Excerpt from Report of a Board of United States Naval Engineers on the Herreshoff System of Motive Machinery, 1881 Sir: The undersigned, appointed a board by the department's order, of November 5, 1880, to proceed to Bristol, R.I., and there make such trials with the steam-yacht Leila, embodying the latest improvements in the Herreshoff system of motive machinery, as would enable them to give an opinion of its applicability to naval vessels of the Leila's dimensions, and of the advisability of so applying it - reporting the same to the Bureau of Steam Engineering, accompanied by such data and drawings as would enable the department to follow the reasons for the opinions expressed and the recommendations made - have the honor to state that we proceeded as directed, and made a careful study of the system in question, collecting the required data and drawings, and making such experiments as appeared proper to us for a complete elucidation of the qualities of the Herreshoff system of motive machinery. The entire expense of this investigation was borne by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, which furnished the vessel and crew, placing both at our disposal for the purpose of the experiments, and leaving us entirely untrammeled in their conduct, but supplying every facility for making them. The great cost of such trials, which is quite serious for individuals, prevented us from availing ourselves of this liberality any farther than was absolutely necessary for the requisite experimental determinations. We varied the conditions of the machinery as much as possible without resorting to costly alterations or readjustments, and believe our experiments will be found sufficiently exhaustive, not only for the immediate purpose, but also for the solution of some important problems in steam-engineering not hitherto experimentally examined. The steam-yachts of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company have long been celebrated for their high qualities. Garfield, International Cotton Exposition, Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight, Thumb Fire, Inauguration of Chester A. Arthur, Ashland tragedy, 1881 Minnesota tornado outbreak, 1881 Hopkins tornado, Inauguration of James A. Garfield. Excerpt: The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a roughly 30-second gunfight that took place at about 3:00 p.m. on October 26, 1881 in Tombstone, Arizona Territory of the United States. Although only three men were killed during the gunfight, it is generally regarded as the most famous gunfight in the history of the Old West and has come to symbolize the struggle between legal authority and outlaws during an era where law enforcement was often weak or nonexistent. The gunfight was relatively unknown to the American public until 1931 when author Stuart Lake published what has since been determined to be a largely fictionalized biography, Wyatt Earp: Frontier Marshal, two years after Wyatt's death. Lake retold his story in 1946 in a book that director John Ford developed into the movie My Darling Clementine. After the movie Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was released in 1957, the shootout came to be known by that name. The conflict has since then been portrayed with varying accuracy in numerous Western films and books. Despite its name, the gunfight began in a 15-20 feet (4.6-6.1 m) wide empty lot or alley on Fremont Street, between C. S. Fly's lodging house and photographic studio and the MacDonald assay house. The lot was six doors east of an alleyway that served as the O.K. Corral's rear entrance. The two opposing parties were initially only about 6 feet (1.8 m) apart. About thirty shots were fired in thirty seconds. Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne ran from the fight, unharmed. Frank and Tom McLaury and Billy Clanton were killed; Morgan Earp, Virgil Earp, and Doc Holliday were wounded and survived. Ike Clanton filed murder charges against Doc Holliday and the Earps and after a month-long preliminary hearing they were exonerated. The Earps and Doc Holliday were charged by Billy Clanton's brother, Ike Clanton, with murder but were eventually exonerated by a local judge after a 30-day preliminary hearing and then again by a local grand jury. The so-called cowboy faction allegedly ta

The immediate 'prequel' to Men-at-Arms 'United States Army 1812-14', covering the crucial period between the end of the Revolutionary war and the resumption of war with Britain in 1812. It was in this period that the decision was taken (just) that the USA should even have an army. It was a colourful transitional force, 'Mad Anthony' Wayne's Legion fought some significant battles against the Indians; a regular army was founded, and grew from scattered wilderness garrisons to a conventional force able to face the British regulars and Canadian volunteers in 1812-14.
