Judgment According to Works in Romans - 2854327087

Judgment According to Works in Romans Fortress Press,U.S.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Giving careful exegetical attention to Paul's letter to the Romans, Kevin W. McFadden shows that Paul wrote the letter to remind Roman Christians of his gospel because of his vocation as apostle to the Gentiles. The letter simultaneously demonstrates the guilt of the world and calls Paul's audience to live out the implications of the gospel. The theme of judgment thus appears in two distinct ways. Paul opposes justification by works of law, but simultaneously affirms - - as did most of the early Christian movement, McFadden argues - - a final judgment according to works. These are not contradictory observations but belong together in a cohesive understanding of Paul's theology and of his purpose in the letter. McFadden turns at last to the implications of his study for a reassessment of Protestant interpretation of Paul, and of the present impasse in interpretation caused by hasty or inexact generalizations made within the "New Perspective."

Passion According to Luke Bloomsbury Academic

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The goal of this redaction-critical investigation is to determine what in Luke 22 is special to Luke, to assess its origin, and to uncover Luke's purpose in using this material. Unlike earlier studies, Soards concentrates on lines of thought that link the chapter with the Gospel as a whole. The author's conclusion is that though Luke did not use a single coherent source other than Mark for this chapter, his diverse material was chosen in order to advance Luke's distinctive interests in Christology, eschatology and ecclesiology. Christologically, Jesus is shown as in charge of the Passion events and as the realization of a divine plan; eschatologically, the Passion is portrayed as inaugurating the era of the Last Days; ecclesiologically, Jesus's attitude to his disciples functions as instruction for Luke's readers about their role in God's plan.

