Historia

Deportations by train were critical in the Nazis' genocidal vision of the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question." Historians have estimated that between 1941 and 1944 up to three million Jews were transported to their deaths in concentration and extermination camps. In his writings on the "Final Solution," Raul Hilberg pondered the role of trains: "How can railways be regarded as anything more than physical equipment that was used, when the time came, to transport the Jews from various cities to shooting grounds and gas chambers in Eastern Europe?" This book explores this question by analyzing the victims' experiences at each stage of forced relocation: the round-ups and departures from the ghettos, the captivity in trains, and finally, the arrival at the camps. Utilizing a variety of published memoirs and unpublished testimonies, the book argues victims experienced the train journeys as mobile chambers, comparable in importance to the more-studied fixed locations of persecution, such as ghettos and camps.

Opis - "The superb, funny, fascinating story of Lenin"s trans-European rail journey and how it shook the world" Simon Sebag Montefiore, Evening Standard, Books of the Year "Splendid ...a jewel among histories, taking a single episode from the penultimate year of the Great War, illuminating a continent, a revolution and a series of psychologies in a moment of cataclysm and doing it with wit, judgment and an eye for telling detail" David Aaronovitch, The Times By 1917 the European war seemed to be endless. Both sides in the fighting looked to new weapons, tactics and ideas to break a stalemate that was itself destroying Europe. In the German government a small group of men had a brilliant idea: why not sow further confusion in an increasingly chaotic Russia by arranging for Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, the most notorious of revolutionary extremists, currently safely bottled up in neutral Switzerland, to go home" Catherine Merridale"s Lenin on the Train recreates Lenin"s extraordinary journey from harmless exile in Zurich, across a Germany falling to pieces from the war"s deprivations, and northwards to the edge of Lapland to his eventual ecstatic reception by the revolutionary crowds at Petrograd"s Finland Station. With great skill and insight Merridale weaves the story of the train and its uniquely strange group of passengers with a gripping account of the now half-forgotten liberal Russian revolution and shows how these events intersected. She brilliantly uses a huge range of contemporary eyewitnesses, observing Lenin as he travelled back to a country he had not seen for many years. Many thought he was a mere "useful idiot", others thought he would rapidly be imprisoned or killed, others that Lenin had in practice few followers and even less influence. They would all prove to be quite wrong. The Last Train to Zona Verde is Paul Theroux's compelling account of his final African journey. Heading north from Cape Town, through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Angola, Paul Theroux makes a final journey along Africa's western edge. The end of the line is the Congo but Theroux discovers that his trip's pleasures are tempered by a growing sense that the Africa which so long ago helped form him has vanished, along with the hopes of many of its people. Yet after 2,500 miles Theroux finds that though this will be his ultimate African adventure there are still surprises to be found by the traveller prepared to step off the beaten track. "A melancholic, farewell journey...Theroux does all this inimitably, and more, getting better the more detours he takes". (Evening Standard). "Hard to put down, brutal honesty. Theroux proves himself a sharp observer of human foibles and a master of pithy description. The book he has crafted out of his experiences packs plenty of bang". (Spectator). "As we worry about the future of the continent, there could be no better guide than Theroux ...his sense that this is his final journey adds to the power". (GQ). "Excellent, barbed reportage". (Independent). "Probably the most important travel writer of his generation". (Sunday Times). Paul Theroux's books include Dark Star Safari, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Riding the Iron Rooster, The Great Railway Bazaar, The Elephanta Suite, A Dead Hand, The Tao of Travel and The Lower River. The Mosquito Coast and Dr Slaughter have both been made into successful films. Paul Theroux divides his time between Cape Cod and the Hawaiian islands.

Return to "The Great Railway Bazaar" in "Ghost Train to the Eastern Star" as Paul Theroux experiences the journey that launched his travel writing career for the second time. Thirty years ago Paul Theroux left London and travelled across Asia and back again by train. His account of the journey - "The Great Railway Bazaar" - was a landmark book and made his name as the foremost travel writer of his generation. Now Theroux makes the trip all over again to discover the changes that have swept the continents, and also learn what an old man will make of a young man's adventure. Covering his journey through Eastern Europe and Asia, "Ghost Train to the Eastern Star" is a brilliant chronicle of change and an exploration of how travel is 'the saddest of pleasures'. "A brilliant eye, readable and vivid. Theroux has still got it". ("Observer"). "A dazzler, giving us the highs and lows of his journey with tenderness and acerbic humour...fellow travelling weirdoes, amateur taxi drivers, bar-girls and long-suffering locals are brought vividly to life". ("Spectator"). "Fans of Theroux are not likely to be disappointed. Theroux has great descriptive skill...the world is slightly less unknown by virtue of reading the book". ("Sunday Telegraph"). American travel writer Paul Theroux is known for the rich descriptions of people and places that is often streaked with his distinctive sense of irony; his other non-fiction titles, "Riding the Iron Rooster", "The Happy Isles of Oceania", "Sunrise with Seamonsters", "The Kingdom by the Sea", "The Tao of Travel", "The Old Patagonian Express", "The Great Railway Bazaar", "Dark Star Safari", "Fresh-air Fiend", "Sir Vidia's Shadow", "The Pillars of Hercules", and his novels and collections of short stories, including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize winner "The Mosquito Coast" are available from Penguin.
