This book helps Christians to understand the Buddhist mind-set and world view, and to see where there are useful points of comparison and contact. Steve explains the concerns, fears and stresses that Buddhists experience - Buddhism is not a way of harmony and cosmic unity, as Westerners tend to think - and suggests what Christians truly have to offer. Buddhism is a rapidly rising religion in the West. But few Westerners know what Buddhism is like from the inside. Steve, who made the journey from Buddhism to Christ, sets himself to compare the two faiths. The book is studded with stories, parables and illuminating observations. This book is remarkably easy to read, and Steve is an engaging and original guide.

Excerpt from The Sanctuary The exact time of his earthly career is uncertain, but it must have been between the death of the Buddha and the birth of the Christ, probably two centuries after the Blessed One. Many interesting stories have wandered down the centuries concerning him, but better than all legends is the veritable account of his discussion with Menander-Milinda, one of the Greek kings of Baktria, solving all his perplexing problems. This most interesting account may be found in Vol. XXXV. of the Sacred Books of the East, translated from the Pali language by the learned and genial Professor T. W. Rhys Davids. Excerpt from The Bible Its Origin and Nature In 1879, the late William Bross of Chicago, lieutenant-governor of Illinois in 1866-70, desiring to make some memorial of his son, Nathaniel Bross, who had died in 1856, entered into an agreement with the "Trustees of Lake Forest University," whereby there was finally transferred to the said Trustees the sum of forty thousand dollars, the income of which was to accumulate in perpetuity for successive periods of ten years, at compound interest, the accumulations of one decade to be spent in the following decade, for the purpose of stimulating the production of the best books or treatises "on the connection, relation, and mutual hearing of any practical science, or the history of our race, or the facts in any department of knowledge, with and upon the Christian Religion." In his deed of gift the founder had in view "the religion of the Bible, composed of the Old and New Testaments of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, as commonly received in the Presbyterian and other evangelical churches." Apollonius of Tyana and Other Essays (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Apollonius of Tyana and Other Essays A reformer of Greek religion from within, whose activity may have coincided with the first emergence of the Christian propaganda from Judaea, is undoubtedly an interesting historical figure. And both in ancient and in modern times Apollonius of Tyana has been made the subject of parallels which were probably never thought of by the author of his extant Life. The first of these parallels was by Hierocles, Proconsul of Bithynia under Diocletian; in which the attempt seems to have been made to show that the marvels attributed to Apollonius were better authenticated than those attributed to Christ. We do not possess this work itself; but we have the reply of Eusebius, Bishop of Caesarea and ecclesiastical historian, written after the triumph of the new faith. The most elaborate modern parallel is that of F. C. Baur, first published in 1832.1 Baur here attempts to show, not only that there are resemblances between the Life of Apollonius by Philostratus and the Gospels, but that Philostratus deliberately modelled his hero on the type set forth by the Evangelists. Though he was followed in this view by Zeller, it is now generally rejected; so that there is no need to enter into con' troversy on the subject. It remains, however, none the less interesting to try to determine the character of the reforming activity of Apollonius himself. National Danger in Romanism Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from National Danger in Romanism: Or Religion and the Nation I Wish to speak to you this afternoon on Religion and the Nation, and I have chosen three texts from the Holy Scriptures which show their relationship. In Psalms xxxiii. 12 we read, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance." In Psalms xxii. 28, "For the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is the governor among the nations." While in Matthew xxviii. 19 our Lord says, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations." The star of Bethlehem is no more the adequate symbol of Christ's presence in the world. For one radiant point, shining out into the gloom of night, is not sufficient to indicate the diffused light of his presence who came to be the Sun of righteousness. To-day the fitting type of Christ, in the world, is the radiant sun, as he mounts toward the zenith, illuminating every place and disclosing everything upon the upturned hemisphere. So Christ and Christ's truth are not to be directed merely to minute personal affairs, but are to be applied in the largest way to matters of the greatest magnitude. Personal Christianity, a Science Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Personal Christianity, a Science: The Doctrines of Jakob Boehme, the God-Taught Philosopher This work, which has been out of print for some years, was originally published under the title, "Jacob Boehme." The present title has been selected as conveying a clearer meaning of the message the book contains. In the preface of the earlier edition Dr. Franz Hartmann writes: "The following is an attempt to present an epitome of the principal doctrines of Jacob Boehme in a certain systematic order, so as to afford a general view of them and to serve as an introduction to the study of Boehme's works." "The greatest obstacle to the understanding of the mysteries of the religion of the living Christ, is the very narrow view which we have become accustomed to take of them, according to the merely external and superficial interpretation of the Old and New Testaments. A study of Boehme's writings, by means of entering into the spirit in which they were written, is sure to expand the mind and to elevate the heart of the reader, giving him a greater and more sublime conception of God, Nature, and Man, than any other book of which I know." As a result of the greatest war in history, a spiritual awakening has taken place throughout the world. Proximity of death in battle and its reflection of anxious waiting in the home, have forced a conviction that God is a reality. In these pages will be found a basis for religion which should appeal to thoughtful and earnest readers. By continued study, new thoughts will be uncovered, as the spiritual insight is opened to their discovery Jacob Boehme wrote of his works as follows: "That which is (now ignorantly) rejected by my fatherland will (in future days) joyfully be taken up by foreign nations." (Letters March 15th, 1624.) Dr. Hartmann's work