son of a shoemaker, Marais spent his entire life in Paris. His musical career began when he joined the choir of the Sainte-Chapelle, but when his voice broken he decided to learn the viol, studying with the renowned bass viol player Sainte-Colombe, who had a profound influence on the young Marais. Marais went on to enter the royal orchestra and the orchestra of the Académie Royale de musique, where he performed and studied composing under Jean-Baptiste Lully. He was hailed as the greatest bass viol player of his time, and is said to have played the viol 'like an angel'.Marais's vast output for the viol (over 800 pieces!) is astonishingly varied, original and affecting ? no other composer has written so many works of such high quality for the instrument. The fifth and final book of Pieces de viole showcases Marais's art at its most mature and sophisticated, and includes a wider range of musical forms and techniques than the previous four books. Although the fifth book contains many of the conventional dance forms that listeners would expect to hear in a Baroque suite, there are many remarkable descriptive pieces that justify the claim that Marais was the first composer of programme music. A particularly striking example is the ?Tableau de l'Opération de la Taille? from the final Suite: an extraordinarily detailed musical depiction of an operation to remove a gall stone that the composer underwent! These captivating suites are brought to life in vivid performances by acclaimed chamber musicians and early music specialists Rainer Zipperling, Ghislaine Wauters and Pieter-Jan Belder.Other information:- Recorded in 2013.- Little is known of the life of Marin Marais, but he is unquestionably one of the most important and original composers of the French Baroque. His public ?breakthrough? came with the blockbuster film ?Tous les matins du monde?, which features his beautiful works for the viol.- Marais left a vast output of suites for the viol, the viola da gamba, in total 5 books. This new recording presents the 5th book, the most daring and original of all. In these suites of dance forms he introduces the first known examples of ?program music?, music depicting non-musical ideas or events. One suite for instance describes an operation to remove a gall stone, which includes the binding of the patient and his painful screaming!- Excellent performances by one of the best known viola da gamba players of the moment, Rainer Zipperling, seconded by harpsichord veteran Pieter-Jan Belder.- Includes booklet notes and biographies of the artists.

From the author of "North and South" and "Mary Barton", Elizabeth Gaskell's "Cranford" is a standalone publication of Elizabeth Gaskell's best-known work, with a critical introduction by Patricia Ingham in "Penguin Classics". "Cranford" depicts the lives and preoccupations of the inhabitants of a small village - their petty snobberies, appetite for gossip, and loyal support for each other in times of need. This is a community that runs on cooperation and gossip, at the very heart of which are the daughters of the former rector: Miss Deborah Jenkyns and her sister Miss Matty. But domestic peace is constantly threatened in the form of financial disaster, imagined burglaries, tragic accidents, and the reapparance of long-lost relatives. To Lady Glenmire, who shocks everyone by marrying the doctor. When men do appear, such as 'modern' Captain Brown or Matty's suitor from the past, they bring disruption and excitement to the everyday life of Cranford. In her introduction, Patricia Ingham places the novel in its literary and historical context, and discusses the theme of female friendship and Gaskell's narrative technique. This edition also contains an account of Gaskell's childhood in Knutsford, on which "Cranford" is based, appendices on fashion and domestic duties supplemented by illustrations, a chronology of Gaskell's life and works, suggestions for further reading, and explanatory notes. Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-65) was born in London, but grew up in the north of England in the village of Knutsford. In 1832 she married the Reverend William Gaskell and had four daughters, and one son who died in infancy. Her first novel, "Mary Barton", was published in 1848, winning the attention of Charles Dickens, and most of her later work was published in his journals. She was also a lifelong friend of Charlotte Bronte, whose biography she wrote. If you enjoyed "Cranford", you may like Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park", also available in "Penguin Classics".

