This book helps Christians to understand the Buddhist mind-set and world view, and to see where there are useful points of comparison and contact. Steve explains the concerns, fears and stresses that Buddhists experience - Buddhism is not a way of harmony and cosmic unity, as Westerners tend to think - and suggests what Christians truly have to offer. Buddhism is a rapidly rising religion in the West. But few Westerners know what Buddhism is like from the inside. Steve, who made the journey from Buddhism to Christ, sets himself to compare the two faiths. The book is studded with stories, parables and illuminating observations. This book is remarkably easy to read, and Steve is an engaging and original guide.

Works of President Edwards, Vol. 4 of 4 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Works of President Edwards, Vol. 4 of 4 These words are a complaint, which the apostle makes of a certain defect in the Christian Hebrews, to whom he wrote. Wherein we may observe, 1. What the defect complained of is, viz., a want of such a proficiency tn the knowledge of the doctrines and mysteries of religion, as might have been expected of them. The apostle complains of them, that they had not made that progress in their acquaintance with the things of divinity or things taught in the oracles of God, which they ought to have made. And he means to reprove them, not merely for their deficiency in spiritual and experimental knowledge of divine things, but for their deficiency in a doctrinal acquaintance with the principles of religion, and the truths of Christian divinity; as is evident by several things. It appears by the manner in which the apostle introduces this complaint or reproof. The occasion of his introducing it, is this: in the next verse but one preceding, he mentions Christ's being a high priest after the order of Melchizedek: "Called of God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek." This Melchizedek being in the Old Testament, which was the oracles of God, held forth as an eminent type of Christ, and the account we there have of Melchizedek containing many gospel mysteries, these the apostle was willing to point out to the Christian Hebrews. But he apprehended, that through their weakness in knowledge, and little acquaintance in mysteries of that nature, they would not understand him; and therefore breaks off for the present from saying any thing about Melchizedek. Thus, in verse 11, "Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered; seeing ye are dull of hearing;" i.e., there are many things concerning Melchizedek, which contain wonderful gospel mysteries, and which I would take notice of to you, were it not that 1 am afraid, that through your dulness and backwardness in understanding these things, you would only be puzzled and confounded by my discourse, and so receive no benefit; and that it would be too hard for you, as meat that is too strong. Excerpt from The Sanctuary The exact time of his earthly career is uncertain, but it must have been between the death of the Buddha and the birth of the Christ, probably two centuries after the Blessed One. Many interesting stories have wandered down the centuries concerning him, but better than all legends is the veritable account of his discussion with Menander-Milinda, one of the Greek kings of Baktria, solving all his perplexing problems. This most interesting account may be found in Vol. XXXV. of the Sacred Books of the East, translated from the Pali language by the learned and genial Professor T. W. Rhys Davids. Excerpt from The Supernatural We are to discriminate clearly between theology and religion, between life and the philosophy of life. My object this morning is not to expound a complete system of philosophy, but to consider the effect of the change which is taking place in philosophy upon the religious life. The object of the minister is not to expound philosophy, but to promote life. He is not a teacher of theology, but a preacher of religion. He must be a theologian; he must have a philosophy of the life which he is imparting; nevertheless, his object is not to impart the philosophy, but to use the philosophy that he may impart the life. "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly," says Christ. And then he breathes upon his disciples and says, "Receive ye the Holy Spirit. Excerpt from The Bible Its Origin and Nature In 1879, the late William Bross of Chicago, lieutenant-governor of Illinois in 1866-70, desiring to make some memorial of his son, Nathaniel Bross, who had died in 1856, entered into an agreement with the "Trustees of Lake Forest University," whereby there was finally transferred to the said Trustees the sum of forty thousand dollars, the income of which was to accumulate in perpetuity for successive periods of ten years, at compound interest, the accumulations of one decade to be spent in the following decade, for the purpose of stimulating the production of the best books or treatises "on the connection, relation, and mutual hearing of any practical science, or the history of our race, or the facts in any department of knowledge, with and upon the Christian Religion." In his deed of gift the founder had in view "the religion of the Bible, composed of the Old and New Testaments of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, as commonly received in the Presbyterian and other evangelical churches." Story of La Roche (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Story of La Roche Dear Sir: Many years ago, a very interesting and pathetic story was published, called La Roche, or the Swiss Pastor. It was much read and admired; and I doubt if it would be easy to find any one, familiar with it in youth, who could read it now without deep feeling. It is not sectarian, - but may be read with pleasure and profit by persons of any, and even of no sect. It must be useful to all,who can profit by lessons on the love of God,-on submission to his holy providence, - and on the duty of man to man. I have seldom met, of late years, with this beautiful story; - and I think it may be well to republish it as a tract. It will differ from most essays and stories bearing that name, for it contains useful teaching for all, and can feed the sectarian pride of none. It may therefore, tend to promote those principles of Christian brotherhood, which our blessed Master sought to establish and encourage in all his acts and teachings. But I have-another reason for wishing this tract republished. If the life and character of La Roche be ideal, they may be emulated and equaled. Indeed there is so great a resemblance between them and those of our excellent friend, the late George Joy Homer, that I do not know in what respect he was inferior to the Swiss Pastor. From youth to old age, he was faithful and diligent in all the duties of a humble, pious man; and, though sincerely attached to the principles of his own church, he had unbounded charity for every church of Christ, and for every member of it- His religion was not a mere code of articles; it was practical, a part of his daily life, controlling and guiding all he said and did. He strove ever to be "found watching," and lived each hour as if it might be his last on earth. In the church, in the counting-room, in his family, and in the street, he was uniformly the same happy, faithful servant of his Master. He was, indeed, a hard worker, a good neighbor, and an honest, pious man; true in all the relations of life, God-ward, and man-ward. National Danger in Romanism Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from National Danger in Romanism: Or Religion and the Nation I Wish to speak to you this afternoon on Religion and the Nation, and I have chosen three texts from the Holy Scriptures which show their relationship. In Psalms xxxiii. 