is republished in the hope that many may find profit, in its study. Supernatural Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Supernatural: Or Fellowship With God Different ages have had different religious problems. Once it was the question of Monotheism. In the early Christian centuries it was the Person of Christ. At the Reformation it was the immediate access of the soul to God. To-day the great contest seems to be along the line of Naturalism. Science in the past century and a half has made enormous advances throughout the whole range of secular knowledge. It has demanded universal domain. Religion has refused to be included on the same plane as other knowledge, and science has retaliated by either ignoring it or denying its validity. Especially have its supernatural postulates been most confidently challenged. What will be the outcome? Can religion again make good its ancient isolation in a world with which science has nothing to do? Will science succeed in annihilating belief in the supernatural, and be able without it to build up in its own domain a satisfactory religion drawn entirely from natural sources? Or will it be a possible in some way to give religion, just as it is, with all its supernatural features intact, a recognized standing and established place in the world of scientific thought? Excerpt from The Septuagint Fallacy: An Indictment of Modern Criticism The Author of this excellent fragment having done me the honour of asking me to write a Foreword, it is with very real pleasure that I accede to his kind request. It is surely time that we cease to be cowed by the ipse dixit of German criticism, and that we pause to consider the actual value of the glib phrase "assured results." I would suggest that we should correct our impressions of German criticism by a consideration of the motives that seem to underlie it. (I) Dr. Newman, many years ago, warned us against the error of speaking of "tire Jewish Church" and "the Christian Church." The Church is careful to teach us that the purport of the Old Testament is to set forth Christ as the One Mediator between God and man, being Himself both God and Man. The Old Testament is (to use Bishop Westcott's forcible word) the "record" of Jesus Christ. Is it thus that the modern critical mind regards the Old Testament Scriptures? I think not. We hear that quite ridiculous and unintelligent word "Judaism" applied to the religion of the Church under the Old Covenant. Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana Doctrine Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana Doctrine: The New Buddhism The book is Brahministic and Buddhistic, Indian and Western in some aspects of philosophic thought. It is profoundly philosophic, reminding one strongly of Hegel, Berkeley and G.Gore in the earlier part, and is as hard to understand as Bishop Butlers famous Analogy; yet very practical in the latter part, therefore it has great importance arising from its high and extensive range of view. If it be, as it is more and more believed that the Mahayana Faith is not Buddhism, properly so-called, but an Asiatic form of the same Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, in Buddhistic nomenclature, differing from the old Buddhism just as the new Testament differs from the old, then it commands a world-wide interest, for in it we find an adaptation of Christianity to ancient thought in Asia, and the deepest bond of union between the different races of the East and the West, viz., the bond of a common religion. Both Christianity and the New Buddhism hold to the transcendent and the immanent forms of God; but the East emphasises more of the immanent form while the West emphasises more of the transcendent. The almost universal reception of the doctrines contained in this book by both the East and the West constitutes to my mind its highest claim to our attention; for thereby we are brought face to face with a solution of the stupendous practical problem of uniting all races in one bond of religious charity! II. The Evolution and Devolution of Buddhism. The evolution of Buddhism is seen in the new Buddhism superseding the old, and the devolution in the attempt by later writers to combine the primitive with the advanced, an absurd anachronism and impossibility. Philostratus, Vol. 1 of 2 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Philostratus, Vol. 1 of 2: In Honour of Apollonius of Tyana 'What labour took Philostratus to make a book full of lies whereby he would have had Apollonius Tyaneus in miracles match unto Christ? And when he had all done, he never found one old wife so fond to believe him.' So wrote Thomas More in his Dialogue, Bk. II (Works, p. 201 B). Old wives are easier to find now; and particularly during the last century, this caste has risen to take an honoured place in our intellectual scheme. The rapid modern revival of the credulous, and decline of the rational, habit of mind brings in a renewal of interest in Apollonius of Tyana. Brunetičre had the pleasure of remarking that the nineteenth century, which at its opening affected to regard Religion as vteux jeu, went on to spend an unprecedented deal of ink and thought and passion on religious debates. And now the difficulty is how to keep any question away from this obsession. Apollonius interests our time just because we are repeating the experiences of the third and fourth centuries: the ignoble welter of modern variations recognizes its own forecast image in those times. All the principal heresies of the early period are now thriving again: nothing of them is unpopular but the names. We have our Gnostics, our Montanists, &c. And above all we have a modern Syncretism which corresponds to those courtly polygamies of the Soul, with which the Graeco-Levantine influences under the Severian dynasty attempted to debauch Europe. John Wesley Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from John Wesley: The Man and His Mission The character and life of John Wesley have been variously represented according to the prejudice or sympathy of individuals. The evangelist was misunderstood by those who did not understand his message. Things which Scripture declares can only be spiritually discerned, are naturally mere 'enthusiasm' to the unenlightened. There was nothing surprising in Southey's characteristic assertion, that the Revival 'was not wanted' in Scotland, and that in that country 'there was no place for it.' Before the great awakening in the early years of the reign of George II., Scotland was as much in need of spiritual religion as any other part of these islands. The manner in which the cause of Christ throughout the world has benefited by the life and testimony of Wesley should teach us that he is not to be regarded as the mere founder of Methodism. Understood in its broad and proper sense, that term embraces all who were brought into the evangelical fold, while they belonged to various denominations.