The Rape of the Lock and Other Major Writings Penguin Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"The Rape of the Lock and Other Major Writings" is a collection of Alexander Pope's greatest works, edited with an introduction by Leo Damrosch in "Penguin Classics". Alexander Pope was the greatest English poet of his age, whose acerbic insights into human nature have entered the language, and whose verse still astonishes with its energy and inventiveness centuries after his death. This new selection of Pope's work follows the path of his poetic genius over his lifetime. It contains early poems including the masterly mock-epic "The Rape of the Lock", which satirizes a notorious society scandal through glorious heroic couplets, the brilliantly aphoristic "An Essay on Criticism" and excerpts from his translation of the "Iliad". Later poems represented include Pope's ironic adaptations of Horace's "Epistles", "Satires" and "Odes", and the remarkable "Dunciad", a stinging attack on his literary rivals and the mediocrity of Grub Street hacks. Here too are selected prose works and letters from Pope to his contemporaries such as John Gay and Jonathan Swift. This edition contains a wide-ranging introduction that elucidates Pope's life, poetic art and contemporary contexts, as well as separate introductions to each piece, a chronology, further reading, a biography and extensive notes. Alexander Pope (1688-1744) was born in London in 1688, the son of a well-to-do Roman Catholic cloth merchant. In 1709 he launched his career with a set of four pastorals, followed by "An Essay on Criticism", "Windsor Forest" and the mock-epic "Rape of the Lock", which cemented his reputation as the greatest poet of the age. Later works included the "Dunciad", "Epistles to Several Persons" and the ambitious "Essay on Man". If you enjoyed "The Rape of the Lock", you might like Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", also available in "Penguin Classics".

Faulkner was a master of the short story. Most of the pieces in this collection are drawn from the greatest period in his writing life, the fifteen or so years beginning in 1929, when he published "The Sound and the Fury." They explore many of the themes found in the novels and feature characters of small-town Mississippi life that are uniquely Faulkner's. In "A Rose for Emily," the first of his stories to appear in a national magazine, a straightforward, neighborly narrator relates a tale of love, betrayal, and murder. The vicious family of the Snopes trilogy turns up in "Barn Burning," about a son's response to the activities of his arsonist father. And Jason and Caddy Compson, two other inhabitants of Faulkner's mythical Yoknapatawpha County, are witnesses to the terror of the pregnant black laundress in "That Evening Sun." These and the other stories gathered here attest to the fact that Faulkner is, as Ralph Emerson so aptly notes, "the greatest artist the South has produced."

'Frank has but one duty before him. He must marry money.' The squire of Greshamsbury has fallen on hard times, and it is incumbent on his son Frank to make a good marriage. But Frank loves the doctor's niece, Mary Thorne, a girl with no money and mysterious parentage. He faces a terrible dilemma: should he save the estate, or marry the girl he loves? Mary, too, has to battle her feelings, knowing that marrying Frank would ruin his family and fly in the face of his mother's opposition. Her pride is matched by that of her uncle, Dr Thorne, who has to decide whether to reveal a secret that would resolve Frank's difficulty, or to uphold the innate merits of his own family heritage. The character of Dr Thorne reflects Trollope's own contradictory feelings about the value of tradition and the need for change. His subtle portrayal, and the comic skill and gentle satire with which the story is developed, are among the many pleasures of this delightful novel. The first of Chekhov's works to be published in a serious literary journal, 'The Steppe', with its masterly account of a spectacular thunderstorm, signifies his maturation as a writer of short stories. While the majority of his tales focus on the privileged classes, this selection shows that Chekhov never forgot his origins as the son of a failed provincial grocer, and characters as varied as the brutal soldier in 'Gusev', the downtrodden old constable in 'On Official Business', and the bemused peasants in 'New Villa' testify to the power and flexibility of his art. Bruckner: Complete symphonies Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

Born in the tiny village of Ansfelden, near Linz, Anton Bruckner -- the son and grandson of village teachers -- is today considered one of the most innovatory figures of the late 19th century. The composer is primarily remembered for his symphonies, monumental works that represent the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism and which are given first-rate performances in this much-lauded recording of the cycle. The collection also includes Bruckner's Symphony No.0 -- a work that is something of a phenomenon in music history, given that it was never assigned a number by its composer. Due to Bruckner's evident unhappiness with the piece and its subsequent exclusion from the cycle, the work is rarely performed, but nevertheless its rich harmonic language and polyphonic character are wholly characteristic of the composer's symphonic style -- one which increases in length as the cycle progresses. The influence of Wagner, Bruckner's idol who he worshipped with an almost neurotic obsession, permeates throughout -- there are echoes of Siegfried and Parsifal among other operas -- and then of course there are the Adagios: sublime, timeless works of art in their own right.Joining the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski (Symphony No.0) is the acclaimed Staatskapelle Dresden, directed by eminent German conductor Eugen Jochum. '... The set is a document of considerable worth. Jochum's dedication to Bruckner's music throughout a long and distinguished career has been exemplary; he loves the music deeply and communicates that love with fervour.' GramophoneOther information:- The complete Bruckner symphonies (including "Die Nullte") , the classic and authorative recording of the glorious Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Bruckner veteran Eugen Jochum, never having lost any of its grandeur, lucidity and spirituality.- Extensive liner notes on each symphony in the booklet.
