Migrating and Settling in a Mobile World: Albanian Migrants and Their Children in Europe - 2854227539

Migrating and Settling in a Mobile World: Albanian Migrants and Their Children in Europe Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book draws on cross-generational research and compares the ethnic identities, transnational ties and integration pathways of Albanian migrants and Albanian-origin adolescents in three European cities: London, Thessaloniki and Florence. Greece, Italy and the UK are the three main European countries where Albanian migrants have settled during their short but intense migration experience of the past two decades. Building on some major social science and migration studies concepts, such as identity, integration and transnationalism, the book establishes links between these concepts and the newer developing theoretical and conceptual frameworks such as mobility, translocality and cosmopolitanism. It analyses these concepts in the context of migration by taking into account the process of intergenerational transmission and viewing mobility as an inherent characteristic of contemporary lives. One aspect that distinguishes this research from other studies on the second generation in Europe is that, whereas other research has focused on the second generation at an adult age, this book involves a new second generation, or a second generation in-the-making . By studying a settling immigrant group and their descendants, this book takes a proactive approach towards the integration of ethnic minorities. The book ends with a call for a reassessment of the term second generation , drawing attention to the essentialist focus on the children of migrants as a particular and homogeneous group. The findings ultimately show that the particularities of identification, integration and transnational ties of the children of migrants are affected by structural factors and are not inherently idiosyncratic to this group.

It seems that every day there's a new story about a security lapse, emergency lock-down, or violent act taking place at a school somewhere in the United States. Today it's simply inexcusable not to have adequate security measures in place-regardless of how safe you think your community may be. In School Security, author Paul Timm, a nationally acclaimed school security expert, explains how to make your institution a safer place to learn with easy-to-follow steps. Throughout the book, Timm emphasizes a proactive rather than reactive approach to school security. Readers are introduced to basic loss prevention and safety concepts, including how to communicate safety information to students and staff, how to raise security awareness, and how to prepare for emergencies. The book discusses how to positively influence student behavior, lead staff training programs, and write sound security policies. An entire chapter is dedicated to describing what school security resources are available for follow-up reading and further training. School Security isn't just a book for security professionals: it helps people without formal security training-namely, educators and school administrators-effectively address school risk. * Serves as a comprehensive guide for building an effective security program at little or no cost.* Covers fundamental crime prevention concepts, making it suitable for both school security professionals and educators with no formal security training.* Addresses the risks commonly facing school administrators today, from access control to social media.* Takes a holistic approach to school security rather than focusing on a particular threat or event.

How Schools Succeed Rowman & Littlefield Education

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

All meaningful and enduring educational reform occurs locally. Evidence suggests that educational success is driven by the contextual conditions in which students learn. How Schools Succeed: Context, Culture, and Strategic Leadership, Second Edition considers a broad conception of educational context, taking into consideration work environment, facilities, and space as well as the interpersonal, social, and organizational settings in which teaching and learning occur. This is not a "one-fits-all" approach. It is, however, a proactive approach, and necessary tools and development strategies are offered to promote continual and sustainable school improvement at the local level. While this volume considers specific administrative roles in schools, it also explains strategic leadership in broad terms. School leadership not only implies principal and superintendent roles, but teacher roles as well-perceiving teachers as leaders and building leadership capacity are central concepts in understanding strategic leadership as well as moving toward genuine school reform.

