Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson (1850-1894), was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of Neo-romanticism in English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov. Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon. Stevenson was a celebrity in his own time, but with the rise of modern literature after World War I, he was seen for much of the 20th century as a writer of the second class, relegated to children's literature and horror genres. His works include: An Inland Voyage (1878), Familiar Studies of Men and Books (1882), New Arabian Nights (1882), Kidnapped (1886), The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables (1887), Memories and Portraits (1887), Memoir of Fleeming Jenkin (1887), The Black Arrow (1888), and Master of Ballantrae: A Winter's Tale (1889).

Anatomy of a South African Genocide Ohio University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In 1998 David Kruiper, the leader of the aKhomani San who today live in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, lamented, "We have been made into nothing." His comment applies equally to the fate of all the hunter-gatherer societies of the Cape Colony who were destroyed by the impact of European colonialism. Until relatively recently, the extermination of the Cape San people has been treated as little more than a footnote to South African narratives of colonial conquest. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Dutch-speaking pastoralists who infiltrated the Cape interior dispossessed its aboriginal inhabitants. In response to indigenous resistance, colonists formed mounted militia units known as commandos with the express purpose of destroying San bands. This ensured the virtual extinction of the Cape San people. In The Anatomy of a South African Genocide, Mohamed Adhikari examines the history of the San and persuasively presents the annihilation of Cape San society as genocide.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The life and times of the wealthiest man who ever lived - Jacob Fugger - the Renaissance banker who revolutionized the art of making money and established the radical idea of pursuing wealth for its own sake.§§Jacob Fugger lived in Germany at the turn of the sixteenth century, the grandson of a peasant. By the time he died, his fortune amounted to nearly two percent of European GDP. Not even John D. Rockefeller had that kind of wealth.§§Most people become rich by spotting opportunities, pioneering new technologies, or besting opponents in negotiations. Fugger did all that, but he had an extra quality that allowed him to rise even higher: nerve. In an era when kings had unlimited power, Fugger had the nerve to stare down heads of state and ask them to pay back their loans - with interest. It was this coolness and self-assurance, along with his inexhaustible ambition, that made him not only the richest man ever, but a force of history as well. Before Fugger came along it was illegal under church law to charge interest on loans, but he got the Pope to change that. He also helped trigger the Reformation and likely funded Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe. His creation of a news service, which gave him an information edge over his rivals and customers, earned Fugger a footnote in the history of journalism. And he took Austria's Habsburg family from being second-tier sovereigns to rulers of the first empire where the sun never set.§§The ultimate untold story, The Richest Man Who Ever Lived is more than a tale about the richest and most influential businessman of all time. It is a story about palace intrigue, knights in battle, family tragedy and triumph, and a violent clash between the 1 percent and everybody else. To understand our financial system and how we got it, it pays to understand Jacob Fugger.

Coleridge is such a celebrity that many who have never read "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" have a fair idea who he was, and yet the common impression of him is not flattering. He is typically seen as a youthful genius transformed by drugs and philosophy into a tedious sage. It is time for a change of image. "A Book I Value" offers a one-volume sampling of Coleridge's encyclopedic marginalia, revealing a figure more complex but also more humanly attractive - clever, curious, playful, intense - than the one we are used to. This book makes a convenient introduction to Coleridge's life, the intellectual issues and contemporary concerns that held his attention, and the workings of his mind. The marginalia represent an unintimidating sort of writing that Coleridge famously excelled at (often in books borrowed from friends). 'A book, I value', he wrote, 'I reason and quarrel with as with myself when I am reasoning'. Unlike the complete Marginalia in six volumes arranged alphabetically by author, this representative selection is chronological and footnote-free, with a contextualizing introduction and brief headnotes that outline Coleridge's circumstances year by year and provide essential historical information. Our own cultural taboo against writing in books is slackening in light of new interest in the history of the book. It will be weakened further by the extraordinary and now accessible example of Coleridge, who was a remarkably shrewd but at the same time a remarkably charitable reader.

From Autogiro to Gyroplane - 2826693632

From Autogiro to Gyroplane Greenwood Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Predating the invention of the helicopter by two decades, the Autogiro was the world's first rotary-wing aircraft. The helicopter had the advantageous ability to rise straight up, while the Autogiro/gyroplane could only taxi. Yet the gyroplane was safer and more stable; both aircraft should have had value in market. Why did the helicopter survive and prosper, while the Autogiro became a nearly forgotten historical footnote? Why didn't the Autogiro catch on, and why is it being revived today? This is the first book to tell the fascinating 80-year history of today's gyroplane and its antecedent, the Autogiro. Charnov explains that the near-eclipse of the Autogiro was caused by a potent combination of bad luck, the impact of the Great Depression and World War II, and egregious business decisions. Only by understanding the amazing manner in which this aviation technology has persisted and evolved can one fully understand the basis for its future. In contrast to the fate of the Autogiro, the gyroplane's unfolding story is characterized by successful business models, effective decision making, and the emergence of cutting-edge technology. The survival of the gyroplane may be a paradigm for the persistence of earlier, less complex technologies, and its future relies on grasping its colorful history.

