US Army's First, Last, and Only All-black Rangers Savas Beatie

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The 2d Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) was the first and only all-black Ranger unit in the history of the United States Army. Its ten-month lifespan included selection, training, and seven months of combat deployment in Korea, after which the unit was deactivated. Edward Posey's magnificent new study, now available in paperback, is the first complete history of this elite, all-volunteer unit, whose members were drawn from the 3rd Battalion of the 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment and the 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Battalion. After experiencing the normal travails of boot camp at Fort Benning, which segregation and racism only made worse, the all-black Rangers set out to join the Korean War in late 1950. On January 7, 1951, the Rangers found themselves defending a critical railroad running through Tanyang Pass, which Communist guerillas tried to infiltrate. The nighttime action triggered the Rangers' inaugural combat, which ended with the recommendation for a Bronze Star for gallantry for a Ranger sergeant. Additional combats with the North Korean and Communist Chinese forces erupted near Majori-ri and Chechon. But the event that propelled the 2d Rangers into the record books was their airborne assault near Munsan-Ni on March 23, 1951-the first in Ranger history. Once on the ground, Posey and his comrades attacked and captured Hill 151. The fighting-often conducted at very close quarters, and some of it with the bayonet and rifle butt-demonstrated the courage of these tough African American soldiers. Heavy fighting marked their months at the front, including a magnificent attack and defense of Hill 581 that May. Throughout their deployment in Korea, the 2d Rangers served with honor and achieved an outstanding combat record.Posey's long overdue The US Army's First, Last, and Only All-Black Rangers: The 2d Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) in the Korean War, 1950-1951 (written with the help of other Rangers) is based upon the firsthand experiences of many members of the unit, official records, interviews with survivors, and other archival material. Stitched together, this information offers a rich and worthy addition to the growing literature on the Korean War by explaining the obstacles these patriotic African Americans faced, their sacrifices, and their courageous actions on the far side of the world.Nearly sixty years have passed since the Korean War slipped into the realm of history. Now, the world will finally learn the true story of the United States Army's first, last, and only all-black Ranger unit.About the Author: Master Sergeant (Ret) Edward L. Posey joined the US Army in 1947. After serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment, he volunteered for airborne training with the Rangers in 1950 and served with distinction in the Korean War (where he was wounded). Sergeant Posey retired from the service in 1969. In 2002, he was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame for his dedication to duty and distinguished military career.

The 4th United States Colored Troops (USCT) regiment saw considerable action in the eastern theatre of operations from late 1863 to mid-1865. The regiment - drawn largely from freedmen and liberated slaves in the Middle Atlantic and New England states - served in Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler's Army of the James, whose mission was to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond. From May to December 1864, the 4th saw action in the Bermuda Hundred and Richmond-Petersburg campaigns, and in early 1865 helped capture the defences of Wilmington, North Carolina, the last open seaport of value to the Confederacy. Citing recently discovered and previously unpublished accounts, author Edward G. Longacre goes beyond the battlefield heroics of the 4th USCT, blending his unique insights into political and social history to analyze the motives, goals, and aspirations of the African American enlisted men. The author also emphasizes how these soldiers overcame what one of their commanders called "stupid, unreasoning, and quite vengeful prejudice" and shows how General Butler, a supporter of black troops, gave the unit opportunities to prove itself in battle, resulting in a combat record of which any infantry regiment, black or white, could be proud.

