Fashion Textiles Now ANTIQUE COLLECTORS CLUB

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Before the beautifully tailored men's suit or the exquisite gown appears on the catwalk or in the store, the most important element comes into play - the place where fashion starts - the fabric. But how much do we actually know about the textiles we are wearing and does it matter? The textile industry is active all over the globe. Behind the catwalks there is a whole hidden system which combines industry, glamour, high finance and above all, design. Its scope runs from high-tech industrial complexes to traditional spinning and weaving. It encompasses haute couture and tailoring for the elite to handmade craft fabric made on traditional looms and the everyday clothing we buy in our favourite shops. It is leading the heritage revival, seeing the renaissance of old established mills and skills, and plays a part in the growing influence of sustainability and green attitudes to manufacture. This book, written by textiles expert Janet Prescott, is a guide to all types of fashion fabrics from the traditional tweeds to luxury fabrics containing lapis lazuli and diamonds to the newest hi-tech textiles as well as recycled and eco fabrics. Do you know whether your underwear is made of crab shells? Could you be wearing milk and coffee? Can your T-shirt stop you from getting skin cancer? These are just a few of the intriguing questions the author addresses in her book. With information on where each fabric comes from, how it is made and its properties, 'Fashion Textiles Now' provides a complete guide to fashion textiles. Whether you are a student or professional in fashion, textiles, design or merchandising, a costume designer or curator, this book is for you.

Felt to Stitch ANOVA Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In Felt to Stitch, acclaimed feltmaker Sheila Smith explores the possibilities of making and using handmade felt for stitch. Felt is an incredibly versatile medium that is easy to make and manipulate and provides the ideal base for surface embellishment. Handmade felt allows you a degree of control and creativity that ready-made fabrics cannot replicate. This book shows you how to make your own felt, select and dye your own colours, build unusual textures with felt fibres and further embellishment, and manipulate the felt to produce three- dimensional pieces. With sample projects that illustrate the main techniques, Felt to Stitch addresses the main elements of design in felt: * Colour: blending commercially dyed fibres; dyeing processes for wool fibres; applying colour as surface design * Line and shape: methods for creating clear outlines in felt; pre-felts for use on inlay, applique and mosaic. * Texture: combining felt and fabric - Nuno felt; embellishing with other fibres. Form/three-dimensional felt: seamless hollow forms. * Other techniques: multi-layered felts; low relief; and webs/grids. This is an essential book in the library of any textile artist.

Reconstructing Italian Fashion - 2856488754

Reconstructing Italian Fashion BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Despite its long eclipse by Parisian couture, Italian fashion is now celebrated globally for the quality of its tailoring, fabric and design. But an Italian label was not always a yardstick for excellence. In the twenty years following the Second World War, a little known fact is that America played a key role in the development of Italy's fashion industry. More generally known is that the Marshall Plan had a formative influence on the financial and industrial reorganization of Italian postwar reconstruction. But America's specific influence on the regeneration of the Italian textile industry has been largely passed over, despite the meteoric rise of design houses such as Max Mara, Gucci and Prada. However, while American interest was central to the industrial and stylistic expansion of Italian fashion, the lessons learned were combined with Italian ideas and energies to create fashions with a distinctly Italian edge. This book reveals that a deliberate effort went into the development of an Italian national identity in fashion design, partially in response to American interest. Drawing on a wide range of sources, notably the testimonies of key witnesses, contemporary media reports and surviving garments, this book contributes to the scant research on twentieth century Italian dress and specifically exposes for the first time the depth of American involvement in Italian fashion in a crucial phase of its development.
