Oxford Edition of the Works of Robert Burns: Volume I: Commonplace Books, Tour Journals, and Miscellaneous Prose Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This volume of Robert Burns's Commonplace Books, Tours Journals and Miscellaneous Prose Works is a major contribution to our understanding of the life and writings of one of the major Scottish, and British, poets of all times. To the extent that the Commonplace Books and other prose writings offer a glimpse into Burns's creative workshop, they record the self-conscious poetic development of a man who was endowed with none of the advantages of birth and education enjoyed by many other writers. Spanning nearly two decades of his sadly foreshortened life, they permit a new understanding of his unique relationship to the literary and social culture of late eighteenth-century Scotland, and help explain how and why this humbly-born Ayrshire farmer became a poet of world renown. The items included here have never before been published complete in one volume (some are published for the first time), and they are arranged chronologically in order to highlight the major creative stages of his life. In contrast to the poems and songs, most of the material included was unpublished during the poet's lifetime, so this new edition is largely based on fresh transcriptions of manuscripts in Burns's hand, or in the hands of his various amanuenses. It offers diplomatic transcriptions that adhere as closely as possible to RB's original manuscript page, retaining his eccentric spellings, capitalisation, long and short dashes, punctuation, and use of ampersands, as well as marking revisions and elisions. The edition features a general introduction, and each item is preceded by full headnote, assessing its importance in relation to Burns's life and poetic corpus. Notes explicate names, cultural, historical and literary references, providing full cross-references these with the poetry and correspondence.

Extreme of Things Bloodaxe Books Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"Extreme of Things" is a large collection combining new poems with a thematic selection from recent books. It explores the duality of existence, a track which runs through all Jenny Joseph's work, whether for children or adults, in poetry or prose. This new book continues her attempt to present "how things work" at the core, at the edge. It begins with poems from her last two collections, "Ghosts and Other Company" (1995) and "All the Things I See" (2000), which lead to the body of new and previously uncollected poems in the second part. The "'Season Songs' from Persephone" (1986), her long out-of-print fictional work, are here reprinted as a bridge or interlude between the two main parts. 'Jenny Joseph writes poems full of mist and reason, poems strange in what they say but plain in the way they say it, poems rooted in an English tradition of passionate but quiet exactness...careful craftsmanship, an honest exploration of the human heart, and statement after statement that nags at the memory' - Robert Nye, "The Times". 'She can delineate surfaces like a sculptor - exact, precise, sharply definite - yet with a startling undertow, a pull of unease which lies just beneath the texture, as an artery beneath the skin' - Joan Foreman, "Eastern Daily Press". 'Rational, realist, philosophical, Jenny Joseph represents a stoical refusal to see life other than it is - a less sentimental poetry it would be hard to imagine' - "British Book News".

