Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Information Management, grade: -, University of Namibia (Department of Library and Information Science), course: Master of Information Science, language: English, abstract: This study investigated the information needs and seeking behaviour of pastors in Namibia. The purpose of the study was to establish the information required by pastors to carry out their work, how they seek information and the problems they encounter in doing so. A mixed-method approach research was used to meet the objectives of the study. A stratified quota sample of 200 pastors was used based on Walpole s formula for proportions. One hundred and thirty-eight (69%) participants responded to the questionnaire, while 16 pastors from different denominations in Windhoek, purposively selected as key informants, were interviewed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) basic level descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative data from the questionnaires, while content analysis was used to analyse qualitative data from the interviews. The findings of this research are that pastors need information for counselling, community development, administration, evangelism, preaching, teaching, public relations and leading a service. When pastors do not find information from formal sources (Bible concordances, Bible commentaries, Bible translations, etc.) in their personal libraries, they turn to informal sources of information (Holy Spirit and other experienced pastors). The respondents revealed that their information seeking behaviour is affected by the fact that existing information is either in languages they do not understand or is not relevant to their contexts. They also pointed out that they lack skills to search the Internet, and the majority have no money to buy computers or subscribe to the Internet. Many organisations are involved in the provision of pastoral information services but they lack coordination to serve the pastors effectively. A framework for setting up pastoral information services has been proposed. The researcher recommends that the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN), the Pastors Book Set (PBS) programme, theological colleges, and local churches work together to systematically provide pastors with the necessary resources. They should periodically assess the information needs and information seeking behaviour of pastors. They need to jointly run workshops to make pastors aware of available sources of information, to encourage the sharing of information among pastors, and to equip pastors with computer and Internet skills. There is also need to repackage information into local languages and in formats that pa

It transpired to my knowledge, by examining case law as well as commentaries to such cases, that legal professionals are not aware of the exact meaning of the institute of interdiction in its many denominations. This study was precisely conducted with the aim in mind, to try and outline the exact meaning of interdiction. In order to be able to do so, I contrasted the meaning of interdiction in the civil context and its meaning in the criminal context. To further enhance the study I examined the Italian and French jurisdiction's position on such an institute to be able to offer an insight on their workings of the rules that relate to interdiction and distinguish their position with the position in the Maltese jurisdiction, being the jurisdiction I practice in. This study has enabled me to propose a change in the nomenclature of the institute of interdiction, which could produce less confusion in the future when professionals, such as Lawyers, Legal Procurators, Notaries and Judges, are confronted with the working of such principle. Thus this book is a helpful aid to all the legal professionals and an imperative tool to the law student.

