Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Excerpt from Doctor Ox's Experiment If you try to find, on any map of Flanders, ancient or modern, the small town of Quiquendone, probably you will not succeed. Is Quiquendone, then, one of those towns which have disappeared 1 No. A town of the future? By no means. It exists despite geographies, and has existed for some eight or nine hundred years. It even numbers two thousand three hundred and ninety-three souls, if we allow a sold to each inhabitant. It is situated thirteen and a half kilometres northwest of Audenarde, and fifteen and a quarter kilometres southeast of Bniges, in the middle of Flanders. The Vaar, a small tributary of the Escaut, passes beneath its three bridges, which are still covered with a quaint roof of the medićval ages, as at Tournay. As it had been foretold, the armies of the Universe gathered at Trenzalore. Only one thing stood between the planet and destruction - the Doctor. For nine hundred years, he defended the planet, and the tiny town of Christmas, against the forces that would destroy it. Some of what happened during those terrible years is well documented. But most of it has remained shrouded in mystery and darkness. Until now. This is a glimpse of just some of the terrors the people faced, the monstrous threats the Doctor defeated. These are the tales of the monsters who found themselves afraid - and of the one man who was not. (Tales of Trenzalore collects four of the Doctor's adventures from different periods during the Siege of Trenzalore and the ensuing battle: Let it Snow - by Justin Richards An Apple a Day - by George Mann Strangers in the Outland - by Paul Finch The Dreaming - by Mark Morris).

When the Ninth Doctor lands in the town of Kennet, he finds that something is terribly wrong. The people are scared. They don't like going out at night, they don't like making too much noise, and they certainly don't like strangers asking questions. What alien force has invaded the town and why is it watching barmaid Alison Cheney? The Ninth Doctor is sardonic, witty, compassionate, and tired of how foolish humans can be. He has lived through things his predecessors never dreamed of but has difficulty with things that those before him have taken for granted. He has secrets that may put him, Alison, and the whole world in danger. The Doctor is helped by his new military liaison Major Kennet and his Royal Green Jacket troops. Starting with a small community under threat, this Doctor Who story takes in the entire world, from New Zealand to India, Siberia to the USA, and cosmic expanses beyond. It was originally published in 2004.

Bruno Sachs is a country doctor who makes house calls and feels deeply for his patients. There are broken bones, unwanted pregnancies, people without the will to live, a friend dying of cancer. His pity for his fellow creatures is both his motivating force and his own untreatable condition. Among the deaths, love affairs, and small town gossip, a love story emerges at the heart of the novel-between Dr. Sachs and a young woman upon whom he once performed an abortion. The Case of Dr. Sachs is a novel filled with voices of silent suffering and arias of quiet joy, and one dedicated to the notion that literature, like medicine, can save lives.

