Internet and Mobile Telecommunications System of Innovation Edward Elgar

Inne 1

'. . . this book is a great reference tool for those involved in telecommunications. The macroeconomic aspects of how different entities affected the development of worldwide standards are addressed as well and make for interesting case studies.'- Maike van Wijk, Business Information AlertThis book examines the 'new' areas of telecommunications technology, focusing particularly on fixed data communications (including the internet) and mobile telecommunications (including the mobile internet). A sectoral systems of innovation approach is used as a conceptual framework for the analysis of the telecommunications sector, in terms of equipment, access and content. The authors consider the emergence and expansion of new technologies and explore how the sectoral system of innovation is evolving and how previously independent systems are now converging. In particular, they address the question of equipment production and the provision of intangible service products such as internet access and content. By addressing the production of both goods and services, they highlight the critical interdependence of service innovations and manufacturing innovations. Some of the specific topics discussed within the book include:* the challenges for Europe of fixed data communications* second and third generation mobile telecommunications systems * data communication via satellite and television subsystems * the dynamics and trends of the internet services industry* policy implications for the future of the telecommunications sectoral system of innovation. The book is a comprehensive theoretical, empirical and policy oriented account of the emergence and evolution of the sectoral system of innovation of the internet and mobile telecommunications. It will be an invaluable source of reference for academic researchers and policymakers in the fields of macroeconomics, industrial economics and innovation, as well as consultants and firms operating in the communications industry.

Using an institutional approach, it examines the main theoretical issues and practices and their effect on different dimensions of society and the economy. Business creation is considered a key element of economic growth, innovation and employment. In recent years, entrepreneurial scholars have studied the factors that affect entrepreneurship and drive economic growth. Employer Branding - 2826790524

Employer Branding GRIN Verlag

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 2,3, University of Paderborn (Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Wirtschaftsenglisch), language: English, abstract: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract:§The information economy, the current demographical trends and other factors will produce a shortage of skilled labour. During the last decade, many labour markets had encountered a shortage of skilled labour. In fact, whole industries have had serious problems to fill vacancies. Many have forecast horror scenarios for the labour market, whereas others have created strategic concepts to cope with it. §The War for Talent and the Employer of Choice concept are leftovers of this period. Employee attraction and retention will continue to be an important issue for many companies in the beginning of the 21st century. The new up-coming competition for talent draws the attention on a new concept, in order to deal with the future challenge - employer branding. Employer branding has moved center stage in the last two years. The strategic relevance of employer branding is still underestimated or unknown. §Employer branding is neither a wonder cure nor a cure-all approach. This thesis and chapters provide an insight in the employer branding concept and its relevance. What does employer branding means, where does it stem from? It also contains a practical guide for developing and implementing an employer branding process, with a short case study of global chemical company.§Do you remember the scenario published in McKinsey s Quarterly in 1998? The War for Talent - this expression has become synonymous for the labour shortage of High Potentials. The economy was burning white-hot in the late 1990s and companies were scrambling to hire and retain the people they needed. With a boom, talent becomes scarcer because everybody is looking for talented people to fill vacancies. In the late 1990s the employer of choice concept became popular, when the war for talent was about to begin. §The term employer of choice is based on the unwritten promises and expectations that develop the basis of the employment relationship. The collapse of the dot.com industry, followed by a time of recession and downturns causing layoffs and job cuts, has created a surplus of labour. The predicted War for Talent for High Potentials has been postponed. Really?§The current economic landscape has changed dramatically, product lifecycles have grown shorter, products and services are substitutional, innovation is accelerating and customer loyalty is just a pie-in-the-sky. The economy is driven by ongoing changes, globalization, growing complexity and the changing nature of work. Companies have to sustain on different markets, which are influenced by dynamics, increasing competitive pressure. §For this reason, having a long-lasting competitive advantage becomes more and more vital to companies, in terms of innovation. Knowledge is becoming the strategic source of innovation, not the reliance on technology. Hodes CEO Alan Schwartz points it out: People - talented people - solve problems and make sense of things. Not technology. That is what drives the importance of having the right talent inside a company. Nevertheless, there are emerging social and demographic trends that can make the recruiting efforts of organizations even harder and might start a new war: for Right Potentials.§Every employer in Western economies are facing the same problems and questions:§- How can we attract and retain employees?§- What differentiates our company from our competitors?§- What kind of talent do we need?§- How do our target groups perceive us?§- What kind of benefits do we offer?§- What makes us a First Choice employer ?§- What drives employee engagement and employee satisfaction?§Al...

First Thing We Do, Let's Deregulate All the Lawyers - 2854323468

First Thing We Do, Let's Deregulate All the Lawyers Brookings Institution

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Not many Americans think of the legal profession as a monopoly, but it is. Abraham Lincoln, who practiced law for nearly twenty-five years, would likely not have been allowed to practice today. Without a law degree from an American Bar Association-sanctioned institution, a would-be lawyer is allowed to practice law in only a few states. ABA regulations also prevent even licensed lawyers who work for firms that are not owned and managed by lawyers from providing legal services. At the same time, a slate of government policies has increased the demand for lawyers' services. Basic economics suggests that those entry barriers and restrictions combined with government-induced demand for lawyers will continue to drive the price of legal services even higher. Clifford Winston, Robert Crandall, and Vikram Maheshri argue that these increased costs cannot be economically justified. They create significant social costs, hamper innovation, misallocate the nation's labor resources, and create socially perverse incentives. In the end, attorneys support inefficient policies that preserve and enhance their own wealth, to the detriment of the general population. To fix this situation, the authors propose a novel solution: deregulation of the legal profession. Lowering the barriers to entry will force lawyers to compete more intensely with each other and to face competition from nonlawyers and firms that are not owned and managed by lawyers. The book provides a much-needed analysis of why legal costs are so high and how they can be reduced without sacrificing the quality of legal services.

The effects of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on globalization, innovation, growth and productivity are immense. ICTs contribute to the globalization of production and capital markets by reducing the cost of information and communication. These technologies have certainly made it easier for multinationals and other companies to spread production facilities all over the world, to co-ordinate international marketing campaigns, and to ease collaboration in projects taking place on different continents. While the anti-globalization movement may claim otherwise, individuals and consumers also have much to gain from the internationalization of trade and commerce. Using the Internet, consumers can today find products on sale in other countries or not available in their own countries, and compare their standard of living to those of others. It is also, as a result of the Internet, much easier for consumers to become better informed. As a result of this increased access to information, markets work more efficiently. Furthermore, globalization has speeded up the diffusion of innovation, bringing new knowledge, products and services to developing countries in months rather than years or decades. This book deals with the implications of a global economy and the emergence of a society permeated by information and communication technologies. The book includes a special focus on telecommunications markets and policy and on user perspectives. The editors have been careful to select a wide range of papers by expert scholars and policy analysts in order to capture the book issues from a number of perspectives. The book represents a holistic approach, bringing to bear a number of critical perspectives: economics, engineering, business, organization theory, psychology, policy analysis, and security concerns. The volume succeeds in providing a multi-faceted and rich view of the book topic.
