Explores development through historical narrative and examines the globalization/development paradox through in-depth case studies. In his Fifth Edition of Development and Social Change: A Global Perspective, author Philip McMichael examines the project of globalization and its instabilities (climate, energy, food, financial crises) through the lens of development and its origins in the colonial project. The book continues to help students make sense of a complex world in transition and explains how globalization became part of public discourse. Filled with case studies, this text makes the intricacies of globalization concrete, meaningful, and clear for students and moves them away from simple social evolutionary views, encouraging them to connect social change, development policies, global inequalities and social movements. The book challenges students to see themselves as global citizens whose consumption decisions have real social and ecological implications. Key Features: * a world-historical perspective that situates globalization in the declining fortunes of the postwar development project, and considers current global limits and possibilities * a political perspective that views development and globalization as discursive practices managed by historic elite groupings, as mechanisms of power and world ordering * an ecological perspective drawing attention to the environmental consequences of development and attempts to reintegrate social life in ecological cycles * an emphasis on resistance and social movements as actors shaping the meaning and direction of these projects, in addition to building alternatives * a series of case studies that allow in-depth examination of development/globalization dilemmas and paradoxes to interrupt the idea of a linear process. New to the Fifth Edition: * developmental impacts of the rise of the BRICS * structural adjustment and new inequalities come to the global North * 'de-growth' philosophies * the re-centering of agriculture in light of the food, energy and climate crises * land-grabbing and biofuels * green technologies and climate proofing * transition towns and re-localization * new democratic movements.

This volume explodes myths about social welfare and development and offers a critical interface between "comparative social welfare" and "new social development.' Brij Mohan has assembled a leading group of scholars and educators to reflect on climate change, economics, and social justice and together unfold the dynamics and dialectics at the variegated nexus of human-social development. In his own chapters, Mohan draws on a life's experience as a dedicated social work pioneer to explore new dimensions of social practice that enhance its relevance in a globalized culture that breeds social meltdowns, economic inequality, and global injustice.

Childhood in a Global Perspective Polity Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The second edition of this compelling and popular book offers a unique global perspective on children's lives throughout the world. It shows how the notion of childhood is being radically re-shaped, in part as a consequence of globalization. Taking an engaging historical and comparative approach, the book explores social issues such as how children are constituted as raced, classed and gendered subjects; how children's involvement in war is connected to the globalization of capitalism and organized crime; and how school and work operate as sites for the governing of childhood. The book discusses wide-ranging topics including children's rights, the family, children and war, child labour and young people's activism around the globe. In addition to updated literature throughout, the revised edition includes new chapters on migration and trafficking, and the role of play. The book will continue to be of great value to students and scholars in the fields of sociology, geography, social policy and development studies. It will also be a valuable companion to practitioners of international development and social work, as well as to anyone interested in childhood in the contemporary world.

The Internet and Democracy in Global Perspective Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This volume provides an important update to our current understanding of politics and the internet in a variety of new contexts, both geographically and institutionally. The subject of e-democracy has morphed over the years from speculative and optimistic accounts of a future heightened direct citizen involvement in political decision-making and an increasingly withered state apparatus, to more prosaic investigations of party and governmental website content and micro level analyses of voters online activities. Rather than levelling the communications and participation playing field, most studies concluded that existing patterns of bias and power distribution were being repeated online, with the one exception of a genuine change in the potential for protest and e-activism. Across all of these accounts, the question remains whether the internet is a levelling communication tool that elevates the profile of marginalised players in the political system, or whether it is a medium that simply reinforces existing power and participatory biases. While employing case studies from various global perspectives, this book investigates the role of digital media and competitive advantage, campaigns and the effect of social media, online communication as way of fomenting nonviolent revolutions and the undeniable and important role of the internet on democracy around the world.

Climate Change as Social Drama - 2854356789

Climate Change as Social Drama Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Climate change is not just a scientific fact, nor merely a social and political problem. It is also a set of stories and characters that amount to a social drama. This drama, as much as hard scientific or political realities, shapes perception of the problem. Drs Smith and Howe use the perspective of cultural sociology and Aristotle's timeless theories about narrative and rhetoric to explore this meaningful and visible surface of climate change in the public sphere. Whereas most research wants to explain barriers to awareness, here we switch the agenda to look at the moments when global warming actually gets attention. Chapters consider struggles over apocalyptic scenarios, explain the success of Al Gore and An Inconvenient Truth, unpack the deeper social meanings of the climate conference and 'Climategate', critique failed advertising campaigns and climate art, and question the much touted transformative potential of natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy.

