History's greatest love story, Catherine the Great and Potemkin is a sweeping epic of sex, love, power, conquest and extravagance on a magnificent Russian scale. Not only was their romance wildly passionate, but they were also probably the most successful political partnership of all, outstripping Antony and Cleopatra or Napoleon and Josephine. Their secret letters, which discuss other lovers, sex, wars, politics, arts and health, are surely the most intimate and extraordinary ever written by an empress or politician.

Opis - Druga w wielkim stylu biografia pióra autora "Stalina. Dworu czerwonego cara". Owiane legendą życie carycy Rosji, Katarzyny Wielkiej, i jej ekscentrycznego przyjaciela, kochanka, męża stanu, Grigorija Potiomkina, Simon Sebag Montefiore przedstawia na szerokim tle XVIII-wiecznej Rosji, tworząc wspaniałą panoramę epoki. "Pasjonujące, rzetelnie udokumentowane dzieło, napisane z dbałością o szczegóły i oszałamiającym rozmachem." "The New York Times Book Review" "To wspaniała opowieść, a Simon Sebag Montefiore przedstawia ją z pasją... Znakomicie rozumie politykę dworu rosyjskiego i kontekst dyplomatyczny, co nie jest łatwe, ponieważ punkt ciężkości tej opowieści przesuwa się między Sankt Petersburgiem, Wiedniem, Berlinem i Stambułem. Doskonale ukazuje związek Potiomkina z Katarzyną." Odessa was the Russian Empire's gateway to the Middle East, its greatest commercial seaport and home to one of the most vibrant Jewish communities in all of Europe. Created as a model of enlightenment by Catherine the Great, and developed by colourful adventurers such as Grigory Potemkin, Jose de Ribas and Armand de Richelieu, Odessa became a magnet for the artistic and the ambitious-from Alexander Pushkin and Isaac Babel to Zionist activist Vladimir Jabotinsky and immunologist Ilya Mechnikov. Odessa's reputation for nurturing feisty dissenters, artful raconteurs and good-natured crooks cemented its place among Europe's great cities. But in the twentieth century, pogroms devastated the Jewish community; the Russian civil war brought refugees and new rulers, the Bolsheviks; and during the Second World War, Romanian occupiers killed tens of thousands of Jews in one of the untold episodes of the Holocaust. Drawing on a wealth of original source material, historian Charles King paints a rich portrait of Odessa through the lives of its geniuses and villains, revealing how a diverse, cosmopolitan city turned against itself during the Holocaust-but also how Odessa's dream has survived in a diaspora reaching all the way to Brighton Beach, Brooklyn.

This monograph examines the contributions of landscape design to authority and to organization of public life in imperial Russia. Analyzing how tsars and nobles inscribed their political aspirations in the gardens they designed or inhabited, this study maps out a distinct trajectory in the meaning of landscape design. Based partly on archival documents, it explores the reasons for Catherine the Great's keen interest in landscape design. It reconstructs Grigorii Potemkin's attempts to transform the Crimea physically and symbolically into the garden of the empire. And it reveals the centrality of the garden for noblemen such as Andrei Bolotov and Alexander Kurakin, who expressed their political philosophy and their anxieties about unstable social relations through landscaping. The book follows the destiny of western aesthetic categories, notably of the picturesque, as they are first adopted, then transformed, and ultimately rejected. It analyzes the historical role and mythological representations of the country estate, along with Leo Tolstoy's fraught commitment to Yasnaya Polyana and his critique of estate mythology in War and Peace. Finally, this study exposes how the current fashion for gardening in Russia, in particular among New Russians, alludes to imperial landscaping culture in order to justify a retreat from the public sphere.
