Building Parsers with Java Addison-Wesley

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

No programming language can solve every problem, but Java can be extended to solve a far wider range of problems through the use of parsers -- "mini-languages" that bridge the gap between humans and computers, and offer targeted solutions for specific problem domains. In Building Parsers with Java(TM), Steven John Metsker presents the first complete, start-to-finish guide to building parsers with Java. Metsker first explains what a parser is, introduces the building blocks of applied parsers, shows how to compose new parsers from existing ones; and walks step-by-step through designing, coding, and testing a working parser. Next, he presents in-depth coverage of creating Java-based parsers for a wide range of problem domains. You'll learn how to create parsers that can read elements of a data language; how to transform a grammar, ensuring the correct behavior of operators in a language; how to build arithmetic and regular expression parsers, and more. Metsker shows how to extend existing parser toolkits, and introduces a logic engine that can be used in a wide range of parsers, including both logic and query languages.

This book is intended for anyone starting out with PHP programming. If you've previously worked in another programming language such as Java, C#, or Perl, you'll probably pick up the concepts in the earlier chapters quickly; however, the book assumes no prior experience of programming or of building Web applications. That said, because PHP is primarily a Web technology, it will help if you have at least some knowledge of other Web technologies, particularly HTML and CSS. Many Web applications make use of a database to store data, and this book contains three chapters on working with MySQL databases. Once again, if you're already familiar with databases in general -- and MySQL in particular -- you'll be able to fly through these chapters. However, even if you've never touched a database before in your life, you should still be able to pick up a working knowledge by reading through these chapters. What This Book Covers This book gives you a broad understanding of the PHP language and its associated technologies. You explore a wide range of topics, including: installing a copy of the PHP engine on Ubuntu Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X;other ways you can install or use PHP; how to write a simple PHP script. basic PHP language concepts. variables, data types, operators, expressions, and constants. how to change the flow of your scripts by creating decisions and loops. if , else , and switch statements; the ternary operator; and the do , while , for , break , and continue statements. how to nest loops, and how to mix decisions and looping with blocks of HTML. PHP's handling of strings, or sequences of characters; how to create strings; how to retrieve characters from a string; and how to manipulate strings with functions such as strlen() , substr() , strstr() , strpos() , str-replace() , and printf() , to name but a few. arrays -- variables that can hold multiple values. You learn the difference between indexed and associative arrays, and find out how to create arrays and access their individual elements; array manipulation, including functions such as print-r() , array-slice() , count() , sort() , array-merge() , and list() . You also learn how to create foreach loops, as well as how to work with multidimensional arrays. functions -- blocks of code that you can use again and again. You look at how to call built-in functions, and how to work with variable functions. You also study how to create your own functions, including defining parameters, returning values, understanding scope, and using anonymous functions. Other function-related topics such as references and recursion are also explored. object-oriented programming. You look at the advantages of an object-oriented approach, and learn how to build classes, properties, and methods, and how to create and use objects. You also explore more advanced topics such as overloading, inheritance, interfaces, constructors and destructors, autoloading, and namespaces. how to use PHP to create interactive Web forms. You learn how to create HTML forms, how to capture form data in PHP, and how to use PHP to generate dynamic forms. You also explore file upload forms and page redirection. how to preserve an application's state between page views. You explore three different strategies: query strings, cookies, and PHP sessions. Includes an example user login system. PHP's file and directory handling functions. You learn how to open and close files; how to find out more information about a file; how to read from and write to files; how to work with file permissions; how to copy, rename, and delete files; and how to manipulate directories.Simple text editor as an example. databases in general and MySQL in particular, and how to work with MySQL databases using PHP. You learn some database and SQL theory; look at how to connect to MySQL from PHP; and study how to retrieve, insert, update, and delete data in a MySQL database. PEAR, the PHP Extension and Application Repository. It's a large collection of reusable code modules that can really help to speed up your application development. You look at how to install and use PEAR packages, and explore three useful packages: Net-UserAgent-Detect , HTML-Table , and HTML-QuickForm . ways that your PHP applications can interact with the outside world.A detailed look at date and time handling, including various useful built-in date functions, as well as the DateTime and DateTimeZone classes. Also how to work closely with HTTP request and response headers, how to retrieve Web server information, and how to send email from within your scripts. using PHP to generate graphics on the fly. You study some computer graphics fundamentals, then look at how to create new images, as well as modify existing images. Along the way you explore colors, drawing functions, image formats, transparency, opacity, and generating text within images. regular expressions. These clever pattern-matching tools let you search for very specific patterns of text within strings; regular expression syntax, how to use PHP's regular expression functions to search for and replace patterns of text. Lots of examples are included to make the concepts clear. XML -- eXtensible Markup Language -- and how to manipulate XML from within your PHP scripts. You learn about XML and its uses, and look at various ways to read and write XML with PHP, including XML Parser, the XML DOM extension, and SimpleXML. You also take a brief look at XML stylesheets, including XSL and XSLT. how to configure PHP, and all the configuration directives available. alternative databases to MySQL that are supported by PHP. using PHP to write command-line scripts, further enhancing the power and flexibility of your applications. Also, as you'd imagine, this book covers the new features added to PHP in version 5.3. However, if you're still using an older version of PHP, don't panic -- the vast majority of the book applies to all versions of PHP.

