A Different Kind of Power? International Debate Education Association

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A Different Kind of Power? brings together the most important contributions to the debate about the past, current and future role of the European Union (EU) in international politics. Its main organizing theme is the question of whether the EU acts as a normative rather than a traditional great power in its external relations. The volume is structured in five sections, which move from outlining the normative power debate to its assessment in different policy areas and in relation to other international actors:

Writing a Usable Past: Russian Literary Culture 1917-1937 Northwestern Univ Pr

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In the period between the Revolution and the purges of the 1930s, Russian literary culture underwent a profound split, divided between the emigre community and citizens of the new Soviet Union. Each faction sought to legitimize its claim to the nation's patrimony and hegemony. In the USSR this partly gave rise to socialist realism, yet many authors insisted literature fulfill aesthetic and historical as well as social functions. In Writing a Usable Past: Russian Literary Culture, 1917-1937, Angela Brintlinger provides a multifaceted examination of this conflict by looking at the competing claims laid to Pushkin and to his treatment in biographies (and attempted biographies) by three writers: Iurii Tynianov, Vladislav Khodasevich, and Mikhail Bulgakov. As the centenary of Pushkin's death approached, the great poet was elevated to the status of national hero and in the process politicized by the Soviets as a "people's poet". The emigre community launched a counterattack in its journals, newspapers, exhibits, and cultural organizations and held up Pushkin as a symbol of its faith in a "true" Russia and Russian culture.Brintlinger reveals how the biographers of this period took different approaches to Pushkin's life. Tynianov, a scholar turned novelist, used history to maximize the fictional events of his Pushkin novel; by contrast, Khodasevich, a poet turned scholar, was determined to remain true to historical fact. Bulgakov found the middle ground where history, biography, and fiction intersect. In pursuing the "truth" of Pushkin's life, each writer sought a so-called usable past -- usable for ends that served both political needs and personal, artistic, and intellectual expression.

Now Women Are Different - 2834702369

Now Women Are Different VDM Verlag Dr. Müller

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The term "empowerment" has become increasingly common in the past decades and been defined and used in different ways. This book analyzes the process of women's empowerment by taking a postmodern feminist approach to situate women's narratives and experience in the context of rural Cambodia. It provides a detailed analysis of a case study of the village, which has actively participated in agricultural extension work and setting up community based organizations. Women's participation in group activities contributed to improving agricultural practice and access to financial resources. The satisfaction lead to women's continuous engagement in such activities and women expressed their increase sense of self-worth. As a result, the community experienced improvements in women's status such as more women taking leadership role, appreciation to women's engagement in public, and decreased domestic violence. Both women and men describe such changes by challenging some old ideologies that restricted women's activities. This study shows that women's empowerment process can be conceptualized and possible to set a framework for assessing impacts of development activities.

Desired Past University of Chicago Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This text introduces Mary Hammon and Sara Norman, who were found guilty in 17th-century Massachusetts of "lewd behavior each with the other upon a bed". The reader also meets Ozaw-wen-dib, a male Chippewa who, in the 1820s, lived as a woman and had many husbands. We find Addie Brown, a freeborn black domestic servant, assuring African-American schoolteacher Rebecca Primus that "no kisses is like youres" in the 1860s. The reader also becomes acquainted with ACT-UP, Queer Nation and the "tasty and dramatic" Lesbian Avengers. The book, as these examples suggest, is the tale of men desiring men and women loving women through nearly four centuries of American history. Leila Rupp combines an array of scholarship on supposedly discrete episodes in American history into a story of same-sex desire across the country and the centuries. She shows what it means to say that sexuality has a history by pointing to experiences of love and desire that were understood in radically different ways across time, and often in radically different ways by different groups at the same time. She translates the concepts that are central to cutting-edge theories of sexuality into a narrative that explains these concepts in practice.

Sanitation, Latrines and Intestinal Parasites in Past Populations - 2842081001

Sanitation, Latrines and Intestinal Parasites in Past Populations Ashgate Publishing Limited

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Sanitation and intestinal health is something we often take for granted today. However, people living in many regions of the developing world still suffer with debilitating diseases due to the lack of sanitation. Despite its clear impact upon health in modern times, sanitation in past populations is a topic that has received surprisingly little attention. This book brings together key experts from around the world to explore fascinating aspects of life in the past relevant to sanitation, and how that affected our ancestors. By its end readers will realize that toilets were in use in ancient Mesopotamia even before the invention of writing, and that flushing toilets with anatomic seats were a technology of ancient Greece at the time of the minotaur myth. They will see how sanitation compared in ancient Rome and medieval London, and will take a virtual walk around the sanitation of York at the time of the Vikings. Readers will also understand which intestinal parasites infected humans in different regions of the world over different time periods, what these parasites tell us about early human evolution, later population migrations, past diet, lifestyle, and the effects of sanitation technology. There is good evidence that over the millennia people in the past realized that sanitation mattered. They invented toilets, cleaner water supplies, drains, waste disposal and sanitation legislation. While past views on sanitation were very different to those of today, it is clear than many past societies took sanitation much more seriously than was previously thought.

Our Faithfulness to the Past - 2836516041

123,43 zł

Our Faithfulness to the Past Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This volume brings together essays - three of them previously unpublished - on the epistemology, ethics, and politics of memory by the late feminist philosopher Sue Campbell. The essays in Part I diagnose contemporary skepticism about personal memory, and develop an account of good remembering that is better suited to contemporary (reconstructive) theories of memory. Campbell argues that being faithful to the past requires both accuracy and integrity, and is both an epistemic and an ethical achievement. The essays in Part II focus on the activities and practices through which we explore and negotiate the shared significance of our different recollections of the past, and the importance of sharing memory for constituting our identities. Views about self, identity, relation, and responsibility (all influenced by traditions in feminist philosophy) are examined through the lens of Campbell's relational conception of memory. She argues that remaining faithful to our past sometimes requires us to re-negotiate the boundaries between ourselves and the collectives to which we belong. In Part III, Campbell uses her relational theory of memory to address the challenges of sharing memory and renewing selves in contexts that are fractured by moral and political difference, especially those arising from a history of injustice and oppression. She engages in detail Canada's Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where survivor memories have the potential to illuminate the significance of the past for a shared future. The study of memory brings together philosophers, psychologists, historians, anthropologists, legal theorists, and political theorists and activists. Sue Campbell demonstrates a singular ability to put these many different areas of scholarship and activism into fruitful conversation with each other while also adding an original and powerful voice to the discussion.
