For the fortieth anniversary of its publication, in May 2006, Faber are reissuing Seamus Heaney's classic first collection, Death of a Naturalist, which on its appearance in 1966 won the Cholmondeley Award, the E.C. Gregory Award, the Somerset Maugham Award and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. 'His words give us the soil-reek of Ireland, the colourful violence of his childhood on a farm in Derry. The full-blooded energy of these poems makes Death of a Naturalist the best first book of poems I've read for some time.' - C.B. Cox in the Spectator 'The power and precision of his best poems are a delight, and as a first collection Death of a Naturalist is outstanding [...] His subject is those things which are inherent or inherited. What he praises is to be praised in his own work.' - Christopher Ricks, New Statesman 'Now, to pry into roots, to finger slime, To stare big-eyed Narcissus, into some spring Is beneath all adult dignity. I rhyme To see myself, to set the darkness echoing.'

John Muir, famous for his naturalist essays and books, was over 70 years old when he wrote "The Yosemite" as a reflection on the beauty of the national park. Muir was a naturalist, so he was highly invested in describing the landscape, flora, and fauna of Yosemite National Park. He even said that "no temple with manmade hands can compare with Yosemite." Muir knew the terrain well, having hiked and climbed Cathedral Peak, Mount Dana, and the old Indian trail that lead to Mono Lake. The naturalist also built a small log cabin along Yosemite Creek and lived there for two years, enjoying the quiet natural life. "The Yosemite" describes Muir's interactions with the people he met over the years in Yosemite along with his adventures, like riding an avalanche. John Muir is best known as one of the first nature writers in America. Besides wanting people to know the natural beauty of their country, he wanted to instill a deep sense of conservation and protection for the untouched lands. Muir helped co-found the now-famous Sierra Club, which had a hand in making Yosemite a national park. Muir was the first president of the organization and remained in the position until his death in 1914.

This internationally acclaimed novel is the fictional monologue of Hendrickje Stoffels, Rembrandt's last mistress. It combines all the qualities of a naturalist tragedy, historical novel and exposition of seventeenth-century Dutch society. Matton has researched not only Rembrandt's life and works, but also contemporary Amsterdam and the Black Death to provide an intriguing, intimate and privileged view into the painter's life. Above all, this is Hendrickje's story. A sensitive innocent, she escapes the harsh realities of her garrison home-town to become a servant in Rembrandt's household. She soon becomes his lover and closest confidante, filling the void in his life resulting from the death of his wife and two of their children. 'Reborn at twenty' in Rembrandt's studio, enlightened by the positive values of beauty, truth, love and art, Hendrickje is fated to discover the hypocrisy and fickleness of Amsterdam society, which ostracises her and precipitates Rembrandt's final collapse. In a serene, sensuous style of writing, Matton paints a powerful fictional portrait of this impassioned relationship in the fascinating context of a turbulent era of Dutch history.

Remarkable Life of William Beebe Shearwater Books,US

When William Beebe needed to know what was going on in the depths of the ocean, he had himself lowered a half-mile down in a four-foot steel sphere to see-five times deeper than anyone had ever gone in the 1930s. When he wanted to trace the evolution of pheasants in 1910, he trekked on foot through the mountains and jungles of the Far East to locate every species. To decipher the complex ecology of the tropics, he studied the interactions of every creature and plant in a small area from the top down, setting the emerging field of tropical ecology into dynamic motion. William Beebe's curiosity about the natural world was insatiable, and he did nothing by halves. As the first biographer to see the letters and private journals Beebe kept from 1887 until his death in 1962, science writer Carol Grant Gould brings the life and times of this groundbreaking scientist and explorer compellingly to light. From the Galapagos Islands to the jungles of British Guiana, from the Bronx Zoo to the deep seas, Beebe's biography is a riveting adventure. A best-selling author in his own time. Beebe was a fearless explorer and thoughtful scientist who put his life on the line in pursuit of knowledge. The unique glimpses he provided into the complex web of interactions that keeps the earth alive and breathing have inspired generations of conservationists and ecologists. This exciting biography of a great naturalist brings William Beebe at last to the recognition he deserves.

