Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... 'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning

Opis - Druga powieść z serii "W cieniu podejrzenia". Powieści i opowiadania

Forster's brilliant social comedy is a witty observation of the English middle classes as they holiday abroad in Florence. One of these tourists is Lucy Honeychurch, a young girl whose 'undeveloped heart' is awakened by her experiences in Italy and by her encounter with the unconventional George Emerson. Lucy finds herself torn between un-English passion and stifling Victorian propriety, personified in her pretentious fiancé Cecil Vyse and her dismal cousin Charlotte, until she learns to follow the power of her own heart. It was pleasant to wake up in Florence, to open the eyes upon a bright bare room, with a floor of red tiles which look clean though they are not; with a painted ceiling whereon pink griffins and blue amorini sport in a forest of yellow violins and bassoons. It was pleasant, too, to fling wide the windows, to lean out into sunshine with beautiful hills and trees and marble churches opposite, and close below, the Arno, gurgling against the embankment of the road. An electric tram came rushing underneath the window. No one was inside it, except one tourist; but its platforms were overflowing with Italians, who preferred to stand. Then soldiers appeared - good-looking, undersized men - wearing each a knapsack covered with mangy fur, and a great-coat which had been cut for some larger soldier. Before them went little boys, turning somersaults in time with the band. One of the little boys fell down, and some white bullocks came out of an archway. Over such trivialities as these, many a valuable hour may slip away, and the traveller who has gone to Italy to study the tactile values of Giotto, or the corruption of the Papacy, may return remembering nothing but the blue sky and the men and women who live under it. So it was as well that Miss Bartlett should tap and come in, and having commented on Lucy's leaving the door unlocked, and on her leaning out of the window before she was fully dressed, should urge her to hasten herself, or the best of the day would be gone. By the time Lucy was ready her cousin had done her breakfast, and was listening to the clever lady among the crumbs. A conversation then ensued, on not unfamiliar lines. Miss Bartlett was, after all, a wee bit tired, and thought they had better spend the morning settling in; unless Lucy would at all like to go out? Lucy would rather like to go out, as it was her first day in Florence, but, of course, she could go alone. Miss Bartlett could not allow this. Of course she would accompany Lucy everywhere. Oh, certainly not; Lucy would stop with her cousin. Oh, no! that would never do. Oh, yes! At this point the clever lady broke in. "Being English, Miss Honeychurch will be perfectly safe. Italians understand. A dear friend of mine, Contessa Baroncelli, has two daughters, and when she cannot send a maid to school with them, she lets them go in sailor-hats instead. Every one takes them for English, you see." Miss Bartlett was unconvinced by the safety of Contessa Baroncelli's daughters. The clever lady then said that she was going to spend a long morning in Santa Croce, and if Lucy would come too, she would be delighted. Lucy said that this was most kind, and at once opened the Baedeker, to see where Santa Croce was. "Tut, tut! Miss Lucy! I hope we shall soon emancipate you from Baedeker. As to the true Italy - he does not even dream of it. The true Italy is only to be found by patient observation." This sounded very interesting, and Lucy started with her new friend in high spirits. Italy was coming at last. Miss Lavish - for that was the clever lady's name - turned to the right along the sunny Lung' Arno. Then Miss Lavish darted under the archway of the white bullocks, and she stopped, and she cried: "A smell! a true Florentine smell! Every city, let me teach you, has its own smell." "Is it a nice smell?" said Lucy, who had inherited from her mother a distaste to dirt. "One doesn't come to Italy for niceness," was the retort; "one comes for life."

Shearling boots. Draped ponchos. Shoulder pads. Turbans. Jumpsuits. These items are all glamorous, fashionable, and desirable - to women. But do they literally send men running in the opposite direction? Maybe, but Leandra Medine doesn't care. A born and bred Upper East Sider, Medine's fashion epiphany occurred while mourning multiple broken relationships in the dressing room of uber-trendy Topshop in Soho. As she slipped into drop-crotch shorts and a boxed sequin blazer, it hit her: she didn't have a boyfriend because of the way she dressed. The more she thought about it, she realized that such outfits, such items of clothing, could measure her whole life. These essays, written with the author's signature sass and blunt honesty, explore the deep connection between our memories and the sartorial choices associated with them. From The Bermuda Shorts to The Magical Harem Pants, Medine relates with wit how she navigated her way into the most unusual item of all: The Inconsequential Big White Dress (And Organza Jacket). That's right, even the MAN REPELLER found love. This book is a collection of awkwardly funny experiences, a sweet love story and, above all, a reminder to celebrate and embrace a world made for women, by women.