Due to the different durability of building structures, the 21st century has become a century of repair work and rehabilitation for construction. Along with the decreasing amount of area zoned for construction, the increase of such activities in inevitable. The world economic crisis continues to hold back new investments and, therefore, also contributes to this situation. Naturally aging building complexes and, unfortunately, more and more frequently new buildings as well, contain design or construction errors. It is best if the mistakes are noticed during the completion of objects, worse if they don't become noticeable until they are under exploitation. The detrimental effect of the natural environment and negative influence of people cannot be ignored. Due to the increasing aggressiveness of environments and natural aging processes of building structures, the necessity to repair and protect them is becoming increasingly common. The beginning of the 21st century is a period of noticeable climate changes, as well as a time of growing global awareness of dangers which, in turn, has led to the dynamic development of building materials and new technologies. Short Guide to Contract Risk Gower Publishing Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Savvy managers no longer look at contracting processes and documents reactively but use them proactively to reach their business goals and minimize their risks. To succeed, these managers need a framework and A Short Guide to Contract Risk provides this. The foundation of identifying and managing contract risk is what the authors call Contract Literacy: a set of skills relevant for all who deal with contracts in their everyday business environment, ranging from general managers and CEOs to sales, procurement and project professionals and risk managers. Contracts play a major role in business success. Contracts govern companies' deals and relationships with their suppliers and customers. They impact future rights, cash flows, costs, earnings, and risks. A company's contract portfolio may be subject to greater losses than anyone realizes. Still the greatest risk in business is not taking any risks. Equipped with the concepts described in this book, business and risk managers can start to see contracts differently and to use them to find and achieve the right balance for business success and problem prevention. What makes this short guide from the authors of the acclaimed Proactive Law for Managers especially valuable, if not unique, is its down-to-earth managerial/legal approach. Using lean contracting, visualization and the tools introduced in this book, managers and lawyers can achieve legally sound contracts that function as managerial tools for well thought-out, realistic risk allocation in business deals and relationships.

Language, Borders and Identity EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Identifying and examining political, socio-psychological and symbolic borders, Language, Borders and Identity encompasses a broad, geographically diverse spectrum of border contexts, taking a multi-disciplinary approach by combining sociolinguistics research with human geography, anthropology and social psychology. The book illustrates a representative range of methodological approaches used by researchers in the field and examines regional and local borders alongside the political borders that divide monoglossic and heteroglossic territories. Using international case studies and examples throughout, this book also looks to symbolic borders, which are often encoded in the semiotic manipulation of the linguistic landscape. It further assesses the linguistic implications of the presence of borders in applied contexts, including language planning and policy (e.g. in multilingual education or for the protection of minority languages) and border control. By casting its net wide, Language, Borders and Identity develops and refines models of how language is used to construct borders, and to indicate on which side of border speakers situate themselves. This book brings into focus the dual reactive and proactive functions that language serves in this respect, exploring the tensions between essentialist and constructionist approaches to identity, and offers a valuable resource for advanced students and researchers in sociolinguistics and the sociology of language.

In this groundbreaking book, Bill Price and David Jaffe offer a new, game-changing approach, showing how managers are taking the wrong path and are using the wrong metrics to measure customer service. Customer service, they assert, is only needed when a company does something wrong--eliminating the need for service is the best way to satisfy customers. To be successful, companies need to treat service as a data point of dysfunction and figure what they need to do to eliminate the demand. The Best Service Is No Service outlines these seven principles to deliver the best service that ultimately leads to "no service": Eliminate dumb contacts Create engaging self-service Be proactive Make it easy to contact your company Own the actions across the company Listen and act Deliver great service experiences

Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil METHUEN DRAMA

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Written during the 1970s, John McGrath's winding, furious, innovative play tracks the economic history and exploitation of the Scottish Highlands from the post-Rebellion suppression of the clans to the story of the Clearances: in the nineteenth century, aristocratic landowners discovered the profitability of sheep farming, and forced a mass emigration of rural Highlanders, burning their houses in order to make way for the Cheviot sheep. The play follows the thread of capitalist and repressive exploitation through the estates of the stag-hunting landed gentry, to the 1970s rush for profit in the name of North Sea Oil. Described by the playwright as having a "ceilidh" format, The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil draws on historical research alongside Gaelic song and the Scots' love of variety and popular entertainment to tell this epic story. A totally distinctive cultural and theatrical phenomenon, the play championed several new approaches to theatre, raising its profile as a means of political intervention; proposing a collective, democratic, collaborative approach to creating theatre; offering a language of performance accessible to working-class people; producing theatre in non-purpose-built theatre spaces; breaking down the barrier between audience and performers through interaction; and taking theatre to people who otherwise would not access it. The play received its premiere in 1973 by the agit-prop theatre group 7:84, of which John McGrath was founder and Artistic Director, and toured Scotland to great critical and audience acclaim.
