"I am Special" is a workbook developed by Peter Vermeulen and already used extensively with young people with autism spectrum disorder. The workbook is designed for a child to work through with an adult - parent, teacher or other professional. Unlike other books, its content and layout are devised especially for children who read, think and process information differently. "I am Special" is divided into two parts. The first is a theoretical introduction that explains how to inform children that they have autism or Asperger Syndrome and how to use the worksheets with groups or individuals. The second part consists of a series of worksheets which the child works through with an adult to create a unique and personal book about him or herself. It includes a series of exercises that present autism positively. They strike a balance between general facts, information about autism and personal information, covering the strengths an autistic person may have as well as the difficulties they may face. This fully updated second edition contains many new worksheets, and a useful CD ROM with all of the worksheets in a handy printable format. "I am Special" can be used with young people over the age of ten years. Not only is it an excellent source of information for the autistic child; it can be the first step in a process of counselling or psychotherapy or the springboard for a discussion group on autism.

Have you ever wondered about a friend, a partner, a mother, sister or daughter? Wondered why she says she feels 'different'? Out of step with her peers, she may struggle keeping friends and a job, yet she has multiple degrees. Bright from early on, she may have singleminded focus, sprinkles of anxiety, sensory and social issues, be gifted in art, writing, science, research or singing. Maybe Autism or Asperger Syndrome was mentioned but she did not resonate with the male profile or the stereotypical female profile. Maybe she is a woman on the Autism spectrum, with a unique constellation of super-abilities, strengths and challenges? This book takes a unique approach by combining stunning imagery along with the feelings, thoughts and words of Autistic women (and those that love and support them). This book also explores common strengths and challenges, the stages leading up to a diagnosis, important needs, reasons for a diagnosis, disclosure and an appendix of helpful tools. You will be inspired by a special group of 24 Autistic women led by Dr Temple Grandin, who showcase their unique strengths and provide helpful advice and tips. Watch for AspienPowers: The Unique constellation of Gifts, Strengths and Abilities of Females on the Autism Spectrum, coming soon.

Painful Gift Darton,Longman & Todd Ltd

This beautifully illustrated, moving and revelatory book will inspire readers to see that it is often that which gives us the deepest sorrow in life that can bring us the greatest joy. 'Welcome to my world. I have autism. 'But A Painful Gift is not about my autism. It is about the struggle to be truly ourselves in the world. To be fully human, to touch people and to be touched by people in return. 'Autism is a blessing, a gifted way of seeing the world. It is also deeply misunderstood. There is much talk of finding a cure for autism, but it is only our inability to accept difference that cries out to be remedied. 'Although autism is a gift, it can be a painful gift. I have shared my woundedness in full so that you might be given the strength to bring to light your woundedness. Great love and great suffering are part of the spiritual journey. Suffering can not only break us down, it can also break us open. This book is a pilgrimage of the mind to the heart and is a testimony to the fact that it is not the absence of affliction that makes us who we are, but our faithfulness in adversity that is the deeper measure. 'My deepest prayer is that all who read this book will be inspired to see that it is often that which gives us the deepest sorrow in life that can bring us the greatest joy.' Christopher Goodchild

