Prehistoric Religion Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Prehistoric Religion: A Study in Prehistoric Archaeology In the considerable literature on prehistoric archaeology that has accumulated in recent years, covering almost every aspect of the subject, so far as I am aware there has been no attempt in this country to bring together and interpret in a single volume the available material relating specifically to religious phenomena. There have been and are, of course, many excel- lent and quite invaluable regional studies which describe and discuss much of the data in particular areas and cultures - indeed but for them the present volume could not have been produced. There are also a number of works on various aspects of prehistory in general, directly or indirectly bearing on evidence analysed and reviewed in this book to which reference frequently has been made in its compilation, as will be seen from the footnotes and bibliographies. Nevertheless, for some time, and especially when the subject was discussed at a conference of the Prehistoric Society at the London University Institute of Archaeology in 1953, and at the meeting of the British Association at Bristol in 1955, it has seemed that an invest ligation of the field as an organized whole should be undertaken in the light of the evidence now at hand. In opening such an inquiry an initial problem was to decide how the term "prehistoric" should be interpreted, and what should be the terminus ad quem. To have drawn the line at the invention of the art of writing would have excluded all consideration of the texts, documents, and inscriptions written or carved on prehistoric or protohistoric tombs, temples, stelac or tablets which, particularly for this investigation, constitute an all important source of information, not only for contemporary belief and practice but also for their more remote background. Nuer Religion (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Nuer Religion I have previously written two books on the Nuer, a cattle-herding people dwelling in the swamps and savannah of the southern Anglo-Egyptian Sudan: The Nuer. A Description of the Modes of Livelihood and Political Institutions of a Nilotic People was published in 1940 and Kinship and Marriage among the Nuer in 1951. The present volume, Nuer Religion, completes a study of the Nuer which began in 1930. Accounts of religion in writings on the Nuer are generally meagre and superficial. The only detailed treatment is in Father J. P. Crazzolara's Zur Gesellschaft und Religion derNueer (1953), much of which appeared earlier in volume viii of Father W. Schmidt's Der Ur sprung der Gottesidee (1949). Those who read his account will see that it differs in many respects from what I now present, though less with regard to fact than in emphasis and interpretation. Although Nuer religious ideas and practices were a part of their way of life which greatly interested me, it was that to which I was able to give least attention during my short residence of a year in Nuerland. It was necessary to learn their language and to study their manner of livelihood and their family, kinship, and political activities before giving close attention to the more difficult problems of their religious thought. These tasks, all the heavier in the arduous conditions in which they had to be carried out, left me little time to pursue anything which could be called a systematic inquiry into religious matters. What I record I witnessed myself or is information given spontaneously during talks about other and more practical affairs or in comment on some event or experience. Such observations may, however, be more valuable in a study of religious thought than those derived from purposive inquiry. This is especially so when a people lack, as the Nuer do, anything which offers easy scope for such an inquiry, for they have nothing which can properly be called dogma, liturgy, and sacraments (in sensu stricto), and they lack a developed religious cult and mythology. This is doubtless one of the reasons why for the most part those who have written about the Nuer have said so little about their religion. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Psychological Approach, to the Study of Prophecy a Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts, and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree, of Doctor of Philosophy, (the Graduate Divinity School Department or Old Testament The psychology of religion is no longer a new field of research. Within the last two decades, it has been pursued from various points of approach, and no one who has followed its development can question its contribution to the clearer understanding and deeper appreciation of religion in its relation to the whole mental life. During these years both psychology and religion have been subjected to new scrutiny; a psychological method of dealing with religion has added zest in both fields of inquiry, and has produced interesting and stimulating results. These researches and their results have been of great practical value, especially in the province of child and adolescent religion. But comparatively little has been done in the way of a scientific analysis and an attempted explanation of the special and higher forms of religious experience, as exhibited by the prophet or the mystic. The literature in this field is still scanty. Professor Ames in his recent volume devotes a chapter to the psychology of religious genius. A. B. Davidson has dealt specifically, though briefly, with some of the phases of this topic. George Adam Smith in his commentaries on the prophets drops interesting hints of the possibilities in this line of research. Two more recent small volumes by Kaplan and Joyce show the tendency of the times. These books are in the nature of essays on the subject of prophetic psychology, rather than systematic and exhaustive treatments. Among the Germans even less has been done from the truly psychological point of approach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Moral Values a Study of the Principles of Conduct (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Moral Values a Study of the Principles of Conduct This volume, which is offered for the use of college and university classes, has grown out of the author's experience in trying to introduce students to the fundamental problems of ethics. It is hoped, however, that the book may make an appeal to a wider circle of readers - to men and women of various callings to whom neither convention nor authority seems to offer satisfactory answers to the insistent problems of the moral life. If such readers do not feel an interest in the more technical questions of philosophy, they are certainly concerned with those universal human problems that arise out of all genuine experience in the business of living. The titles and divisions of chapters