Excerpt from Piers Gaveston: A Chapter of Early Constitutional History Three years ago, in looking up a reference to Piers Gaveston, the author was surprised to find so little available material relating to one who had been practically Dictator of England. Researches since made have encouraged him to think that some study of the career of this remarkable man may be of interest, and may perhaps even form what Stevenson called a "Footnote to History." The contemporary writers on the Reign of Edward II. make few references to Gaveston. Their genealogical records are scanty. Twenty-four hours after arriving in Dublin, Muhammad Ali rang his publicist Harold Conrad. "Hey, Hal?" said Ali, "where are all the niggers in this country?" "Ali," replied Conrad, "there aren't any." On July 19, 1972, it took Muhammad Ali 11 rounds to defeat Al 'Blue' Lewis at Croke Park, Dublin. A mere footnote in the larger Ali story, this fight against a game ex-convict from Detroit marked the culmination of an extraordinary week in Ireland's sporting and cultural history. From the moment the world's most charismatic athlete touched down at Dublin Airport and announced his maternal great-grandfather Abe Grady had emigrated from County Clare more than a century before, the country was in his thrall and, of course, being Ali - he loved it. It was to be a most extraordinary week for both him and the people he met. Ali was both charming and charmed by those who came to pay homage - among them, the then Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, civil rights campaigner Bernadette Devlin, oscar-winning director John Huston, actor Peter O'Toole and an old lady who invited him into her house for a cup of tea. Through interviews with dozens of those whose paths Ali crossed and many centrally involved in the planning and promotion of the event, Dave Hannigan has knitted together an enthralling narrative about one incredible boxer and the remarkable impact of his visit on the country of his ancestors.

Best Dutch Book Design 2005 Flying Lightness paints a heroic picture of a century of aircraft development against the background of steadily increasing travel speeds. Yet since the Wright brothers made their first brief flight over 100 years ago, aircraft construction seems to have become strangely stuck in a rut. Today, rapid advances in the field of composites are opening up new possibilities for optimizing aircraft con-figurations and revising structural principles. Composites are combinations of two or more physically distinct materials that enhance each other's properties. The new modes of system integration and improved structural quality they offer may even manage to produce a 30 per cent more efficient 'blended wing' passenger plane. Flying wings, once just a footnote in the history of air transport, could well become the aircraft of the 21st century.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Francesca Woodman (1958 - 1981) was an artist decisively of her time, yet her photographs retain an undeniable immediacy. Thirty years after her death, they continue to inspire a cultlike following of admirers, drawn by the work's dazzling ambiguities and remarkably rich explorations of self-portraiture and the human body in architectural space.§Woodman began photographing at he age of thirteen. By the time she enrolled by the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975, she was already an accomplished photographer with a singularly mature and focused approach to her work. At the age of twenty-two, she committed suicide. Woodman might be merely a tragic footnote in the history of photography were it not for the compelling, complex, and artistically resolved body of work she produced in just nine brilliant years. Woodman also left behind question that have preoccupied critics and scholars ever since: Was she a prodigy, arriving fully formed as a photographer at a very young age, or was she a student, in the early, experimental phase of a promising career? Was she a feminist, or does her investment in the female form signal something else entirely? And to what extent does her biography, cut short, bear relevance to her work?§§Produced in conjunction with the first major American exhibition of the artist's work in more than two decades, this catalogue is a landmark reconsideration of Woodman for the twenty-first century. Thoughtfully written and richly illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs, it provides a fresh overview of her achievement and reflects on why her pictures continue to be so profoundly affective long after their making.§§Exhibition:§San Francisco Museum of Modern Art§The Guggenheim Museum, New York

Even the most diehard baseball fans don't know the true story of William 'Blockade Billy' Blakely. He may have been the greatest player the game has ever seen, but today no one remembers his name. He was the first - and only - player to have his existence completely removed from the record books. Even his team is long forgotten, barely a footnote in the game's history. Every effort was made to erase any evidence that William Blakely played professional baseball, and with good reason. Blockade Billy had a secret darker than any pill or injection that might cause a scandal in sports today. His secret was much, much worse ...and only Stephen King, the most gifted storyteller of our age, can reveal the truth about the world, once and for all. The bonus story in MORALITY is a riveting short about Chad, an aspiring writer who is teaching in a school until he lands a publishing contract. His wife Nora is working as a home nurse for a retired minister. Like most people these days, they are struggling financially. And then Nora is approached by her employer with a proposition that could make their dream of a home in Vermont a reality. But will it be worth the moral consequences?
