ABC about Collecting (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The ABC About Collecting A word in the ear of the people who "would like to collect if they knew anything at all about it," as the say. Listen. Seven dealers out of every ten know next to nothing about it now, and knew nothing at all about it when they began! This is an admitted fact, as a rule; the dealers themselves would confess it to you freely. Collecting is an art, not a business. And the average dealer knows rather less about any one "line" than does the average amateur. Dealers learn what they know from their customers; they have said so again and again. "I should very much like to collect old prints - coins, and medals - Georgian furniture," say Mr. Brown, Mr. Jones, Mr. Robinson. "I should like to fill the drawing-room cabinet with good old china," say unanimously their respective wives. "But we don't know how," they go on, with one voice - "it would cost a fortune - the dealers would rook us!" My dear Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Jones, and Robinson, I assure you, nothing of the sort. "It must be so difficult to become a judge!" you say. Oh, no! Nothing is easier and pleasanter than to learn when one hankers to learn. Besides, one learns in bits: one learns to collect by collecting. "But the real things cost so much!" Do they? People have to buy furniture and mantelpiece ornaments of one kind or another, and it is still a fact that you can buy fine old china for less than the price of china that is fine and new. A roomful of good old furniture, picked up a piece at a time, will cost you less than a roomful of furniture that is both new and as good. And the old things are much the more comfortable to live with. "But surely all the real bargains have been picked up long ago," says the doubter. Dear would-be amateur, bargains go begging in by-streets nearly every day! "But even bargains cost you a lot, to begin with," says the doubter. Do they? Listen again. Protecting Liberty in an Age of Terror MIT Press Massachusets Institute of Tech nology

Inne 1

Since September 11, 2001, much has been said about the difficult balancing act between freedom and security, but few have made specific proposals for how to strike that balance. As the scandals over the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib and the "torture memos" written by legal officials in the Bush administration show, without clear rules in place, things can very easily go very wrong. With this challenge in mind, Philip Heymann and Juliette Kayyem, directors of Harvard's Long-Term Legal Strategy Project for Preserving Security and Democratic Freedoms in the War on Terrorism, take a detailed look at how to handle these competing concerns. Taking into account both the national security viewpoint and the democratic freedoms viewpoint, Heymann and Kayyem consulted experts from across the political spectrum -- including Rand Beers, Robert McNamara, and Michael Chertoff (since named Secretary of Homeland Security) -- about the thorniest and most profound legal challenges of this new era. Heymann and Kayyem offer specific recommendations for dealing with such questions as whether assassination is ever acceptable, when coercion can be used in interrogation, and when detention is allowable. They emphasize that drawing clear rules to guide government conduct protects the innocent from unreasonable government intrusion and prevents government agents from being made scapegoats later if things go wrong. Their recommendations will be of great interest to legal scholars, legislators, policy professionals, and concerned citizens.

Bridges - 2834141905

Bridges Oxford University Press

Bridges touch all our lives - every day we are likely to cross a bridge, or go under one. How many of us stop to consider how the bridge stands up and what sort of people designed and built something so strong? Bridge building is a magnificent example of the practical and every day use of science. However, the story of bridges goes beyond science and technology, and involves issues relating to artistic and cultural development. After all, bridges are built by people, for people. Bridges can be icons for whole cities; just consider New York's Brooklyn Bridge, London's Tower Bridge, and Sydney's Harbour Bridge. Such bridges can be considered functional public art, as they have the power to delight or be an eyesore. David Blockley explains how to read a bridge, in all its different forms, design, and construction, and the way the forces flow through arches and beams. He combines the engineering of how bridges stand up with the cultural, aesthetic, and historical importance they hold. Drawing on examples of particular bridges from around the world, he also looks in detail at the risk engineers take when building bridges, and examines why things sometimes go wrong.

Excerpt from The Circle: A Comedy in Three Acts The Scene is a stately drawing-room at Aston-Adey, with fine pictures on the walls and Georgian furniture. Aston-Adey has been described, with many illustrations, in Country Life. It is not a house, but a place. Its owner takes a great pride in it, and there is nothing in the room which is not of the period. Through the French windows at the back can be seen the beautiful gardens which are one of the features. It is a fine summer morning. Arnold comes in. He is a man of about thirty-five, tall and good-looking, fair, with a clean-cut, sensitive ace. He has a look that is intellectual, but somewhat bloodless. He is very well dressed. Arnold. [Calling.] Elizabeth! [He goes to the window and calls again.] Elizabeth! [He rings the bell. While he is waiting he gives a look round the room. He slightly alters the position of one of the chairs. He takes an ornament from the chimney-piece and blows the dust from it.] [A Footman comes in. Oh, George! see if you can find Mrs. Cheney, and ask her if she'd be good enough to come here. Footman. Very good, sir. [The Footman turns to go. Arnold. Who is supposed to look after this room? Footman. I don't know, sir. Arnold. I wish when they dust they'd take care to replace the things exactly as they were before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not too long ago (in a galaxy not too far away), the term presentation software meant poster board and marker pens. Times sure have changed. Now, computer presentations are the norm; in fact, you may get some downright dirty looks from your boss if you come into a conference room carrying flip charts or a stack of handwritten transparencies. And if you haven't been instructed to create a PowerPoint presentation, it's only a matter of time before you will be! But how do you get started with PowerPoint? Ordinary Objects - 2836516662