Flood Risk: The Holistic Perspective - 2849847585

Flood Risk: The Holistic Perspective IWA Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

According to the International Disaster Database (EM-DAT), over the last seventy years, floods have shown the fastest rate of increase relative to any other type of disasters. Devastation due to these events occurs almost daily. Even though our technological capabilities for dealing with floods have advanced rapidly over the same period, and while global economic growth per capita has doubled, flood events have become ever more disastrous. Does this mean that our technological developments have advanced independently from the social and wider ecological needs? Flood Risk: The Holistic Perspective is a direct response to this question and it argues that this paradoxical situation is a result from our narrow and fragmented perception of reality which has been characteristic of our academic disciplines and government agencies. It suggests that the way forward can be found only if we broaden our view and learn how the natural or social phenomena can provoke a response in a society, or a social group, which in turn can trigger the technical developments, and so on, again and again, in what has the potential to become a network of interactions and relationships through positive feedback (or coevolving) cycles. The holistic perspective however may raise the following question: If everything is connected to everything else, how can we ever hope to understand anything? Our response draws from the understandings brought by complexity theory where individual elements coevolve together both in development and application. This recognition opens a new analysis which goes beyond the direct objects or actors of concern (risk forecasting, early warning, land-use planning technology and systems for example), and into the relationships between them. The book suggests that our initial response to this and many other challenges is to change our perception from a disciplinary and defensive one to a progressive (or transcendental) and transdiciplinary, i.e., the one that turns challenges into the possibilities that can re-shape our future.

Globalization, Discourse, Media: In a Critical Perspective Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego

Wydawnictwa naukowe i popularno-naukoweKomunikacja społeczna. Media. DziennikarstwoGlobalizacja

This volume deals with communicative, social and media-related aspects of discourses under globalization. In one way or another, all the contributions touch upon issues relating to new multilingualism and new multiculturalism, which are being propelled worldwide by politically and economically motivated processes of migration. The pivotal topics covered are: postmodern social identities (esp. national, transnational and consumer identities), linguistic and cultural variation and change under the influence of global English and new technologies, as well as the ideologization of public discourses and that of the media in particular. The chapters are united by their focus on in-depth critical interpretations of public (often political) discourses. While most of the contributions are couched in a Critical Discourse Analysis framework, room has been made for cognate interdisciplinary approaches to social communication. Alongside well grounded empirical studies, this volume features innovative theoretical reflections and proposals of how new approaches and methods for investigating social and linguistic phenomena might be employed to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The bilingual format of this volume (English and German) affords the possibility to elucidate on language- and culture- based variation and on how these respective issues are academically researched and socially mediated.

Deaf Epistemologies, Identity, and Learning: A Comparative Perspective GALLAUDET UNIV PR

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Goedele A. M. De Clerck presents cross-cultural comparative research that examines and documents where deaf flourishing occurs and how it can be advanced. She spotlights collective and dynamic resources of knowledge and learning; the coexistence of lived differences; social, linguistic, cultural, and psychological capital; and human potential and creativity.        Deaf Epistemologies, Identity, and Learning argues for an inclusive approach to the intrinsic human diversity in society, education, and scholarship, and shows how emotions of hope, frustration, and humiliation contribute to the construction of identity and community. De Clerck also considers global to local dynamics in deaf identity, deaf culture, deaf education, and deaf empowerment. She presents empirical research through case studies of the emancipation processes for deaf people in Flanders (a region of Belgium), the United States (specifically, at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC), and the West African nation of Cameroon. These three settings illuminate different phases of emancipation in different contexts, and the research findings are integrated into a broader literature review and subjected to theoretical reflection.        De Clerck's anthropology of deaf flourishing draws from her critical application of the empowerment paradigm in settings of daily life, research, leadership, and community work, as she explores identity and well-being through an interdisciplinary lens. This work is centered around practices of signed storytelling and posits learning as the primary access and pathway to culture, identity, values, and change. Change driven by the learning process is considered an awakening--and through this awakening, the deaf community can gain hope, empowerment, and full citizenship. In this way, deaf people are allowed to shape their histories, and the result is the elevation of all aspects of deaf lives around the world.