Adventures of Harry Marline, or Notes from an American Midshipman's Lucky Bag (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Adventures of Harry Marline, or Notes From an American Midshipman's Lucky Bag I was a very small boy when I first made acquaintance with the sea in the year 18 - as a midshipman, and could easily have been stowed away in the pocket of a pea-jacket without any one's knowing I was there. But I was acknowledged by every one to be knowing far beyond my years, and my friends always guaranteed my growth, as we had never known a runt on either side of the family. There were various surmises about my future end; some old fogies about and in the old town of Babel, Pennsylvania, where I was born, shook their heads sorrowfully as they passed me in the street, and predicted that I would end my days on a gallows, while the more charitable said that I would sow my wild oats, and turn out in the long run a clever fellow. I remember that I was the terror of all the inhabitants of Babel, each of whom in turn had suffered from the effects of my mischievous pranks. No mischief was committed in or out of the town but I was sure to be named as the author of it, and I often had the credit of doing things of which I was entirely innocent. Be that as it may, the elders of the town came to the conclusion that I was a perfect nuisancé, and must be got rid of by some means or other. Adventures of Don Quixote De La Mancha (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Adventures of Don Quixote De La Mancha In 1613 he published his twelve Novelas Exemplares, or Exemplary Novels, with a dedication to his\ patron the Count de Lemos. He called them exemplary, because, as he tells us, his other novels had been censured as more satirical than exemplary; which fault he determined to amend in these and therefore each of them contains interwoven in it some error to be avoided, or some virtue to be practised. He asserts that they were entirely his own invention, not borrowed or copied from any other works of the same sort, nor translated from any other language, as was the case with most of the novels which his countrymen had published hitherto. But, notwithstanding this, we cannot fail to remark a strong resemblance in them to the tales of Boccaccio; still they are most excellent in their way, and have always been favourites with the Spanish youth for their interest and pure morality, and their ease and manliness of style. The titles of these novels are, The Little Gipsy, The Generous Lover, Rinconete and Cortadillo, The Spanish English Lady, The Glass Doctor, The Force of Blood, The Jealous Estremadura, The Illustrious servant-maid, The Two Damsels, The Lady Cornelia Bentivoglio, The Deceitful Marriage, and The Dialogue of the Dogs. They have all been translated into English, and are probably not unknown to some of our readers. The next year Cervantes published another small work, entitled the Viage dc Pamasso, or A Journey to Parnassus, which is a playful satire upon the Spanish poets, after the manner of Caesar Caporali's upon the Italian poets under a similar title. It is a good picture of the Spanish literature of his day, and one of the most powerful of his poetical works. It is full of satire, though not ill natured, and there was no man of genius of the time who would complain of being too harshly treated in it. Cervantes introduces himself as the oldest and poorest of all the poetical fraternity, the naked Adam of Spanish poets. The plot of the poem is as follows Apollo wishes to rid Parnassus of the bad poets, and to that end he calls together all the others by a message through Mercury. When all are assembled, he leads them into a rich garden of Parnassus, and assigns to each the place which corresponds to his merits. Poor Cervantes alone does not obtain this distinction, and remains without being noticed in the presence of the rest, before whom all the works he has ever published are displayed. In vain does he urge his love for literature, and the troubles which he had endured for its sake; no seat can he get. At last Apollo, in compassion upon him, advises him to fold up his cloak, and to make that his seat; but, alas, so poor is he that he does not possess such a thing, and so he is obliged to remain standing, in spite of his age, his talents, and the opinion of many who know and confess the honour and position which are his due. The vessel in which this Journey to Parnassus is performed is described in a way quite worthy of Cervantes From topmast to keel it was all of verse 3 not one foot of prose was there in it. The airy railings which fenced the deck were all of double-rhymes. Ballads, an impudent but necessary race, occupied the rowing benches; and rightly, for there is nothing to which they may not be turned. The poop was grand and gay, but somewhat strange in its style, being stuck all over with sonnets of the richest workmanship. The stroke-oars on either side were pulled by two vigorous triplets, which regulated the motion of the vessel in a way both easy and powerful. The gangway was one long and most melancholy elegy, from which tears were continually dropping. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Adventures of Oliver Twist (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Adventures of Oliver Twist Among other public buildings in a certain town, which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, there is one anciently common to most towns, great or small; to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born: on a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events; the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter. For a long time after it was ushered into this world of sorrow and trouble, by the parish surgeon, it remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all; in which case it is somewhat more than probable that these memoirs would never have appeared; or, if they had that being comprised within a couple of pages, they would have possessed the inestimable merit of being the most concise and faithful specimen of biography extant, in the literature of any age or country. 'On my very last day of being 16 years old, I fell through the roof of our barn and broke my leg in three places. I was just in a climbing mood I guess - the kind of mood that can overtake a girl sometimes on a hot July day, thinking that if something glamorous doesn't happen soon, right that minute, she'd go crazy. 'Haley Bombauer, a.k.a 'Flash Jackson' seems doomed to spend the summer in a cast, absolutely bored out of her skull. But in a strange twist of fate, Haley's 'imprisonment' gives her peculiar grandmother the chance finally to see what the girl is made of - and maybe pass on to her some of the mysterious and mystical arts that only she knows. As Haley comes to understand just who her grandmother is, and what the old woman can teach her, she is transformed - from tomboy to extraordinary woman.
