"Vietnam's Forgotten Army: Heroism and Betrayal in the ARVN" chronicles the lives of Pham Van Dinh and Tran Ngoc Hue, two of the brightest young stars in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). Both men fought with valour in a war that seemed to have no end, exemplifying ARVN bravery and determination that is largely forgotten or ignored in the West. However, while Hue fought until he was captured by the North Vietnamese Army and then endured thirteen years of captivity, Dinh surrendered and defected to the enemy, for whom he served as a teacher in the reeducation of his former ARVN comrades. An understanding of how two lives that were so similar diverged so dramatically provides a lens through which to understand the ARVN and South Vietnam's complex relationship with Americas government and military. The lives of Dinh and Hue reflect the ARVNs battlefield successes, from the recapture of the Citadel in Hue City in the Tet Offensive of 1968, to Dinhs unheralded role in the seizure of Hamburger Hill a year later. However, their careers expose an ARVN that was over-politicized, tactically flawed, and dependent on American logistical and firepower support. Marginalized within an American war, ARVN faced a grim fate as U.S. forces began to exit the conflict. As the structure of the ARVN/U.S. alliance unravelled, Dinh and Hue were left alone to make the most difficult decisions of their lives. Andrew Wiest weaves historical analysis with a compelling narrative, culled from extensive interviews with Dinh, Hue, and other key figures. Once both military superstars, Dinh is viewed by a traitor by many within the South Vietnamese community, while Hue, an expatriate living in northern Virginia, is seen as a hero who never let go of his ideals. Their experiences and legacies mirror that of the ARVNs rise and fall as well as the tragic history of South Vietnam.

In 1779 a Philadelphia belle, Margaret Shippen, married a hero of the ongoing Revolution, General Benedict Arnold. Within months Peggy was sending coded messages to an old suitor from England, conveying Arnold's promise to defect. When their plot was discovered, the general fled. Peggy distracted George Washington with hysterics before following her husband. The British government eventually paid Peggy far more than Benedict Arnold ever received.A generation later, the Philadelphia neighborhood where Margaret Shippen had grown up was home to a businessman named James Forten. Due to his invention for rigging sails, Forten was rich enough to build large public halls and bankroll political causes. At the same time, this veteran of the Revolution was losing his political voice because he was black.Margaret Shippen Arnold and James Forten are just two of the fifteen fascinating but little-known lives told in Forgotten Americans. Weitten by an honored biographer and an award-winning poet, this entertaining book shines a light on overlooked figures. Traditional histories have often neglected these people, for many reasons. Some were on the losing side of a conflict, such as Tecumeseh, who spent years trying to unite Indian nations against white settlers. Others worked behind the scenes, like Annie Turner Wittenmyer, who took charge of supplying Union hospitals in the West during the Civil War. And some we disregard because their actions now seem unsavory, as with the once-celebrated "Indian-slayer" Tom Quick. From these fascinating threads, Will Randall and Nancy Nahra weave a rich tapestry of American life. In it we witness the power of religious revival and the lure of mass entertainment. We watch philosophical differences split the nation. We see the shift in Native American's lives from Teedyuscung, a Delaware murdered despite his conversion to Christianity, to Louis Sockalexis, the baseball prodigy. These lively stories also reveal little-known facets of the famous: Benjamin Franklin's disinherited son, Thomas Jefferson's secret politicking, and how Mary Todd Lincoln's confinement to a mental hospital became a public issue. From early settlements to the close of the nineteenth century, the brief biographies in Forgotten Americans engagingly fill out our knowledge of the nation's past.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Life of Gargantua and the Heroic Deeds of Pantagruel Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Life of Gargantua and the Heroic Deeds of Pantagruel: From the French of Rabelais François Rabelais, born in or before the year 1495, was the son of a rich innkeeper, who kept "The Lamprey," at Chinon, in the Touraine. The district about Chinon, familiar to Rabelais, was familiar also to Gargantua and Pantagruel. Rabelais was partly educated by the Benedictines at Sevillé, from among whom he passed to the Convent of La Basmette, and he joined afterwards the Order of the Franciscans at the Abbey of Fontenay-le-Comte. He was an eager worker, in whom the new life of the time stirred busily, who fastened upon the revived Greek studies with the fresh appetite of those who made the monks exclaim: "Beware of the Greeks, lest you become a heretic," and he had, as Erasmus had, a scholar's sympathy with the best hopes for man. As he grew in knowledge he grew also in wisdom; for his wit, his learning, and his kindliness had depths in them of the true wisdom that helps the world. Leaders of thought became his fastest friends. He saw from within the decay of the Religious Orders, that had been useful and honourable in their first intention; and he gave such offence to the brethren, at Fontenay-le-Comte, that he had to be rescued from the prison of his abbey by one of his strong friends from outside, the magistrate Tiraqueau, who was in authority at Fontenay. About the year 1524, Rabelais passed, with the permission of Pope Clement VII., into the Order of the Benedictines. Geoffrey d'Estissac, an old comrade of his at La Basmette, having become Bishop of Maillezais, gave him the title of Canon Regular in that small town of Poitou. The same bishop, having released him from seclusion in the monastery, took Rabelais into his own house as secretary and companion.
