Fairy Tales of Grimm Illustrated by Anne Anderson - 2838462324

Fairy Tales of Grimm Illustrated by Anne Anderson BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Grimm brother's famous anthology of fairy tales is here accompanied by Anderson's beautiful illustrations. Delicate black and white text drawings and full page colour plates are full of emotion and charm. About the Illustrator: Anne Anderson (1874-c.1940) was a Scottish illustrator chiefly noted for her Art Nouveau children's book illustrations that display fluidity typical of the movement. Characteristic of her work are decorative and lightly drawn or painted illustrations of neatly dressed children, neatly dressed with pear-shaped faces. Anderson's work has been compared to that of Jessie M. King, a contemporary. About the Authors: Jacob (1875-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) were academics who spent years researching and documenting folk tales. They are arguably best known for their collection Children's and Household Tales published in 1812, which later became known as Grimm's Fairy Tales, and contained some of today's most celebrated fairy stories, such as Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin and Hansel and Gretel. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.

Maurice Sendak and the Art of Children's Book Illustration - 2845522170

Maurice Sendak and the Art of Children's Book Illustration Crescent Moon Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

MAURICE SENDAK Maurice Sendak is the widely acclaimed American children's book author and illustrator. This critical study focusses on his famous trilogy, Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen and Outside Over There, as well as the early works and Sendak's superb depictions of Grimms' fairy tales in The Juniper Tree. L.M. Poole begins with a chapter on children's book illustration, in particular the treatment of fairy tales. Sendak's work is situated within the history of children's book illustration, and he is compared with many contemporary authors. This new edition includes a new introduction, a new bibliography and many more illustrations. The text has been completely revised and updated. Illustrated. With bibliography and notes. 264 pages. ISBN 9781861714282. www.crmoon.com MAURICE SENDAK (1928-2012), has become America's premier children's book author and illustrator. He's as important - and as adored - as Theodore Geisel (Dr Seuss). Best known for his trilogy of classic picture books - Where the Wild Things Are (1963), In the Night Kitchen (1970) and Outside Over There (1981) - Sendak has also written many other books (though mainly in children's book form). His interpretation of the Grimm Brothers, The Juniper Tree, although it is less well-known, could be said to be his most accomplished work. This book aims to consider some of Maurice Sendak's most significant works, concentrating on the children's books and the picture books. Other chapters explore Sendak's relationship with the movies and art of Walt Disney (which Sendak admires); his interpretation of classic fairy tales; a brief consideration of the fairy tale form; Sendak's links with the tradition of children's book illustration; and finally a comparison of Sendak's art with that of other book illustrators. The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature offers a typical assessment of Maurice Sendak as one of the highpoints of modern children's book illustration: Quite apart from his outstanding draughtmanship and mastery of styles, Sendak's exploration of the realms of the unconscious in Where the Wild Things Are and its successors lifts his work beyond the confines of the children's picture book and places it among major art of the 20th century. Joyce Whalley and Tessa Chester write of Sendak: Sendak's superiority amounts to far more than mere technical ability and an instinct for interpreting a text, whether his own or that of someone else. His sympathy and concern with every book he illustrates mounts to an almost religious obsession when it comes to his own picture books... His vision is unique, his draughtsmanship par excellence, and his work as a whole lifts him well into the ranks of the great illustrators of all time.

Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of W. C. Morrow - 2851001511

Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of W. C. Morrow Leonaur Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A classic collection of eighteen chilling stories from a little known American master Born in 1854, Morrow was the son of Baptist minister, hotelier and farmer in Mobile, Alabama. Moving to California in 1879, he began selling stories to 'The Argonaut' periodical where the famous author Ambrose Bierce had been working for the previous two years. Bierce recognised Morrow's talent as a writer of short stories and it is believed that it was due to Bierce's patronage that several of Morrows best known and highly regarded stories appeared in William Randolph Hearst's 'San Francisco Examiner' newspaper. Although Morrow's fame has not endured in to the same degree as some of his contemporaries, it is considered in modern academic circles that his was an enormous talent and that he deserves a place in the pantheon of significant 19th century American authors. Of course, to the aficionado of the supernatural and bizarre what matters most is whether he tells a genuinely chilling tale. Bierce certainly believed that he could and as he was no mean exponent of ghostly and horrific fiction himself he was well placed to deliver a considered judgment. However, perhaps Morrow's highest accolade came in one of Bierce's own satirical pieces in which a character exclaims, 'I have one of Will Morrow's tales in my pocket, but I don't dare to go where there is light enough to read it!' High praise indeed! In this collection readers will discover the story that is arguably Morrow's most famous, the horrible tale of dismemberment that is 'The Unconquerable Enemy' together with 'The Inmate of the Dungeon,' 'Treacherous Velasco,' 'The Faithful Amulet,' 'The Haunted Burglar,' 'The Gloomy Shadow,' 'The Haunted Automaton,' 'The Woman of the Inner Room' and nine more short stories of the disturbing and unusual. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