will indicate the portions of the work best suited to individual readers. The attention of the general reader may, however, be called to Chapter VII, the World of Values, to Chapter VIII, Individual and Social Values, and also to the discussions of Moral Law, Freedom, and Morality and Religion. Several sections of this last chapter are devoted to the problem of evil. Contemporary events have served to make this problem keenly felt in many quarters where its significance has, in the past, been slighted or ignored. The appearance of another book in the field of ethics may seem to demand justification by the presence of features that distinguish it from the many able works already extant. The most obvious characteristic of the present work is suggested by its title. All the problems of morality are here treated as problems of value. The principle of value is carried through from the first chapter to the last, where it is applied to the questions of religion. Journal of Religion, 1922 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Journal of Religion, 1922 It is not peculiar to one region or to one people, but is the common denominator of all history from the very beginning of mans existence down to the present moment. Nations rise and fall, warriors and politicians come upon the scene only to disappear from view, while the rank and file of men in every age continue to make history in their own modest fashion. Their quest for food and clothing and other necessities of existence never ceases; they continue their struggle for the acquisition of wealth and power; they constantly strive to safeguard health and happiness through the establishment of various social institutions; they seek aesthetic satisfaction in the production of works of art and music and literature; they search for wisdom in the fields of invention, discovery, and intellectual discipline; and they ever yearn for protection and help in the presence of those mysterious forces of the universe which have so often become objects of fear, love, and worshipful adoration. With this widening of vision the historian is no longer content to center attention simply upon political happenings. The scope of his observation enlarges to include those common daily interests which have characterized the life of men in general at all tunes. But no one of these interests has been more conspicuous or persistent than religion. Of humanity's past it can still be said with a large measure of truth that "a man's religion is the chief fact with regard to him - a man's or a nation of men's" Therefore the study of religion falls properly and of necessity within the domain of the historian. During recent times the horizon of the theologian has also been enlarging. Formerly he was concerned for the most part with maintaining the validity of beliefs and practices current in the religion of his own day. AUFSTIEG UND NIEDERGANG DER RÖMISCHEN WELT (ANRW) is a work of international cooperation in the field of historical scholarship. Its aim is to present all important aspects of the ancient Roman world, as well as its legacy and continued influence in medieval and modern times. Subjects are dealt with in individual articles written in the light of present day research. The work is divided into three parts: I. From the Origins of Rome to the End of the Republic II. The Principate III. Late Antiquity Each part consists of six systematic sections, which occasionally overlap: 1. Political History, 2. Law, 3. Religion, 4. Language and Literature, 5. Philosophy and the Sciences, 6. The Arts. ANRW is organized as a handbook. It is a survey of Roman Studies in the broadest sense, and includes the history of the reception and influence of Roman Culture up to the present time. The individual contributions are, depending on the nature of the subject, either concise presentations with bibliography, problem and research reports, or representative investigations covering broad areas of subjects. Approximately one thousand scholars from thirty-five nations are collaborating on this work. The articles appear in German, English, French or Italian. As a work for study and reference, ANRW is an indispensable tool for research and academic teaching in the following disciplines: Ancient, Medieval and Modern History; Byzantine and Slavonic Studies; Classical, Medieval Latin Romance and Oriental Philology; Classical, Oriental and Christian Archaeology and History of Art; Legal Studies; Religion and Theology, especially Church History and Patristics. Spinoza and Religion Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Spinoza and Religion: A Study of Spinoza's Metaphysics and of His Particular Utterances in Regard to Religion A German translator and expounder of Spinoza's works declares that in the whole history of human thought there is not to be found a system more difficult to understand and to explain. After studying the system in its details, I am disposed to accept this assertion as probably true. I have blinked no difficulties, however; hut have felt it my duty to study each one until I have succeeded either in harmonizing it with the system as a whole, or in clearly showing it to be a logical inconsistency. Spinoza's logical inconsistencies are of two kinds: (1) fallacies of reasoning, and (2) the acceptance of contradictory propositions which are correctly deduced, although from different and incompatible presuppositions. My excuse for adding another book to the already formidable pile of literature on Spinoza is the fact that his relation to religion has not yet been made the subject of specific, comprehensive, and candid treatment; and that consequently there prevail not only among intelligent people in general, but even among students of philosophy, the vaguest possible notions in regard to this matter. Anyone who may feel disposed to think that I am performing a work of supererogation, is asked to suspend his judgment until he has read Chapter II. of my "Introduction." Truth of the Christian Religion (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Truth of the Christian Religion The author of the work now submitted to the British public in a translation enjoys a very high reputation in Germany alike as a theological writer and a theological teacher. At the age of thirty-nine he was called to succeed Dorner in the University of Berlin. His works on the Nature of the Christian Religion and Truth of the Christian Religion are extremely fresh and ingenious in thought, while remarkably free from those literary peculiarities which so often make German theological treatises difficult and unpleasant reading. He and Professor Herrmann of Marburg are generally recognised as the two most eminent and interesting representatives of the Ritschlian or Neo-Kantian theology. This theology has been dominant in Germany during the last fifteen years, and is still gaining adherents and growing in influence. In fact, no other German theological school or movement can at present compare with it in strength and vitality. Hence young men from this country who study theology in Germany almost inevitably come more or less under its influence. It is certainly a force in the theological world which must be reckoned with, and which eminently deserves to be studied. