Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... The Father, the Son and Göran is a story about Sweden and Eritrea. About being a son and about being a father. About life and death and then life again. About Dawit Isaak. About fighting for your life in the desert and on the ocean, arriving in Sweden and being deported. About colonialism, politics and Swedish foreign aid. About civil war in Africa and burning cars in Stockholm. About parallel worlds that are linked together. This is the story of how one man and what happened one night in Eritrea almost thirty-five years ago have affected people around the world ever since. The photojournalist Göran Assbring was 33 years old when he left his wife and his three small children behind in their terraced house in Akalla, Stockholm, to return to Eritrea in order to follow the Eritrean Liberation Front in their struggle for independence from Ethiopia. It was to be his last tour. Göran was shot and killed in an ambush in October 1983. Back in Akalla, his wife, newly born twin daughters and their eight-year-old son Kalle were waiting in vain. Kalle made it through his teens, growing up in the suburb without his father and with a mental picture of the country in which his father had disappeared. He was in his twenties when he travelled to Eritrea for the first time in order to see the country with his own eyes and to find closure. His journey was the beginning of a new story. Göran was not just anybody. When Eritreażs home secretary heard that Kalle Assbring was in the country he arranged a meeting. Kalleżs father was a martyr, a hero who had died in the struggle for an independent Eritrea. Back in Sweden, a letter arrived from the Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak who was sending Kalle a photo of his family, informing him that he had christened his son Yoran (the Eritrean version of Göran) in his memory. Kalle encounters more children who have been given his fatherżs name, both in Eritrea and in Europe. Göran Assbringżs documentation of the struggle for independence had formed strands in a network that continued to affect peopleżs lives. In The Fadern, sonen och Göran events have effects that reach all the way to Sweden. Eritrean domestic affairs have an impact on the lives of many Eritreans in exile, families are torn when it comes to the President, the former EPLF warrior Esaias Afewerki. One night in the winter of 2012, the political friction manifests itself as several Eritrean assembly rooms are ravaged by fire. The past continues into the future. About Kalle Assbring: Kalle Assbring (born 1975) is based in Stockholm. He attended Nordens Fotoskola, Biskops Arnö. He has been a freelance photographer with a large customer base since 2001 at the same time as he has been working on his own long-term projects. Outernational - A Story about Trinity Sound System was published by Dokument Press in 2007. The very personal account Fadern, sonen och Göran will be out soon.

An unforgiving place, home to the most elite warriors of the world, Thor's powers and abilities deepen as he trains. His friendships deepen, too, as they face adversities together, beyond what they could imagine. But as they find themselves up against unimaginable monsters , The Hundred quickly goes from training session to a matter of life or death. Not all will survive. Along the way, Thor's dreams, along with his mysterious encounters with Argon, will continue to plague him, to press him to try to learn more about who he is, who his mother is, and what the source of his powers are. What is his destiny? Back in the Ring, matters are getting much worse. As Kendrick is imprisoned, Gwendolyn finds it landing on her to try to save him, to save the Ring by bringing down her brother Gareth. She hunts for clues for her father's murderer along with her brother Godfrey, and along the way, the two of them will become much closer, united in their cause. But Gwendolyn finds herself in mortal danger as she presses too deep, and she may be in over her head. Gareth attempts to wield the Dynasty Sword and learns what it means to be King, becoming drunk with the abuse of power. He rules ruthlessly, becoming paranoid. As the noose tightens on the king's assassin, the McClouds attack deeper into the Ring, and King's Court finds itself in an increasingly precarious position. Gwendolyn pines for Thor's return, for them to be together, for their love to blossom. But with powerful forces in their way, it is questionable if that chance will ever come. Will Thor survive The Hundred? Will King's Court collapse? Will MacGil's murderer be found? Will Gwendolyn end up with Thor? And will Thor finally learn the secret of his destiny? Anarchy Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"Anarchy" is the knuckle-whitening third novel in Stewart Binns' "The Making of England" series. Ruthless brutality, greed and ambition: the "Anarchy". The year is 1186, the thirty-second year of the reign of Henry II. Gilbert Foliot, Bishop of London, has lived through long Henry's reign and that of his grandfather, Henry I. He has witnessed the terrifying civil war between Henry II's mother, the Empress Matilda, and her cousin, Stephen; a time so traumatic it becomes known as the Anarchy. The greatest letter writer of the 12th Century, Folio gives an intimate account of one of England's most troubled eras. Central to his account is the life of a knight he first met over fifty years earlier, Harold of Hereford. Harold's life is an intriguing microcosm of the times. Born of noble blood and legendary lineage, he is one of the nine founders of the Knights Templar and a survivor of the fearsome battles of the Crusader States in the Holy Land. Harold is loyal warrior in the cause of the Empress Matilda. On his broad shoulders, Harold carries the legacy of England's past and its dormant hopes for the future. Stewart Binns' "Anarchy" is a gripping novel in the great tradition of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell, and is the third in "The Making of England" trilogy, following "Conquest" and "Crusade". Praise for Stewart Binns: "Binns' stories are a terrific mix of history and human drama". (Celia Sandys: Author, presenter and granddaughter of Winston Churchill). "A fascinating mix of fact, legend and fiction ...this is storytelling at its best". ("Daily Mail"). Stewart Binns began his professional life as an academic. He then pursued several adventures, including a stint at the BBC, before settling into a career as a schoolteacher, specializing in history. Later in life, a lucky break took him back to the BBC, which was the beginning of a successful career in television. He has won a BAFTA, a Grierson, an RTS and a Peabody for his documentaries. Stewart's passion is English history, especially its origins and folklore. His previous novels in "The Making of England" trilogy are "Conquest" and "Crusade".