Excerpt: Wild Side Story is a stage show that originated as an underground happening in Miami Beach, Florida in 1973. From that year until the end of production in 2004, it was performed hundreds of times in Florida, Sweden, California and Spain. This cult stage show was first conceived and created in Miami Beach in 1972 by director Lars Jacob for an underground cast of nine poorly paid performers who were in it for the kicks, using stage names such as Rena Del Rio, Peaches Del Monte, Chiena Chinette, Jessica Kilo, Tom Flavio, Crystal Beed and Aretha Filthy so as not to disclose their actual identities. Most were young Cuban refugees. One exception was Roxanne Russell who eventually achieved national notoriety and began to use his real name Logan Carter. Late night snapshot of Del Rio, Carter, Del Monte with Tony Del Valle, Tampa, April 27, 1974.The piece was originally called West Side Tuna because of their preceding highly charismatic, but theatrically needy production, The Hot Tuna Revue, in which, as Del Rio later admitted, "We were just giving faces". It opened officially as Wild Side Story on August 8, 1973. Original cast at Ambassador III in 1973Moved two blocks up 22nd Street the following month by club owner Larry Boxx, from the shady old Ambassador III lounge to his brand new Stonewall disco, Wild Side Story reopened there on September 3, 1973, closer to a popular public beach. It now established itself as albeit bizarre but exciting after-midnight entertainment for more diverse crowds. Many were young tourists who would not have planned to go to a gay bar and now saw transvestite characters on stage (and some in the room) for the very first time. The move also brought a revamp of the cast of characters, partly and loosely built on those of West Side Story, with Jacob henceforth casting real girls in leading parts "Anita" and "Betty-Sue". One supporting part continued to call for a female to play a meretric...

Why I Run Darcy

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Why I Run is my story of fighting depression. Read about this unique experience from someone who experienced it firsthand, as this book has not been written by a doctor or a therapist. My story is honest, bold, and most of all truthful. This book runs walks you through the thoughts and feelings of a depressed man who has beaten himself up for most of his life. It takes you to the edge of where the darkest thoughts and actions are to times of true depression and heartbreaking desperation. From there it shows how hard it can be to ask for help and to actually accept this help by going to therapy for the first time and confronting my worst fears. I ask tough real life questions and learn to answer them over time with hard work. This book is all about change and the struggle to embrace new ways of thinking while being open about what depression really is. The narrative moves through different types of therapy and reveals how at first I was so reluctant to do the things I was being taught. Read about how I rebuilt my life from the bottom up by healing old traumas with new therapies (EMDR). Witness the highs and the lows of fighting every day as I learn that depression can only be beaten with self love and practice and then more practice. Understand that feeling good for a depressed man or woman can feel bad at first but then become natural over time. The story moves from the deepest depths of depression to the most incredible highs from learning to fight and embrace the new tools I am given. Follow my journey from wanting to disappear and kill myself to practicing yoga, running, and meditation and loving who I am. Listen to why I stop playing music altogether to learn to play for myself for the first time. Witness how I ultimately overcome anxiety, beat guilt, and attack the building blocks of depression by looking it in the eye, fighting, and winning in the end. I have written this book in the hopes of killing the stigma attached to depression and opening up conversations that have never been opened before. For people who suffer every day in silence I offer hope that they can live a full life one day with hard work. For those of you who have friends and family members who suffer from depression, I would like to help you understand what depression really is.

Simple Rules for a Complex World HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

It is often considered that too many laws is one of the necessary consequences of a complex society. Many insist that any call for legal simplification smacks of nostalgia and sentimentality. Richard Epstein believes, however, that the conventional view has it backward. The richer texture of American modern society allows for more individual freedom and choice, permitting the organization of a comprehensive legal order capable of meeting the technological and social challenges of today on the basis of just six core principles. The first four rules, which regulate human interactions in ordinary social life, concern the autonomy of the individual, property, contract and tort. Taken together these rules establish and protect consistent entitlements over all resources, both human and natural. These rules are backstopped by two more rules that permit forced exchanges on payment of just compensation when private or public necessity so dictates. Epstein then uses these six building blocks to clarify several intractable problems in the modern legal landscape. His discussion of employment contracts explains the hidden virtues of contracts at will and exposes the weaknesses of laws regarding collective bargaining, unjust dismissal, employer discrimination and comparable worth. Epstein's analysis shows how laws governing liability for products and professional services, corporate transactions and environmental protection have generated unnecessary social strife and economic dislocation by violating these basic principles. This text offers an agenda for social reform that undoes many of the problems of the modern regulatory state. At a time when most Americans have come to distrust and fear government at all levels, Epstein shows how a consistent application of economic and political theory allows us to steer a middle path between too much and too little.
