Lyrical Chronicle of Ireland - 2862187865

Lyrical Chronicle of Ireland Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from A Lyrical Chronicle of Ireland: The Irish Sisters; Early Poems, Meditative or Devotional; Poems for the Most Part Connected With the Great Irish Famine, 1846-1849; Urbs Roma; St. Peter's Chains 'Inisfail' is an attempt to represent, as in a picture, the most stormy, but the most poetic period of Irish History. In simpler days than ours, when even rude feelings were tender, and when thought had not separated itself from action, poetry and history were more akin than they have been in recent times. In England and in Spain a series of ballads had early grown up, out of which rose the later literature of each country, ballads that recorded many a precious passage of old times, and embodied the genius, as well as the manners, of the past. Irish History no longer stands thus related to letters. Nowhere in Ireland can we move without being challenged by the monuments of the past; yet, for many of her sons, and those who ought to be the best instructed, and for the traveller from afar, there exists no Alfred, and no Wallace. Amenophra, and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Amenophra, and Other Poems I drank of Avon, too, - a dangerous draught, That roused within the feverish thirst of song. Walter Savage Landor. I Have suffered these few lyrical efforts to be collected and republished, partly at the instance of my friend, Mr. Hill, and partly because I deem it a fitting acknowledgment to the critics, for the uniform courtesy, - I may even say, clemency - received at their hands. Many of my earlier and lighter poems have been very properly omitted from this volume, and my altered conception of the poetic function as well as of the poetic principle, causes me to hope that they will meet with that Euthanasia which Oblivion generally accords to the immature effusions of youth's third lustrum. Whether the residue herein preserved merits a similar fate, is a question, as Sir Thomas Browne would say, 'not beyond all conjecture!' Lichens from the Old Rock Poems (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Lichens From the Old Rock Poems It is certain that many of my fellow-countrymen, who are now toiling in distant lands, occasionally derive no small amount of pleasure from the mere contemplation of a tiny flower, a withered sprig of heath, or even a rude unshapely fragment of lichen, which, in days gone by, has been gathered by a friendly hand from their native rocks. To those individuals themselves, and also to those of my readers who can appreciate the mind which does not estimate such humble mementoes according to their intrinsic worth, I chiefly look for indulgence, trusting that my object in offering this little collection of poems, may be deemed at least a small compensation for the numerous errors and shortcomings, which so inevitably accompany want of experience. Selected Poems of Lord Byron (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Selected Poems of Lord Byron Returning to London, he seduced the Marchioness of Carmarthen, Lady Conyers, whom after her divorce he married, and treated brutally, though, by her death, he lost her income of Ł4,000 a year. She died in 1784, leaving a daughter, Augusta, who was an important factor in the poet's life. Two years later he married Catherine Gordon of Gight, near Aberdeen, who had about Ł23,000 in her own right. She is described as "a dumpy young woman, with a large waist, florid complexion, and homely features," lacking even a common education, and subject to "frequent fits of uncontrollable fury." Her father had committed suicide. Captain Byron quickly ran through all but Ł3,000 of her small property, and three years after his son's birth he begged a guinea from her and fled to France, where he died, possibly by suicide, at Valenciennes, August, 1791. Though Mrs. Byron had found it impossible to live with him, it is said that when she heard of his death she disturbed the neighborhood with her shrieks. Byron claimed to have remembered his father, who, when living apart from his wife, used to waylay the child and play with him, and once took him home to his lodgings for the night. He idealized the memory of his sire in a few pathetic lines in Lara. Byron's childhood was spent in Aberdeen. Perhaps fortunate in being out of the influence of "Mad Jack," he was doubly unfortunate in his mother's management. Caresses of passionate violence often alternated with fierce blows. Kaw-Wau-Nita, and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Kaw-Wau-Nita, and Other Poems The incident related in the closing of the Poem, Kaw-Wau-Nita, was told me in the month of May, 1859, by C. J. Goss, Esq., in company with whom I made a trip from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to Boulder City, Colorado, in the season just mentioned. We had camped one night on the banks of a small stream, on the very ground, as I was informed, where the closing scene of the Poem was enacted, and from which the stream took the name of Rawhide Creek. It was while there that Mr. Goss gare me the facts of the case, which facts are known to many of those who crossed the Plains in the early golden days of California. It may be considered an over-drawn picture, but a reality is a reality; and, though a fabric of romance may be woven around it, still the romance can never do away with a fact. Mrs Eunice True Daniels - Poems Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Poems: With a Memoir of Her Life The friends of Mrs. Daniels have often expressed a desire to have her poems printed, or put in some form which would insure their preservation. This is now undertaken in obedience to their wishes. Only a small number of copies of this edition is now printed, and that, solely for private distribution among her relatives and friends. These Poems have been selected from a large folio manuscript, neatly bound, in which she copied some of her own productions, as well as many choice pieces of poetry by other authors, and also from loose leaves found in her possession, or kindly furnished by those who had received them from her own hands.