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A powerful account of the life of Tamerlane the Great (1336-1405), the last master nomadic power, one of history's most extreme tyrants, and the subject of Marlowe's famous play. Marozzi travelled in the footsteps of the great Mogul Emperor of Samarkland to write this wonderful combination of history and travelogue. The name of the last great warlord conjures up images of mystery and romance: medieval warfare on desert plains; the clash of swords on snow-clad mountains; the charge of elephants across the steppes of Asia; the legendary opulence and cruelty of the illiterate, chess-playing nemesis of Asia. He ranks alongside Alexander as one of the world's great conquerors, yet the details of his life are scarcely known in the West. He was not born to a distinguished family, nor did he find his apprenticeship easy - at one point his mobile army consisted only of himself, his wife, seven companions and four horses - but his dominion grew with astonishing rapidity. In the last two decades of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth, he blazed through Asia. Cities were razed to the ground, inhabitants tortured without mercy, sometimes enemies were buried alive - more commonly they were decapitated. On the ruins of Baghdad, Tamerlane had his princes erect a pyramid of 90,000 heads. During his lifetime he sought to foster a personal myth, exaggerating the difficulties of his youth, laying claim to supernatural powers and a connection to Genghis Khan. This myth was maintained after his death in legend, folklore, poetry, drama and even opera, nowhere more powerfully than in Marlowe's play - he is now as much a literary construct as a historical figure. Justin Marozzi follows in his path and evokes his legacy in telling the tale of this fabulously cruel, magnificent and romantic warrior.

This book is essentially a fable, beginning in the vague mists of time with the Kikuyu creation myth and progressing through the formation and eventual collapse of its resulting society. Many of its elements resonate in creation myths worldwide. Gikuyu and Mumbi serve in very much the same capacity as do Adam and Eve. The symbolic warrior, manifested as Macharia, becomes an inquiring spirit. What he is going to learn is that he must look on himself as a man of the world, not as someone who is always looking back to his origins in the primeval cave. He turns into a man, which means that he must stop thinking of himself simply as a Kikuyu. In this way, as in many others, his story mirrors our own... Discover the fascinating culture of the Kikuyu, lyrically and beautifully narrated in From Beneath the Tree of Life. In doing so, you may deepen your understanding of your self, your people and the world we live in. Reuel Mugo Gatheru, M.A., J.D., originally from Kenya, was a Professor at California State University, Sacramento, where he taught the history of Africa and the Middle East from 1969 until his retirement in 2002. His previous book, A Child of Two Worlds, was published in London in 1964 by Routledge. He and his wife live in Sacramento, California and have two daughters and two granddaughters.

