At Deverill Hall, an idyllic Tudor manor in the picture-perfect village of King's Deverill, impostors are in the air. The prime example is man-about-town Bertie Wooster, doing a good turn to Gussie Fink-Nottle by impersonating him while he enjoys fourteen days away from society after being caught taking an unscheduled dip in the fountains of Trafalgar Square. Bertie is of course one of nature's gentlemen, but the stakes are high: if all is revealed, there's a danger that Gussie's simpering fiancee Madeline may turn her wide eyes on Bertie instead. It's a brilliant plan - until Gussie himself turns up, imitating Bertram Wooster. After that, only the massive brain of Jeeves (himself in disguise) can set things right.

The lessons of Henry Ford, one of America's greatest business innovators, are as fresh and vital today as they were in 1922, when this extraordinary book was first published. Though the title suggests the autobiographical, this is in fact a bible of business philosophy from the man many considered "insane" for the very innovations we hail as visionary today: the assembly line, reduced working hours, a minimum wage, the five-day work week.Ford explains:. how his experiences as an employee influenced his philosophies as an employer. why saving money isn't always a good thing. the absolute worst time to approach a bank for a loan. why lowering prices below production costs can be a smart move. and much more. It's easy to see that much of Ford's wisdom has been forgotten today-and that individual entrepreneurs and global corporations alike would do well to take another look.American entrepreneur, inventor, and philanthropist HENRY FORD (1863-1947) was born in Michigan and trained as a machinist and engineer before founding, in 1903, the Ford Motor Company.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER When did America give up on fairness? The author of Fantasyland tells the epic history of how America decided that big business gets whatever it wants, only the rich get richer, and nothing should ever change and charts a way back to the future. The one book everyone must read as we figure out how to rebuild our country. Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs and Leonardo da VinciDuring the twentieth century, America managed to make its economic and social systems both more and more fair and more and more prosperous. A huge, secure, and contented middle class emerged. All boats rose together. But then the New Deal gave way to the Raw Deal. Beginning in the early 1970s, by means of a long war conceived of and executed by a confederacy of big business CEOs, the superrich, and right-wing zealots, the rules and norms that made the American middle class possible were undermined and dismantled. The clock was turned back on a century of economic progress, making greed good, workers powerless, and the market all-powerful while weaponizing nostalgia, lifting up an oligarchy that served only its own interests, and leaving the huge majority of Americans with dwindling economic prospects and hope. Why and how did America take such a wrong turn? In this deeply researched and brilliantly woven cultural, economic, and political chronicle, Kurt Andersen offers a fresh, provocative, and eye-opening history of America s undoing, naming names, showing receipts, and unsparingly assigning blame to the radical right in economics and the law, the high priests of high finance, a complacent and complicit Establishment, and liberal useful idiots, among whom he includes himself.Only a writer with Andersen s crackling energy, deep insight, and ability to connect disparate dots and see complex systems with clarity could make such a book both intellectually formidable and vastly entertaining. And only a writer of Andersen s vision could reckon with our current high-stakes inflection point, and show the way out of this man-made disaster.

Twenty-four Hour Mind Oxford University Press Inc
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
In January of 1999, an otherwise nonviolent man under great stress at work brutally murdered his wife in their backyard. He then went back to bed, awakening only when police entered his home. He claimed to have no memory of the event because, while his body was awake at the time, his mind was not. He had been sleepwalking. In The Twenty-four Hour Mind, sleep scientist Rosalind Cartwright brings together decades of research into the bizarre sleep disorders known as parasomnias to propose a new theory of how the human mind works consistently throughout waking and sleeping hours. Thanks to increasingly sophisticated EEG and brain imaging technologies, we now know that our minds do not simply "turn off" during sleep. Rather, they continue to be active, and research has indicated that one of the primary purposes of sleep is to aid in regulating emotions and processing experiences that occur during preceding waking hours. As such, when sleep is neurologically or genetically impaired or just too short, the processes that good sleep facilitates-those that usually have a positive effect on our mood and performance-can short circuit, with negative results that occasionally reach tragic proportions. Examining the interactions between conscious and unconscious forms of thinking as they proceed throughout the cycles of sleeping, dreaming, and waking, Cartwright demystifies the inner workings of the human mind that trigger sleep problems, how researchers are working to control them, and how they can apply what they learn to further our understanding of the brain. Along the way, she provides a lively account of the history of sleep research and the birth of sleep medicine that will initiate readers into this fascinating field of inquiry and the far-reaching implications it will have on the future of neuroscience. The Twenty-four Hour Mind offers a unique look at a relatively new area of study that will be of interest to those with and without sleep problems, as well as anyone captivated by the mysteries of the brain-and what sleep continues to teach us about the waking mind.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." So begins "Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's witty comedy of manners--one of the most popular novels of all time--that features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues. Renowned literary critic and historian George Saintsbury in 1894 declared it the "most perfect, the most characteristic, the most eminently quintessential of its author's works," and Eudora Welty in the twentieth century described it as "irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be."