Opis - The final work of Nobel Prize-winning writer Günter Grass ? a witty and elegiac series of meditations on writing, growing old, and the world. Suddenly, in spite of the trials of old age, and with the end in sight, everything seems possible again: love letters, soliloquies, scenes of jealousy, swan songs, social satire, and moments of happiness. Only an ageing artist who had once more cheated death could get to work with such wisdom, defiance and wit. A wealth of touching stories is condensed into artful miniatures. In a striking interplay of poetry, lyric prose and drawings, Grass creates his final, major work of art. A moving farewell gift, a sensual, melancholy summation of a life fully lived. Paradise of Daintie Devices Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from A Paradise of Daintie Devices: A Collection of Poems, Songs, Ballads It (poesy) was ever thought to have some participation of divineness, because it doth raise and erect the mind, by submitting the shews of things to the desires of the mind. Lord Bacon - Advancement of Learning, Bk. II. Verse sweetens toil, however rude the sound; All at her work the village-maiden sings, Nor while she turns the giddy wheel around, Revolves the sad vicissitudes of things. Gifford - Contemplation. Poetry is older than prose. Of this we have what maybe called paleontological proof in the structure of all languages. Our every-day speech is fossil poetry. Words which are now dead were once alive. The farther we recede and the lower we descend, the more these wonderful petrifactions of old forms of poetic thought and feeling abound. Abraham Coles - The Evangel - Introduction. A verse may find him who a sermon flies, And turn delight into a sacrifice. George Herbert - The Temple - The Church Porch. Guild of Play Book of Festival and Dance (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Guild of Play Book of Festival and Dance It is with great pleasure that I say a few words in bringing this book to the notice of the public. For many years past I have taken a very keen interest in the work of the Guild of Play, which I regard as so distinctly complementary to the work of the Guild of the Brave Poor Things, which is doing such yeoman service in brightening and uplifting the lives of so many crippled people. Of the work of the Heritage Craft Schools I cannot speak too highly. It appeals on many grounds to all interested in the well-being of cripples, and I can only say that year by year I watch the undoubted growth of the movement with entire and unqualified approval. It is quite possible, however, to be crippled in circumstance, as bitterly as to be handicapped physically, and for the children belonging to the Guild of Play it is indeed a steep path which leads to the stars. By means of such organised dances, games, and songs as are taught at the Guild of Play, I believe much can be done to brighten and uplift the lives of children who swarm in the poorer districts of London and our large cities generally. Nothing in the whole of the great Church Pageant which has just closed at Fulham Palace touched me more than the dancing of the 150 Guild of Play children in Episode X. The happiness and absolute unconsciousness of the children won all hearts, and in it I read, as their President, bright hopes for the future if this play could be made more general and have more widespread influence. I told the children then, and I take this opportunity of repeating it now, that I am proud to be their President; that I rejoice in their happiness; that I personally thank all those who contribute to that happiness; and I wish their dancing and play to be brought to the knowledge of a wider public, and I trust, by means of this sound part of the Guild of Play Book of Festival and Dance, that many more children will spend happy hours than ever before, and that this particular system of organised play will be given by educational authorities, philanthropists, and all lovers of children everywhere, all possible advancement, support, and progress. Distinctive Characteristics of Ancient Irish Melody Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Distinctive Characteristics of Ancient Irish Melody: The Scales, a Plea for Restoration and Preservation, Being a Lecture Read on Monday Evening, 15th February, 1897, Before the National Literary Society Among the many by-paths of musical study it would scarcely be possible to find any avenue more attractive, or more likely to delight the leisure of the musical student, than that which runs far back into the shades of antiquity, and traverses the widely-spread and mysterious regions of ancient Folk-song. Among such scenes we propose to-night for awhile to linger. In paying a visit of inquiry to these remote regions we need not - we shall not - regard with any less affection the more frequented parts of the musical field. On the contrary we shall see with a better informed mind the true position of all things, and with a surer judgment gauge their relative value. We may even venture to promise to any musical student who will study the truth in National music, many an added ornament, and powerful and ever fresh resources in expression. In Folk-song, Poetry and Music grow and blossom together to infold and complete each other like melody and harmony, and thus completed they form an emotional record telling what manner of men they were who sang these songs - what they loved - how they lived. Supposing skill to be equal, it is with individual musicians (whether composers or performers) as it is with nations. Dreamers and sentimentalists, and men of energetic and vigorous habits, the happy and contented, and those who are suffering under oppression and misery, will make music of a diverse character. To take an example - energy of character and life are expressed through a strongly marked rhythm, through melody made of wide skips, unexpected changes of all sorts, through harmony that is strong and energetic, and often swiftly changing, while people of a reflective or romantic turn, losing much of these qualities, will rather be inclined to what we call cantabile effects. Rhythmic definiteness they are content to neglect if only the emotional waves, and the rise and fall of the vocal cadences, are sufficiently regarded. Elderly British men display a variety of annoying habits. They write letters to the newspapers; they drink too much; they reminisce about the old days; they make lewd comments to younger women; they shout at the television screen; and they go for long walks and get lost. Jeremy Cameron chose the last of these options. Trying to emulate Patrick Leigh Fermor's feat of 1933, he walked from Hook of Holland to Istanbul. Leigh Fermor was a legendary figure. Scholar, multilinguist, beautiful prose stylist, war hero, tough guy, charmer and famous lover: Cameron is none of these things and he also suffers from a heart condition. Rest assured that there will be no tedious details of operations or stoicism in this book. Nor will there be descriptions of understated generosity, quiet irony or British phlegm. The main point of travel is to recognise the virtues of staying at home. When at home, it is not possible to get bogged down in Alpine snow, fall over on one's face on Kosovan tarmac or suffer a comprehensive mugging on deserted roads in Greece. Nor does one have to speak foreign languages, eat foreign food or, above all, drink terrible tea. It is about two thousand miles from Hook of Holland to Istanbul. Thirteen countries lie in wait for the walker. They have many wonderful sights and much fascinating history. Readers will not find them in this book. They will, however, find a number of stories of varying authenticity and some very dubious observations about life. By the time Turkey arrived, Cameron was utterly and completely fed up with the whole process. Never again would he do anything quite so stupid. He is currently walking round all the places in England beginning with the letter Q.

Trust. In Saint Faustina's Footsteps Ignatius press

Literatura/Religia

This is the amazing story of Saint Faustina--the greatest Christian mystic of the twentieth century--and her devotion to the Divine Mercy, which has become the fastest spreading religious devotion in the world. This lavishly illustrated book is essentially a love story about God's immense love for his people and the reciprocation of this love by the humble Polish nun, canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II.In fulfilling the mission entrusted to her by Christ to promote the message of his Divine Mercy, Sister Faustina met with many obstacles, but she came through all her trials victoriously. The power of her message about God's infinite mercy, forged in the fire of adversity, has accomplished seemingly impossible things. Although coming from the spiritual visions of just one person, devotion to the Divine Mercy has spread throughout the world like lightning, bringing to mind the parable of the mustard seed: from one small seed grew a great tree with many branches. This book is also a story about Jesus Christ, who is not remote and abstract, but who enters human history, who enters the events of our lives and forges relationships with us. The work of Jesus Christ is very real and so, too, is this book marked by reality To follow in the footsteps of Saint Faustina, the author and photographer moved from place to place-- real places in eastern Europe such as Warsaw, Krakow, Plock and Vilnius. They encountered real people, such as Blessed Michal Sopocko and Blessed John Paul II. They recorded their observations and impressions in beautiful prose and gorgeous photographs in order to bring the realness of these places and people to as wide an audience as possible.
