Throughout Doug Luffborough's young life, he found himself torn between two masters: the selfish and the spiritual. As one of four hardworking children born to a loving and hardworking-albeit disadvantaged-mother, Doug faced learning challenges, hunger, and homelessness, giving in to the temptations of drinking and gang life in order to survive. At the peak of his struggles, Doug recognized that an education would help pull him out of this cycle-for good. Watch Me Rise is a memoir of hope, determination, and eventually a graduate degree from Harvard-and all from someone who was told he was not "college material." "In this book, Doug Luffborough invites readers to share a remarkable and ultimately heartening journey. Prepare to experience a range of emotions as you read this book, including rage, shame, and humiliation as a precursor to compassion, pride, and joy. It is an account of growth and development, the result of which is the emergence of a good man. It is a book worth reading not just because of how it makes you feel, but also because of how it makes you want to be." -George Reed, PhD, Associate Dean, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, University of San Diego "From the moment Doug walks into a room, you can feel his energy and the strength of spirit that he exudes-it is captivating. He is the real deal. Present and action oriented, Doug possesses the ability to remain conscious of his past while not allowing it to define who he is as a person. His openness and honesty invite you in from the moment you meet him. Doug not only survived but also thrived, despite the obstacles that he encountered. Doug's willingness to share his vulnerabilities on a visceral level is one of the qualities that allow him to break down barriers and relate to others in a compassionate and genuine manner. His enthusiastic, caring, charismatic approach was contagious, and it is readily apparent that Doug is a man who holds high standards for himself and, in doing so, motivates others to aspire to be better. Doug not only epitomizes effective leadership, but he also transcends it." -Maria Olson, Former Resident Director, Office of Residential Life, Northeastern University "A message of hope, hard work, dedication, and never-ending faith ... For our youth today, and for those of us who work to guide and support them, Doug Luffborough's story provides both inspiration and wisdom. Doug's powerful ability to engage an audience-whether on stage, in a boardroom, or in text-is fully displayed as he shows us that anything is possible, and dreams do come true if you work hard and keep the faith!" -Kevin E. Baird, Chairman, Global Center for College and Career Readiness "Doug is the quintessential leader. To have arrived at the level of personal and professional success that he has achieved, given the myriad of obstacles that he had to overcome, makes him a true role model. Others who aspire to create better lives for themselves and their families, as Doug did, can look to him for inspiration. Doug has had the resiliency to persevere, build skills, and then use his innate talents to create positive change both close to home, as well in the greater community. In my thirty-four years of helping countless individuals realize their personal promise, Doug's story is the one that continues to inspire me. His is the success story at which we all marvel." -Pamela Boisvert, CEO, Massachusetts Education & Career Opportunities, Inc. (MassEDCO)

Filled with scripture, the time in your prayer closet will be set afire with the Holy Spirit as you pray God's word back to Him in Beautiful Intercession. This book is more than just a journal, it's a confident journey to the throne room of God with His word on your tongue and the needs of others on your heart. It's more than just a prayer list, it's a beautiful organizer full of written and visual art to keep the needs of others on the forefront of your thoughts when you enter your quiet time. You will see God's faithfulness unfold before you as you transfer names from each need chapter to the praise chapter at the end of the book, where God gets all the glory for His answers to your Beautiful Intercession. What happened as the Lord placed my heart and focus on writing Beautiful Intercession is that my lens shifted from magnifying my own hurts, mountains and struggles, to feeling His compassion, mercy and grace for others as my daily prayers turned to the needs of those He brought to mind. What happened was that caring about what Jesus cares about has changed my entire perspective. Love Him, love them, that is all... Jesus replied: "ż'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37

This is one of a three-volume series called, Mentoring His Way - Disciple Twelve based on the "Twelve Characteristics of a Godly Life." In this first book, we learn about the four "Spiritual Characteristics if a Godly Life." I am a Believer I know Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior The first spiritual characteristic of living a Godly life is about your assurance of knowing Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. To conform to the image of Christ, you need to have no doubts that He is in your life and that you are assured of your relationship with Him and that you have eternal life. I am Empowered I am controlled and empowered by the Holy Spirit The second spiritual characteristic of a Godly life is understanding the power we have available to live the Christian life. Each day we choose to gratify the desires of the flesh or the will of the Spirit. Our spirit is satisfied only when we are totally surrendered to the control of God the Holy Spirit. I am Victorious I have Christ's authority over all the enemy's power The third spiritual characteristic of a Godly life is to apply Christ's power over Satan. People struggle with temptation every day. We can have real victory over sin by exercising Christ's authority over all of Satan's influence. Because we have Christ in us, He gives us the power and authority over the enemy to stop his attacks. I am a Warrior I put on all of God's armor in order to defeat Satan The fourth spiritual characteristic of a Godly life is learning how to put on the full armor of God for warfare against our enemy. God promised a way to keep temptation from becoming so strong that we could not stand up against it. He gave us six pieces of armor and instructions for their use. This gives Christians the ability to walk in the Spirit instead of walking in the flesh. Volume Two covers the "Personal Characteristics of a Godly Life" Volume Three covers the "Lifestyle Characteristics of a Godly Life"

Complete Works of Thomas Manton, D.D, Vol. 19 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Complete Works of Thomas Manton, D.D, Vol. 19: Containing Sermons on Several Texts of Scripture These words are part of Christ's rebuke to Peter, who, when the high priest's servants came to attack Christ, draweth his sword, and cuts off Malchus' ear, which our Lord first health, and then reproveth his disciple for this temerarious action: 'Put up thy sword into the sheath.' He reproveth him, partly because it becometh no private man by opposition to resist authority; but the chief reason was, our Lord would not be hindered in performing the great act of his mediation, his dying for sinners. You shall see in another place, when Peter counselled him against his sufferings, he rebuked him with the same severity that he doth the devil tempting him to idolatry: 'Get thee behind me, Satan,' Mat. xvi. 23, compared with Mat. iv. 10. And here this rash and unseasonable interposition, to save his master by force, is again reproved. In Peters temerity, take notice of the difference between military valour and christian fortitude. He that faltered and was blown down by the weak blast of a damsels question hath now the courage with a single sword to venture upon an whole band of men. Military valour is boisterous, and dependeth upon the heat of blood and spirits, and is better for a sudden onset than a deliberate trial; but christian fortitude dependeth on the strength of faith, and lieth in a meek subjection to God, and will enable us to endure the greatest torments rather than encroach upon the conscience of our duty to God. A man of a military forward spirit may outbrave dangers when they are sudden, but faileth or fainteth in weaker trials, that are managed rather in a way of charge and accusation than force. But in Christ's rebuke, take notice of his obedience to God and love to men. Obedience to God: Shall I not suffer patiently, without resisting, what my Father hath determined me to suffer? And love to men; it was the cup which God had given him to drink for the good of his people, and therefore he would by no means decline it. In the words take notice of - (1.) The notion by which affliction is expressed; it is a cup.' (2.) God's ordering of it, Which my Father hath given me.' (3.) Christ's submission, 'Shall I not drink it?' 1. For the term or notion whereby Christ's sufferings are expressed, 'a cup.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