James Fenimore Cooper Read Books

JAMES FENIMORE COOPER BY MARY E. PHILLIPS PREFACE HE intention of this simply told personal life of James Fenimore Cooper, the creator of American romance, is to have all material au thentic. The pictures of men, women, places and things are, as nearly as possible, of Coopers association with them to reproduce a background of his time and to make the man not the author its central foreground figure. From every available source since the earliest mention of the authors name, both in print and out, material for these pages has been collected. In this wide gleaning in the field of letters a rich harvest from able and brilliant pens the gleaner hereby expresses grateful appreciation of these transplanted values. Much, precious in worth and attractive in interest, comes into these pages from the generous and good among the relatives, friends, and admirers of Fenimore Cooper. And more than all others, the authors grandnephew, the late Mr. George Pomeroy Keese, of Cooperstown, New York, has paid rich and rare tribute to the memory of his uncle, with whom when a boy he came in living touch. Appeals to Coopers grandson, James Fenimore Cooper, Esq., of Albany, New York, and also to his publishers have been met in a spirit so gracious and their giving has been so generous as to command the grateful service of the writer. For rare values, in service and material, special credits are due to Mr. George Pomeroy Keese, Cooperstown, N. Y. James Fenimore Cooper, Esq., Albany, N. Y. Mr. Francis Whiting Hal sey, New York City Mr. Edwin Tenney Stiger, Watertown, Mass. General James Grant Wilson, New York City Mr. Horace G. Wadlin, Libra rian, Messrs. Otto Fleischner, Assistant Librarian, O. A. Bierstadt, F. C. Blaisdell, and others, of the Boston Public Library Miss Alice Bailey Keese, Cooperstown, N. Y. Mrs. T. Henry Dewey, Paris, France Mrs. Edward Emerson Waters, New York City and Miss Mary C. Sheridan, Boston, Mass. A LIFE of Cooper, written with some particular reference to the picturesque village among the Otsego hills, where he so long lived and in whose soil he, for some sixty years or more, has slept, has long been needed. That such a book should have become a labor of love in the hands of Miss Phillips is not more interesting than it is fortunate that the task should have been accom plished so conspicuously well. Miss Phillips has borne testimony to the resourcefulness and rare devotion with which the late Mr. Keese assisted her in researches extending over many years. None knew so well as he the personal side of Coopers whole life story none so assiduously and so lovingly, during a long life spent in Cooperstown, gathered and tried to preserve in their integrity every significant and interesting detail of it. The turning point in Coopers life was reached when he went to Cooperstown, although he wasris, France Mrs. Edward Emerson little more than a child in arms. Most curious is it that his going should have resulted from the foreclosure of a mortgage. This mortgage had been given in the late Colonial period by George Croghan, and covered a vast tract of native forest lands in Otsego. In these lands, through the foreclosure, Coopers father, soon after the Revolution, acquired a large interest, which led him to abandon his home of ease and refinement in Burlington, New Jersey, and found a new, and, as it proved to be, a permanent one in the unpeopled wilderness at the foot of Otsego Lake. Except for this accident of for tune, Leatherstocking and his companions of the forest never could have been created by the pen of Cooper.

Complete Stories Farrar, Straus & Giroux Inc

Winner of the National Book Award The publication of this extraordinary volume firmly established Flannery O'Connor's monumental contribution to American fiction. There are thirty-one stories here in all, including twelve that do not appear in the only two story collections O'Connor put together in her short lifetime--"Everything That Rises Must Converge "and "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." O'Connor published her first story, "The Geranium," in 1946, while she was working on her master's degree at the University of Iowa. Arranged chronologically, this collection shows that her last story, "Judgement Day"--sent to her publisher shortly before her death--is a brilliantly rewritten and transfigured version of "The Geranium." Taken together, these stories reveal a lively, penetrating talent that has given us some of the most powerful and disturbing fiction of the twentieth century. Also included is an introduction by O'Connor's longtime editor and friend, Robert Giroux.

Conversing with Paradise Sophia Perennis et Universalis
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
At a time when poetry has little regard for anything beyond the commonplace realities of everyday perception and sentiment, these studies propose a restoration of balance as between outer and inner worlds. For too long, in the wake of our attempt at a rational, scientific civilization, it has been readily assumed that the centre of gravity of reality and truth falls within the realm of the physical world. But for the poets discussed in these pages the opposite is the case. For them the centre of gravity of the Real and the True decidedly falls within the spiritual world, the 'other', 'hidden' domain which has immemorially been the source of enduring values and meanings. So, in the nature of things, it must remain. It is not a question of making a case for these poets as being inspired mystics or visionaries (though they are hardly without inspiration and vision). It is more a question of discerning to what extent they participate imaginatively in the realities of Spirit made comprehensible by the revealed traditions. We do not turn to poets for the formulation of doctrine and principle, but we might yet find in their work resonances of the True in the beauties of measured speech and how we are even now among intimations of the abiding good in the human condition. What these poets have in common is that they invoke an image of man as being only fully human insofar as he can attach himself to realities which transcend the human state as such.It is part of the contention of these pages that, if the imaginative vision of these poets belongs to an outmoded cultural phrase, if they are perceived to be trafficking in a knowledge that has been superseded, then it follows that most of the culture of the past must now the jettisoned as one would any obsolete junk. Spiritually, the reckoning is that decisive. Now that the ruins of a failed, secular culture are everywhere evident, the imaginative vision of these poets can renew and refresh our perception of the human vocation.-from the Preface
