Final Testament Of The Holy Bible JOHN MURRAY PUBLISHERS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A signed, numbered edition, that is slipcased, with head and tail bands, ribbon marker and limited to 1,000 copies James Frey isn't like other writers. He's been called a liar. A cheat. A con man. He's been called a saviour. A revolutionary. A genius. He's been sued by readers. Dropped by publishers because of his controversies. Berated by TV talk-show hosts and condemned by the media. He's been exiled from America, and driven into hiding. He's also a bestselling phenomenon. Published in 38 languages, and beloved by readers around the world. What scares people about Frey is that he plays with truth; that fine line between fact and fiction. Now he has written his greatest work, his most revolutionary, his most controversial. The Final Testament of the Holy Bible. What would you do if you discovered the Messiah were alive today? Living in New York. Sleeping with men. Impregnating young women. Euthanizing the dying, and healing the sick. Defying the government, and condemning the holy. What would you do if you met him? And he changed your life. Would you believe? Would you? The Final Testament of the Holy Bible . It will change you. Hurt you. Scare you. Make you think differently. Live differently. Enrage you. Offend you. Open your eyes to the world in which we live. We've waited 2,000 years for the Messiah to arrive. We've waited 2,000 years for this book to be written. He was here. The Final Testament of the Holy Bible is the story of his life.

Excerpt from The Annotated Bible: The Holy Scriptures Analysed and Annotated Verses 5-6. There was at once a response from the heads of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites. What joy must have filled their hearts when they read the proclamation of Cyrus: What they had longed and prayed for had come at last. God was acting in their behalf and His promises were about to come to pass. It was the Lord who stirred them to action and to turn their faces towards Jerusalem. But not all were ready to go back. Things a Computer Scientist Rarely Talks about Centre for the Study of Language & Information

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

How does a computer scientist understand infinity? What can probability theory teach us about free will? Can mathematical notions be used to enhance one's personal understanding of the Bible? This book contains six informal lectures by computer scientist Donald E. Knuth exploring the relationship between his vocation and his faith, revealing the unique perspective that his work with computing has lent to his understanding of God. Knuth's starting point is his 3:16 project, an application of mathematical "random sampling" to the books of the Bible. The first lectures tell the story of the project's conception and execution, exploring the complex dimensions of language translation, aesthetics, and theological history. Knuth also reveals the many insights that he has gained along the way from such interdisciplinary work. The theological musings culminate in a final lecture which tackles infinity, free will, and the other "big questions" that lie at the juncture of theology and computation. Each lecture ends with a question and answer exchange.

Swearing is a fascinating thing. Almost everyone does it, or worries about not doing it, from the two year old who has just discovered the power of the potty mouth to the grandma who wonders why every other word she hears is obscene. But more than its cultural ubiquity, swearing is also interesting for what it tells us about language and society, today and in the past. It is a record of what people care about on the deepest levels of a culture- what's divine, what's terrifying, and what's taboo. Holy Sh*t tells the story of two kinds of swearing - obscenities and oaths - from ancient Rome and the Bible to today. With humor and insight, Melissa Mohr takes readers on a journey to discover how 'swearing' has come to include both testifying to the truth with your hand on the Bible and calling someone a *#$&!* when they cut you off on the highway. Mohr explores obscenities in ancient Rome-remarkably similar to some of the things you might hear on the street today-and unearths the history of religious oaths in the Middle Ages, when swearing was a matter of life and death. Holy Sh*t also explains the advancement of civility and corresponding censorship of language in the 18th century; considers the rise of racial slurs after World War II; and answers a question that preoccupies the FCC, the U.S. Senate, and anyone who has overheard little kids at a playground recently-are we swearing more now than people did in the past? A gem of lexicography and cultural history, Holy Sh*t is a serious exploration of obscenity - and might just expand your repertoire of words to choose from the next time you shut your finger in the car door.

Holy Land? draws us into the evocative landscape of the Holy Land itself. Sacred yet scarred, the lands of the Bible stimulate us to think about a range of issues that are both urgent and timeless. In Jerusalem, 'a veritable melting pot of cultures', we meditate on the question, 'What is home?' At the River Jordan, where John the Baptist delivered his radical call to repentance and baptism, we ask, 'Who am I?' In the cave of Christ's burial and resurrection in the Holy Sepulchre, we wonder, 'How can I face the darkness?' Confronted by the vast desolation of the desert, we cry, 'Dare I be alone with God?' And negotiating the obstacle-strewn Road to Emmaus, we consider, 'Am I ready for change?' Holy Land? will benefit those preparing to undertake a physical pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and those seeking a spiritual resource to deepen the life of faith and discipleship.

