Grimms Complete Fairy Tales (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Grimms Complete Fairy Tales Long ago, when wishes often came true, there lived a King whose daughters were all handsome, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun himself, who has seen everything, was bemused every time he shone over her because of her beauty. Near the royal castle there was a great dark wood, and in the wood under an old linden tree was a well; and when the day was hot, the Kings daughter used to go forth into the wood and sit by the brink of the cool well, and if the time seemed long, she would take out a golden ball, and throw it up and catch it again, and this was her favorite pastime. Now it happened one day that the golden ball, instead of falling back into the maidens little hand which had sent it aloft, dropped to the ground near the edge of the well and rolled in. The King's daughter followed it with her eyes as it sank, but the well was deep, so deep that the bottom could not be seen. Then she began to weep, and she wept and wept as if she could never be comforted. And in the midst of her weeping she heard a voice saying to her, "What ails you. King's daughter? Your tears would melt a heart of stone." And when she looked to see where the voice came from, there was nothing but a frog stretching his thick ugly head out of the water. "Oh, is it you, old waddler?" said she; "I weep because my golden ball has fallen into the well." "Never mind, do not weep," answered the frog; "I can help you; but what will you give me if I fetch up your ball again?" "Whatever you like, dear frog," said she; "any of my clothes, my pearls and jewels, or even the golden crown that I wear." Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales Illustrated By Anne Anderson - P BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A wonderful collection of 11 of Hans Christian Andersen's most well-loved fairy tales illustrated by the charming colour plates and black and white line drawings of Anne Anderson. Stories Include: The Drop of Water; The Tinder Box; The Ugly Duckling; The Little Match-Girl; The Garden of Paradise; Little Tuk; The Little Mermaid; The Nightingale; The Marsh King's Daughter; Mother Elder; and The Daisy. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1850s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children. About the Author: Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children's stories but perhaps best known for his immortal Fairy Tales meant for both adults and children and frequently written in a colloquial style to veil their sophisticated moral teachings. He broke new ground in terms of style and content by using idioms and constructions of spoken language in a way that had previously not been seen in Danish literature. His poetry and stories have been translated into over 150 languages, inspiring a wealth of films, plays and ballets. About the Illustrator: Anne Anderson (1874-c.1940) was a Scottish illustrator chiefly noted for her Art Nouveau children's book illustrations that display fluidity typical of the movement. Characteristic of her work are decorative and lightly drawn or painted illustrations of neatly dressed children, neatly dressed with pear-shaped faces. Anderson's work has been compared to that of Jessie M. King, a contemporary.

"The Orange Fairy Book", the tenth in Andrew Lang's "Coloured" Fairy Book series, was originally published in 1906. This edition contains all 33 of the original stories and all 58 of the original illustrations. *** The collections were specifically intended for children, and consequently edited for that end. *** When Andrew began publishing these books there were almost no English fairy tale books in circulation. Tolken and his Middle-Earth collection of novels. *** This book contains these stories: The Story of the Hero Makóma; The Magic Mirror; Story of the King Who Would See Paradise; How Isuro the Rabbit Tricked Gudu; Ian, the Soldier's Son; The Fox and the Wolf; How Ian Direach Got the Blue Falcon; The Ugly Duckling; The Two Caskets; The Goldsmith's Fortune; The Enchanted Wreath; The Foolish Weaver; The Clever Cat; The Story of Manus; Pinkel the Thief; The Adventures of a Jackal; The Adventures of the Jackal's Eldest Son; The Adventures of the Younger Son of the Jackal; The Three Treasures of the Giants; The Rover of the Plain; The White Doe; The Girl-Fish; The Owl and the Eagle; The Frog and the Lion Fairy; The Adventures of Covan the Brown Haired; The Princess Bella-Flor; The Bird of Truth; The Mink and the Wolf; Adventures of an Indian Brave; How the Stalos Were Tricked; Andras Baive; The White Slipper; and The Magic Book. * * * * Check out the other Andrew Lang books published by Flying Chipmunk Publishing at www.FlyingChipmunkPublishing.com, or Friend us on Facebook for our latest releases.

Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm Princeton University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezso. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold--heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique--they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Many years ago, there was an Emperor, who was so excessively fond of new clothes, that he spent all his money in dress. He did not trouble himself in the least about his soldiers; nor did he care to go either to the theatre or the chase, except for the opportunities then afforded him for displaying his new clothes. He had a different suit for each hour of the day; and as of any other king or emperor, one is accustomed to say, "he is sitting in council," it was always said of him, "The Emperor is sitting in his wardrobe." Time passed merrily in the large town which was his capital; strangers arrived every day at the court. One day, two rogues, calling themselves weavers, made their appearance. They gave out that they knew how to weave stuffs of the most beautiful colors and elaborate patterns, the clothes manufactured from which should have the wonderful property of remaining invisible to everyone who was unfit for the office he held, or who was extraordinarily simple in character.
