In a Different Key The Story of Autism Penguin Books

Wydawnictwa naukowe i popularno-naukowe

?A magnificent opus ...extraordinary, spellbinding ...this book does what no other on autism has done? Ann Bauer, Washington Post The stunning history of autism as it has been discovered and felt by parents, children and doctors Nearly seventy-five years ago, Donald Triplett of Forest, Mississippi became the first child diagnosed with autism. In a Different Key tells the extraordinary story of the world his diagnosis created - a riveting human drama that takes us across continents and through some of the great social movements of the twentieth century. The history of autism is, above all, the story of families fighting for a place in the world for their children. It is the story of women like Ruth Sullivan, who rebelled against a medical establishment that blamed ?refrigerator mothers? for causing autism, of fathers who pushed scientists to dig harder for treatments, of parents who forced schools to accept their children. But many others played starring roles too: doctors like Leo Kanner, who pioneered our understanding of autism, scientists who sparred over how to treat autism, and those with autism, like Temple Grandin and Ari Ne?eman, who explained their inner worlds and championed a philosophy of ?neurodiversity?. This is also a story of fierce controversy: from the question of whether there is truly an autism ?epidemic?, and whether vaccines played a part in it, to scandals involving ?facilitated communication?, one of many treatments that have proved to be blind alleys. And there are dark turns too: we learn about experimenters feeding LSD to children with autism, or shocking them with electricity to change their behaviour; and the authors reveal, for the first time, that Hans Asperger, discoverer of the syndrome named after him, may have cooperated with the Nazis in sending disabled children to their deaths. By turns intimate and panoramic, In a Different Key takes us on a journey from an era when families were shamed and children were condemned to institutions, to one in which parents and people with autism push not simply for inclusion, but for a new understanding of autism: as difference rather than disability.

The Reason I Jump Hodder & Stoughton

Written by Naoki Higashida when he was only thirteen, this remarkable book provides a rare insight into the often baffling behaviour of autistic children. Using a question and answer format, Naoki explains things like why he talks loudly or repeats the same questions, what causes him to have panic attacks, and why he likes to jump. He also shows the way he thinks and feels about his world - other people, nature, time and beauty, and himself. Abundantly proving that people with autism do possess imagination, humour and empathy, he also makes clear how badly they need our compassion, patience and understanding. David Mitchell and his wife have translated Naoki's book so that it might help others dealing with autism and generally illuminate a little-understood condition. It gives us an exceptional chance to enter the mind of another and see the world from a strange and fascinating perspective. The book also features eleven original illustrations, inspired by Naoki's words, by the artistic duo Kai and Sunny.

Living With Jonathan Watkins Publishing

Sheila Barton's memoir of autism is inspiring. Finding herself, at thirty years old, with a son with autism and severe learning disabilities, she set about learning how to live a different kind of life and be a different kind of mother. This is the story, told with passion, intelligence and humour, of their journey from darkness into light. It is written out of anguish and anger, but also out of hope and love. The book opens and closes with a real-life snapshot: the first from when Jonathan was nine, the second from when he was twenty-three. The first is told from the edge of despair. The second is upbeat - the day is one of happiness for Jonny and for his mother. Autism has been integrated into their world - they have survived it. The chapters in between tell the amazing story of their life together and how they dealt with diagnosis, birth, school, brothers and sisters, travel, therapies, obsessions, grief and sex. Sheila writes movingly of the heartbreak and the joy, the terror and the liberation. Her son is now in his late twenties and she and Jonny began their journey into this strange and difficult world when understanding of autism was very poor. Today, autism is diagnosed more often and attracts more media attention than ever before. This is the story of the triumph of hope and love over pain and sadness. It is a compelling manifesto for greater understanding of those who are born 'different'. Its ending is one of empowerment and joy. 'This is a book we all should read. A remarkable human story, a remarkable piece of writing.' - Jon Snow, journalist and broadcaster 'I loved this book. Vivid and lively writing draws a picture of the ups and downs of family life with a child with autism. The overwhelming love she feels for her children and her spirited responses to setbacks are a joy.' - Clare Coombe-Tennant, trustee of TreeHouse

Painful Gift Darton,Longman & Todd Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This beautifully illustrated, moving and revelatory book will inspire readers to see that it is often that which gives us the deepest sorrow in life that can bring us the greatest joy. 'Welcome to my world. I have autism. 'But A Painful Gift is not about my autism. It is about the struggle to be truly ourselves in the world. To be fully human, to touch people and to be touched by people in return. 'Autism is a blessing, a gifted way of seeing the world. It is also deeply misunderstood. There is much talk of finding a cure for autism, but it is only our inability to accept difference that cries out to be remedied. 'Although autism is a gift, it can be a painful gift. I have shared my woundedness in full so that you might be given the strength to bring to light your woundedness. Great love and great suffering are part of the spiritual journey. Suffering can not only break us down, it can also break us open. This book is a pilgrimage of the mind to the heart and is a testimony to the fact that it is not the absence of affliction that makes us who we are, but our faithfulness in adversity that is the deeper measure. 'My deepest prayer is that all who read this book will be inspired to see that it is often that which gives us the deepest sorrow in life that can bring us the greatest joy.' Christopher Goodchild

