### Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations II: Theory and Applications Birkhäuser

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

This volume contains the contributions of participants of the conference "Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations" which, under the chairmanship of the editors, took place at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach from May 18 to May 24, 1986. The great variety of topics covered by the contributions strongly indicates that also in the future it will be impossible to develop a unifying control theory of partial differential equations. On the other hand, there is a strong tendency to treat prob lems which are directly connected to practical applications. So this volume contains real-world applications like optimal cooling laws for the production of rolled steel or concrete solutions for the problem of optimal shape design in mechanics and hydrody namics. Another main topic is the construction of numerical methods. This includes applications of the finite element method as well as of Quasi-Newton-methods to con strained and unconstrained control problems. Also, very complex problems arising in the theory of free boundary value problems are treated. ]~inally, some contribu tions show how practical problems stimulate the further development of the theory; in particular, this is the case for fields like suboptimal control, necessary optimality conditions and sensitivity analysis. As usual, the lectures and stimulating discussions took place in the pleasant at mosphere of the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach. Special thanks of the participants are returned to the Director as well as to the staff of the institute.

### Elliptic Functional Differential Equations and Applications Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

Boundary value problems for elliptic differential-difference equations have some astonishing properties. For example, unlike elliptic differential equations, the smoothness of the generalized solutions can be broken in a bounded domain and is preserved only in some subdomains. The symbol of a self-adjoint semibounded functional differential operator can change its sign. The purpose of this book is to present for the first time general results concerning solvability and spectrum of these problems, a priori estimates and smoothness of solutions. The approach is based on the properties of elliptic operators and difference operators in Sobolev spaces. The most important features distinguishing this work are applications to different fields of science. The methods in this book are used to obtain new results regarding the solvability of nonlocal elliptic boundary value problems and the existence of Feller semigroups for multidimensional diffusion processes. Moreover, applications to control theory and aircraft and rocket technology are given. The theory is illustrated with numerous figures and examples. The book is addresssed to graduate students and researchers in partial differential equations and functional differential equations. It will also be of use to engineers in control theory and elasticity theory.

### Modeling, Mesh Generation, and Adaptive Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications MODELING, MESH GENERATION, AND ADAPTIVE NUMERICAL METHODS FOR PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS is based on the proceedings of the 1993 IMA Summer Program "Modeling, Mesh Generation, and Adaptive Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations." We thank Ivo Babuska, Joseph E. Flaherty, William D. Hen shaw, John E. Hopcroft, Joseph E. Oliger, and Tayfun Tezduyar for orga nizing the workshop and editing the proceedings. We also take this oppor tunity to thank those agencies whose financial support made the summer program possible: the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Army Re search Office (ARO) the Department of Energy (DOE), the Minnesota Su percomputer Institute (MSI), and the Army High Performance Computing Research Center (AHPCRC). A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. xiii PREFACE Mesh generation is one of the most time consuming aspects of com putational solutions of problems involving partial differential equations. It is, furthermore, no longer acceptable to compute solutions without proper verification that specified accuracy criteria are being satisfied. Mesh gen eration must be related to the solution through computable estimates of discretization errors. Thus, an iterative process of alternate mesh and so lution generation evolves in an adaptive manner with the end result that the solution is computed to prescribed specifications in an optimal, or at least efficient, manner. While mesh generation and adaptive strategies are becoming available, major computational challenges remain. One, in particular, involves moving boundaries and interfaces, such as free-surface flows and fluid-structure interactions.

### Fractional Differential Equations BERTRAMS

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

This book is a landmark title in the continuous move from integer to non-integer in mathematics: from integer numbers to real numbers, from factorials to the gamma function, from integer-order models to models of an arbitrary order. For historical reasons, the word 'fractional' is used instead of the word 'arbitrary'. This book is written for readers who are new to the fields of fractional derivatives and fractional-order mathematical models, and feel that they need them for developing more adequate mathematical models. In this book, not only applied scientists, but also pure mathematicians will find fresh motivation for developing new methods and approaches in their fields of research. A reader will find in this book everything necessary for the initial study and immediate application of fractional derivatives fractional differential equations, including several necessary special functions, basic theory of fractional differentiation, uniqueness and existence theorems, analytical numerical methods of solution of fractional differential equations, and many inspiring examples of applications. The key features include: a unique survey of many applications of fractional calculus; presents basic theory; includes a unified presentation of selected classical results, which are important for applications; provides many examples; contains a separate chapter of fractional order control systems, which opens new perspectives in control theory; the first systematic consideration of Caputo's fractional derivative in comparison with other selected approaches; and, includes tables of fractional derivatives, which can be used for evaluation of all considered types of fractional derivatives.

### Focal Boundary Value Problems for Differential and Difference Equations Springer Netherlands

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The last fifty years have witnessed several monographs and hundreds of research articles on the theory, constructive methods and wide spectrum of applications of boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. In this vast field of research, the conjugate (Hermite) and the right focal point (Abei) types of problems have received the maximum attention. This is largely due to the fact that these types of problems are basic, in the sense that the methods employed in their study are easily extendable to other types of prob lems. Moreover, the conjugate and the right focal point types of boundary value problems occur frequently in real world problems. In the monograph Boundary Value Problems for Higher Order Differential Equations published in 1986, we addressed the theory of conjugate boundary value problems. At that time the results on right focal point problems were scarce; however, in the last ten years extensive research has been done. In Chapter 1 of the mono graph we offer up-to-date information of this newly developed theory of right focal point boundary value problems. Until twenty years ago Difference Equations were considered as the dis cretizations of the differential equations. Further, it was tacitly taken for granted that the theories of difference and differential equations are parallel. However, striking diversities and wide applications reported in the last two decades have made difference equations one of the major areas of research.

### Advanced Topics in Computational Partial Differential Equations Springer, Berlin

**Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna**

The book is suitable for readers with a background in basic finite element and finite difference methods for partial differential equations who wants gentle introductions to advanced topics like parallel computing, multigrid methods, and special methods for systems of PDEs. The goal of all chapters is to compute solutions to problems, hence algorithmic and software issues play a central role. All software examples use the Diffpack programming environment, so to take advantage of these examples some experience with Diffpack is required. There are also some chapters covering complete applications, i.e., the way from a model, expressed as systems of PDEs, through discretization methods, algorithms, software design, verification, and computational examples.
