Hailed by Toni Morrison as "required reading," a bold and personal literary exploration of America's racial history by "the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States" ( The New York Observer ) §§"This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it."§§In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation's history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of "race," a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men-bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?§§Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates's attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son-and readers-the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children's lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.§§Praise for Between the World and Me §§"I've been wondering who might fill the intellectual void that plagued me after James Baldwin died. Clearly it is Ta-Nehisi Coates. The language of Between the World and Me, like Coates's journey, is visceral, eloquent, and beautifully redemptive. And its examination of the hazards and hopes of black male life is as profound as it is revelatory. This is required reading." -Toni Morrison§§"Ta-Nehisi Coates is the James Baldwin of our era, and this is his cri de coeur . A brilliant thinker at the top of his powers, he has distilled four hundred years of history and his own anguish and wisdom into a prayer for his beloved son and an invocation to the conscience of his country. Between the World and Me is an instant classic and a gift to us all." -Isabel Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Other Suns §§"Immense, multifaceted . . . This is a poet's book, revealing the sensibility of a writer to whom words-exact words-matter. . . . As a meditation on race in America, haunted by the bodies of black men, women, and children, Coates's compelling, indeed stunning, work is rare in its power to make you want to slow down and read every word. This is a book that will be hailed as a classic of our time." - Publishers Weekly (starred review)§§"The powerful story of a father's past and a son's future . . . Coates offers this eloquent memoir as a letter to his teenage son, bearing witness to his own experiences and conveying passionate hopes for his son's life. . . . This moving, potent testament might have been titled Black Lives Matter ." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The Relationship Between Self-Beliefs And Academic Achievement - 2834694102

The Relationship Between Self-Beliefs And Academic Achievement LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In response to the seemingly pervasive and intractable question of the academic achievement gap between minority Black and Hispanic students on the one hand and their urban white counterparts on the other, most scholarly efforts have hitherto been directed at the so-called hard variables such as family structure and family process, the student s environment both at home and at school and the socio-economic status of their parents as the likely culprits. Taking a cue from other studies that have attracted little scholarly and which have showed students pointing at psychological factors as having the greatest effect on their academic achievement, this study set out to examine the influence of two of such factors - perceived self-efficacy and locus of control - on two identical groups of students. The consistent difference in the scores between these two groups of students on the instruments devised to measure the two factors identified the so-called soft variables - perceived self-efficacy and locus of control - as trumping all other factors and as worthy of more attention by researchers as well as stakeholders in education.

Black and White Masculinity in Uncle Tom's Cabin - 2826986330

Black and White Masculinity in Uncle Tom's Cabin GRIN Verlag

Document from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim (Anglistisches Seminar, International Cultural Studies), course: Sugar: Culture of Capitalism and Slavery, language: English, abstract: Uncle Tom s Cabin is the most influential literary work with regard to the discussion of slavery of the 18th and 19th century America. In her novel, Harriet Beecher Stowe aims to draw society s attention to the inhumanity of its system with the help of the novel s protagonist, Uncle Tom, and various other characters, both black and white. In so doing, she presents different types of femininity and masculinity which help to point out the nature of the system of slavery. Generally speaking, women in Beecher Stowe s work present abolitionist ideas stating the evil of the system whereas the depiction of male characters is more complex. This paper seeks to examine the types of masculinity in Uncle Tom s Cabin, distinguishing between good and bad, black and white masculinity embodied in the characterization of the characters.§§Masculinity has always been associated with physical strength and muscles, toughness and power but most of all courage. This paper, however, will not only address masculinity as such but will also show that masculinity is courage by softness and religious faith. Harriet Beecher Stowe disguises variations of masculinity in her characters: Bad white masculinity is depicted in the behavior of the plantation owner Simon Legree in contrast to the Kentuckian Mr. Shelby and Mr. Augustine St. Clare from New Orleans who imply good white masculinity. The latter two may depict an intermediate position between bad white and black masculinity presented by the slaves Uncle Tom and George Harris. Since Uncle Tom s Cabin is considered to be a novel in favor of the abolition of slavery, black masculinity is unlikely to be presented badly. This paper therefore focuses on the above-mentioned characters and how they present different types of masculinity, also in relation to how they treat other human beings.

This is an attempt at uncovering to which extent and in what way the reporting on violence in South Africa's English language press between 1976 and 2002 has influenced white South Africans' views of their country. Throughout the period under investigation, newspapers approached violence with racial concepts in mind. Their (largely white) in-group and the (mainly black) out-group were shown to be facing each other from opposite ends of the good-bad spectrum, and the concept of violence was lexicalised accordingly. My research confirmed that white South Africans' attitudes towards violence display a striking resemblance to this view. This suggests that the newspapers did more than inform their readers about the world. Their choice of subjects frequently influenced how South Africans defined violence and their way of approaching these subjects was important in constituting the public's view of them. It is therefore beyond doubt that the English language press helped to structure and limit people's interpretive frameworks. They worked to define what was seen as violence and provided the language to describe the individual incidents. They constituted reality; made history so to speak.

Maryland in Black and White JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Between 1935 and 1943, the United States government commissioned forty-four photographers to capture American faces, along with living and working conditions, across the country. Nearly 180,000 photographs were taken - 4,000 in Maryland - and they are now preserved in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Constance B. Schulz presents a selection of these images in Maryland in Black and White. Maryland in the 1930s and early '40s truly represented a microcosm of America, a middle ground where beach and mountain, north and south, urban and rural, black and white, farmer and businessman, rich and poor, young and old met. This period also witnessed a turning point in the state's history. The pace and nature of change varied from region to region, but even in areas that seemed most resistant to it-the Chesapeake Bay, where oyster tongers harvested their catch using methods unchanged for centuries, or the mountains and streams of Garrett County, where the seasons timelessly repeated themselves - the momentum toward a modern economy, influenced if not dominated by urban and national concerns, had significant impact. Within these pages, the farms and coal fields of 1930s and '40s Western Maryland, the tobacco fields of Southern Maryland, watermen in wooden boats along the Eastern Shore, and smiling couples dancing at a wartime senior prom come back to life. These photographs reveal places we know but scarcely recognize and give us another look at the people of "the greatest generation."

"Black, White and in Colour" offers a long-awaited collection of major essays by Hortense Spillers, one of the most influential and inspiring black critics of the past 20 years. Spanning her work from the early 1980s, in which she pioneered a broadly poststructuralist approach to African American literature, and extending through her turn to cultural studies in the 1990s, these essays display her passionate commitment to reading as a fundamentally political act - one pivotal to rewriting the humanist project. Spillers is probably best known for her race-centred revision of psychoanalytic theory and for her subtle account of the relationships between race and gender. She has also given literary criticism some of its most powerful readings of individual authors, represented here in seminal essays on Ralph Ellison, Gwendolyn Brooks, and William Faulkner. Other essays such as "Who Cuts the Border?" consider the effect of migration on the black cultural experience. "Moving on Down the Line" opens a fascinating window onto the African American sermon. "A Hateful Passion, a Lost Love" contrasts fiction by Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurtston and Margaret Walker. A new preface and introduction that appear here for the first time trace the trajectory of the author's career and point the way toward new lines of inquiry. Ultimately, the essays collected in "Black, White and in Colour" all share Spillers's signature style: heady, eclectic, and astonishingly productive of new ideas. Anyone interested in African American culture and literature should want to read them.