120,66 zł

Ordinary Objects Oxford University Press Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Arguments that ordinary inanimate objects such as tables and chairs, sticks and stones, simply do not exist have become increasingly common and increasingly prominent. Some are based on demands for parsimony or for a non-arbitrary answer to the special composition question; others arise from prohibitions against causal redundancy, ontological vagueness, or co-location; and others still come from worries that a common sense ontology would be a rival to a scientific one. Until now, little has been done to address these arguments in a unified and systematic way. Ordinary Objects is designed to fill this gap, demonstrating that the mistakes behind all of these superficially diverse eliminativist arguments may be traced to a common source. It aims to develop an ontology of ordinary objects subject to no such problems, providing perhaps the first sustained defense of a common sense ontology in two generations. The work done along the way addresses a number of major issues in philosophy of language and metaphysics, contributing to debates about analyticity, identity conditions, co-location and the grounding problem, vagueness, overdetermination, parsimony, and ontological commitment. In the end, the most important result of addressing these eliminativist arguments is not merely avoiding their conclusions; examining their failings also gives us reason to suspect that many apparent disputes in ontology are pseudo-debates. For it brings into question widely-held assumptions about which uses of metaphysical principles are appropriate, which metaphysical demands are answerable, and how we should go about addressing such fundamental questions as "What exists?". As a result, the work of Ordinary Objects promises to provide not only the route to a reflective understanding of our unreflective common-sense view, but also a better understanding of the proper methods and limits of metaphysics. "Ordinary Objects is well worth reading because it sheds new light on how to preserve the credibility of familiar things."--Marianne Djuth, The Review of Metaphysics "In Ordinary Objects , Amie Thomasson mounts a spirited and vigorous defense of the reality of ordinary objects."--Terry Horgan, Times Literary Supplement "Ordinary Objects is a fine book...[ Thomasson] writes insightfully and persuasively, and she has a realistic view of what metaphysical arguments can and cannot demonstrate...she approaches metaphysical theorizing more systematically than many other recent writers, drawing attention to the ways in which questionable assumptions in one area of philosophy are undergirding seemingly powerful arguments in another. Everyone working in metaphysics should make time for this volume."--R. W. Fischer, Metaphilosophy "In Ordinary Objects , Thomasson pursues an integrated conception of ontology and metaontology. In ontology, she defends the existence of shoes, ships, and other ordinary objects. In metaontology, she defends a deflationary view of ontological inquiry, designed to suck the air out of arguments against ordinary objects. The result is an elegant and insightful defense of a common sense worldview."--Jonathan Schaffer, Philosophical Books "Amie Thomasson has written a lovely book which is certain to irritate many professional metaphysicians. But it is not just irritating: it is challenging...This book would be a good supplementary text for upper-level metaphysics classes or seminars in which the sorts of arguments to which Thomasson replies are also read. "--Alan Sidelle, The Philosophical Quarterly

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) saw religion as part of the natural human propensity to worship. His ability to recognize the naturalness of this phenomenon and simultaneously to go beyond it, to explore spiritual revelation, makes his work fresh and highly readable today. While drawing on a strong distinction between theology and philosophy, Aquinas interleaved them intricately in his writings, which range from an examination of the structures of thought to the concept of God as the end of all things. This accessible new translation chooses substantial passages not only from the indispensable Summa Theologicae, but from many other works, fully illustrating the breadth and progression of Aquinas's philosophy. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Sir Alex Ferguson is undoubtedly the greatest British football manager in living memory. With a reign at Manchester United approaching 25 years, Sir Alex has brought countless trophies and records to Old Trafford and has transformed United into the most popular football club in the world. Born in Govan, Glasgow, in 1941, Ferguson started his playing career at Queen's Park and Dunfermline, later moving to Rangers for a record GBP65,000. He retired in 1974 to begin his managerial career. Ferguson's biggest club before Manchester United was Aberdeen, where he led a struggling side to an incredible Scottish league championship and oversaw a 2-1 win over Real Madrid to seal the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup. But it is Manchester United that has brought Sir Alex world domination. Joining the club in November 1986 following the sacking of Ron Atkinson, Ferguson immediately set about imporving the players' discipline and strengthening the squad. Things didn't go exactly to plan in Sir Alex's first few years at United, with the team still underperforming, but his signing of Eric Cantona for a bargain GBP1.2million in 1992 helped to secure their first League trophy in 26 years. An incredible run of success followed, with the emergence of Welsh Wizard Ryan Giggs and 'Fergie's Fledglings', including Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Nicky Butt, contributing to United's dominance of English football during the 1990s. And Fergie's finest moment was still to come in 1999, when Manchester United staged a dramatic last-gasp comeback to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 and clinch an unprecedented Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies. He was knighted the same year for his services to football. Under Sir Alex, United have won 11 Premier League titles - drawing level with arch-rivals Liverpool on 18 League titles in total - and have reached the Champions League final three times, winning the trophy on two occassions. Fergie has also brought some of United's biggest and best-loved stars to Old Trafford and has truly made Manchester United one of the most powerful footballing forces in the world today.

Better Never to Have Been - 2826631945

Better Never to Have Been Oxford University Press

Most people believe that they were either benefited or at least not harmed by being brought into existence. Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence---rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should---they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Although the good things in one's life make one's life go better than it otherwise would have gone, one could not have been deprived by their absence if one had not existed. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the 'anti-natal' view---that it is always wrong to have children---and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about foetal moral status yield a 'pro-death' view about abortion (at the earlier stages of gestation). Anti-natalism also implies that it would be better if humanity became extinct. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population.
