Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Walks in the Country Near London NEW HOLLAND PUBLISHERS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In 25 carefully planned walks, "Walks in the Country Near London" reveals the myriad treasures that lie just beyond London's urban sprawl. From easy rambles through apple orchards and lush pastures in Kent to more exhilarating rambles along Sharpenhoe Clappers' chalk escarpments in Bedfordshire, there is a walk here for everyone. Full-colour photographs capture each area's refreshing rural charms, while clear mapping pinpoints everything from designated trails and stately homes to traditional pubs and cosy tea rooms. With characteristic humour, Christopher Somerville guides readers along hedged, grassy lanes, across open, airy farmland and through some of the finest historic homes, castles and churches that England has to offer. Along the way, he shares fascinating tales about the characters who trod these same paths throughout the centuries - from persecuted Catholic priests making their way to safe houses under the cover of night, to such celebrated figures as Anne Boleyn, John Bunyan, William Blake and Benjamin Disraeli. With a wealth of interesting anecdotes and intriguing information, this is the perfect guide for history buffs and casual walkers alike.

London Orbital is Iain Sinclair's voyage of discovery into the unloved outskirts of the city. Encircling London like a noose, the M25 is a road to nowhere, but when Iain Sinclair sets out to walk this asphalt loop - keeping within the 'acoustic footprints' - he is determined to find out where the journey will lead him. Stumbling upon converted asylums, industrial and retail parks, ring-fenced government institutions and lost villages, Sinclair discovers a Britain of the fringes, a landscape consumed by developers. London Orbital charts this extraordinary trek and round trip of the soul, revealing the country as you've never seen it before. "My book of the year. Sentence for sentence, there is no more interesting writer at work in English". (John Lanchester, Daily Telegraph). "A magnum opus, my book of the year. I urge you to read it. In fact, if you're a Londoner and haven't read it by the end of next year, I suggest you leave". (Will Self, Evening Standard). "A journey into the heart of darkness and a fascinating snapshot of who we are, lit by Sinclair's vivid prose. I'm sure it will be read fifty years from now". (J. G. Ballard, Observer). Iain Sinclair is the author of Downriver (winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Encore Award); Landor's Tower; White Chappell, Scarlet Tracings; Lights Out for the Territory; Lud Heat; Rodinsky's Room (with Rachel Lichtenstein); Radon Daughters; London Orbital, Dining on Stones, Hackney, that Rose-Red Empire, and Ghost Milk. He is also the editor of London: City of Disappearances.

The Tower of London is an icon of England's history. William the Conqueror built the White Tower after his invasion and conquest in 1066, to dominate London and it has become infamous as a place of torture, execution and murder. The deaths of royals attracted most attention; the murder of Princes in the Tower, the beheading of Henry VIII's wives, Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard, and Lady Jane Grey, Henry's great-niece and queen for just nine days. Few prisoners recorded their experiences, but John Gerard, a Catholic priest imprisoned during Elizabeth I's reign, wrote of being questioned in the torture-room, which contained 'every device and instrument of torture'. After being hung from manacles, his wrists were swollen and he could barely walk. Members of the aristocracy could not be tortured, and those incarcerated for a long time used their time to write. Sir Walter Raleigh wrote his vast History of the World in the Tower. Control of the Tower was vital at times of crisis, during rebellions and civil wars. It has also been the country's principal arsenal, it housed the royal mint, the national archives, the crown jewels and wealthy Londoners' riches, and in the royal menagerie it contained one of the earliest zoos. Stephen Porter's landmark new history traces the evolution of the Tower and its changing role, the many personalities who lived or were imprisoned there, and the 'voices' of contemporaries during the Tower's long history, spanning almost 1000 years.

In Edge of the Orison the visionary Iain Sinclair walks in the steps of poet John Clare. In 1841 the poet John Clare fled an asylum in Epping Forest and walked eighty miles to his home in Northborough. He was searching for his lost love, Mary Joyce - a woman three years dead ...In 2000 Iain Sinclair set out to recreate Clare's walk away from madness. He wanted to understand his bond with the poet and escape the gravity of his London obsessions. Accompanied on this journey by his wife Anna (who shares a connection with Clare), the artist Brian Catling and magus Alan Moore - as well as a host of literary ghosts, both visionary and romantic - Sinclair's quest for Clare becomes an investigation into madness, sanity and the nature of the poet's muse. "Brilliant ...amusing, alarming and poignant. An elegy for an already lost English landscape. Magnificent and urgent". (Robert Macfarlane, Times Literary Supplement). "A sensitive, beautifully rendered portrait ...a feast, a riddle, a slowly unravelling conundrum ...a love-letter to British Romanticism". (Independent). "Sinclair walks every inch of his wonderful novels and psychogeographies, pacing out huge word-courses like an architect laying out a city on an empty plain". (J. Stretched round the Cornish coast o'er dale and hill The South West Coastal Path means no man ill Vast sandy beaches children's dreams to fill While surfers ride the breaker's foaming mill And Jack heads for the sand dunes with his Jill John and Phil decide to walk the Cornish coast during the 1999 total eclipse of the sun. They travel to Devon by train - the wrong coast in the wrong county. Such unconventional planning continues when they arrange to take turns going back to London despite possibly missing the eclipse. Ups and downs of the walk are reflected in their fortunes - gear goes missing and Phil suffers from horrendous blisters while John chats up anything in a skirt. John is sorry for Phil when he loves and loses, but wonders if he has a pact with the Devil when he displays super-human strength on the climbs. Ruined tin mines, the struggling fishing and tourism industries, but friendly and resilient locals, form the back-drop to this true account of 'two men on a mission'. But which will be Jack. And is there a Jill? John Rayment teaches Business Management at Ashcroft International Business School, APU, Chelmsford. He specialises in Finance and Management, having written several texts in the field. Hard to believe given the contents of the book, these include one on Decision Making and Problem Solving. While there will always be a difference between theory and practice, this does seem to be a clear case of 'Do what I say, not what I do'.

Day of the Triffids KUPERARD

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In 1951 John Wyndham published his novel "The Day of the Triffids to moderate acclaim. Fifty-two years later, this horrifying story is a science fiction classic, touted by "The Times (London) as having "all the reality of a vividly realized nightmare." Bill Masen, bandages over his wounded eyes, misses the most spectacular meteorite shower England has ever seen. Removing his bandages the next morning, he finds masses of sightless people wandering the city. He soon meets Josella, another lucky person who has retained her sight, and together they leave the city, aware that the safe, familiar world they knew a mere twenty-four hours before is gone forever. But to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, one must survive the Triffids, strange plants that years before began appearing all over the world. The Triffids can grow to over seven feet tall, pull their roots from the ground to walk, and kill a man with one quick lash of their poisonous stingers. With society in shambles, they are now poised to prey on humankind. Wyndham chillingly anticipates bio-warfare and mass destruction, fifty years before their realization, in this prescient account of Cold War paranoia.
