Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Taxation of Corporations in New York Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Taxation of Corporations in New York: With Forms, and an Appendix Containing the Provision of the Federal Income Tax Law Affecting Corporations Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1905 by Mr. Powell, there have been many additions to the case law in connection with local taxation, and the statutory changes affecting the taxation of corporations for state purposes have been frequent and radical. The statute governing the annual franchise tax (§§ 182 et seq. Tax Law) which was radically amended in 1906 and 1907 has now been construed by the Courts in most important particulars. The subject of the special franchise tax, which at the time of the publication of the first edition was still before the Federal Courts on the question of its constitutional construction, has now been passed on by those courts as constitutional, and has also been interpreted by the Court of Appeals in this state in many of its features, particularly on the important question of the method of arriving at the value of the special franchise. It may, therefore, be said that the development of this important branch of state taxation has now been marked out on permanent lines. All of these things have induced the authors to prepare and present a second edition of the book, bringing the case and statute law, affecting corporations in this state, down to date, and to make the book complete as a work on corporate taxation, the new Federal Corporation Tax Law (Income Tax Law) has been added. The present edition has, in the main, followed the scheme presented in the first edition, viz.: that of a commentary on the statute and case law of taxation. The body of the book has again been divided into four parts. I. Local Taxation, which comprehends the assessments of corporations by local assessors for local purposes. II. The Special Franchise Tax assessed by state officers, and partly administered by local officers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Christian Sun, Vol. 83 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Christian Sun, Vol. 83: January 8, 1931 It is now over a month before Christmas, and as we sit here in our home tonight we can hear two different groups practicing their native carols. They sound very much like negro spirituals to us, only the singing is not quite so melodious. Christ mas week these groups come and sing in front of houses and expect either gifts of food or money. However, they did not approach our house last year (maybe it was because we were new-comers) With us, Christmas begins early and lasts a long time because of all the belated letters and packages. If we waited until after Christmas to write you about ours here, you would get it _so late that you' would be no longer interested in such things, so I will tell you about the events of last year, which will be similar this year. Our celebration began Christmas at 5 A. M. When the boys. And girls from both dormitories met around a big bamboo Christmas tree in the sala of the girls' dormitory, and patiently waited for the gifts to be distributed. After songs and an appropriate talk, gifts were given and exchanged among the boys and girls. Most of the gifts on the tree were fro-m missionary boxes sent from societies in thestates. Then the whole group came to the hospital to share our tree and join in singing carols to'the patients. The patients who are unfortunate enough to be in the hos pital at Christmas time enjoy the singing and Christmas spirit. Each patient is given some thing from-the missionary boxes, such as towels, toothbrushes, soap, and for the children there are toys and dolls. Of course, the doctor, nurses and attendants receive and exchange gifts at the tree, too. We also had a short talk which was given by Dr. Laubach last year. Then Mrs. White and I also had another tree at'our home and a Christmas dinner for the missionaries and some of the workers here in Cagayan. Among the decorations at the hospital was a big red cross in electric lights which made a good showing from the road. And this year we are planning a large community Christmas tree which will be lighted every night during Christmas week in the yard in front of the hospital. St. Andrew's College Review Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Easter, 1915 So many things have happened since we last went to press, that we can do no more than allude very briefly to a few of them. Christmas has come and gone. So have the Christmas puddings, mince pies, and all the other delightful concomitants of this delightful season. The New Year was ushered in punctually on the first of January, and is still with us; though by this time it is no longer in its infancy; and we have now got so used to it that we are able to write it correctly in our correspondence without the necessity of afterwards changing a four into a five. A good many new year resolutions have, we dare say, by this time been broken. We can only hope that those who made them will not wait until 1916 before renewing them. In these things we cannot have a better motto than - Do It Now. Another term has come and gone, with its varied hopes and fears, its joys and disappointments. its difficulties and achievements. On the whole, it has been, we think, a very strenuous term. Hour by hour, and day by day, the work of the classroom has gone on. And let no one think that achievement in the realms of learning is less glorious because it is not brought about so quickly as in other fields, and is less spectacular. It is for learning that schools are founded; and the boy who makes the best of his opportunities in school is the one who is most likely to make the best use of his opportunities in life. We have had a memorable hockey season, and although our team did not carry our the championship, they did a better thing than if they had merely won. They deserved to win. "Who misses or who wins the prize, Go lose or conquer as you can; But if you win. or if you lose, Pray God. be each a gentleman." The words are Thackeray's. but the ideal is ours. A missing God. A library with the secrets to the universe. A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away. Carolyn's not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father. In the years since then, Carolyn hasn't had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father's ancient customs. They've studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they've wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God. Now, Father is missing-perhaps even dead-and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation. As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own. But Carolyn has accounted for this. And Carolyn has a plan. The only trouble is that in the war to make a new God, she's forgotten to protect the things that make her human. Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters and propelled by a plot that will shock you again and again, The Library at Mount Char is at once horrifying and hilarious, mind-blowingly alien and heartbreakingly human, sweepingly visionary and nail-bitingly thrilling-and signals the arrival of a major new voice in fantasy. The World Almanac and Encyclopedia, Vol. 2 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The World Almanac and Encyclopedia, Vol. 2: January, 1895 To meet the wants of the ever widening circle of its friends additional information has been introduced in this year' 8 issue of the almanac of the usual diversified character. The scope of this annual maybe said to extend, like its circulation, to the ends of the earth, for such, in effect, are Iceland and New Zealand, russian-asia and the Cape of Good hope, from which orders have been received, and to embrace all things in it. The almanac has a gron vogue in most foreign countries, and is now accepted in Europe as the only popular exposition of American statistics, and how it is regarded by the most progressive people of the East is evidenced by a call for three thousand copies of this issue from a bookseller in Japan. To respond liberally to this general demand for the book has been the aim in its compilation, and thus, while new topics have been introduced, all the standing departments, astronomical, educational, financial, religious, military, sporting, literary, political, local, etc. Have been extended and improved. Among the special features of the present edition, appearing for the first time, are the financial statements of over three hundred and sixty universities and colleges. To the elaborate exposition of railroad systems in the United States and Canada has been added summaries of their latest reports of receipts and expenditures. Much attention has been given to the labor problem. Anew tabular history of strikes in this country appears, as well as the text of the President' s proclamations in July and the recommendations of the Government Strike Commission. In the sporting department will be found the record of Vigilant' s adventures in British waters, and in the department of literature a reprint of the world almanac's notable list of 'the Hundred Greatest Novels, and of Sir John Lubbock' s 'hundred Books Best Worth Reading, and a'record of the Harvard Yale debates. The lovers of whist Will welcome a statement of the new and enlarged rules of their fascinating game. The president of the Church of Latter Day Saints contributes a specially written article on the organization and tenets of the believers in the Mormon faith. The platform and secret oath of the mysterious A. P. A. Are given, and other new matters are the new Congress just elected, the text of the Chinese Exclusion Treaty, a synopsis of the new Constitution of the State of New York, the rates established by the new Tarid' compared with those of the mckinley and 1883 Tariffs, and facts about transoceanic cables. A novel feature is a census of the population of principal cemeteries of our great cities. The latest gleanings from the United States Census as to population, manufactures, real estate mortgages, farm products, etc. Are presented. Of not less interest is an estimate of the present population of each of the States and Territories, made by their Governors for this issue of the almanac. And it may be added that the valuable information about our British neighbors and about continental royalties, governments, and peoples is repeated, after careful revision to date by the world' 3 resident correspondents abroad. Velveteen Rabbit Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Velveteen Rabbit: Or How Toys Become Real There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming. There were other things in the stocking, nuts and oranges and a toy engine, and chocolate almonds and a clockwork mouse, but the Rabbit was quite the best of all. For at least two hours the Boy loved him, and then Aunts and Uncles came to dinner, and there was a great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels, and in the excitement of looking at all the new presents the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Omnibus PAN BOOKS

Literatura obcojęzyczna

DON'T PANIC: collected together in the Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy are the five titles that comprise Douglas Adams' wildly popular and wholly remarkable comedy science fiction series. This one volume paperback edition comes complete with an unhelpful introduction from the author, a bonus short story, Young Zaphod Plays It Safe, and a special undeleted scene . . .The Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyOne Thursday lunchtime the Earth gets unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be rather a lot to cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun. The Galaxy may offer a mind-boggling variety of ways to be blown up and/or insulted, but it's very hard to get a cup of tea. The Restaurant at the End of the UniverseWhen all questions of space, time, matter and the nature of being have been resolved, only one question remains - 'Where shall we have dinner?' The Restaurant at the End of the Universe provides the ultimate gastronomic experience, and for once there is no morning after to worry about.Life, the Universe and EverythingFollowing a number of stunning catastrophes, Arthur Dent is surprised to find himself living in a hideously miserable cave on prehistoric Earth. However, just as he thinks that things cannot get possibly worse, they suddenly do. An eddy in the space-time continuum lands him, Ford Prefect, and their flying sofa in the middle of the cricket ground at Lord's, just two days before the world is due to be destroyed by the Vogons. Escaping the end of the world for a second time, Arthur, Ford, and their old friend Slartibartfast embark (reluctantly) on a mission to save the whole galaxy from fanatical robots. Not bad for a man in his dressing gown.So Long, and Thanks for All the FishThere is a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. It's not an easy thing to do, and Arthur Dent thinks he's the only human who's been able to master this nifty little trick - until he meets Fenchurch, the woman of his dreams. Fenchurch once realised how the world could be made a good and happy place. Unfortunately, she's forgotten. Convinced that the secret lies within God's Final Message to His Creation, they go in search of it. And, in a dramatic break with tradition, actually find it . . .Mostly HarmlessArthur Dent has settled down on the small planet Lamuella and has embraced his role as a Sandwich Maker. However, his plans for a quiet life are thrown awry by the unexpected arrival of his daughter. There's nothing worse than a frustrated teenager with a copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in their hands. When she runs away, Arthur goes after her determined to save her from the horrors of the universe. After all - he's encountered most of them before. This publishing phenomenon began as a radio drama and now exists in a number of wildly contradictory versions (including a TV series, a movie and a towel) - this version, produced by Douglas Adams' original publisher, is, at least, definitively inaccurate.