Tender Moments of Saffron Silk Phoenix Yard Books

Book 6 of the Kingdom of Silk series. The books explore important themes of love, loss, friendships, home and belonging, in ways that pull at the heartstrings but are never over-sentimental. Honey for the soul. Everyone knows that Saffron Silk has a talent for pretending to be someone else but when the firebirds rage inside her head, and it hurts even to breathe, Saffron barely has the energy to be herself.Saffron's family don't know about the firebirds that come to warn her of terrible headaches. And Saffron doesn't know how to tell them. But her brother Perry Angel has learnt to read hearts and recognise tender moments, and Perry knows that Saffron is frightened.Frightened of what might be wrong with her and afraid that she might have to leave the Kingdom of Silk forever...In Glenda Millard's beautifully written and multi-award-winning Kingdom of Silk series, we meet the uncommon Silk family. Parents Ben and Annie Silk have a brood of five daughters ('the Rainbow Girls'), a son named Griffin, Griffin's best friend Layla who 'might as well be a Silk', Nell - the 'tiny bit magic' fairy grandmother, and Perry Angel - an adopted son who joins the Silk family. REVIEWS: "Every action, every sentiment, every character amongst the pages of this book is a manifesto for family, for joy, for being kind, for never failing to show someone you love them, and for never ever failing to recognise the tiny tender moments that make one's life complete. Those tiny tender moments, they are those that "make the soul tipsy with ordinary happiness". This is why I love this series so much; it reminds us that true happiness is found in the simplest things." -- LIBRARY MICE. "Millard weaves difficult issues in a non-threatening way, but her language is so lyrical and poetic (but without lashings of sentimentality) you cannot helped but be moved." -- SHARON F JONES BLOG. "Like with many other books I review I ended up reading book first, then the previous 4/5 books, then I reread this one. I'm glad I was able to read the others (thanks to the lovely publicist), because my initial thoughts were that Saffron's father was a bit of a lunatic, her family was a bit too wacky, and I didn't entirely understand the various relationships. The first time round I fully related to Saffron's fear of what was wrong with her, just because it is so scary having your body do things which you've no control over & don't understand. The care and support of her friends and family made me cry (I cry when I'm happy, sad, & overwhelmed), especially that of Perry whose personal sacrifice I fully understood when I read the stories where he first appears. This entire series is such a sweet read, covering emotionally complex issues in a way that makes sense. I want a grandmother like Nell! She is heaps of fun, sees the positive in everything, and knows that not everyone can learn the same way, which is why Perry ends up being homeschooled 2 days a week and attending school for the rest. It is never openly said (as far as I can remember) but it's obvious that Perry has some form of Autism or Aspergers, and the way his adopted brother and sisters view him is touching. I loved how Layla brightens everyone's life after their dear sister Tishkin passes away. I admire Saffron's parents for sticking with their way of life and not minding what other people think, for picking meaningful names, for being able to follow their dreams. Liking handicrafts made me like Saffron's dad being a wood carver and a baker - the naming books sounds exquisite! This is a series I'll reread because they are touching, and the illustrations heighten the meaning behind the story. A family focused read with lots of grandmother magic!" -- NAYU'S READING CORNER. "Glenda Millard's Kingdom of Silk books have won many awards in her native Australia, and no wonder: there are very few books, for children or adults, which describe love so clearly or so lyrically. There are seven books in the series, The Tender Moments of Saffron Silk is number six, and it is definitely worth reading them all, and in order, to really get to know the Silks. They are an uncommon lot: the rest of the world might see them as eccentric, even weird, that doesn't bother them at all. Parents Ben and Annie have five daughters ('the Rainbow Girls'), a son named Griffin and an adopted son, Perry Angel, who joins the family midway through the series. Nell is 'the tiny bit magic' grandmother, and Layla, Griffin's best friend, understands them so well she 'might as well be a Silk'. They live on a beautiful plot of land in the Australian countryside, and Millard evokes the sense of place beautifully. Each book describes a different event in their lives, but the emphasis is always on themes of love, friendship and belonging. In The Tender Moments of Saffron Silk, Saffron, the youngest and most dreamy of the Rainbow Girls isn't well. She has terrible headaches, accompanied by blinding lights she thinks of as firebirds. The Silks have already lost one daughter, baby Tishkin, and everyone is scared for Saffron. Little Perry is the one to realise just how frightened Saffron herself is though, and to work out what special help she needs. Everything ends well, and a small Silk miracle takes place at the hospital. Millard has a light touch and avoids sentimentality, this is another beautiful and affecting read." -- LOVEREADING.