Elementary Arithmetic, for the Slate Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Elementary Arithmetic, for the Slate: In Which Methods and Rules Are Based Upon Principles Established by Induction The object of this book, designed especially for beginners in Written Arithmetic, is twofold, viz.: 1st. To give to young learners a good foundation for the study of the Science of Numbers, by basing all Methods of Operation upon Principles; and, 2d. To give them as much knowledge as possible of the business affairs of Fife, by the introduction of business transactions stated in correct business language. The plan of the work differs, in most of its essential points, from that or other works of a like grade. To these points of difference - and it is confidently believed of superiority - the attention of parents and teachers is particularly invited. General Divisions. - Chapters. - The work is divided into six chapters, the first one of which is devoted to Integers; the second, to Decimals; the third, to Compound Numbers; the fourth, to Fractions; the fifth, to Percentage, and the sixth, to Miscellaneous Review Problems. Integers and Decimals are but parts of the same class of numbers, the latter being an extension of the decimal scale to the right of the decimal point, or below ones. They are both subject to the same laws, and all operations upon them are based upon the same principles. Therefore, in the natural order of arrangement of subjects, the proper place for Decimals is immediately after Integers. Compound Numbers differ from Integers and Decimals only in the scales of increase and decrease, which, in the latter, are uniform and decimal, while in the former, they are Irregular and varying. The new facts to be learned in Compound Numbers are, the scales or tables, and their application to the processes of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. Only two of the denominations given in this book - 5 1/2 or 5.5 yards are 1 rod, and 30 1/4 or 30.25 square yards are 1 square rod - are Mixed Numbers, and these are as well expressed decimally as fractionally. There is, therefore, no good reason why Fractions should precede Compound Numbers, no knowledge of the former being necessary in studying the latter, while the advantages of the reverse order of arrangement are obvious. A knowledge of the preceding chapters prepares the pupil, on reaching Fractions, to comprehend the new facts to be learned, viz.: the Notation of Fractions, the General Principles of this class of numbers, and the application of these principles to the operations upon Fractional Numbers. In the general arrangement of the work, and also in its details, the fact has never been lost sight of, that only a small portion of all the children who commence the study of Arithmetic go through their text-book; and that a child should be taught first that which it is most desirable and important for him to know; so that, whenever he leave a school, the knowledge he has acquired will be of practical value to him in after life. Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900), one of the greatest philosophers of the nineteenth century. He helped establish a rich tradition of Russian spirituality, inspiring a whole generation of thinkers, who followed his many-faceted spirit into diverse realms, bringing together philosophy, mysticism, theology, poetry, and powerful visionary experience with a trenchant social message. Solovyov was also a prophet, having been granted three visions of Sophia, Divine Wisdom. Less known in the anglophone world than Berdyaev (who was a pupil of his), Solovyov has a contribution of the first importance to offer to Western thought at its deepest level. Solovyov came from a rich and not yet fully understood tradition; his erudition was stupendous. Like his predecessors he was extremely sensitive to such problems as the religious meaning of history, of creativity, of culture. It is important to emphasize a general link between Solovyiev and preceding currents of Russian thought, for his Christian philosophy in a sense embraces them all. Dostoyevsky and Leo Tolstoy sat at his feet. The differences between the Orthodox, Roman, and Anglo-Catholic and many of the Protestant Churches are not found in relation to the great dogmas or articles of the creed. Soloviev has a vital and unique message to Christians of all denominations; he offers a basis for reunion rarely suggested in Western Christianity, and this explains the motivation for this masterly study of Soloviev as playing a role in the Christian East similar to that played by John Henry Newman in the Christian West.