'This book breaks down the social, emotional and practical aspects of relationships so usefully that it is a good resource for teachers and others working with neurotypical individuals. In fact the book so sensibly discusses pitfalls, strategies and individual responsibilities that it would be valuable reading for teenagers generally as well as for individuals with Asperger syndrome' - Tess Coll, autism outreach teacher 'The Asperger Love Guide is recommended reading for those with Asperger's syndrome who are seeking or within a relationship. The authors provide a clear explanation of how the characteristics of Asperger's syndrome can affect the development of a relationship and the expression of love. They then provide sound practical advice for individuals and couples. I really enjoyed reading The Asperger Love Guide and will be recommending the book to my clients' -- Professor Tony Attwood 'This is the first book I've read in a long time that, once started, I couldn't put down until it was finished. It is an exceptionally good read. The 77 pages are written succinctly with no waffle - just straight to the point. I will definitely buy a copy of this book for the whole family to use! I will use it to guide Joe (my 17 year old Asperger son) when he's ready for it. It's not a book he would read himself; in fact I read the section "the merits of single life" out loud to him a bit like a bed time story' - Action for ASD 'There is a great need for more awareness of Asperger syndrome and how it affects personal relationships. The National Autistic Society find this a helpful guide' - Cathy Mercer, NAS 'This book sets out some helpful facts about relationships in a neat, simple form' - Asperger United 'An excellent self 'help-text'...the book is a clear and matter-of-fact guide to relationships and is unapologetic in offering straightforward and helpful advice for romantic success...Not a word is wasted, and as well as being highly recommended for individuals with Asperger's Syndrome, should also be read by education professionals supporting young people with Asperger's Syndrome in schools, colleges and universities' - SENCO Update 'Aimed primarily at individuals with Asperger syndrome, this very readable book is in fact of use to a much wider audience. The issues are discussed openly and logically and the advice given is both sympathetic and very matter of fact...The book breaks down the social, emotional and practical aspects of relationships so usefully that it is a good resource for teachers and others working with neurotypical individuals. Infact the book so sensibly discusses pitfalls, strategies and individual responsibilities that it would be valuable reading for teenagers generally as well as for individuals with Asperger syndrome' - British Journal of Special Education Material based on the experiences of the people on the Autistic Spectrum is usually written by neurotypical writers. Here, Genevieve and Dean, both adults with Asperger's Syndrome, share their advice and tips for romantic success. The chapters cover: o building self-esteem; o the best places to meet potential partners; o dating; o maintaining relationships. Both authors work with the Asperger community, either providing support or training, so their insight is based upon other people's experiences as well as their own. This is shown in a number of case studies that support the elements described in each chapter. They write in a clear, accessible and non-patronizing way which will suit their audience. This will prove to be an invaluable book to those with Asperger's or those that support Asperger people. Dean Worton is a 31 year-old high functioning individual with a very positive expression of Asperger Syndrome. He runs a successful UK-based website for adults with Asperger Syndrome and hosts real-life meet-ups around the UK for its members. His key interest is in encouraging adults with AS to live positively and successfully with the gifts that Asperger Syndrome provides. He also works in adminstration and resides in North-West England. Genevieve Edmonds is a 23 year old with 'residual' Asperger Syndrome, which she views as a significant gift. She works as an associate of the Missing Link Support Service in Lancashire supporting those 'disabled by society' including individuals with ASD. She speaks and writes frequently in the field of Autism, along with giving training, workshops and soon counselling. She aims to empower those with ASD, carers and professionals in the understanding of Asperger Syndrome as a difference rather than an impairment. She lives and works in a solution-focused way and is based in North-West England

Chasing Hope Writers of the Round Table Press

Christine Walker's son was just four years old when he was diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar disorder, and autism. In 2004, knowledge of and resources for childhood mental illness were scarce and Christine was thrust into a lonely maze of figuring out which treatments, therapies, and medications could help her child. In the decade since his diagnosis, Christine often wished for a manual, a guide that would pass on "real deal" mom-to-mom information and tips she needed to sometimes just get through the day and ultimately to help her family navigate this maze with knowledge, grace, humor, and love. For those at the beginning of the journey, this is that manual. "Chasing Hope is a GPS for any family raising a child with special needs. Written by a parent on the journey, Christine Walker gives not only hope to parents, but simple, effective, and meaningful steps to be part of policy solutions." -Former Congressman John Edward Porter Founder of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus Former chairman of PBS and Trustee Emeritus, JFK Center for the Performing Arts "Christine Walker's Chasing Hope presents a candid portrayal of an ongoing journey. The trip chronicles her emotion-filled experiences related to seeking answers and solutions for her son who has significant disabilities. Chasing Hope honestly addresses the sadness, disappointment, frustration, and anger. It also captures the hope and happiness associated with her son. This book, which highlights extensive and exhaustive searching, offers tremendous insights to families with children with significant needs. Chasing Hope should be read by all parents, educators, and physicians." -Dr. Tim Thomas Northern Suburban Special Education District Superintendent "The Zen philosopher Alan Watts echoed the wisdom I've gleaned from the lake. 'The only way to make sense out of change,' he said, 'is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.'" -Phil Jackson (quoting Alan Watts) 11-time NBA championship and Hall of Fame coach "Chasing Hope is not only a resource for families with children with autism and mental illness, but for policy makers as well. Schuyler's story illustrates a serious policy failure. Mrs. Walker's willingness to share her family's story in such an authentic manner is exceptional, and exemplifies the fearlessness she has shown throughout Schuyler's journey. The resolution of policy failures is only possible when brave families, like the Walkers, give voice to the issues. That Mrs. Walker had to become an expert in Schuyler's condition and the policy options available is heartbreaking, but her commitment to sharing the knowledge she acquired will undeniably help countless families." -Dr. Angela Fontes Northwestern University "As a health professional and parent of a child with ASD I found myself reliving many of the emotions and feelings that were evoked by this book. The struggle to get the right diagnosis and treatment will strike a cord with parents. Some of the writing was so true to life that it raised the hairs on the back of my neck; reading about how driven a parent can become in this situation was fantastic. The lack of help for these children is an international problem and it is important for health professionals, policy makers, and other parents to hear such stories so that further action can be taken to improve help for future generations. I would encourage everyone who has an interest in this area to read this account and to reflect on the issues raised." -Dr. Khalid Karim Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow, University of Leicester, England Consultant Child and Adolescent P

