Letters to a Sister Bloomsbury Reader

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The letters in this volume were written by Rose Macaulay to her younger sister, Jean, between 1926 and her death in 1958. These were the years when she was at the height of her powers and when her reputation was spreading beyond the more limited circles which had appreciated her earlier novels. She had found in broadcasting a new medium of self-expression, she was contributing articles to the daily and weekly press, and in the literary world of those years she had become an established figure, admired, enjoyed and, by some, feared. At the same time she reacted strongly and with characteristic individuality to the political events that over-shadowed the world. All this is recorded in the correspondence with her sister who, in complete contrast, was immersed in a life of devoted personal service as a district nurse. Hence these letters to her are more than a family document, they are a commentary on her daily life and an illumination of the wider world from which her sister was inevitably separated. They display a quality of spontaneity, a mixture of deep feelings, pungency and wit, and above all they convey to the reader the feeling that he is listening to her vivid conversation.

Dear Boys Univ Pr of Mississippi

Dear Boys: World War II Letters from a Woman Back Home by Mrs. Keith Frazier Somerville edited by Judy Barrett Litoff and David C. Smith Throughout the war years of the 1940s there were enormous outpourings of correspondence from all parts of the United States to men and women in the service. Among these were local news columns written in the form of letters to soldiers. With a mission of sustaining morale as well as insuring that young Americans stationed far away were informed of local events, the "Dear Boys" column from the Mississippi Delta is a shining example of this genre. Dear Boys collects memorable columns written by Mrs. Keith Frazier Somerville (1888-1978) for the newspaper of Bolivar County, Mississippi. Filled with illuminating insights and anecdotes, these poignant letters provide a fascinating look at life in the Mississippi Delta during wartime and at what happened to local citizens scattered over the "four corners of the world." Keith Frazier Somerville, a remarkable writer, gave breadth and depth to many significant, wide-reaching topics in addition to reporting entertaining tidbits of local news. She describes the important role played by women in the winning of the war. She offers commentary upon race relations, an uncommon subject in wartime America, especially in the Deep South. She apprises her readers of the fact of Nazi atrocities against Jews, though many governmental figures shied from this subject in their public pronouncements. With her clear view and her fair mind she expressed pride in the multi-ethnic and multi-faith composition of her local county, and she hoped that a positive influence of the war would be greater personal and social equality at home. Keith Frazier Somerville, daughter of U. S. Senator James Beriah Frazier of Tennessee, was a teacher in Cleveland, Mississippi. Her "Dear Boys" column was published in her hometown newspaper, The Bolivar Commercial. Judy Barrett Litoff is a professor of history at Bryant College. David C. Smith is a professor of history at the University of Maine.

Opis - Wydanie 2012r. Oprawa broszurowa. Strony 284. Format 14,5x20,5cm. Zaledwie kilka chwil wystarcza, by wciągnięty w wir agresji uruchomił serię wydarzeń, podczas których pozna samego siebie, doświadczy poczucia winy i odrzucenia. Nazwa - Mężczyzna z lasu. Selected Writings 1931-1934 part 2 vol 2 Harvard University Press

Powieści i opowiadania

In the frenzied final years of the Weimar Republic, amid economic collapse and mounting political catastrophe, Walter Benjamin emerged as the most original practicing literary critic and public intellectual in the German-speaking world. Volume 2 of the Selected Writings is now available in paperback in two parts. In Part 1, Benjamin is represented by two of his greatest literary essays, "Surrealism" and "On the Image of Proust," as well as by a long article on Goethe and a generous selection of his wide-ranging commentary for Weimar Germany's newspapers. Part 2 contains, in addition to the important longer essays, "Franz Kafka," "Karl Kraus," and "The Author as Producer," the extended autobiographical meditation "A Berlin Chronicle," and extended discussions of the history of photography and the social situation of the French writer, previously untranslated shorter pieces on such subjects as language and memory, theological criticism and literary history, astrology and the newspaper, and on such influential figures as Paul Valery, Stefan George, Hitler, and Mickey Mouse. [Praise for the one-volume hardcover edition] For those who know only the small selection of essays and longer texts previously translated into English, this book may be a revelation. Selected Writings: Volume 2 spanning the period from his abandonment of academia and his emergence as an important literary journalist in 1927 to his near silencing after the Nazis seized power and his exile in 1934, shows the writer at his sparkling best.    --Paul Mattick, New York Times Book Review[Praise for the one-volume hardcover edition] The period from 1927 to 1934 spanned in this volume was for Walter Benjamin both grievous and fertile...The range of topics and perspectives is immense. It extends from considerations on kitsch and pornography to repeated encounters, personal or indirect, with Gide, Kierkegaard and surrealism. The cultural history of toys fascinates Benjamin as he records his own Berlin childhood. Insights into 'Left-Wing Melancholy' alternate with thoughts on Mickey Mouse, on Chaplin, and on graphology.    --George Steiner, The ObserverThis awesome 800-page collection demonstrates that Benjamin was able to pack more thought into the years 1931