Discourse on the True Nature of Freedom and Slavery Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Discourse on the True Nature of Freedom and Slavery: Delivered Before the Washington Society of the New Jerusalem, in View of the One Hundred and Eighteenth Anniversary of Washington's Birth Those who heard this discourse delivered, will hardly recognize it in its printed form. The author rarely speaks his sermons precisely as, he has written them. Influx is proportioned to efllux. Good or ill reception in an audience wonderfully opens or shuts up a public speakers mind. And he has found new trains of thought suggested in the pulpit, which had never presented themselves in the study; or written thoughts have widely expanded, or run in varied channels, in delivery; according to the auditory's peculiar states of receptivity. In the present instance, he was led repeatedly into extemporaneous remarks, which, evaporating with the heat of somewhat fervid feeling, it has been impossible for him to recal in the cooler and calmer moments of reflection since. Yet he has wished to present at least the substance of those extemporaneous remarks in the printed discourse: and as prolixity is not so objectionable in one that is to be read as in one that is spoken, he has greatly extended what he said in answer to the senatorial argument against african slavery in this country being an evil. He has also put in those parts of the written discourse which had to be omitted for want of time. And he has added a few bottom notes. Moreover, he has printed the discourse on pica instead of small pica type, as he proposed in his circular for subscriptions. These causes have a good deal swelled its size and altered its form; but he trusts it will not be less acceptable on that account. Something may be said respecting the occasion for writing this discourse. The author had been several times asked, by a most worthy and valued member of our church in South Carolina, for his opinion on the propriety of a Newchurchman's holding slaves and continuing to reside in a slave state in violation of conscientious scruples. This led him to canvass the subject of slavery in his own mind for a good while. Subsequently removing from Pennsylvania to Maryland, a slave state, and residing in Baltimore upwards of five years, he had his attention again called to this subject by further correspondence with his southern friend. And the wide-spread agitation of the slavery question during the few past years, splitting up as it did some of the leading denominations of the old christian church, and thus giving it an imposing ecclesiastical and religious aspect, made him feel it his duty to discourse on this subject to his own congregation. This explains why he attempts to show the duty of Newchurchmen in regard to slavery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The nation of Israel, as God's Elect, looked forward to the coming of the Messiah as the most significant event in its existence and the acme of the Jewish people's hopes. Yet when Christ came in fulfilment of that dream, He was not recognized by His people, and consequently rejected. How could that be? The church had so corrupted the Written Word that it could not see any affinity between the Written and Living Word. The worship experience of the church was so far from the ideal given by the Father that Jesus declared it "in vain," because tradition replaced truth. "Christianity Today" calls to question the integrity of the church that Christ formed as a replacement of Judaism, whose worship He declared to be "in vain." When He comes the second time, will Christianity fare any better than Judaism? The fact that Christianity is split into so many diverse denominations inspired this book to inform, edify, and challenge Christendom to a more diligent study and conformity to biblical truth. About the Author Westwick Abijah Williams hails from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. He holds a B.A. in History and English, an M. A. in Education, and a Ph.D. in Education Administration. His teaching career spans the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, including twenty years as a High School principal. He is now retired. Dr. Williams married his high school sweetheart, Grace. Preaching of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Lexington Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The greatness of America's most influential preachers of the twentieth century came from their significant contributions to both religious and secular society. Some names, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Billy Graham, are universally recognized and typically thought of first by people today. Assorted reviews have also listed other notable names from various Christian denominations, but little recognition has been given to the Catholic contribution to preaching in the twentieth century. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is at least one Catholic name whose contributions belong with the top most influential American preachers of that era. Though many associate Sheen with his five years on prime time television in the 1950s, it was the decades he spent preaching that wrought a religious tone to the Cold War and led the way in a national renewal of religion. An epic battle was set between the forces of good and evil in Sheen's preaching, particularly in his Good Friday sermons. This rhetorical study seeks to understand how and why his preaching was so persuasive to the people of his day.

Handbook of Ecumenism and Confessional Studies. Vol. 1]§For ecumenism the encounter with Christians of other denominations is crucial. The present confessional study addresses this task from the perspective of particular churches. The majority of the authors of this handbook have grown up in their respective traditions. Not only the classical confessional families (Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Reformed) are presented here but also Christian communities (mainly of a free church and charismatic nature) with a much more recent past.

Most Americans say they believe in God, and more than a third say they attend religious services every week. Yet studies show that people do not really go to church as often as they claim, and it is not always clear what they mean when they tell pollsters they believe in God or pray. American Religion presents the best and most up-to-date information about religious trends in the United States, in a succinct and accessible manner. This sourcebook provides essential information about key developments in American religion since 1972, and is the first major resource of its kind to appear in more than two decades. Mark Chaves looks at trends in diversity, belief, involvement, congregational life, leadership, liberal Protestant decline, and polarization. He draws on two important surveys: the General Social Survey, an ongoing survey of Americans' changing attitudes and behaviors, begun in 1972; and the National Congregations Study, a survey of American religious congregations across the religious spectrum. Chaves finds that American religious life has seen much continuity in recent decades, but also much change. He challenges the popular notion that religion is witnessing a resurgence in the United States - in fact, traditional belief and practice is either stable or declining. Chaves examines why the decline in liberal Protestant denominations has been accompanied by the spread of liberal Protestant attitudes about religious and social tolerance, how confidence in religious institutions has declined more than confidence in secular institutions, and a host of other crucial trends.