God Almighty said in Exodus 20:7 (KJV) "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes His name in vain." In the reverent attempt to make sure no one ever breaks this vital commandment, the Jewish rabbis decided thousands of years ago not to ever pronounce God's Sacred Name which in Hebrew is spelled YHVH. In place of His Name, they decided to say "Adonai" or "HaShem" ("The Name" in Hebrew). May God bless them for so carefully and reverently obeying His command. Jewish people still follow this custom today. Bible translators do also. They replace God's Name with "LORD" in all capital letters (as in the verse above). In fact, the adherence to this Rabbinical rule has been so complete that the correct pronunciation of the Almighty's Awesome, Sacred Name has been lost. No one today knows for sure how it was pronounced. We wonder, is that what the Creator of the Universe had in mind? Does He really never want to hear His Name on our lips, if spoken with great reverence and awe? He put His Name in the Bible almost 7000 times. David, "a man after God's own heart," wrote this Sacred, Hebrew Name almost 800 times in the Psalms, most likely also pronouncing it when he recited, prayed, or sang those psalms to YHVH. It is a beautiful blessing just to see the Hebrew Sacred Name throughout the Scriptures-a feast for our eyes and souls and spirits. Maybe someday we will also have the blessing to know how to proclaim His Name aloud in power, sing His Name lovingly in praise, and call upon His Sacred Name sincerely in supplication. However, since HaShem allowed the sound of His Name to be lost, perhaps He wants it spoken only in private truly reverently. Two most likely pronunciations put forth by Hebrew scholars are: "Yehovah" or "Yahoveh." It is not pronounced "Jehovah" because there is no "j" sound in Hebrew. It is not "Yahweh" because there is no "w" sound in Hebrew. (Although some say that in ancient Hebrew, there was a sound somewhere between a "w" and a "v".) May ADONAI Himself reveal, if He wills, how to say---in secret prayer and worship time---with all respect, honor, and reverence---His Most Holy, powerful Name. There is so much deep meaning and beauty in the Sacred Name, YHVH. There is the meaning of existing, of breath, and of past, present, and future. And when you look at the meanings of the individual Hebrew letters of YHVH, there is something very astounding. Hebrew letters were originally pictographs, each one having a meaning. The Hebrew "Y" has the underlying meaning of "hand," the background meaning of the "H" is "window" or "behold." The "V" was originally a picture of tent peg or a nail. Put this together, and it says "hand, behold, nail, behold." Since the Hebrew grammar is often backwards from English, we can turn that around to say: "Behold the hand, behold the nail." Doesn't that just give you revelation chills of awe? May the LORD keep on revealing to us more and more about His Sacred Hebrew Name. Find out something similarly astounding about our Messiah and Savior's Sacred Hebrew Name, Yeshua, in this Bible and on Olive Press Publisher's website. You will be so amazed. This Bible uses the King James Version with only these changes: &a