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

Johann Sebastian Bach?s stature as a composer of extraordinary talent and widespread influence is so firmly established in Western culture that it is difficult to believe that only 150 years ago his works lay in veritable obscurity, unknown to all but a small group of scholars. It is largely thanks to ohn, who essentially effected a revival of the composer?s music through his rediscovery and promulgation of the St Matthew Passion, besides other pieces, that his works are today regarded as pinnacles of music expression. That they are among the most performed and widely attended is in no doubt; in Holland alone, thousands of singers and musicians are involved in dozens of performances of the St Matthew Passion in Holy Week, with hundreds of thousands listening in churches and concert halls, or gathered around the radio, to what has been described as ?the Gospel according to Bach?.Bringing together all of his works, this dynamic 142-CD set offers a resounding impression of this great spirit of our Western culture, presenting dynamic performances ? many period-based, many acclaimed by the international press ? that are divided according to genre, thus making for a highly user-friendly compendium. The set draws on all periods of his career, tracing the development of a style that was much influenced by contemporary and past fashions but which was always adapted to Bach?s own purpose, often far surpassing the models on which he drew. The German composer travelled a great deal from city to city, and the different circumstances of his various positions are reflected in the great range of works comprising his output: while his early years are dominated by much keyboard music, on account of the numerous organist posts he held during this period, later positions at various courts accorded him more personal and artistic freedom ? in Cöthen, for example, Prince Leopold?s passion for music-making and his renowned resident orchestra resulted in a string of unforgettable works including the Brandenburg Concertos, the Solo Cello Suites and the Well-Tempered Clavier Part 1, beside many others.Bach was a master of all genres, whether sacred, secular, instrumental or vocal, and his oeuvre is a rich mixture of severe Baroque craftsmanship and expressive Romanticism. Thomas Zehetmair, Kristóf Baráti, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, René Jacobs, Peter Schreier and Lucia Popp are just a handful of the first-class performers and ensembles gracing this set. At the bargain price of ?100, it is a collection not to be passed up.Other information:- 142 CDs representing the entirety of Johann Sebastian Bach?s oeuvre in historically informed performances. Description: Paul's letter to Titus is one of the most neglected letters of the New Testament. Many have contended that it is an incoherent letter devoid of a theological message and purpose. This study proposes otherwise, presenting an entirely new structure for Titus that demonstrates how the theme "Exhort and Reprove to Commendable Works according to the Hope of Eternal Life" unfolds through the chiastic structures in the letter. Jeon not only demonstrates the unity of the letter but also invites the reader to explore other ways chiasms can be used to enhance New Testament interpretation. Any intrigued by Titus, and the Pastoral Letters as a whole, will discover herein a unique approach to the letter and a fresh and invigorating interpretation of its underlying message. Endorsements: "Jeon offers a new proposal for the overall structure of this often neglected letter, taking account of all the details of the text to demonstrate not only its comprehensive unity, but the rhetorical power of its chiastic structures. Highly recommended for all students of the Pauline Letters." --John Paul Heil, The Catholic University of America "Jeon provides a helpful resource for studies in the Book of Titus. He not only succeeds in presenting a persuasive case for the chiastic structure of this epistle, he also integrates this literary structure with the apostle's overall message: namely, to exhort and reprove according to the hope of eternal life. This book will enhance the library of any pastor as well as add to scholarly discussions in Pauline studies." --Peter Lee, Reformed Theological Seminary "Jeon has done a marvelous job in bringing a fresh and clear perspective on the book of Titus. His clear writing and persuasive arguments for the chiastic structure of Titus are convincing and moving. To Exhort and Reprove should be required for any serious scholar, pastor, or layperson who desires to understand and appreciate the letter of Titus." --Benjamin C. Shin, Talbot School of Theology at Biola University "On the basis of a close reading of the Letter to Titus, Jeon uncovers the chiastic structure of this letter, thereby clarifying its purpose and meaning for the general reader as well as for specialists in Pauline studies. Readers of his work will benefit from and appreciate his close exegesis of the text." --Frank J. Matera, The Catholic University of America About the Contributor(s): PAUL S. JEON (PhD, Catholic University of America) is visiting professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary (DC), an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church in America, and lead pastor of NewCity Church. Plauti Bacchides Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Plauti Bacchides: Edited, With Introduction, Commentary, and Critical Notes (1) Plautus sc. Plotus (an Umbrian word, meaning "flat-footed"), full name Marcus Accius Plautus, or Titus Maccius Plautus, the most famous of the Latin Comic poets, and by far the greater of the two whose Comedies we possess, died, according to Cicero (Brut. xv. 60), in the Consulship of P.Claudius and L. Porcius, Cato being Censor, which was the year B.C. 184. If we follow Ritschl, who has investigated the subject at considerable length, and who holds the opinion that the poet was about thirty years of age before he brought out his first Comedy, he must have been born in B.C. 254. By this calculation Plautus would be seventy years of age at his death; and it is very probably correct, seeing that Cicero (De Senect. xiv. 50) classes him amongst the old men, and mentions that the poet was greatly delighted with his Pseudulus, a reference which would have no meaning had that Comedy not been written when he was at least sixty years of age - an old man. In reference to the age of Plautus at the time he began to write Comedies, we have a passage from Gellius (iii. 3), in which he states that Varro and others have handed down that the poet, after having first amassed money as a stage decorator, or actor's assistant("in operis artificum scenicorum"), and then, having engaged in trade in which he lost it all, came to Rome, and was obliged to hire his services to a miller ('ad circumagendas molas, quae trusatiles appelantur") for the purpose of obtaining a means of living. The time in which he was engaged in these several occupations must have extended over a considerable period of his early life; therefore, we may fairly conclude that the poet could hardly be less than thirty years of age when he began to write. Unlike Terence, who was a slave, and obtained his freedom and a good education at the expense of his master, Plautus, we are told, was the son of free-born, but poor, parents belonging to Sarsina, a small town of Umbria; of his education, except from his Comedies, we know nothing. We can, however, say that he was well versed in his own language, and must have known Greek and Phoenician, if we take Poenelus v. 1, 2 as a specimen of that language. (2) Varro, rir Romanorum eruditissimus, peritissimus linguoe Latina, made a selection of twenty-one Comedies, all of which we possess except the Vidularia, which was lost sometime between the sixth and eleventh centuries, from the great mass of Comedies found in the Indices of the old literati, Stilo, Sedigitus, Claudius, Aurelius, Accius, and Manlius. Gellius (iii. 3) says that as many as 130 were known as "Plautinć" in the time of Varro; and Servius in his Commentary on the Ćneid mentions 100. (See Sec. 9.) Ritschl gives us the names of nineteen others mentioned by Varro as "Plautinć," which he arranges in a second class, because, we suppose, they have been rewritten, remodelled or revised by others after the death of the poet; or it may be that they were written by some old poet and afterwards revised by Plautus. Meaning and Structure - 2839141697

