Religion and Politics in Latin America - 2862132553

Religion and Politics in Latin America Greenwood Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

What drives religious people to act in politics? In Latin America, as in the Middle East, religious belief is a primary motivating factor for politically active citizens. Edward Lynch questions the frequent pitfall of Latin American scholarship--categorizing religious belief as a veil for another interest or as a purview just of churchmen, thereby ignoring its hold over lay people. Challenging this traditional view, Lynch concludes that religious motivations are important in their own right and raises important questions about the relationship between religion and politics in Latin America. Looking at the two most important Catholic lay movements, Liberation Theology and Christian Democracy, Lynch uses Nicaragua and Venezuela as case studies of how religious philosophy has fared when vested with political power. This timely study describes the motivations driving many important political actors. Divided into two parts, Ideologies In Theory and Ideologies In Practice, this volume features a discussion of the theoretical background of two Catholic philosophies. Using Nicaragua and Venezuela as case studies, Lynch finds that Liberation Theology and Christian Democracy are not as different as many scholars think; in fact, there are many parellels. He concludes that both philosophies face their strongest challenge from a revitalized orthodox Catholic social doctrine.

Returning to Reality - 2862245333

Returning to Reality Lightning Source UK Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Could it be that we have lost touch with some basic human realities in our day of high-tech efficiency, frenetic competition, and ceaseless consumption? Have we turned from the moral, the spiritual, and even the physical realities that make our lives meaningful? These are metaphysical questions--questions about the nature of reality--but they are not abstract questions. These are very down to earth questions that concern power and the collective frameworks of belief and action governing our daily lives. This book is an introduction to the history, theory, and application of Christian metaphysics. Yet this book is not just an introduction, it is also a passionately argued call for a profound change in the contemporary Christian mind. Paul Tyson argues that as Western culture's Christian Platonist understanding of reality was replaced by modern pragmatic realism, we turned not just from one outlook on reality to another, but away from reality itself. This book seeks to show that if we can recover this ancient Christian outlook on reality, reframed for our day, then we will be able to recover a way of life that is in harmony with human and divine truth. ""Paul Tyson is an academic with a passion. He wants us to think hard and long about overcoming dualistic thinking and not to buy into the sacred-secular divide. He thus advocates a personal faith with public implications and longs to see us enter ways of knowing that combine transcendentalism and a passion for justice."" --Charles Ringma, Professor emeritus, Regent College, Vancouver, BC, Canada ""Paul Tyson has written an impressive essay on Christian metaphysics. He is aware of the widespread charges against Platonism, metaphysics, and Christianity but he addresses them with a balanced combination of sound common sense, theological acumen, and philosophical finesse. He shows how Christian Platonism is richly concerned with the things of reality we know, while yet seeing them in the light of a wisdom that is more than human. His thoughtful voice is both accessible and penetrating and the human wisdom of the author shines through. Warmly recommended."" --William Desmond, Professor of Philosophy, Katholieke Universteit Leuven, Leuven, Belgium and David R. Cook Professor of Philosophy, Villanova University, Villanova, PA ""Paul Tyson's Returning to Reality is an excellent introduction to the fundamental existential and intellectual crisis facing Christianity and the West: whether meaning and intelligibility are intrinsic to reality and thus whether truth is anything but pragmatic success. Simultaneously beautiful, whimsical, and profound, Returning to Reality provides an important witness to the unity of life in Christ and the life of the mind and compelling evidence that only Christian faith in its fullness can now save reason."" --Michael Hanby, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy of Science, Pontifical John Paul II Institute, Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. ""Everyone does metaphysics. For Paul Tyson, therefore, the crucial question becomes whether we fall in line with the one-dimensional (1DM) physicalist outlook of modernity or open our horizons to the three dimensions of morality, physicality, and spirituality that make up the 3DM outlook of Christian Platonism. This is a passionately written book, calling for nothing less than a 'life-world rebellion.' Those gripped by Tyson's uncovering of the mythos of modernity find here a convincing alternative to the amoral instrumentalism that characterizes much of contemporary society."" --Hans Boersma, J. I. Packer Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, BC, Canada Paul Tyson is an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Not

