Dear Valentina - A Love Story 1941-2005 Fortis Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

On December 15, 1944, Valentina and Merle Martin celebrated their third wedding anniversary with a hug, a kiss, and a goodbye-possibly forever. From that day forward, Merle Martin vowed to write his wife a letter every day as long as he was able when stationed in Hawaii and later on Okinawa during his service in World War II. Despite the flooding, typhoons, air raids, and operation of a field hospital less than a mile behind the front lines, Merle kept his promise. In his absence, Val would eventually collect well over three hundred of his letters expressing his fear, sorrow, everlasting love, and unfaltering hope for a better future. In what seemed like a lifetime of separation, Val and Merle remained together through their words and joint hope that he would one day return home safely. After reading through them for the last time, Val Martin has combined Merle's letters with her own personal narrative to paint a picture of the difficulties they faced during what would be their most challenging year as individuals and as a married couple. Dear Valentina bears witness to their experience of grief and loss as well as faithfulness and love in a time of war. About the Author: Valentina Martin was born in Tama County, Iowa on February 11, 1925. With Czech as her first language and English as her second, Val became determined to learn English and learn it well. In doing so, she received a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters Degree in English Literature from the University of Northern Iowa, including several courses at Arizona State University while wintering in Scottsdale, AZ. She completed her masters' degree while owning a real estate firm. In December of 1941, Val married her husband, Merle, and they had one son, Jerald L. Martin who lives in Waterloo, Iowa where she now also resides. After Merle's death in November of 2005, Val made it her personal mission to honor his memory and service during World War II by re-reading the love letters he had sent to her and through them sharing the history they witnessed. Dear Valentina is the realization of her dream to share their story with the world and to honor their love forever.

Out of Town Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Out of Town: A Rural Episode "Do you know, Mr. Gray," asked my estimable wife early one morning, as she raised the sash and threw open the blinds of the chamber-window, in our house in Merry-field Place, "that the spring is here? Observe how balmy is the air, and see how the buds are swelling on the trees, and the grass sending forth its green blades in the courtyard. Listen to the song of that bluebird, perched upon the. swaying branch of the elm, and hearken, too, to the buzzing of the early flies, enjoying the warm sunshine on the window panes. Yes, the spring is here, my dear, and we are on the verge, as the poet hath it, of the 'delicate-footed May'; and this reminds me - oh! sad anticlimax - that you have not yet obtained a house for the coming year, and that, before ten days go by, unless you do, we shall be homeless, having neither a shelter for, nor a place wherein to lay, our heads." "I am fully aware of it, my dear," I replied; "and I have for the last month, as you are aware, travelled over the greater part of the city searching for a proper residence, without finding one. I have half-decided to look no further" - "That would be just like you, Mr. Gray," interrupted my wife; "you would be willing to sit down quietly, with folded hands, and let the future take care of itself." Following Girls Bloomsbury

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

When Amanda Baker was 14 she found a letter written by her runaway mother to her unborn child: 'Dear Jeremy' it began 'or Amanda...' Mrs Baker still sends Christmas presents - Meccano, a fishing rod, a Spare Rib subscription - but her daughter is now in the coolly capable hands of Mr Baker's second wife, Pam, who trots home from work on her stacked heels to her formica 'dream kitchen', where she curls butter, grills grapefruit and swigs sherry from the bottle hidden under the sink. Meanwhile Amanda's dad, soured by his experiences with free-spirited women, crossbreeds fuchsias and salivates over glossy prospectuses in search of a new school for his disappointing daughter. The happiest days of your life? Not for Baker, sixteen and sick of it as she moves miserably between lessons packed with palm fibre and the use of the dative. Baker's only solace is her fifth form gang - the four Mandies - and a low-calorie diet of king-sized cigarettes, until she teams up with Julia Smith, games captain and consummate game player. And so begins a passionate friendship that will threaten her future, menace her sanity and risk the betrayal of everything and everyone she holds dear. The Following Girls weaves the minutiae of Seventies girlhood into an unsparing tragi-comedy of shrinking horizons, dangerous alliances and not-so-happy families.

Heroes' Welcome HarperCollins Publishers Ltd

The Heroes' Welcome is the incandescent sequel to the bestselling R&J pick My Dear, I Wanted to Tell You. Its evocation of a time deeply wounded by the pain of WW1 will capture and beguile readers fresh to Louisa Young's wonderful writing, and those previously enthralled by the stories of Nadine and Riley, Rose, Peter and Julia. LONDON, APRIL 1919. THE GREAT WAR HAS ENDED. In a flurry of spring blossom, childhood sweethearts Nadine Waverney and Rilery Purefoy are married. Thos who have survived the war are, in a way, home. But Riley is wounded and disfigured; normality seems incomprehensible, and love unfathomable. Honeymooning in a battered, liberated Europe, they long for a marriage made of love and passion rather than dependence and pity. At Locke Hill in Kent, Riley's former CO Major Peter Locke is obsessed by Homer. His hysterical wife, Julia, and the young son they barely know attempt to navigate family life, but are confounded by the ghosts and memories of Peter's war. Despite all this, there is the glimmer of a real future in the distance: Rose Locke, Peter's cousin and Riley's former nurse, finds that independence might be hers for the taking, after all. For those who fought, those who healed and those who stayed behind, 1919 is a year of accepting realities, holding to hope and reaching after new beginnings. The Heroes' Welcome is a brave and brilliant evocation of a time deeply wounded by the pain of war. It is as devastating as it is inspiring.