Tender Moments of Saffron Silk Phoenix Yard Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Book 6 of the Kingdom of Silk series. The books explore important themes of love, loss, friendships, home and belonging, in ways that pull at the heartstrings but are never over-sentimental. Honey for the soul. Everyone knows that Saffron Silk has a talent for pretending to be someone else but when the firebirds rage inside her head, and it hurts even to breathe, Saffron barely has the energy to be herself.Saffron's family don't know about the firebirds that come to warn her of terrible headaches. And Saffron doesn't know how to tell them. But her brother Perry Angel has learnt to read hearts and recognise tender moments, and Perry knows that Saffron is frightened.Frightened of what might be wrong with her and afraid that she might have to leave the Kingdom of Silk forever...In Glenda Millard's beautifully written and multi-award-winning Kingdom of Silk series, we meet the uncommon Silk family. Parents Ben and Annie Silk have a brood of five daughters ('the Rainbow Girls'), a son named Griffin, Griffin's best friend Layla who 'might as well be a Silk', Nell - the 'tiny bit magic' fairy grandmother, and Perry Angel - an adopted son who joins the Silk family. REVIEWS: "Every action, every sentiment, every character amongst the pages of this book is a manifesto for family, for joy, for being kind, for never failing to show someone you love them, and for never ever failing to recognise the tiny tender moments that make one's life complete. Those tiny tender moments, they are those that "make the soul tipsy with ordinary happiness". This is why I love this series so much; it reminds us that true happiness is found in the simplest things." -- LIBRARY MICE. "Millard weaves difficult issues in a non-threatening way, but her language is so lyrical and poetic (but without lashings of sentimentality) you cannot helped but be moved." -- SHARON F JONES BLOG. "Like with many other books I review I ended up reading book first, then the previous 4/5 books, then I reread this one. I'm glad I was able to read the others (thanks to the lovely publicist), because my initial thoughts were that Saffron's father was a bit of a lunatic, her family was a bit too wacky, and I didn't entirely understand the various relationships. The first time round I fully related to Saffron's fear of what was wrong with her, just because it is so scary having your body do things which you've no control over & don't understand. The care and support of her friends and family made me cry (I cry when I'm happy, sad, & overwhelmed), especially that of Perry whose personal sacrifice I fully understood when I read the stories where he first appears. This entire series is such a sweet read, covering emotionally complex issues in a way that makes sense. I want a grandmother like Nell! She is heaps of fun, sees the positive in everything, and knows that not everyone can learn the same way, which is why Perry ends up being homeschooled 2 days a week and attending school for the rest. It is never openly said (as far as I can remember) but it's obvious that Perry has some form of Autism or Aspergers, and the way his adopted brother and sisters view him is touching. I loved how Layla brightens everyone's life after their dear sister Tishkin passes away. I admire Saffron's parents for sticking with their way of life and not minding what other people think, for picking meaningful names, for being able to follow their dreams. Liking handicrafts made me like Saffron's dad being a wood carver and a baker - the naming books sounds exquisite! This is a series I'll reread because they are touching, and the illustrations heighten the meaning behind the story. A family focused read with lots of grandmother magic!" -- NAYU'S READING CORNER. "Glenda Millard's Kingdom of Silk books have won many awards in her native Australia, and no wonder: there are very few books, for children or adults, which describe love so clearly or so lyrically. There are seven books in the series, The Tender Moments of Saffron Silk is number six, and it is definitely worth reading them all, and in order, to really get to know the Silks. They are an uncommon lot: the rest of the world might see them as eccentric, even weird, that doesn't bother them at all. Parents Ben and Annie have five daughters ('the Rainbow Girls'), a son named Griffin and an adopted son, Perry Angel, who joins the family midway through the series. Nell is 'the tiny bit magic' grandmother, and Layla, Griffin's best friend, understands them so well she 'might as well be a Silk'. They live on a beautiful plot of land in the Australian countryside, and Millard evokes the sense of place beautifully. Each book describes a different event in their lives, but the emphasis is always on themes of love, friendship and belonging. In The Tender Moments of Saffron Silk, Saffron, the youngest and most dreamy of the Rainbow Girls isn't well. She has terrible headaches, accompanied by blinding lights she thinks of as firebirds. The Silks have already lost one daughter, baby Tishkin, and everyone is scared for Saffron. Little Perry is the one to realise just how frightened Saffron herself is though, and to work out what special help she needs. Everything ends well, and a small Silk miracle takes place at the hospital. Millard has a light touch and avoids sentimentality, this is another beautiful and affecting read." -- LOVEREADING.