Beatles BowTie Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A celebration America's ongoing love affair with the Beatles, four longhaired, oddly dressed chaps who appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday evening, February 9, 1964 with half of America watching from their living rooms. Editor Ben Nussbaum traces the beginnings of this first internationally famous boy band, revealing how all four stars aligned to create the sonic sensation that changed the course of music history. Within just two months of the Fab Four's debut on Mr. Sullivan's variety hour, the band had secured all five top spots on BillBoard's Hot 100, and before year's end would sell an astonishing ten million records. Filled with dozens of color and black and white photographs, The Beatles details the rise and fall of the band, the stories behind the men, their relationships, the creation of the songs, the tours, the albums, and the unstoppable spread of Beatlemania around the globe. That the Beatles' legacy continues to fascinate music lovers and pop culture gurus fifty years since their meteoric climb is rendered even more remarkable when one considers that the Beatles would disband just six short years after they sang their first "yeah yeah yeah" on American television. In The Beatles, Nussbaum maps out the band's rise to fame in 1964 ("The Toppermost of the Poppermost" and "The Beginning") as well as three summers of grueling tours --sixty-six tours from 1964 to 1966 ("Twist & Shout"). The song-writing partnership between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, considered by many to be the most successful in history, is examined in "Come Together," revealing how the pair worked together and how their styles were vastly different yet complemented each other's, for a time. The chapter "We Can't Work It Out" discusses the inevitable demise of the Fab Four and how the men grew apart musically and personally due to the high pressures of becoming instant celebrities. In "Breaching the Iron Curtain," the Soviet Union's banning and bashing of the band only increased the youth of the U.S.S.R. to crave the Beatles more fervently and led to their further resentment of their government. Some two decades later, only upon the election of Beatles fan Mikhail Gorbachev did the first Beatles album get released in the U.S.S.R. Underscoring what Nussbaum refers to as "the grandeur of the catalog," Beatles experts Tim Riley and Patrick Foster choose their Top Twenty Beatles tunes, remarkably with only five songs in common. A special section will be welcome by all record collectors, the complete list of the twenty Beatles albums released in North America, including dates and song titles, from Introducing the Beatles, January 1964 to Let it Be, May 1970. The Beatles also takes a brief look at the long solo careers of the four artists after the dissolution of the band, including their musical highlights and lowlights. Other topics discussed in this vividly illustrated volume are the five top contenders for the "Fifth Beatle"( plus ten runners-up, including Little Richard and Yoko Ono), the story of Capitol Records exec, Dave Dexter, who nearly stalled the Beatles' entrance into America, and a section devoted to the band's children ("Here Come the Sons"), discussing the music careers of Julian Lennon, Sean Lennon, Zak Starkey, James McCartney, and Dhani Harrison.

The detective pulled up side by side a brand new Alfa Romeo in the hospital's staff park yard disregarding the "STAFF ONLY" sign. Immediately he stepped down from the police marked Volvo, three nurses in snow-white overcoats and a male attendant in silver grey overalls trolley-rolled a blood stained corpse from the Surgery arena, an adolescent male dead body covered partly in blood stained white sheets on a sanatorium trolley. A sign of relentless horrific commotion ahead. Stricken by temperate shock, the detective felt for his concealed automatic... A smartly dressed skinny young female in full army uniform, Colonel Natalie, waved majestically at the detective, inviting him to come closer. She was the first in command of the army squad. She held out her hand to shake the detective's. "Natalie Hofman is my name, Detective Pius, are you? I'm informed you are in command here, what is the case file?" "Yes, Detective Inspector Pius, Salt River police, I'm in command of a haunted case." "Where is the actual location of the devil beast detective, and what the hell is this creature?" "We shot at the beast, it returned to the ward on the ground floor, ward 12 over there. We have students inside there as well, students from Rosebud high school, so we need to act fast before all are bitten by the damn devil." "Jesus! And what exactly caused the fire at Rosebud high Detective?" "A long tęte-ŕ-tęte, let us discuss that later Colonel, we need to act faster before that devil takes more human blood, it has a lust for human blood." "A lust for human blood?" the colonel felt a chill attack from head to toes. "Did you say a lust for human blood detective?" "Yes, it's feeding on human blood, we already have one student bitten in there, and I can't imagine she is still alive." "What is the setting, should we attack concurrently without pause?" "No Colonel, as I said, we have students inside there." CRIME/HORROR FICTION AN ACTION PACKED NOVEL In an attempt to apprehend the murderers of his daughter, detective inspector Pius dramatically engages a ghostly creature purporting to be his dead daughter; while the police is yet to uncover a top-secret pub where teenagers are being trafficked into prostitution. There is however an unexplained heavy fire at a school where the detective's deceased daughter was a student and where his living daughter is a student which sends a number of students into admission at Cape hope regional hospital. Now in coma, his only living daughter is among the critically injured students in the school fire and the detective's investigative duties on the cause of the mysterious fire, with mixed feelings of the ghoul's utterances, along with an urgent lust to uncover his daughter's condition at the infirmary drag him into hospital territory. The hospital is well known as the best in brain surgery south of the Atlantic with expertise from a Russian doctor, but a few people know about the powers behind this, the Russian doctor and the hospital director perhaps know; the devil doctor will feed on human blood before engaging a surgery successfully.