People's Dictionary of the Bible Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from People's Dictionary of the Bible: Describing Persons, Places, Countries, Customs, Birds, Animals, Trees, Plants, Books, Events, and Many Other Things in Holy Scripture This work has been prepared for the multitude who want a comprehensive, concise, handy Dictionary of the Bible for Twenty-five cents. Bulky, learned, expensive, denominational, controversial, and theological dictionaries are abundant. But Bible readers, lay missionaries, members of Christian Endeavor Societies, guilds, leagues. King's Daughters, Sunday-schools and other organizations helpful to the young are often at a loss in their labors, from the lack of an inexpensive Bible Dictionary fairly abreast of present Biblical Scholarship, and free from denominational bias, technical theological terms, unsound teachings, and lengthy discussions - a dictionary for handy and quick reference. This work is for them. Some Christian friends who felt the need of such a work, urged the Editor to prepare it, and generously provided the funds to pay the cost of its preparation and donated the plates to the American Sunday-School Union, so that this Dictionary might be sold at a price that would encourage a large distribution of it, and put it within the reach of all. The following principles have guided in the preparation of the work: 1. To present the results of the best scholarly information in respect to persons, places, customs, and subjects mentioned in the Bible, in alphabetical order and in a simple and concise style. 2. To define such words and topics only as are found in the English Bible, and to give an explanation of any peculiar use or meaning of them. 3. To admit no name or word, about which nothing is known except the mere mention of it in the Bible. 4. Carefully to exclude whatever would be regarded as sectarian or denominational by any body of Evangelical Christians. It is needless to add that this did not exclude any Bible terms. 5. To give the pronunciation and meaning of names and titles. Special attention has been given to some marked fulfilments of prophecy. The Appendix contains a list of parables and miracles in the Bible, tables of time, weights, measures, distances, and moneys, a list of obsolete words found in the Authorized Version, and of the titles and names of Christ, a list of stations in the Journeyings of Israel, and valuable Chronological tables. The Editor has made free use especially of the geographical articles which he contributed to Schaff's "Dictionary of the Bible." Bible History Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Bible History: With Maps, Illustrations, Examination Questions, Scriptural Tables, and Glossary; For the Use of Colleges, Schools, Families, and Biblical Students Had I not seen many deficiencies in the Bible histories which have issued from the Catholic Press, I could not have been induced to write the present work. There is a sad desideratum common to them in the absence of information about the Bible itself, its writers, and the books of which it is composed. Fully one-half of the sacred volume is devoted to the doctrines, laws, discipline, and destiny of God's people. That portion of the Bible is the more important, both because its direct aim is the inculcation of faith and morals, and since, according to high authority, the Spirit of God was not accredited to the sacred writers as mere chroniclers of human affairs. A book which is based on the annals of the Hebrew nation and the records of primeval Christianity, and which omits the main work of the Holy Spirit, the Author of the sacred books, seems foreign to the scope of the Bible, and presents an historical edifice of a miraculous character without showing the foundation on which that structure stands. The Bible is a letter of the Almighty to the human race. Is it proper to dwell upon only a portion of that letter, and pass by in silence its Author and history? Besides, history, whether it be of the Synagogue or the Church, of the Greeks or the Romans, should be so written as not to break the flow of the narrative by the introduction of matter whose importance is not as great as that of the historical subject. "The Passion of the Christ" was an extraordinary media event. But the film has also, and more importantly, been a religious phenomenon. Mel Gibson's professed intent was to create not just a cinematic experience but a spiritual one. And he has succeeded for many moviegoers, most notably evangelical Christians, of whom millions have embraced the film as a presentation of Holy Scripture, a twenty-first-century incarnation of the Word. In this volume, biblical scholars Timothy K. Beal and Tod Linafelt - along with an esteemed group of contributors - offer a provocative range of views on "The Passion of the Christ". The book is organized in three parts. The first analyzes the film in terms of its religious foundations, including the Gospels and nonbiblical religious texts: What are the film's literary sources and how does it use them? In what ways does the medium of film require a radically different way of representing gospel narrative? The second group of essays focuses on the ethical and theological implications of the film's presentation of the Christian gospel: What do we make of its representations of female sexuality? What are the implications of focusing on the Passion in terms of atonement rather than social justice? Finally, the third section explores the film as a pop cultural phenomenon: How has the film worked to create a sense of insider status for some and alienated so many others? What can we learn about the religious dimensions of contemporary mass culture from the film's reception? Whether one is inspired or appalled by "The Passion of the Christ", there can be no question that it is a defining moment in the cultural afterlife of the Bible. This volume tries to make sense of that moment and will prove to be a touchstone for adherents and detractors of the film alike.

Heare, O heavens, and give eare, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken; I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The oxe knoweth his owner, and the asse his masters cribbe: but Israel doeth not know, my people doeth not consider. Ah sinnefull nation, a people laden with iniquitie, a seede of evill doers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy one of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. Why should yee be stricken any more? yee will revolt more and more: the whole head is sicke, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foote, even unto the head, there is no soundnesse in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not beene closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with oyntment. Your countrey is desolate, your cities are burnt with fire: your land, strangers devoure it in your presence, and it is desolate as overthrowen by strangers. And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged citie. Except the Lord of hostes had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have beene as Sodom, and we should have bene like unto Gomorrah. The Holy Bible: The Final Testament The Number of the Beast This book is the result of years of work by Japanese cryptologists seeking to uncover the hidden secrets of the Bible by cracking the codes hidden therein. By analyzing the GOOD NEWS VERSION OF THE BIBLE (which is vastly different from the King James Version) especially the Book of Numbers, but also the books of Joshua, Judges, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Samuel, Leviticus and Genesis, the researchers found mathematical puzzles embedded in them. The puzzles take the form of the famous SEND MORE MONEY problem, in which the equation SEND + MORE = MONEY must be solved by substituting a number for each letter. The solution, which should take about 30 minutes to find, is 9567+1085=10652. However, the researchers found more difficult problems embedded in the Book of Numbers involving multiplication and division which are so difficult that only a computer can solve them. There are 242 problems, the most complete collection of this sort of problem ever produced. All of these problems have a unique solution, but none have ever previously been solved. The quotes from the Good News Bible seem shocking but they are all real and exact quotes. They are not the passages your Sunday morning preacher reads. It is the best collection of this sort of quote. International Sign of the Beast Number ISBN 1-881373-00-2