Sudden Dawn NBN TRADESELECT

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This sweeping epic novel will be hard to put down. A Sudden Dawn is engaging to the very end, even if you don't know anything about Buddhism, martial arts, Zen or life in the early century of A.D. 500. Sardili, born of the warrior caste, would rather seek enlightenment rather than follow his family's military legacy and sets out on a lifelong quest for truth and wisdom. This exceptional tale is about the adventures of Sardili who becomes the Buddhist monk, Bodhidharma. In China he is known as Da Mo. He and his companion Brother Ko journey from India to China in pursuit of good over evil and finding The Way. Their perseverance brings Zen and martial arts to the Shaolin Temple in China. The author, Goran Powell, has done an excellent research job and has developed characters so vivid they flow out of the book. En route, the pair encounters solders and the foot chase through the market place is more realistic than any movie car scene. A generous river captain offers to take them further along the Yangtze and the author paints a vivid picture of the boat snaking through the twelve mountains to Wu Gorge. It's more than a physical journey as Powell beautifully describes Da Mo's love affair with silk farm lady, Madame Wang, and Brother Ko's love for Liang, the maid at the Emperor's palace. It's a gripping story from beginning to end as the legend of Da Mo comes to life and ends really with a beginning.

Constantine the Emperor - 2837511781

Constantine the Emperor Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This year Christians worldwide will celebrate the 1700th anniversary of Constantine's conversion and victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. No Roman emperor had a greater impact on the modern world than did Constantine. The reason is not simply that he converted to Christianity but that he did so in a way that brought his subjects along after him. Indeed, this major new biography argues that Constantine's conversion is but one feature of a unique administrative style that enabled him to take control of an empire beset by internal rebellions and external threats by Persians and Goths. The vast record of Constantine's administration reveals a government careful in its exercise of power but capable of ruthless, even savage actions. Constantine executed (or drove to suicide) his father-in-law, two brothers-in-law, his eldest son, and his once beloved wife. An unparalleled general throughout his life, even on his deathbed he was planning a major assault on the Sassanian Empire in Persia. Alongside the visionary who believed that his success came from the direct intervention of his God resided an aggressive warrior, a sometimes cruel partner, and an immensely shrewd ruler. These characteristics combined together in a long and remarkable career, which restored the Roman Empire to its former glory. Beginning with his first biographer Eusebius, Constantine's image has been subject to distortion. More recent revisions include John Carroll's view of him as the intellectual ancestor of the Holocaust (Constantine's Sword) and Dan Brown's presentation of him as the man who oversaw the reshaping of Christian history (The Da Vinci Code). In Constantine the Emperor, David Potter confronts each of these skewed and partial accounts to provide the most comprehensive, authoritative, and readable account of Constantine's extraordinary life.

British Comics REAKTION BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

British Comics is a unique cultural history of British comic papers and magazines, from their origins in the late nineteenth century to the present day. It shows how comics were transformed in the early twentieth century from adult amusement to imaginative reading matter for children, and relates the rise of the major comic publishers and the emergence of the mighty duopoly of Amalgamated Press and D.C.Thomson that would dominate the industry for half a century. Beginning with the first British comic 'superstar', Ally Sloper - 'A Selection, Side-splitting, Sentimental, and Serious, for the Benefit of Old Boys, Young Boys, Odd Boys generally and even Girls' - whose various misadventures reflected the emergence of a middle-class leisure economy in the late nineteenth century, British Comics goes on to describe the heyday of comics in the 1950s and '60s, when titles such as School Friend and Eagle sold a million copies a week, and analyses the major genres including schoolgirl fantasies, sport and war stories for boys. The author charts the development of a new breed of violent comics in the 1970s, including the controversial Action and 2000AD, and also considers the attempt of an American comic publisher, Marvel, to launch a new hero for the British market in the form of Captain Britain. He goes on to document the appearance in the 1980s and '90s of adult-oriented comics such as Warrior, Crisis, Deadline and Revolver and alternative comics such as Viz, and concludes by considering the work of important contemporary comic writers including Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Ian Edginton, Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis. British Comics explains what children and adults thought of their comics and why some titles prospered while others failed, and also maps the changing structure of the comic publishing industry and how comic publishers, writers and artists have responded to the tastes of their consumers. Ultimately, the book argues that British comics are a distinctive kind of publishing that is different from (and certainly not inferior to) American, French and Japanese comics. An invaluable reference for comics collectors and fans world-wide, British Comics is a fascinating and thorough history that showcases the major role that comics have played in the imaginative lives of British juveniles - and some adults.