The Eucharist As a Countercultural Liturgy - 2862360757

The Eucharist As a Countercultural Liturgy Pickwick Pubns

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Since its institution, the Eucharist has been celebrated in all churches regardless of denominational differences. Yet its importance should not be just confined to the Christian communities; it can have transformational power in the cultural milieu. In this book, Yik-Pui Au argues that the Eucharist can be a countercultural liturgy that upholds the identity and values of Christianity by countering cultural currents that are contrary to the Christian faith. Au takes an interdisciplinary approach comprised of church history, ritual theory, and theology of culture to examine systematically the countercultural functions of the Eucharist interpreted by three modern theologians, Henri de Lubac, John Zizioulas, and Miroslav Volf, representing the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant traditions respectively. The comparative evaluation of this cross-tradition analysis supports Au's argument that even though culture is complex and changing, the countercultural function of the Eucharist remains valid. Despite its complexity, culture can be transformed by the Eucharist and it can also challenge and renew our understanding of the Eucharist. She suggests that due to its richness, the countercultural function of the Eucharist cannot be exhausted by one tradition. It is the task of theologians to help the church continually venture to explore and vivify this function ecumenically. ""Yik-Pui Au's book is a theological tour de force that brings together the theologies of the Eucharist of three modern theologians--a Roman Catholic, an Orthodox, and an Evangelical--to explore their implications for a countercultural stance. Drawing on church history, ritual theory, and theology of culture, Au develops a eucharistic theology that promotes a countercultural understanding of the Christian faith and a Christian practice in favor of justice, peace, and ecological integrity. I most strongly recommend the book and wish it a widespread readership."" --Peter C. Phan, The Ignacio Ellacuria, SJ Chair of Catholic Social Thought, Department of Theology, Georgetown University ""To those who appreciate the Eucharist as something central to Christian life here is an exciting book. Yik-Pui Au examines the countercultural potential of the Eucharist and does so by examining that potential historically, ritually, and theologically in the ecumenical context of the theologies of three important theologians: Henri de Lubac, John Zizioulas, and Miroslav Volf. She does this in a sensitively critical and insightfully comparative way. This is an important book for those interested in the empowering function of the central liturgy of Christianity in its critique of contemporary culture, its individualism, totalitarianism, hierarchy, anthropocentrism, and social exclusion. I recommend it enthusiastically.""   --Anselm K. Min, Professor of Religion, Department of Religion, Claremont Graduate University Yik-Pui Au is the co-winner of the First East-West Theological Forum Prize in 2015. Her award-winning paper on Volf is incorporated in chapter 5 of this book. In 2006 she received the Claude H. Thompson Award (for acts of justice and reconciliation) from Emory University's Candler School of Theology. Au holds an MTh from Emory University and a PhD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Toward a Generous Orthodoxy Wipf and Stock

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Hans Frei, one of the most influential American theologians of the twentieth century, is generally considered a founder of postliberal theology. Frei never set forth his thinking systematically, and he has been criticized for being inconsistent, contradictory, and insufficiently rigorous. Jason Springs seeks here to offer a re-evaluation of Frei's work. Arguing that Hans Frei's theology cannot be understood without a meticulous consideration of the complex equilibrium of his theological and philosophical interests and influences, Springs vindicates Frei's christologically motivated engagement with Ludwig Wittgenstein, Clifford Geertz, and Erich Auerbach, as well as his use of ordinary language philosophy and non-foundational philosophical insights, while illuminating his indebtedness to Karl Barth's theology. Moreover, by placing Frei's work in critical conversation with developments in pragmatist thought and cultural theory since his death, this re-reading aims to resolve many of the misunderstandings that vex his theological legacy. What emerges from Toward a Generous Orthodoxy is a sharpened account of the christologically anchored, interdisciplinary, and conversational character of Frei's theology, one he came to describe as a ""generous orthodoxy""--modeling a way for academic theological voices to take seriously both their vocation to the Christian church and their roles as interlocutors in academic discourse. ""Jason Springs' Toward a Generous Orthodoxy is quite simply the best available account of Hans Frei's work. But this book is more than just an account of Frei; it makes a constructive contribution to theology that is truly remarkable. I am particularly struck by his observation that Wittgenstein helps us see why we should never abandon the presumption that theological language helps us understand the way things are. This is really a terrific book."" --Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics, Duke University ""Hans Frei's hard sayings about the Bible, theology, and the church won him a major following. His critics reject those sayings as obviously false. Jason Springs has done something quite different and original. He has recast Frei's central claims in a way that frees them from paradox. This book will require theologians to rethink the options they have been debating for the last thirty years."" --Jeffrey Stout, author of Blessed Are the Organized: Grassroots Democracy in America ""Springs' careful and intelligent account . . . succeeds in its major ambition: it demonstrates how it is that Frei's work as a whole does indeed cohere, whatever shifts of emphasis and approach might have shaped it. The cultural-linguistic Frei and the Frei of the Gospels' realistic objectivity are one and the same."" --Mike Higton, Pro Ecclesia ""This is the most important commentary on Frei's theology, among numerous article-length and several book-length treatments, produced to date."" --Michael Raposa, Heythrop Journal Jason Springs studied theology, ethics, and philosophy at Princeton Seminary and Harvard University. He held a post-doctoral fellowship in Christian Thought and Practice at Princeton University's Center for the Study of Religion and is now Associate Professor of Religion, Ethics, and Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
