Calming the Angry Brain New Harbinger

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

What happens to a person's brain when they become angry? Anger is an instinctive yet complex emotional reaction that affects everyone differently. People whose brains are wired for anger may become angry at a moment's notice, act impulsively on their anger, regret their behavior afterwards, and fly into dangerous rages that leave them feeling out of control. "Calming the Angry Brain" examines how the limbic system affects the way people process anger and why some people are predisposed to anger, while others are able to remain calm in aggravating situations. Readers learn how to change their patterns of thinking so that they become less likely to experience extreme levels of anger and more in control of their behavior when they do become angry. By understanding the six natural stages of emotionality: system activation, modulation, planning, taking emotion-influenced action, evaluation, and system deactivation, readers can come to terms with possible problems at each stage of processing. The book then offers guidance for taking charge of anger and learning new ways to rewire the brain so that anger is measured and manageable, not destructive.

Gender and Pronoun Usage in the 17th Century GRIN Verlag

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, printed single-sided, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: Introduction to Sociolinguistics, language: English, abstract: Language changes, all the time. This is true because English spoken a millennium ago significantly differs from English spoken today. But how did it change and who were the in-novators who promoted language change in the course of time?It is the aim of the following research paper to show how and why the pronominal system changed from thou to you as the standard second person singular pronoun in the course of the Early Modern English period (1500-1700). More precisely, private correspondence from the 17th century will be examined to see why thou or you respectively were chosen and if it was one gender rather than the other who mainly contributed to the standard that we have today. The first chapter is going to shed light on Renaissance England and its demographical facts with particular emphasis on the role of women. General information will be included as well as some facts about family life, and most importantly, about education and literacy, which is imperative for language change found in written texts. The second chapter is going to investigate when, how and why a change in the pronominal system from thou to you occurred. In order to do so the concepts of power and solidarity as well as aspects of politeness theory will be considered. Chapter two is going to finish with a summary of assumptions about gender differences in pronoun usage. In chapter three a small-scale qualitative analysis of letters by female and male writers to family members will be carried out. The material is taken from the Corpus of Early English Correspondence (CEEC) as well as from the Helsinki Corpus (HC). It will be examined if the concepts brought forward in chapter two, e.g. affection or anger and matters of social stratification, e.g. super-/subordination played a role in language choice and, ultimately, language change. It is going to be the aim of the fourth and last chapter to summarize the findings and an attempt will be made to form a conclusion to the question asked initially.

Doorbell of Forgiveness Companion Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book is based on a seminar given by Don E. Stevens during October 2007. He felt strongly that the most important spiritual work in the world today is associated with forgiveness. Don and his Young Peoples Group (YPG) met to determine best way forward. In the language of Rwanda, known as Kinyarwanda there are two words: "imbabazi" which means (ask for) forgiveness, and "kubabarira" which means to forgive. On May 19, 2011 in London, Jean-Paul Samputu, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide wrote for Laurent about forgiveness: "In life we must find creative (or constructive) ways to negotiate conflicts. We cannot change the past but we can change how we approach it, or how we carry our feelings about it into the future, and forgiveness is the key. Forgiveness is the most powerful weapon against terrorism and atrocities. To break these cycles of violence, wars, conflicts, is to preach forgiveness. We live in the world where revenge is the culture. Only the culture of forgiveness will stop the cycle (of war, genocide, etc.). My real enemy was not the one who wronged me, my real enemy was my hatred, bitterness, my anger which came alive in me. We become what we don't forgive. Forgiveness means to liberate from bondage, to release from the prison of our desire for revenge, of our anger, our bitterness, and hatred. Life is not changed by knowing the word of the truth but by living the truth."