Meaning and Structure Ashgate Publishing Limited

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Jaroslav Peregrin explores the relationship between meaning and structure, taking as his starting point an introduction to the aspects of the Saussurean legacy that he feels are crucial in this endeavour and can be seen as congenial to the views of language entertained by the "postanalytic" philosophers. To show the compatibility of de Saussure's structuralism to the theses of analytical philosophy, he outlines the similarities between de Saussure's account of "linguistic reality" with Gottlob Frege's account of the nature of abstract entities. Peregrin claims that, as structure is a way in which some parts are organized into a whole, we need a theory of systems of parts and wholes. He considers the theory proposed for this purpose by Stanislaw Lesniewski but concludes that this theory is not exactly what is needed, and he offers a sketch of a more suitable mathematical theory. He then tries to make a mathematical sense of the Saussurean idea of the birth of "the structural" out of oppositions. In the second part of the book, Peregrin turns his attention to the postanalytic philosophers whose views of language he wants to portray as continuous with de Saussure's teaching. He studies the views of Willard Van Orman Quine, whose widely discussed indeterminacy theses can be read as simply pointing out the structural nature of language. Peregrin finds that Quine's holism, with which he replaces the atomism of his analytic predecessors, is nothing other than a form of structuralism. He next considers Donald Davidson's insight that the opposition which is crucial from the viewpoint of meaning is that between truth and falsity. The view of language originally put forward by Wilfrid Sellars and developed by Robert Brandom is scrutinized to reveal that, according to Brandom, language is first and foremost our means of engaging in the practice of giving and asking for reasons. Hence, Peregrin interprets, language's statements are useful only in so far as they are interrelated with other statements, as they can be used as reasons for other statements or be justified by means of other statements. In the third part of the book, Peregrin summarizes the outcome of the previous considerations by claiming that the structure of language that is constitutive of its semantics is the "inferential structure", and that the meaning of an expression is most adequately identified with its inferential role. He goes on to consider the general relationship between the realm of formal structures and models (such as those dealt with by formal semantics) and that of real phenomena (such as our natural language). In the final chapter, Peregrin challenges some common wisdoms regarding "semantic structures" or "logical forms" of expression, and tries to show that from the vantage point presented in his book, both the concept of "logical form" as developed by Chomsky and his followers, and that as developed by the logicians following Russell, are problematic.

Lectures on the History of Philosophy, Volume 1 University of Nebraska Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"Hegel's Geschichte der Philosophie was one of the grand products of the renaissance in historical learning that took place in early nineteenth-century Germany...Hegel remains relevant today for his recognition that any self-critical philosophy must include a knowledge of its own history. A self-aware philosopher, Hegel firmly believed, knew where his ideas came from and their social and cultural context...This is still the only available translation of all three volumes of Hegel's history."--Frederick C. Beiser. "The main reason why Hegel will remain worthy of study lies in his incomparable gathering together of the whole range of human experience into vital connection with what is best in that experience...He is, without doubt, the Aristotle of our post-Renaissance world."--J. N. Findlay, Hegel: A Re-examination. G. W. F. Hegel (1770-1831), the influential German philosopher, believed that human history was advancing spiritually and morally according to God's purpose. At the beginning of this masterwork, Hegel writes: "What the history of Philosophy shows us is a succession of noble minds, a gallery of heroes of thought, who, by the power of Reason, have penetrated into the being of things, of nature and of spirit, into the Being of God, and have won for us by their labours the highest treasure, the treasure of reasoned knowledge." In his introduction to this Bison Book edition, Frederick C. Beiser notes the complex and controversial history of Hegel's text. He makes a case that this English-language translation by E. S. Haldane and Frances H. Simson is still the most reliable one. A professor of philosophy at Indiana University, Beiser is the author of The Fate of Reason: German Philosophy from Kante to Fichte.

Telemann: 7 Scherzi Melodichi brilliant classics

Nagrania>Nagrania muzyczne

What can one do with the seemingly inexhaustible output of Telemann, beyond perhaps sitting back and enjoying its good humour and melodic fecundity? The conceit behind this little-recorded set of chamber music, first published in Hamburg on 19 June 1734, is the quotidian matter of the days of the week: seven suites, each of seven movements, most of the movements hardly exceeding a couple of minutes, alternating slow ariettas with quick contrapuntal or dance-based pieces, all of which betray an Italian influence on their instrumentation and sunny character.A perfect example of Gebrauchsmusik, the Scherzi were written to entertain the afternoon guests to the Spa of Bad Pyrmont, and Telemann's memoirs as well as his dedication to Karl August Friedrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont, on the works' title page, confirm that he was a regular visitor to this resort. As had been the case for Tafelmusik (1733), perhaps as a means emphasising the character and purpose of the music, Telemann favours the suite form over the four-movement Corellian sonata da chiesa form, which was common in instrumental music at the time. This allowed him to compose with much more freedom of expression, to introduce less clearly defined musical forms and to use elements from folk music, leading to some surprising cadences amid the generally unruffled good humour of the whole set.Ensemble Symposium is an Italian band which uses instruments authentic to the time of composition according to the principles of historically-informed performance.Further information:Recorded in 2013- Georg Philipp Telemann was one of the most famous and respected composers of the Baroque, considered in his time on equal level with his contemporaries Handel and Bach. He is also one of the most prolific composers of all time, excelling in almost every genre. The most astonishing in this is the uniform high quality of his music, always fresh, inventive, and extremely well crafted.- Telemann wrote music for many occasions, so called 'Gebrauchsmusik'. His Scherzi Melodichi were written for the entertainment of the guests of the Spa Bad Pyrmont. Each of the 7 suites, consisting of 7 dance-like movements, is named after a day of the week, each day its own suite. The style is witty and good humoured, aimed at lifting the mood of the possibly bored-to-death audience in the Spa.- The Ensemble Symposium plays with zest and good spirit, using period instruments.- Detailed booklet notes....
