International Legal Positivism in a Post-Modern World - 2854249700

International Legal Positivism in a Post-Modern World Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

International Legal Positivism in a Post-Modern World provides fresh perspectives on one of the most important and most controversial families of theoretical approaches to the study and practice of international law. The contributors include leading experts on international legal theory who analyse and criticise positivism as a conceptual framework for international law, explore its relationships with other approaches and apply it to current problems of international law. Is legal positivism relevant to the theory and practice of international law today? Have other answers to the problems of international law and the critique of positivism undermined the positivist project and its narratives? Do modern forms of positivism, inspired largely by the theoretically sophisticated jurisprudential concepts associated with Hans Kelsen and H. L. A. Hart, remain of any relevance for the international lawyer in this 'post-modern' age? The authors provide a wide variety of views and a stimulating debate about this family of approaches.

Nuclear Proliferation and Terrorism in the Post-9/11 World Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book meets the need for textbook covering nuclear proliferation and related issues post 9/11 from a scientific standpoint. It draws in part on the author's previous title Physics of Societal Issues , but offers a far more detailed view of nuclear weapons, nuclear proliferation and international nuclear policy.§The book begins with an introduction to the fundamental science and technology of nuclear weapons, adopting a concept-led approach which serves a broad readership. A technical background is not assumed and equations are kept to a minimum. In the following chapters the author addresses topics including offensive and defensive missile systems, command and control, verification, weapon effects, and nuclear testing. A chronology of nuclear arms development is presented including detailed discussion of the Cold War, proliferation, and arms control treaties. In the final chapters the author addresses some key issues facing the world post 9/11, including the threat of nuclear terrorism.§The book is tailored to courses on nuclear proliferation and international policy, and has been written to appeal to students regardless of their technical background. The general reader will also find it a fascinating introduction to the science and strategy behind international nuclear policy in the modern era.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Fifty Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World ATLANTIC BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Stephen Trombley's Fifty Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World traces the development of modern thought through a sequence of accessible profiles of the most influential thinkers in every domain of intellectual endeavour since 1789. No major representative of post-Enlightenment thought escapes Trombley's attention: the German idealists Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel; the utilitarians Bentham and Mill; the transcendentalists Emerson and Thoreau; Kierkegaard and the existentialists; founders of new fields of inquiry such as Weber, Durkheim and C.S. Peirce; the analytic philosophers Russell, Moore, Whitehead and Wittgenstein; political leaders from Mohandas K. Gandhi to Adolf Hitler; and - last but not least - the four shapers-in-chief of our modern world: the philosopher, historian and political theorist Karl Marx; the naturalist Charles Darwin, proposer of the theory of evolution; Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis; and the theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, begetter of the special and general theories of relativity and founder of post-Newtonian physics. Fifty Thinkers Who Shaped the Modern World offers a crisp analysis of their key ideas, and in some cases a re-evaluation of their importance as we proceed into the 21st century.

State Failure in the Modern World Stanford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

State failure is seen as one of the significant threats to regional and international stability in the current international system. "State Failure in the Modern World" presents a comprehensive, systematic, and empirically rigorous analysis of the full range of the state failure process in the post-World War II state systemincluding what state failure means, its causes, what accounts for its duration, its consequences, and its implications. Among the questions the book addresses are: when and why state failure occurs, why it recurs in any single state, and when and why its consequences spread to other states. The book sets out the array of problems in previous work on state failure with respect to conceptualization and definition, as well as how the causes and consequences of state failure have been addressed, and presents analyses to deal with these problems. Any analysis of state failure can be seen as an exercise in policy evaluation; this book undertakes the theoretical, conceptual, and analytic work that must be done before we can evaluateor have much confidence inboth current and proposed policy prescriptions to prevent or manage state collapse. The Brits Who Built the Modern World Riba

Książki

The British, we are often told, are a cautious bunch, wary of the new and conservative in their tastes. Yet, British Architecture in the 21st Century has an almost unrivalled reputation around the world for daring, innovation, creativity and flair. From Beijing to New York and Doha to Mumbai, British architects and British expertise are playing a major role in redefining the world?s cities and creating great buildings with the names of Rogers, Foster, Grimshaw, Farrell, Hopkins and many others featuring prominently on the global stage. So, where has this come from? How did British Architecture grab the world?s attention?Using the RIBA?s unique collections and material drawn from key architectural practices, this book explores the story of British architecture abroad between the years 1750 to the present day. Inspired by the BBC documentary series The Brits Who Built the Modern World, it looks at early buildings and far off places, explores what and where the British built, and sets in context the dramatic transformation in the post war years of an industry that had once been resistant to modernism.Examining the work of a definitive generation of architects - Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Nicholas Grimshaw, Terry Farrell, Michael Hopkins - and other key players, this book charts the projects and influences that put British architecture back on the world map.