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Religion of Ancient Britain, Historically Considered While the author of the following pages has had for many years a strong bias for the study of history, and a great partiality for antiquarian researches, he has at the same time been deeply impressed with the paramount importance of scriptural truth. This disposition led him to turn his attention to the religious condition of ancient Britain, and now induces him to present to the public the result of his labours. Many of the works which have come under his notice contain much important information; but he has not found any single volume which, in his judgment, was calculated to afford a just and complete view of the religion of our country in ancient times. Numerous writers on this subject have been satisfied with a very brief and meagre notice of important events; while others, in detailing the peculiarities of the different religious systems which have successively prevailed, have evinced an almost entire disregard of the great principles of divine truth, or have spoken of religion as entirely identified with the political and external condition of the church as a corporate body. When correct views have been entertained on this point, they have mostly been buried in large and expensive works. Pre-University Paper from the year 2014 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 15, , language: English, comment: Die Facharbeit ist durchgehend auf hohem englischem Niveau geschrieben und Abitur geeignet. Sie erhielt die Abschließende Wertung von 15 Punkten (1+)., abstract: "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?"§This quote might be the most famous one from the love story of Romeo and Juliet. It is known by many people around the globe and translated into various languages. It is also known, that the tragedy deals with the ideal of true love and attends to the contact with insurmountable disparities.§§Down to the present day they are numerous variations of the original plot, for instance in ballet, classic theatre or movies. The tragedy s popularity is not deniable, and wittingly or unwittingly the story seems familiar to almost every reader or viewer. This has the cause that in almost everybody s life there is or was at least one point, where most of the people can relate their personal love-fate to this of Romeo s and Juliet s; A loving couple separated by the hate-filled relationship of their families.§§At that point, it is nonessential if the separating barrier is represented by parental home, origin, social class, religion, or financial background. Due to this, Romeo and Juliet still is of current interest and affects readers emotionally even centuries after its publishing. This is, for me personally, fascinating, and I want to research into the play to understand Shakespeare s way of thinking and intentions as well as to explore the limitations and possibilities when it comes to transfer this demanding work by Shakespeare into twenty-first century scenarios.

Religion of Ruskin, the Life and Works of John Ruskin Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Religion of Ruskin, the Life and Works of John Ruskin: A Biographical and Anthological Study In preparing Books II to VI of this Authology the writings of Ruskin have first been arranged, as far as seemed practicable, into groups of subjects - then quoted in the chronological order of the works in each group. The reader may thus find the progress of the great Author's religious mind in his own words. All Ruskin's larger works were arranged by himself, or under his direction, into volumes, parts, sections, chapters and paragraphs, to which are often attached lengthy prefaces and appendices. The method adopted in the following selections is to give the name and number of the volume at the head of the chapter, letting the Author's own paragraph number stand at the beginning of each quotation, and giving the further references at the end. Thus on page 105 of this volume will be found paragraphs on "Sensuality Fatal to Beauty in Art" The numbers 21 and 24 are those of Ruskin's own paragraphing and this, with Pt. Ill, Sec. 1, Ch. 14, puts the reader in possession of the full reference, viz.: Modern Painters, Vol. II, Part III, Section 1,Chapter 14, Paragraphs 21, 24. In some instances, where the quotations are continuous, the references to the chapters, etc., are only given at the end of several, but the numbers of the paragraphs are always given. This is especially notable of Vol. IV, Modem Painters. In still other instances no reference is needed other than the number of the paragraph of the work from which it is taken. It must be understood that the topical headlines are our own and not Ruskin's. "Ruskin's Complete Works." "Life of John Ruskin," Collingwood. "John Ruskin," Frederick Harrison. "John Ruskin, Social Reformer," J. A. Hobson. "An Introduction to the Writings of John Ruskin," Vida D. Scudder. "Letters to the Clergy," F. A. Malleson. "Letters to M. G. and H. G." Excerpt from The New Education in Religion: With a Curriculum of Jewish Studies The traveler into a new country is safest with a guide. The guide must be familiar with the ground to be traversed, and through his knowledge and experience, must command full confidence. Our children as they enter the Religious School are to be guided into a strange and untried domain. The teacher is the guide to whom they look with unquestioning confidence in his knowledge and sincerity. To merit this trust and to fulfil it, is to have at once the greatest of responsibilities and the most joyous of privileges. That trust falls upon every parent when the mysterious gift of a new life - that of a child, comes into the home, for upon the influence of the parental example, training and instruction, more than upon aught else will depend the whole future of the child's character, conduct and soul culture. The first school from Patriarchal days was the home, and the home still is and will ever remain the earliest and most important school of child-training. "A child's mind," said one of the Rabbis, "is like a clean tablet on which nothing has been written." The first records on that tablet are made in the home and their impress is indelible. Therefore, every earnest parent is eager to find help to be a safe and wise teacher, friend and guide to his child. These lessons aim to place within the reach of parents the results of the study and experience of those who have gone over the ground in advance.