The legendary American bandmaster Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore (1829-1892) was born in Ballygar, County Galway, in Ireland, and emigrated to the United States in 1848. He settled in Boston, and soon established himself in the area as a virtuoso cornet player and bandleader, directing the Suffolk, Boston Brigade and Salem bands. In 1858 he founded "Gilmore's Grand Boston Band" and rapidly earned a reputation as one of the foremost bandmasters in the nation, leading his band on several tours across the country. At the start of the Civil War he enlisted his band in the Union Army with the 24th Massachusetts Volunteers, and shortly afterwards Governor Andrews tasked him with training and organizing all of the Massachusetts Militia bands. After the war, General Banks asked him to organize a peace celebration. Gilmore relished his new role as an impresario, staging the large-scale National Peace Jubilee in New Orleans (1869). He went on to present an even larger-scale World Peace Jubilee in Boston in 1872, an 18-day extravaganza celebrating the end of the Franco-Prussian War and featuring 20,000 chorus members and 2000 instrumentalists, including a number of famous orchestras and bands from Europe. He moved to New York in 1873 to become the bandmaster of the acclaimed 22nd Regiment Band, a position he held for the rest of his life. Gilmore continued to organize and present concerts on a grandiose scale, performing at the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886 and initiating the first "Promenade Concert in America" - the forerunner of the Boston Pops. In 1888 he and the 22nd Regiment Band started the tradition of the annual New Year's celebrations in Times Square. John Philip Sousa called Gilmore "the Father of the American Band." His major contributions to American band music include expansion of band instrumentation, new repertoire, and the popularization of the concert band. Up to the 1850s American bands had been primarily brass marching bands, but with the 1858 founding of his own band, Gilmore began to follow the trend of European bands by adding woodwinds. By the time he and his band toured Europe in 1878 he had expanded his band to 66 members, with 1/3 clarinets, 1/3 other woodwinds and 1/3 brasses, laying the foundation for the present-day American concert band. He also expanded the repertoire by arranging standard classical works for band. Gilmore wrote a number of marches, most under the pseudonym of Louis Lambert. Today his two most popular works are "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", written after the Battle of Gettysburg, and the the present work. The "Famous 22nd Regiment March" was written in 1874, the second year of Gilmore's 22 year tenure with the 22nd Regimental Band, and was first published by Carl Fischer in 1882. Later editions were published with amended instrumentation, but in this welcome new edition Richard Sargeant pays tribute to Gilmore's original instrumentation, scoring it for piccolo, flute, oboe, 3 B-flat clarinets plus E-flat and B-flat bass clarinet, bassoon, SATB saxophones, 4 cornets, 4 horns, 2 trombones and bass trombone, euphonium, basses, snare drum, cymbals and bass drum.

Leadbelchers Regiment Games Workshop

GRY BITEWNE I FIGURKOWE / Warhammer Fantasy Battle / Ogre Kingdoms

Leadbelchers are generally regarded as unhinged by most other Ogres, but also highly entertaining. They are obsessed with destruction and noise, and arm themselves with great portable black powder weapons called Leadbelcher cannons. To the casual observer, these cannons can often look suspiciously like human or Dwarf designs, though no one has ever really come close enough to get a proper look. Before battle, Leadbelchers fill their cannon's barrel with crude black powder, metal shot, rusty nails, an assortment of wickedly bladed weapons and even the occasional cannon ball. Suffice to say, their approach to warfare is unsubtle, though entirely effective. If a volley of fast-moving, sharp missiles doesn't kill their foe, then a quick beating with a heavy cannon should finish the job. This multi-part plastic set contains 107 components with which to build four Ogre Leadbelchers. The set comes with plenty of optional extras including powder Gnoblars and plenty of spiky ammunition to ram into the cannons. These models are supplied with four 40mm square bases and they are supplied unpainted and require assembly - we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Paints.

Life of a Lancer in the Wars of the Punjaub, or, Seven Years Helion & Company Limited

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book comprises a new edition of the memoirs of a private soldier, James Gilling, originally published in 1855. Gilling served in the Ninth Lancers of the British army, and he gives a well-written, frank, and lively account of his time in India from 1843 to 1850, during which time he took part in both Anglo-Sikh Wars. It is the only published memoir written from the ranks of a lancer regiment at this period, and includes many outspoken opinions about army life, the conduct of war in India, and his fellow soldiers of all ranks. Original copies of this book are extremely rare; none have been traced in the major British and US libraries. The text has been transcribed from a photocopy in the National Army Museum London, UK. The memoir is an unusually frank and detailed account of the life of a cavalry soldier in India, with stories of incidents and individuals, alternating with the author's experiences in the fierce struggle against the well-trained armies of the Sikh nation. Gilling by his own admission was no hero, but just an ordinary soldier who got into scrapes and didn't enjoy soldiering very much, but did his duty when required. In 1850 he purchased his discharge from the army, and emigrated to the United States of America, where he settled in Lyons City, Iowa, and took up his old trade as a hair-dresser. He died in 1861. However, this is not merely a reprint of a rare nineteenth century memoir. The author, a specialist on the British cavalry of the early nineteenth century, has written a full introduction on the life in the cavalry at this period, including the careers of the many officers and comrades mentioned by Gilling. This introduction is drawn from extensive research in primary archives at the British Library, National Archives, and regimental archives, as well as contemporary published and unpublished journals. The work is fully annotated, and includes an extensive list of sources. It therefore provides new depth and perspective on the life of those who formed the ranks of the mounted arm of the British army. This book will appeal to the many people with an amateur but often very knowledgeable interest in the history of the British army, as well as to all those with a more specialist interest in the history of the British army, including university staff and students and special-interest groups and societies. The book will have a particular appeal for those Sikhs world-wide who have an interest in the military heritage of their community, as well as to family historians with ancestors who served in the British army in India.