Politics and the Peasantry in Post-War Turkey I B TAURIS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

When the Ottoman Empire collapsed following the First World War, the feudal system which had survived untouched in much of Anatolia began to change. Kemal Ataturk's task of building a nation 'from the people up' meant that the peasantry, by far Turkey's largest ethnographic group, became an important symbol of social cohesion. Here, Sinan Yildirmaz analyses the history of modern Turkey through the material culture of this peasantry - their speeches, social club documents, art and diaries - and reveals a rich social and political life which flowered after the Second World War. Politics and the Peasantry in Post-War Turkey is the first history to show how the changing peasantry laid the foundations for the modern Turkish state, and will be essential reading for students and scholars of the Ottoman Empire and of the History of Modern Turkey.

Gay Men and the Left in Post-war Britain - 2854320909

Gay Men and the Left in Post-war Britain MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book, newly available in paperback, demonstrates how the personal became political in post-war Britain, and argues that attention to gay activism can help us to fundamentally rethink the nature of post-war politics. While the Left were fighting among themselves and the reformists were struggling with the limits of law reform, gay men started organising for themselves, first individually within existing organisations and later rejecting formal political structures altogether. Gay activists intersected with Trotskyism, Stalinism, the New Left, feminism and youth movements. As the slogan of the Gay Liberation Front proclaimed, 'Come out, come together and change the world'. Culture, performance and identity took over from economics and class struggle, as gay men worked to change the world through the politics of sexuality. Throughout the post-war years, the new cult of the teenager in the 1950s, CND and the counter-culture of the 1960s, gay liberation, feminism, the Punk movement and the miners' strike of 1984 all helped to build a politics of identity. When AIDS and Thatcherism impacted on gay men's lives in the 1980s, gay politics came into its own. There is an assumption among many of today's politicians that young people are apathetic and disengaged. This book argues that these politicians are looking in the wrong place. People now feel that they can impact the world through the way in which they live, shop, have sex and organise their private lives. Robinson shows that gay men and their politics have been central to this change in the post-war world. This book will be valuable for students and academics of Politics, Modern British History, Media and Cultural Studies and Gender Studies as well as those interested in gay or left-wing history and politics.

The Modern Lovers' the Modern Lovers - 2854505882

The Modern Lovers' the Modern Lovers Bloomsbury Academic

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Modern Lovers was never meant to be an album. It was a collection of demos, recorded in fits and starts as Jonathan Richman and his band negotiated modernity and the music industry. A collection of songs about a city and a society in flux, Richman observes a city all but abandoned by adults, ravaged by white flight and urban renewal, veering towards anarchy as old world social moors collide with new attitudes. It is a city that stands in stark contrast to the the ranch style bedroom community where he was raised. All of these conflicts are churned through Richman's intellectual acuity and emotional unrest to create one of the 20th century's most enduring documents of post-adolescent malaise.

Post-subcultures Reader BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Once it was just Mods and Rockers or Hippies and Skinheads. Now we have Riot Grrls and Rappers; Modern Primitives and Metalheads; Goths, Clubcultures and Fetishists; Urban Tribes, New Age Travellers and Internet fan groups. In a global society with a rapid proliferation of images, fashions and lifestyles, it is -unsurprisingly - becoming increasingly difficult to pinpoint what 'subculture actually means. Enthusiastically adopted by the media and academia, subculture may be a convenient way to describe more unconventional aspects of youth culture, but it does little to help us comprehend the diverse range of youth groups in todays so-called postmodern world. How can we begin to rethink, reformulate and replace outdated notions of subcultures to make them applicable to the experiences of youth in the twenty-first century? And to what extent does this involve the challenging of past orthodoxies about spectacular subcultural styles? From Seattle anarchist punks to UK Asian underground music, Canadian female X-Files fans to Australian dance cultures, this groundbreaking book draws on a wide variety of international case studies to investigate the new relationships among youth subcultural music, politics and taste. Is it possible to work within the existing limitations of subculture, or has the concept exhausted its usefulness? Can attempts at re-conceptualization, such as neo-tribes, sub-streams and micro-networks, adequately capture the experience of fragmentation, flux and fluidity that is central to contemporary youth culture? This timely book is the first to challenge and reconsider the use of subculture. In doing so, it questions the possibility and relevance of what might be termed post-subcultural studies and helps to chart the emergence of a new paradigm for the study of youth subculture.

This study offers a critique of international relations from the perspective of eminent pre-modern Chinese thinker Gongsun Long. Shedding new light on the interconnected epistemological, ontological, and political dimensions of his thought, Shih and Yu consider a pressing question of our time: how to conceptualize political order in the globalized contemporary world. Gongsun Long's approach in many ways prefigures postmodern thinking, and his writings inspire critical reflections on globalization.