Source: Wikipedia. Commentary (music and lyrics not included). Pages: 23. Chapters: All by Myself, Hero (Mariah Carey song), Mama (Il Divo song), My Way (song), Nella Fantasia, Pour que tu m'aimes encore, The Power of Love (Frankie Goes to Hollywood song), The Time of Our Lives, Un-Break My Heart. Excerpt: "Hero" is a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. It was released on October 19, 1993 by Columbia Records as the second single from Carey's third studio album, Music Box (1993). Originally intended for Gloria Estefan, the song was written and produced by Carey and Walter Afanasieff. While writing the song, Carey did not connect to its style or sound, therefore forfeiting it over to the soundtrack of the film of the same name. However, after being convinced to keep it, she personalized it, giving it a more pop and R&B melody, as well as changing some of the lyrics to more precisely fit her personality. Lyrically, the song is regarded as one of Carey's most inspirational and personal ballads, with its protagonist declaring that even though we may feel discouraged or down at times, in reality we are "heroes" if we look inside ourselves and see our own inner strength; in time, it will help us "find the way". The song received mixed reviews by contemporary music critics for its lyrical content as well as Carey's vocal performance. Aside from its lyrics, "Hero" derived its hook and sound from several musical instruments such as the guitar, piano and organ. The song experienced strong success in several international markets, and also became Carey's eighth chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, it was ranked at number 11 on the Billboard Year-End Chart, and number 53 on the Decade-End Chart. Outside the United States, "Hero" enjoyed strong charting, reaching the top five in Canada, France, Ireland, New Zealand and Norway and the top ten in Australia and the United Kingdom. Due to its extended popularity, "Hero" was covered by the 2008 UK X Factor finalists and released as a single, topping the charts in Ireland the UK and becoming one of the biggest selling songs in British history. Due to fan requests and letters, as well as their connection to its personal meaning and content, the song remains one of Carey's most performed songs. Deemed by many a

Tchaikovsky and His World Princeton University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Tchaikovsky has long intrigued music-lovers as a figure who straddles many borders--between East and West, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, tradition and innovation, tenderness and bombast, masculine and feminine. In this book, through consideration of his music and biography, scholars from several disciplines explore the many sides of Tchaikovsky. The volume presents for the first time in English some of Tchaikovsky's own writings about music, as well as three influential articles, previously available only in German, from the 1993 Tubingen conference commemorating the centennial of Tchaikovsky's death. Tchaikovsky's distinguished biographer, Alexander Poznansky, reveals new findings from his most recent archival explorations in Kiln, Tchaikovsky's home. Poznansky makes accessible for the first time the full text of perviously censored letters, clarifying issues about the composer's life that until now have remained mere conjecture. Leon Botstein examines the world of realist art that was so influential in Tchaikovsky's day, while Janet Kennedy describes how interpretations of Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty act as a barometer of the aesthetic and even political climate of several generations. Natalia Minibayeva elucidates the First Orchestral Suite as a workshop for Tchaikovsky's composition of large-scale works, including symphony, opera, and ballet, while Susanne Dammann discusses the problematic Fourth Symphony as a work perfectly poised between East and West. Arkadii Klimovitsky considers Tchaikovsky's role as a link between Russia's Golden and Silver Ages. The extensive interaction between music and literature in this period forms the basis for Rosamund Bartlett's essay on creative parallels between Tchaikovsky and Chekhov. Richard Wortman describes the political climate at the end of Tchaikovsky's life, including Alexander III's mania for re-creating seventeenth-century Russian culture. Caryl Emerson, Kadja Gronke, and Leslie Kearney examine a number of issues raised by Tchaikovsky's operas. Marina Kostalevsky translates Nikolai Kashkin's 1899 review of Tchaikovsky's controversial opera Orleanskaia Deva (The Maid of Orleans). The book concludes with examples of theoretical writing by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, authors of Russia's first two systematic books on music theory. Lyle Neff translates and provides commentary on compositional issues that Tchaikovsky discusses in personal correspondence, as well as Rimsky-Korsakov's analysis of his own opera Snegurochka (The Snow Maiden). Tchaikovsky and His World will change how we understand the life, works, and intellectual milieu of one of the most important and beloved composers of the nineteenth century. Originally published in 1998. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