12 we read, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance." In Psalms xxii. 28, "For the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is the governor among the nations." While in Matthew xxviii. 19 our Lord says, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations." The star of Bethlehem is no more the adequate symbol of Christ's presence in the world. For one radiant point, shining out into the gloom of night, is not sufficient to indicate the diffused light of his presence who came to be the Sun of righteousness. To-day the fitting type of Christ, in the world, is the radiant sun, as he mounts toward the zenith, illuminating every place and disclosing everything upon the upturned hemisphere. So Christ and Christ's truth are not to be directed merely to minute personal affairs, but are to be applied in the largest way to matters of the greatest magnitude. In this day of the revival of "Spiritism," when so many... are longing to communicate with the dead, and are resorting to forbidden means to that end; a day in which science is trying to discover whether there is another world than this, and whether men live after death... it seems timely that a book should be written to show what the Holy Scriptures have revealed of the "World of Spirits." -from The Second Coming of Christ The Reverend Clarence Larkin was one of the most widely influential pop theologians of the early twentieth century, and his works remain intriguing explorations of Christian philosophy today. First published in 1921, this fascinating book explores the depiction of angels, demons, and other spirits in the Bible, and features illustrations of "Satan's Throne," "Angels Appearing to Abraham," "Christ Casting Out a Demon," "The Witch of Endor," and more. Readers in religion, mythology, and classic literature will be riveted. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Larkin's The Second Coming of Christ, Rightly Dividing the Word, and The Book of Revelation. American Baptist pastor and author CLARENCE LARKIN (1850-1924) was born in Pennsylvania, and later set up his ministry there. He wrote extensively and popularly on a wide range of Biblical and theological matters.

Excerpt from The Supernatural: Or Fellowship With God Different ages have had different religious problems. Once it was the question of Monotheism. In the early Christian centuries it was the Person of Christ. At the Reformation it was the immediate access of the soul to God. To-day the great contest seems to be along the line of Naturalism. Science in the past century and a half has made enormous advances throughout the whole range of secular knowledge. It has demanded universal domain. Religion has refused to be included on the same plane as other knowledge, and science has retaliated by either ignoring it or denying its validity. Especially have its supernatural postulates been most confidently challenged. What will be the outcome? Can religion again make good its ancient isolation in a world with which science has nothing to do? Will science succeed in annihilating belief in the supernatural, and be able without it to build up in its own domain a satisfactory religion drawn entirely from natural sources? Or will it be a possible in some way to give religion, just as it is, with all its supernatural features intact, a recognized standing and established place in the world of scientific thought? Philostratus, Vol. 1 of 2 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Philostratus, Vol. 1 of 2: In Honour of Apollonius of Tyana 'What labour took Philostratus to make a book full of lies whereby he would have had Apollonius Tyaneus in miracles match unto Christ? And when he had all done, he never found one old wife so fond to believe him.' So wrote Thomas More in his Dialogue, Bk. II (Works, p. 201 B). Old wives are easier to find now; and particularly during the last century, this caste has risen to take an honoured place in our intellectual scheme. The rapid modern revival of the credulous, and decline of the rational, habit of mind brings in a renewal of interest in Apollonius of Tyana. Brunetičre had the pleasure of remarking that the nineteenth century, which at its opening affected to regard Religion as vteux jeu, went on to spend an unprecedented deal of ink and thought and passion on religious debates. And now the difficulty is how to keep any question away from this obsession. Apollonius interests our time just because we are repeating the experiences of the third and fourth centuries: the ignoble welter of modern variations recognizes its own forecast image in those times. All the principal heresies of the early period are now thriving again: nothing of them is unpopular but the names. We have our Gnostics, our Montanists, &c. And above all we have a modern Syncretism which corresponds to those courtly polygamies of the Soul, with which the Graeco-Levantine influences under the Severian dynasty attempted to debauch Europe. Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana Doctrine Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana Doctrine: The New Buddhism The book is Brahministic and Buddhistic, Indian and Western in some aspects of philosophic thought. It is profoundly philosophic, reminding one strongly of Hegel, Berkeley and G.Gore in the earlier part, and is as hard to understand as Bishop Butlers famous Analogy; yet very practical in the latter part, therefore it has great importance arising from its high and extensive range of view. If it be, as it is more and more believed that the Mahayana Faith is not Buddhism, properly so-called, but an Asiatic form of the same Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, in Buddhistic nomenclature, differing from the old Buddhism just as the new Testament differs from the old, then it commands a world-wide interest, for in it we find an adaptation of Christianity to ancient thought in Asia, and the deepest bond of union between the different races of the East and the West, viz., the bond of a common religion. Both Christianity and the New Buddhism hold to the transcendent and the immanent forms of God; but the East emphasises more of the immanent form while the West emphasises more of the transcendent. The almost universal reception of the doctrines contained in this book by both the East and the West constitutes to my mind its highest claim to our attention; for thereby we are brought face to face with a solution of the stupendous practical problem of uniting all races in one bond of religious charity! II. The Evolution and Devolution of Buddhism. The evolution of Buddhism is seen in the new Buddhism superseding the old, and the devolution in the attempt by later writers to combine the primitive with the advanced, an absurd anachronism and impossibility.
