Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: America Lingk'un, A. D., 1809-1865 In 1831 he took another flatboat to New Orleans, for Denton Offutt; and on his return attended to the latter's store in New Salem, Menard county, where he employed his abundant leisure in studying surveying and the principles of law. Next year came the Black Hawk Indian war. Lincoln at once enlisted, and was made captain, but served in that capacity only about a month, when his company was mustered out of service. He immediately joined another company, however, as private; and served without any notable experiences, until finally mustered out a few weeks later, 1832, June 16. Returning home, he entered on a late and hasty canvass for the Legislature, announcing his platform thus: "I presume you all known who I am; I am humble Abraham Lincoln. I have been solicited by my many friends to become a candidate for the Legislature. My politics are short and sweet, like the old woman's dance. I am in favor of a national bank; I am in favor of internal improvements, and a high protective tariff. These are my sentiments and political principles. If elected, I shall be thankful; if not, it will be all the same." He was defeated, though his own neighborhood voted for him almost unanimously. Thereupon he entered into partnership with another man in the grocery and dry goods business in New Salem. His partner was worthless, and the firm failed, Lincoln being left with the indebtedness of the concern resting upon him. By frugality and hard work he paid it off entirely in a few years. He next took to studying law, and then to surveying. In 1833 he was appointed postmaster of New Salem, with a beggarly salary but plenty of time for reading and study. He held the office for three years, being at the same time also deputy for the county surveyor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Abraham Lincoln Campfire

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Born to illiterate parents in the untamed frontiers of America and raised with virtually no formal education, Abraham Lincoln often questioned his future. But he took comfort in knowing that he at least had the freedom to choose his own path in life. Freedom, he believed, was a precious thing, and he was certain that no man had a right to enslave another. Unfortunately, not everyone in America shared that belief. In the mid-19th century, America was a nation with more than four million slaves; it was a nation that had lost its moral compass; a nation desperate for a leader to step forward. That leader was Abraham Lincoln. Thrust into the national spotlight when his conscience would not let him turn away from injustice, Abraham Lincoln took control of a shattered nation at the cusp of a civil war. And he helped ensure that the idea of freedom for all did not perish from the earth.

American journalist and statesman JOHN MILTON HAY (1838-1905) was only 22 when he became a private secretary to Lincoln. A former member of the Providence literary circle when he attended Brown University in the late 1850s, he may have been the real author of Lincoln's famous "Letter to Mrs. Bixby." After Lincoln's death, Hay later served as editor of the *New York Tribune* and as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom under President William McKinley. American author JOHN GEORGE NICOLAY (1832-1901) was born in Germany and emigrated to the U.S. as a child. Before serving as Lincoln's private secretary, he worked as a newspaper editor and later as assistant to the secretary of state of Illinois. He also wrote *Campaigns of the Civil War* (1881).

Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address": The Rhetoric of American Civil Religion GRIN Verlag

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Rhetoric / Elocution / Oratory, printed single-sided, grade: 1,3, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, course: Allgemeine Rhetorik, language: English, abstract: Abraham Lincoln s Gettysburg Address has played a powerful role in shaping American public discourse over the centuries. It has become one of the central documents in the evolution of American civil religion imbued with religious and biblical language and imagery, backed by the ethos of its orator, its rhetoric sanctifies the founding documents and itself becomes part of the canon of holy writ of American civil religion. This is all the more remarkable considering the fact that Lincoln was originally only supposed to deliver a few appropriate remarks at the dedication of the Gettysburg battlefield as a cemetery for the fallen soldiers. The main speaker, Edward Everett, had already given a long speech when Lincoln s turn came. The situation which thus presented itself to the orator posed a considerable challenge, as the audience was already weary. It is therefore all the more fascinating to see how Lincoln succeeded in his short, dense speech which did not even give the photographer sufficient time to take his picture in molding American identity by fusing organic union with transcendent purpose by utilizing the religious symbolism of the Christian tradition (White 97).This paper will examine how the Gettysburg Address came to be one of the central documents of American civil religion, which had a significant influence on all future public discourse.First, it will provide a brief discussion of Abraham Lincoln as an orator. This aspect is important insofar as it is necessary to determine what role his personal ethos played in the Gettysburg Address. The main part will offer a close reading of the Gettysburg Address, focusing on an in-depth analysis of the rhetorical strategies and stylistic devices Lincoln employs. This part is concerned especially with the question of how these strategies contribute to the enduring significance of the Gettysburg Address as a central document of American civil religion.

In the first multi-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln to be published in decades, Lincoln scholar Michael Burlingame offers a fresh look at the life of one of America's greatest presidents. Incorporating the field notes of earlier biographers, along with decades of research in multiple manuscript archives and long-neglected newspapers, this remarkable work will both alter and reinforce current understanding of America's sixteenth president. In volume 2, Burlingame examines Lincoln's presidency and the trials of the Civil War. He supplies fascinating details on the crisis over Fort Sumter and the relentless office seekers who plagued Lincoln. He introduces readers to the president's battles with hostile newspaper editors and his quarrels with incompetent field commanders. Burlingame also interprets Lincoln's private life, discussing his marriage to Mary Todd, the untimely death of his son Willie to disease in 1862, and his recurrent anguish over the enormous human costs of the war.