Memoirs Baron Cuvier (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Memoirs Baron Cuvier Before I enter upon the subject of this volume, I would explain to my readers the motives which have induced me to write it, in order to prevent that appearance of presumption, which may naturally be laid to the charge of an unlearned person, who attempts to write the life of so illustrious a savant. When death has torn from us those whom we have most loved and revered, and the overwhelming bitterness of grief is past, the first feeling which awakens us from our sorrow is the desire to uphold the memory, and to make known to all men the virtues of the being enshrined in our hearts; a feeling which springs, not only from an honest pride in doing justice to one who is no more, but from a desire that posterity should benefit by the example. Rousing myself, then, from the stunning grief which at first assailed me, I eagerly sought all the public notices which appeared in England concerning the Baron Cuvier, in the hope of finding something equal to his high deserts; but though all did him the justice of placing him above every other naturalist, not one spoke of his talents as a legislator, and all equally neglected his private character. This, and the almost universal incorrectness of detail, no doubt proceeded from ignorance rather than intention; yet, disappointed as I was that my countrymen should have so little known and appreciated one of the most admirable persons of our time, nothing, at that moment, could be further from my thoughts than to supply the deficiencies by my own pen. Hildegard of Bingen FABER & FABER

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Best known today as a fine composer, the twelfth-century German abbess Hildegard of Bingen was also a religious leader and visionary, a poet, naturalist and writer of medical treatises. Despite her cloistered life she had strong, often controversial views on sex, love and marriage too - a woman astonishing in her own age, whose book of apocalyptic visions, Scivias, would alone have been enough to ensure her lasting fame. In this classic and highly praised biography - first published by Headline in 2001 - distinguished writer and journalist, Fiona Maddocks, draws on Hildegard's prolific writings to paint a portrait of her extraordinary life against the turbulent medieval background of crusade and schism, scientific discovery and cultural revolution. The great intellectual gifts and forceful character that emerge make her as fascinating as any figure in the Middle Ages. More than 800 years after her death, Pope Benedict XVI has made Hildegard a Saint and a Doctor of the Church (one of only four women). Fiona Maddocks has provided a short new preface to cover these tributes to an extraordinary and exceptional woman.

Seamus Heaney: Poet and Critic Peter Lang AG

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Seamus Heaney has had a distinguished career as a poet and a critic. His eighth volume of poetry, Seeing Things, appeared in 1991. Other major volumes of poetry have included Death of a Naturalist, North, Field Work, and Station Island. His critical writings have been collected in Preoccupations, The Government of the Tongue, and The Place of Writing. Heaney seems to be a poet in mid-career, moving away from an earth-centered poetry confident of its connections to a more-problematic region, where the poet becomes an uncertain pilgrim. As a critic, Heaney has high expectations for his own poetry and for that of other poets he admires, such as Lowell, Auden, Plath, Kavanagh, and Larkin. For Heaney, the most significant poets are those who have constantly challenged themselves to write

These biographical sketches of over 900 individuals trace the descendants of an obscure inn keeper in Marlow in the early 17th century over ten generations. Five years of painstaking research have produced a work of original scholarship. It includes characters as diverse as the novelist Fay Weldon and General Sir Edmund Allenby, who liberated Palestine and supported Lawrence of Arabia. Close links are shown with the naturalist Gilbert White of Selborne, whom Darwin acknowledged as a major influence. The main surnames covered are Cane, Dodwell, Chapman and Jepson; but over 50 descendant lines are traced worldwide. Amongst the many deaths identified are one in the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, a death in a Swiss avalanche and a drowning while trying to cross a river in Australia. Two cases of long-forgotten suicide are unearthed, amidst other tragedies. The title of the book is taken from the final words of George Eliot's Middlemarch. She grew up on the estate of the Newdigate family in Warwickshire and they feature briefly in these sketches.
